Negroni #2, El Moro, $9
Dawn Drophead, 11th Street, $9
Riverside Kolsch, Animas Brewing Co., $4.50
Margarita, Nayarit, $7.50
Orange is the color of a dog day sunset, the Broncos, and Prince Harry’s head. It’s also the color of Dawn Drophead, an on-tap cocktail that is a White Manhattan of sorts, made with Fireside bourbon, Alpine liqueur, pineapple rum, Carpano Bianco vermouth, and orange bitters, served in a coupe glass.
OK, beer is not a cocktail, but it’s outside the door chanting, “We’re here! We’re beer! Get used to it!” It fought for the right to be included in this list, and we profoundly admire that. We also admire the color of beer – yellow. The crushable Riverside Kolsch from Animas Brewing Co. is as golden as summertime. And it’s delicious!
Red is a powerful color. Lust, rage, danger, and other passionate feelings come to mind when we see it, so don’t get too outta hand when drinking El Moro’s ruby red take on a classic amber negroni. The drink is made with Bombay Original London Dry Gin, Martini and Rossi Rosso vermouth, Campari, and Aperol (which makes it red), over ice with an orange slice.
We love green in our wallets AND in a fat joint. We also love it in margaritas – the reigning champ of green drinks until the end of time. While watermelon and jalapeño additions are delish, it’s hard to beat a classic marg. Nayarit makes them right with Blue Sauza tequila, fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, with Triple Sec and another orange liqueur.

Blue Fucker, Roadhouse, $3
The Erring Sister, Durango Craft Spirits, $10
Fantasia, Bookcase and Barber, $13
I’m blue da ba dee da ba di. Blue flavor has a questionable reputation. (Who else is still pissed at Jolly Rancher for replacing lemon with sugary blue raspberry?) The Blue Fucker is also questionable. We have no idea what it’s made of. The mystery ingredients are anchored by schnapps, Red Bull, and what we’re guessing is blue glow stick.
This stunning color is extremely rare in nature. The richest indigo dye comes from the leaves of Indigofera tinctoria. In the past, it was so desirable this blue gold was used as currency. Now most indigo dye is synthetic, and color specialists don’t include it in their rainbows because they think it’s between blue and violet. We think that’s trash. Indigo is beautiful and it is its own color. Enjoy this rarity, made with house-made basil simple syrup, lemon, blueberry-infused Sold Doves vodka, a splash of soda, and lemon garnish.
The original Bookcase and Barber cocktail Fantasia is named after magical land in “The NeverEnding Story.” We are still dealing with PTSD after Atrax died in the Swamp of Sadness, and this drink is a trigger, but it also helps us forget. Made with Empress gin, Combier Creme de Pamplemousse Rose liqueur, Bols Elderflower, Trakal (a Patagonian spirit), Timberline tonic, house lavender bitters, and Luster Dust edible glitter, over a large rock. The cocktail is elegant, sparkly, refreshing, and depressing. FIGHT AGAINST THE SADNESS!

Grammy winner Humphrey steps into a new band, new role
T
he recent departure of bass player Charley Humphrey III from Steep Canyon Rangers, the Grammy-winning bluegrass band, may have been viewed by fans and contemporaries as a strange career choice. The band is a respected favorite around the tight-knit national bluegrass community. They started backing comedian and longtime banjo player Steve Martin back in 2009, and from there, their popularity soared. Humphrey, however, has always been about the music, whether it was in an established group or a side project. For Humphrey, it doesn’t matter if the show is in a Durango backyard or Carnegie Hall. The songwriting, touring, and original tunes – not the venue – have always been the mission. During Humphrey’s time with Steep Canyon, he always had another project, Songs From the Road Band, on the back burner. The North Carolina group is anchored by Humphrey, and features a rotating cast of musicians who got together and played songs when they weren’t on the road with their respective bands. It was the epitome of a side project for everyone involved, Humphrey included, so it was surprising to see him leave Steep Canyon to fire up Songs From the Road on a fulltime basis. The move is a testament to Humphrey’s dedication to original music. Songs From the Road is now Humphrey’s main gig, and things are going strong. The band has a solid lineup, a fourth record – “Road to Nowhere” – which is due out in July, and a full roster of shows this summer, including stops tonight (June 21) in Cortez and tomorrow (June 22) at The Balcony Backstage in Durango. Some of the rotating pickers that played on the last three records have moved on, and the band is now a core group of five musicians, which was necessary to solidify future plans. The lineup includes Humphrey on bass, Sam Wharton on guitar, Mark Schimick on mandolin, James Schlender on fiddle, and Ryan Cavanaugh on banjo. “It’s fun to bring in other pickers and instruments and kind of create something, capture a moment in time and be able to share that with everyone,” said Humphrey. “But when we decided to say, ‘Hey, we’ve got to go on the road; we got to get serious here,’ and then we looked for the five guys that fit together, still represent our catalog of music, look forward

They’re working hard and they’re super talented.” Their bluegrass songbook is vast, and its contributors are many. Songs From the Road Band draws from numerous influences, like the innovators who can make you weep with the swipe of a pen or pick your jaw up from the floor after a blistering solo. This isn’t jam-grass or watered-down, wispy ballads, the kind that give acoustic music a bad name. This is roots Americana with a bluegrass edge; it’s driving, lyrically poignant, and heartbreaking, picked by musicians who get after it like lives are at
stake. Dedicated to the craft of instrumentation and songwriting, the band explores a gutsy and raw side of acoustic music, while maintaining a respect for the traditions from the early days of bluegrass. Tales of jilted lovers, heartbreak, and war stories are layered among songs about trains, hillbillies, and hobos. Times may change, but heartbreak and human emotion don’t, and this band nails the human condition over and over, accompanied by striking instrumentation. “I love the songwriting, I love the solos, and I love the harmony singing. It all works together,” said Humphreys. “This group of guys we’ve got now, they go up there and they are out for blood. They want to nail these songs more than anything in the world. I think what truly makes them happier, more than anything else in their lives, is being rehearsed, getting up on that stage and absolutely nailing these songs so people can enjoy it. To me, that gets me fired up and I get tapped into that energy.” Bryant Liggett is a freelance writer and KDUR station manager. liggett_b@fortlewis.edu.

June 14 Kamasi Washington,“Heaven and Earth” Kamasi Washington has helped bring jazz into the hearts, minds, and ears of a new generation with his work on seminal hip-hop records. His last few studio efforts attracted a lot of attention in the jazz space. His last EP was an interesting – if by its own nature repetitive – foray into smooth jazz, and his debut was one of the few records to actually deserve its title of “The Epic.” But, “Heaven and Earth” is poised to bring that sound to an even wider audience, and maybe show the young bucks that jazz isn’t old music. In 2018, it can be as fresh as it ever was. His works are dynamic and warm, and the introduction to “Space Traveller’s Lullaby” sounds like the overture to a classic movie, while “Fists of Fury” feels like an expanded take on the theme to the classic Bruce Lee flick of the same name. It has a swing to it that is both subtle and immediately gets you moving. There are surprise bursts of free jazz, but for the most part, the record is remarkably restrained, giving even more power to the compositions that let not just Kamasi shine, but EVERY member of the band as well. Trombonist Ryan Porter makes
before they were truly given their due. Back in 2014, the band reunited to play the Merge 25 weekend of anniversary shows, right alongside bands that perhaps wouldn’t exist without their influence. Since reforming, the band – songwriter and lead singer/ guitarist Christopher Lopez, guitarist Justin Hughes, bassist William R. Joiner, and drummer Ballard Lesemann – has returned to touring and playing live. Thankfully, the return to the road also meant the band began writing again, and the culmination of doing so is the infectious “Sixth House.” This is a
record of wonderfully unique indie rock, with precise musicianship and an off-kilter delivery. When I say infectious, I meant it. The album has only gotten better with repeated spins, like any great album should. Standout tracks include the foot-stomping romper of an opener, “Billy Really,” the anthemic fist pumper “Closest To Heaven,” and the jangly heavy hip-shaker, “Lost In Sound.” Lopez and company are playing like a band half their age, and sound as if they are having a lot of fun doing so. Hopefully this translates into some of the due they should have

reaching for, and wraps up the trilogy of records in a perfect way. It blends those old and new sounds and shows a glimpse of what could lie on the other side of the horizon. I am looking
forward to what may come next.
Nine Inch Nails,“Bad Witch” Trent Reznor and company have returned with the final installment of their trilogy with the album “Bad Witch.” It completes the trio of records that started with 2016’s “Not The Actual Events,” and 2017’s “Add Violence.” This album leans more on the side of rumbling dissonance with the first record of the series. Some of the tracks, including lead single “God Break Down the Door,” channel his work with the late David Bowie, allowing Reznor to croon over a quiet beat. This song shows up on the second half of the record, and it offers a slight respite from the bombardment of dissonant breaks that open up the album. “Ahead of Ourselves” is the track on the album that tunes in most to the nostalgic ’90s sound of the band, and it’s the closest Reznor has come to that sound in a long time. “Ahead of Ourselves” churns and writhes at a faster BPM than most of his tracks did even back then, with broken drum machines spazzing out breaks faster than the mind can process. This is quintessential Nine Inch Nails. There is something surprising, but at the same time it all feels very familiar. Ultimately, “Bad Witch” encapsulates the modern sound that Reznor seems to be

I still remember the first time I heard Atlanta, Georgia band The Rock*A*Teens, not to be confused with the Richmond, Virginia, rockabilly sextet of the late ’50s, The Rock-ATeens. I’m referring to the asterisked indie rockers, not the hyphenated early rock and rollers. I was living in Lawrence, Kansas, and heard a cut off their second Merge release, “Golden Time,” on KJHK, the local college radio station. Colorado’s first LGBT historic landmark GET OUTTA TOWN Quirky & cool spots in the Four Corners and beyond Sure, Denver may not be some out-of-the-way small town Colorado destination, but you should still get outta town and visit the First Unitarian building (1400 Lafayette Street) in honor of Pride, and in the name of equality. It is, after all, the first official LGBTQ historical landmark in the state. It may seem odd that a church ANYWHERE would be a gay landmark, but if you look at the history behind First Unitarian, it’s clear why this building was deemed a historical LGBT marker. The building was erected in the 1890s, and First Unitarian has occupied the space since the 1950s. The church has long been known for its social justice work, and their involvement in the forefront of the fight for equality can be traced all the way back
to the ’50s, well before any churches, community groups, or otherwise were opening their doors to, or fighting for, the gay community.
and Lesbian Center (now called The Center) got its start in the church’s basement. The LGBT nonprofit is still around, and these days, it’s located on Colfax Ave., one block away from First Unitarian.
First Unitarian first began fighting for the LGBTQ community in the 1950s by offering support to the Mattachine Society, one of the first gay rights groups in the United States. The Mattachine Society was started in Los Angeles by communist and labor activist Harry Hay, and other branches – including the one in Denver – followed. The group’s main goal was to serve as “a service and welfare organization devoted to the protection and improvement of Society’s Androgynous Minority,” i.e. to protect and improve the rights of gay men, who had almost no societal protections at the time. Groups like the Mattachine Society were hardly the norm at the time, but the Denver church offered the advocates a place to organize. The group moved into one of the adjacent houses owned by First Unitarian. First Unitarian’s fight for equal rights
In 1975, the building made even more history when it became the site of one of the first gay weddings in Colorado. Couple Richard Adams and Tony Sullivan managed to get their hands on a marriage license, which was issued by a defiant Boulder county clerk, who deemed it legal because nothing in the law forbade it. Not only was that clerk a damn-the-Man badass, but so was First Unitarian, which welcomed the wedding with open, equality-loving arms. Wikipedia
»» The First Unitarian Society of Denver, located at 1400 Lafayette Street. continued over the following decades, and in the 1970s, the building became the de facto headquarters of the Gay Coalition of Denver. In fact, the Gay
For all of those reasons, the building was given historical landmark status just a couple of years ago, meaning that it will forever be recognized for its contributions to the LGBTQ community. Checking out a place so rife with history is definitely worth a road trip and a fight with the Denver traffic. —— Angelica Leicht

»» People wanting to get a look at the 416 Fire drove up Missionary Ridge Road to see the fire burning down Hermosa Cliffs June 6 above U.S. Highway 550 on the southeast side of the fire, and also burning above County Road 201 on the west side.
The local cannabis community is fighting fire with fire Roll ’em up, light ’em up, smoke ’em up, donate, fundraise. You can feel good about humming that little improvised Cypress Hill ditty this Friday, when the local cannabis community will be coming together to help fight fire with fire. And by that, we mean they’re throwing a badass fundraiser to help the firefighting efforts taking place in and around Durango. The 416 Fire was started June 1, and has taken a huge toll on the area. While firefighters and first defenders are making headway, they still have a long road ahead of them. As of our print deadline (Monday, June 18), the 416 Fire had consumed 34,161 acres and was 30 percent contained. Thousands of people have been evacuated, and while many families are slowly being let back into their homes, there are still plenty of people displaced by the fire. And, between the firefighting efforts and the hit to local tourism, the full economic impact won’t be clear until well after the fire has been put out. That isn’t expected to be until the end of July. Those economic and social impacts are precisely why the cannabis community will be throwing “Fighting Fire With Fire,” a fundraiser to help the folks fighting, and those affected by, the fire. “We believe it is important to bring the community together, no matter the
nature of our business,” Ben Peters, director of marketing and sales for Durango Cannabis Company, said. “The local cannabis community and supporters throughout Colorado are showing their united support for the firefighters, emergency services, and evacuees of the 416 Fire.” Peters and the folks at Durango Cannabis Company have been spearheading the effort, The Fighting Fire With Fire fundraiser will take place on June 22 at the Cannabis Discovery Center (965 Main Ave.). There will be food, music, an auction, cash bar, fundraising raffle, and pop-up merchandise for sale. The event will be open to the public, Peters said, and he’s encouraging everyone who can stop in to do so. You can bid on those badass silent auction items, throw your tickets in on some sweet raffles, or drop off donations and grab a drink or three, if that’s your jam. “As a community, we can all agree that Durango is an incredibly unique and amazing mountain town to live in, with endless outdoor activity options all year round. Supporting those fighting to protect our ability to enjoy those activities is imperative,” Peters said. All proceeds from Fighting Fire With Fire will go to the Durango Colorado 416 fire relief fund. —— Angelica Leicht

Media representation and limited lesbian outreach may be a couple of the reasons there are fewer kings. Winterscheid said it takes a lot of courage to get on stage, so some who might want to try it will shy away. Winterscheid said that part of the reason drag queens have dominated the scene is simply because they’re infatuating.

“There is something about the queen community. When you watch the queen’s persona evolve in the dressing room, then you see them get into full drag, it is a whole thing of character development and transformation,” Winterscheid said. “You can make the booty. You can make the hips. You can make the boobs.” But for every stuffed booty there’s a bulge. There are plenty of king gender benders who transform just as much as any queen.

the men who outdo the ladies in style and sex appeal

nstead of adding extensions to her lids for full, thick lashes, Jen Powell takes her time applying tiny, individual blonde hairs with precision to her upper lip. A bow-tie and a pair lens-less knock-off Ray Bans completes the transformation of Jen into Adam All, Powell’s drag king persona. Powell has developed Adam All over the past decade, and she’s just one of the many women who’ve taken the plunge into the world of drag. Any article on drag, including this one, will mention “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” now in its 10th season. The show brought the sashay into many Midwestern homes, which were, for the most part, more familiar with gaits and gallops. These days, it’s not so unusual to see a man dressed as a beautiful woman with a fat cap’s worth of eyeliner, Ursula’s blue shadow, closer-to-God hair, tucked and top heavy. But their counterpart, the drag king, isn’t as well-known, even though kings have been around since the 19th century. Queens take the female stereotype and amp it up as high as their size 15 heels. Kings do the same – their goatee-d alter-egos are macho, metro, sleazy, sexy, and everything else under, and above, the sun. The inclusive king scene is not limited to lesbians dressing as men. Kings can be cis, trans, bi, queer, or anything that falls within that spectrum. Groups in Denver, such as Mile High Kingdom and Tranzend, are propelling the art form statewide and beyond, but the Durango king scene is limited. There are only a handful of kings, including Seeley Mudd, Blaze, and a few others. Maryl Winterscheid, AKA Myster E, has been dressing in drag since 2015. She said there are only a few times a year she has the ability to perform in Durango – Summer and Winter Pride and Dragrango – so she joined a burlesque troupe to have more opportunities to flaunt her boy band Bieber in fishnets. So why the matriarchy?

Murray Hill, also known as Mr. Showbiz, is a Brooklyn-based trailblazer who has been entertaining in New York clubs since the mid’90s. Hill’s fame grew with his polyester suit collection. Today he is still “slinging shtick” in ugly ties in NYC, across the nation, and internationally. Hailing from England, Adam All is a metro geek who loves arena rock. His simple-mindedness adds to his charm. His drag relationship with hyper-feminine girlfriend and queen, Apple Derrieres, explores gender dynamics in a new, brightly-colored way. And passionate entertainer Miles Long, now living in Tennessee, has been on television and drag stages for the past 8 years. Long is as active offstage as on. surprised to learn about Mr. Showbiz. I’m one of the best ping-ping players in Brooklyn... and I do eat vegetables. Tell us about when you first grew a mustache. I barely remember this morning! When I was around 6 years old, I remember painting on a ’stache to impersonate Schneider from “One Day At A Time” (the original series in the ’70s). It’s been on ever since... and the tool belt, (but) only on the weekends now. Were you born with it? Whatever this question is referring to, the answer is yes. Photo by Carrie Strong

ter. It’s the magic miracle stretch fabricthat comes in some of the most appalling colors and patterns I’ve ever seen. I love my polyester suits. And, since they are basically plastic, inside my suit is like a little pressure cooker, sweat machine. Great for weight loss! We’re curious how uninitiated straight men respond to you. ut what’s an initiated straight man? Ha! I perform B for all kinds of people. When I’m with the guys, I’m
just one of the guys. I gotta say, most straight guys want my full head of hair. They get a little jealous. Hey, who can blame them? Dean or Frank? Sammy, then Dean, then a cheeseburger. Favorite cocktail? Alka-Seltzer with lime. You’re larger-than-life and always on. Tell us something people would be
What effect has the ’stache had on your life? It’s been a life changer, pal! It’s kinda like, “My milkshake brings all the guys to the yard,” but completely different. You know what I’m saying? Or, love it “like a fat kid loves cake.” My ’stache has been a magnet for all kinds of things, especially heckling. I’ve been called Magnum P.I., El Chapo, Oliver Hardy – it’s all over the place. People ask me all the time, “Is it real?” Hey, of course it is! I’m a natural!

Both are excellent, but your refined fashion sense and love of arena rock clash. Please explain the disconnect. I’m obsessed with the suit as an outfit. It’s my go-to for all occasions. Outwardly expressing my love of bright color combos was a liberating turning point in my fashion consciousness. I’ve always remembered rock legends as having a wild sense of dramatic flamboyance – glitter, sequins, leotards, flashing neon, and bold, bright designs, so it never felt that big a leap for me to merge my own look with the songs I love the most. They seem to have a similar resonance. Besides, what makes a man? Well, a huge range of things actually. It’s a broad rainbow of gender expression, as is my suit collection. Tell us about your relationship with Apple. What is it like when two big personalities are a couple?
Well, it’s a strict training regime of Netflix, wine, and cheese, though I have to say regular sex is a great ab definer. Maybe he’s born with it (maybe it’s Maybelline)? I like to run, swim, and weight train. And, of course, yoga is the central rock of my workout rituals. I’ve been told my abs are so defined they look, well, unrealistic. But I say, to hell with reality when you can have living-cartoon-Ken-Doll realness! You like to use the element of surprise in your performances. What is something that would surprise most people to know about Adam? I’m not that surprising really. Under all the glitter and costumes, I’m just a regular guy – whatever that is. Something that people may be surprised to know is that I’m pretty practical. I’m a qualified joiner (woodworker), and I like making things when I’ve got the time. I try and bring that into my show when I can – a bit of arts and crafts or something. But more importantly, as it turns out, I’m a Ravenclaw. Surprised the shit out of me!
Apple and I fit together very well. We seem to be reaching from different ends of a spectrum at times, and that makes for a really dynamic and productive partnership. We’re very often in tune with each other, musically and physically – sometimes psychically, which is terrifying. But I’d be nothing without her, and we have a very deep, inescapable love for one another. She’s got a sixth sense for impending doom, which is utterly uncanny, so as long as I do what she tells me, even if it seems counterproductive, we tend to wind our way through life’s storms together, reasonably unscathed. She’s a powerhouse, which makes her the perfect woman for me. Have you ever considered wearing contacts or getting Lasik? What’s wrong with my glasses? I like them, I can see things, and they match. I’m committed now. I’ve got tens of pairs matching all my accessories. What would I do with them all? What would Adam be without his RoyBuns?
Miles Long Instagram: @the_ mileslong You won Mr. Oklahoma Bold and Beautiful in 2017. What does it take to win?
Yes, I won the Mr. division of the Oklahoma Bold and Beautiful Pageant. It takes passion, determination, creativity, talent, and fashion to win. Since you mention fashion, tell us about your style. My fashion is a touch eclectic, ranging from urban hip-hop to GQ modern. One night I might walk out in a three-piece suit, then jeans, (a) baseball t-shirt, and a snapback. And, every now and again I like to throw themed costumes into the mix. I like to be as well-rounded as I can. Being a shorter guy, do other men give you crap for it? I’ve been short my whole life, and I’ve had my fair share of jokes, but it really doesn’t bother me anymore, because as soon as I hit any stage, all eyes are on me and no one can tell me anything. I feel larger than life. The Oklahoma Bold and Beautiful Pageantry System brings kings and queens together and celebrates both. Is this usually the case in the drag community?
Outs Gril ide Campl w/ Luxuring y
(The) Oklahoma Bold and Beautiful System is one of the very few systems to group all of the male sub-divisions – be it male lead, drag king, or trans – together into the Mr. Oklahoma Bold and Beautiful contest, as well as group all of the female subdivisions – be it queen, diva, or trans – together into the Miss Oklahoma Bold and Beautiful contest. Have you always had a natural stage presence, or did it take practice? A mixture of both, honestly. I was comfortable with being on stage from participating in plays back in school, but figuring out what I liked doing on stage and what worked for me personally with makeup and costumes, that’s what took the most practice. Do you have a pickup line that you use? I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a pickup line in my possession. But think about this – if I told you, then it wouldn’t be just MY pickup line anymore, would it?

In which we review a brand new strain called Billy D Prohibition is killing it with these new strains. Last week we reviewed Bay Dream, a strain that’s brand new to the dispensary. And THIS week, we got to review Billy D, a strain that’s new to this universe (or the rec side of the dispensary, anyway). We’re lucky, lucky writers.
kinda late at night when I smoked, and I made the mistake of hopping up all willy-nilly to shut off the kitchen light. As soon as I stood up, this strain hit me right in the brain before I even knew what was happening. My head felt like a very inflated balloon. A fun balloon, mind you, but still a balloon.
expected, given the strain’s genetics, that this bud would smell overwhelmingly like skunk and diesel fuel. Perhaps I am becoming immune to the stench of skunky gas, but it wasn’t as obvious as I’d expected. The strain smells more clean and earthy than skunky, which is cool by me.
So, about Billy D. This strain is a sativa hybrid, and is a cross between the famed Sour Diesel and Jedi Kush, an indica created from a cross Death Star and SFV OG Kush. In case you were wondering, those are two very good strains. Billy D’s buds are a dark, dense emerald green, with just the slightest hint of orange woven in. It clocks in at 19.2 percent THC, and while that’s a pretty darn high THC content, it’s not up there with the Bruce Banners or Chemdawgs of the world.
I spent the next hour or so on the couch feeling like my head was full of helium, but it was odd, because normally that feeling leads to the whole deep-in-the-recesses-of-my-own-brain stoned. You know what I’m talking about – the kind of head trip where you’re in your own world, devoid of any desire to socialize, mostly because your lips won’t cooperate. But that’s not what happened with ol’ Billy D. The cerebral effects were there, but it was still a clear-headed high, and there was just enough of a body high to be interesting without being overwhelming. My arms and legs were feeling it, but nothing went numb. Twas quite a surprise.
I was also surprised that the smoke from this strain was so heavy – perhaps from the Jedi Kush genetics – that it made me cough like I was back in high school. It was to the point where I felt it necessary to check my pipe for rogue residue or ash. That was not the problem. The problem was my janky throat. Thank god I was alone or I would have been ashamed.
Not that it isn’t strong as hell, mind you. I ground up just enough to load a bowl (smoking table for one, please) and it was MORE than enough to do the trick. I was noticeably stoned about three hits in. I know this because it was
But then again, I was surprised at a few of Billy D’s qualities. I really
Choking aside, this was a baller strain. I was definitely high, but was also clear-headed, and once I started coming down, I passed right the hell out where I was sitting and did not wake up until 6:45 a.m. the next morning. Prohibition knocked it – and me – out of the park with this one.

Lucy, a high-CBD strain worthy of a Beatles reference Let’s talk about Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Or, just Lucy, a strain of cannabis that – unlike much of what’s on the market these days – is low in THC and high in CBD, the lesser-revered, but extremely important, cannabinoid.
help your ailments.
Lucy, an indica-dominant strain, and the flower we’re reviewing this week contains somewhere between 2.7 percent and 4.23 percent THC. The CBD content ranges from 5.7 percent to about 8.65 percent, so there’s clearly a huge difference between the THC and CBD percentage. Why, you ask? Well, let me tell you. While a lot of cannabis consumers are looking for a high THC content to, well, get super high, not EVERYONE is looking to be on another level – especially during the day when they need to be productive. And, before you ask why they don’t just avoid smoking during the day, let’s clarify. Lots of people are using marijuana to help alleviate pain and inflammation, so a lower THC percentage/high CBD percentage is ideal for those times when they don’t want to be high-high, but DO want some pain relief. CBD won’t get ya stoned, but it will
Moving on. There are quite a few high CBD/low THC strains around, but Lucy’s ratio is kinda badass, because it keeps some of the THC in there for good measure. And let me tell you, despite it being a lower percentage, that freaking THC still works just fine. I smoked a bowl of Lucy at about 9 p.m. or so, figuring that with THC percentages between 2 and 4 percent, I’d be solid and sober enough to write this review after. Welp, that was not the case. The hits were smooth and herbal, and I found myself mesmerized with how evenly Lucy burned. And then I was stoned. Like, for real super-chill stoned. I went from 0 to 180 in just a few hits, although it wasn’t a hardcore, headin-the-clouds stoned. I was just super relaxed, and my whole body felt really warm and fuzzy, like I was wrapped in a heated blanket. I’d been knee-deep in a documentary before lighting up the bowl, and had stopped at Sonic for a cherry limeade and
some of that sweet Sonic ice right before, too. It was the perfect combo, you guys. The documentary, the crunchy little marbles of Sonic ice, and the happy, relaxed feeling. I highly suggest it. It wasn’t long before my eyes started to feel really heavy and were fighting with my brain, which was still clear as a bell and enjoying the chilled out buzz from the weed. I eventually gave in to the heavy iron feeling of my eyelids and drifted off to sleep, but not before I’d happily exhausted my crunchy ice and about twothirds of the documentary. I subsequently woke up feeling starved at 3 a.m. and ate a bunch of pudding. Worth it. If it hadn’t been an evening smoking session, I’m confident I would have been pretty darn productive after smoking some Lucy. I’m also confident that you’ll like this strain, whether or not you’d normally go for one with higher THC levels. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with some Lucy in your life.

[ weed ] Seeing Through the Smoke Christopher Gallagher
Up your smoking game and elevate your enjoyment
A
nd, just like that, the summer season is upon us. My recommendation for enjoying the upcoming dog days is to switch up your smoking game by investigating some bygone or new-to-you smoking methods. Over the next few weeks, we are going to take a look at a few products and preps that will elevate your enjoyment of cannabis in the beautiful days to come. Number one piece of advice: If you do not have one, get yourself a bong. If your bong from your college days is packed away somewhere in the basement or attic, get yourself to the basement or attic, and bring that bong into your living/smoking space. Also, if your bong is just a teeny, tiny little thing, it is time to upgrade. My size requirement has a standard attached: The effective bong should not be easily portable. Unless shenanigans are involved, you are not taking a bong to the movies or a concert or on public transit. About a foot tall is the range. If you want to travel with a smoking apparatus, the bong is probably not the one. If you decide you want to make a camping trip a little extra by taking your foot-tall glass, understand that it is going to require some extensive packing to make sure it is safe. This will likely involve a cardboard tube and a bunch of bubble wrap or newspaper. I completely and fully counsel anybody looking to acquire a water pipe to go with glass. It is the standard for a reason. Not only is glass the medium that lets the creative artistry of cannabis delivery systems shine their brightest, it is also just cleaner (by every standard)… and classier. Way classier. It can be a little more expensive, but that is usually at the high end of the price range, where things can get into collector’s numbers with regard to some of the stunning works of art avail-

ones that will fit the bill. You may even end up preferring one of the flashy designs available in this heat-hardened clay. Pro tip: When choosing a slide, you want one with an opening approximately the size of a quarter. A little bit smaller is okay, but you do not want to be fussing with what is basically your bowl, which will also be made of glass, if it is only the size of a dime. It is going to clog up every third hit and you will, soon enough, break it, and you will be sad because… Second Pro Tip: nobody buys two slides, but you will, because you, mi amigo, are smart. There are two occasions that your brand new, shiny 12-inch glass tool (hehehe) will be worth its weight in gold. The first is on those cool, rainy days that float through a couple of times a season and make you wonder if the calendar has jumped to mid-October. Grab a pair of sweats and a sweatshirt, throw on “Inception” or your favorite cartoon flick, pack a few bingers, and enjoy your day inside. The other is at your barbecues. Keep it indoors – there is no good reason to have anything more breakable than a beer bottle out in the yard – and invite your guests to give it a go-round. It might be exactly like watching folks take their first dabs, but people will cough and they will get off. So, that, DGO, is my advice to get the summer season rolling. In the upcoming weeks we will talk about the engineering involved in gravity bongs, how to roll just about anything, some nifty, portable smoking methods, and a bunch of other ways to elevate your smoking experience.
able out there. If you are willing to drop $100, you will do just fine for yourself. If you want to save a few ducats, there are some pretty cool ceramic

Horoscope ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be diplomatic and patient when talking to partners and close friends this week because people are on edge. Romantic quarrels are possible. Easy does it.
Relationships with partners and close friends are a challenge this week. Don’t be critical. Instead, focus on hard work and making improvements to your health.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)
VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)
Be patient with family members this week. Likewise, be patient with neighbors and siblings because it’s easy to be too sharp or too quick with your words.
Be patient with co-workers this week. Arguments about how to do things or something to do with finances will be anti-productive. Don’t be critical about kids, either. Easy does it.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Parents must be patient with kids this week. Discussions about money and finances will not go well. Keep smiling. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Quarrels about money and possessions are likely this week. You also might be at odds with a female family member. Instead of arguing, channel your energy into work – especially gardening.
Bizarro
LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22)
LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Be patient with romantic partners this week. Likewise, be patient with bosses, parents and VIPs. Everyone is looking for a fight this week or a reason to get mad. Keep your head down. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Increased chaos and activity on the home front might be exasperating this week. Cope as best you can. Steer clear of discussions about politics and
religion. (Yikes!) SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Because this is an argumentative week for many, you might be distracted while driving, biking or jogging. Be aware and mindful. Avoid arguments with a female friend. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Don’t get on the wrong side of a parent or boss this week. Steer clear of this. Likewise, avoid arguments about money or possessions. Focus on work and the tasks at hand. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) You have lots of energy because Mars is in your sign this week; however, it is at odds with Venus, which means agreement with others will not come easily. Avoid arguments about racial matters and foreign issues.
PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Although you are in a playful mood, this week, you might be at odds with someone about shared property or how they contribute to something – or not. Focus on your own issues, not the issues of others. BORN THIS WEEK You are charismatic, attractive and optimistic. You are also protective and caring. People like you. During this busy, social year, you want to live life to the fullest! It will be a fun-loving time. Appreciate the happiness and beauty around you. Be grateful for what you have. Focus on the positive. Expect increased popularity and warm friendships that will delight you. © 2018 King Features Syndicate Inc.
Drag me Pre-RuPaul RuPaul may be the best-known drag queen to strut across the catwalk, but believe it or not, Ms. Sashay, Shontay is hardly the first queen on the scene. In fact, the Aztecs, Incas, Egyptians, and the Japanese all werk-ed it well before Ru ever slipped those feet in a pair of sky-high heels. Gender-bending bard Drag has always had its place in the theatre – the Greeks were all about gender-bending – and even Shakespeare got in on the fun. Female roles were played by men during Elizabethan times – women were barred from acting – but Shakey took it to an extreme, with men playing women who liked men. Get it! Naming conventions While there have been plenty of clever drag names on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” not a single queen with a name starting in Q, U, X or Z that has ever taken part in the show. Contact sports Speaking of “Drag Race,” according to legend, that “Drag is not a contact sport” lip-sync was filmed five times so producers could get the perfect shot.

[single life]
SWIPE RIGHT
We launched our singles feature last week highlighting a couple of brave souls who were willing to be our guinea pigs. They put themselves out there in ink as we played matchmaker like Italian mothas finding their son a lovely young lady, unlike these puttanas walking around like they the queen of England or somethin’. We expect to be the godparents of our singles’ future children if it works out. If not, that’s on you bb. This week, we bring you two hawties from the LGBT community who aren’t afraid to speak their minds. Get to know them a little bit, and if you’re interested in setting up a date, email us at dgohotsingles@dgomag.com and tell us about yourself. Your guess is as good as ours for what it might lead to. If you want to be featured or know somebody who is single and ready for romance, drop us a line. Remi Majeski

What’s your poison?
Why are you still single?
Tequila. Pretty much anything with tequila. It could even be just tequila straight. If it has tequila in it, that’s my drink of choice for sure.
I’m fresh on the market – like three months. I don’t know why I’m still single because I’m never single. But I’m enjoying it, I guess. (I’m) having a good time being able to do what I want, but I’m definitely a relationship person. I’m really good at taking care of people and sometimes missing myself so it’s been nice.
Why are you still single? I would like to say that it’s because I work so much and I don’t have a whole lot of time. That’s part of it. The other part is (that) I might be a little too picky. I’m generally not interested in people interested in me, and when I’m interested in somebody, they’re not interested in me. You can’t find anybody that has the same vibe as you. It’s a Virgo thing. We are super picky and kind of high maintenance and a lot to handle. I’m not afraid to admit that. What qualities do you look for in a person? I like somebody who is very comfortable with themselves, and somebody who is not afraid to be who they are – not afraid to let loose. That’s who I am. I don’t hold back. I don’t have a filter, a sensor or anything. I let people know how it is. I’m not rude unless I have to be... I don’t like people who are ashamed of themselves. Know who you are. Be true to yourself. That’s one of the most important things to me, because it took me a long time to get that way with myself. Why did your last relationship end? That is a hard question. There was a significant age discrepancy. Physically there weren’t too many years between us, but mentally there was a huge gap. He wasn’t comfortable with what was going on, and we just needed to do our own thing.
Do you prefer texting or calling to get to know someone? Texting for sure. I hate talking on the phone. Oh my gosh, I hate it so much. I hate getting phone calls. I hate making phone calls. I hate voicemails. I hate playing phone tag. I prefer texting just overall. I am so busy a lot of the time, it’s just a lot easier to look at a text and respond when I have the time to do it. It’s a lot simpler for me to text. What do you like to cook for others? I really enjoy cooking Mexican food. It’s been my favorite food my entire life. That’s all my mom ate when she was pregnant with me, so I’m pretty sure that’s why. I love cooking Mexican food. That’s when I’m in my element most is when I’m cooking, too. It doesn’t seem like a white boy like me can cook Mexican food, but I’m not afraid to admit. I’m really good at cooking Mexican food… I have a whole spice cabinet dedicated to Mexican spices. I always have pounds of lard and masa in my cupboard for when I make tamales. Mexican food is a huge labor of love. You have to really be dedicated for it to turn out right.
For a Scorpio that’s interesting. I know. I told you, don’t let it scare you away. I’m different. I promise. What qualities are you looking for in a person? I’m looking for a dime. Best top of the line. Cute face, little waist with a big behind… That’s what I’m lookin’ for. Oh geez. Sometimes I’m a little shallow, I guess, I’ll be honest. But someone who likes to go on a whim and doesn’t have to be so super structured. Someone who likes to sit on the couch but also likes to go out and do stuff as well. A lady on the streets but a freak in the sheets. That’s another one that I like to use as well… Dating in this town has been different for me. Since this is the Pride issue, there haven’t been too many women who have been completely into women, you could say. Are you completely into women? Absolutely. I was born this way, girl, for sure. What do people not know about you? That I love to cook. A lot of people
know that though. Let’s not use that. Oh man. That’s tough. I’m really girly, actually. If people know me, they know a lot. I’m actually really domesticated. Rough on the edges, but soft at heart. Oh geez. Do you have Peter Pan syndrome? Yes, yes I do, but I’m motivated and driven. I’m a bartender. I’m 31. But I love living in Durango, and this is what seems to fit for right now. And, time flies when you’re having fun. That’s a true fucking fact. But, I’ll be honest, I do have Peter Pan syndrome. I’m a lost boy. But you’ve been actively dating. A lot of people who have Peter Pan syndrome don’t even date. I do not sleep around; that is one thing that people don’t know about me. They think I do, but I do NOT. I’m a serial dater, I’ll say it for sure. Literally, three months is the longest I’ve ever been single, which is ridiculous and it’s not that long. Friends, that’s been nice. Being single is the friend time. You lose that in relationships sometimes.
