What to expect at the annual Ag Expo

F

or nearly four decades the nonprofit organization Four States Ag Expo has presented a three-day event for residents to gather with other farm and ranch owners to learn more about local agriculture and raising livestock. The comprehensive show always features fun activities, live entertainment and educational events in addition to vendor booths that offer products, services and networking opportunities for attendees.

MORE TO E X P LOR E Dozens of vendors will offer supplies and services to every attendee at the show. They might also offer some insightful industry advice, if you ask nicely.

Enjoy a small market, including homegrown and handmade goods from regional operations. To purchase items from these vendors, bring some extra cash to the show. Riding, training and care clinics for animal owners include educational demonstrations for attendees of all ages. Special experiences for younger groups, including close encounters with animals and practical skillbuilding exercises. Presentation of Colors, Pledge of Allegiance and live entertainment daily!

Without the support of these individuals, and yours as attendees, the value of the show would be in decline. Thank you for continuing to support the local expo by providing feedback and helping us improve the accessibility of sustainable agriculture education to residents, both young and old, across the greater Four Corners region. We hope you enjoy our event and entertainment this year, and we look forward to growing and evolving the Four States Ag Expo in 2022.

Guests demonstrate skills, techniques WEST TAY LOR In 2008, successful IT professional and businessman West Taylor moved his family to his grandfather’s small horse ranch in Fremont, Utah. Though he wasn’t raised around horses, he adopted two mustangs from the Bureau of Land Management. Today, Taylor is a leading scientific researcher on understanding the neurochemistry of the horse. Inspired by the book “Evidence Based Horsemanship” by Martin Black and Stephen Peters, he uses his scientific background to train horses. He will demonstrate techniques for trailer loading and other trailer issues.

PRA IRIE FIR E P E RCH E RON S Dave Harwood is a farmer and owner of Prairie Fire Percherons in Ignacio. Harwood has been breeding and raising Percheron horses for nearly 25 years. Harwood also offers carriage, stagecoach and

sleigh rides locally throughout the year. Harwood will showcase the strength of his horses, and educate attendees with demonstrations on harnessing and log skidding.

SA N J UA N M OU N T ED A RC H ERS Ken and Carol Queen first joined the Mounted Archery Association of America and attended a mounted archery competition in Scottsdale, Arizona as volunteers. Both are experienced with horses and archery, and wanted to be immersed in a sport that marries the hobbies. They are the first people in Colorado to reach Horse Archer level 1, and now they participate in national competitions. They founded the Durango-based club, San Juan Mounted Archers, which boasts members from western Colorado and central New Mexico. The group will host a national ranking competition at River Bend Ranch in June.

KATH Y K LI X Farrier and animal chiropractor, Kathy Klix, is passionate about improving the quality of life for animals. Over the years, she has worked as a trail guide and in veterinary hospitals before becoming a farrier. While working through training programs with animals, Klix noticed the remarkable benefits of chiropractic care for large animals and livestock. In 2018, she graduated from Logan University with a doctorate in chiropractic care for animals. Klix will be available during the three-day expo to demonstrate how she performs an evaluation and discuss her treatment style.

MATT LAW LO R Farrier Matt Lawlor is dedicated to keeping horses healthy and happy by providing farrier services in the Four Corners region. Lawlor understands that hoof care is critical to comfort and well-being for the animal, and he uses time-tested techniques to ensure proper equine podiatry. Lawlor will offer a presentation on hemodynamic horseshoeing for Ag Expo attendees, beginning with hoof anatomy and physiology, and graduating to polymer horsehoe application and modifications.

MEGAN PR I NT For over a decade, Megan Print has worked to foster and train mustangs. Over the years, Print has helped hundreds of wild horses find homes. In 2018, Print received an opportunity to relocate to New Mexico to work as an Animal Caretaker with Carson National Forest, which manages a population of around 400 wild horses in two separate districts, Jicarilla and El Rito. Her day-to-day responsibilities include training and managing the horse population through fertility control and adoptions. Welcome Print to the Ag Expo, and stop by to see her demonstration on gentling a wild horse at this year’s event.
