Experts offer advice for rural living
Four States Ag Expo invites experts to share in educational courses and discussions. Here’s a look at the available presentations. See location details on the complete schedule, pages 8-9. PRIVATE PESTICIDE APPLICATORS WORKSHOP Dolores County CSU Extension director and chairman of the Development Corporation, Gus Westerman, will host the private applicators pesticide workshop from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Friday. Earn credits and renew your license. ESTIMATING FORAGE PRODUCTION FOR GRAZING Montezuma County CSU Extension livestock and agriculture agent Emily Lockhard will discuss tools to plan for drought Friday from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. STATE OF HEMP IN THE U.S. Abdel Berrada conducts research with a variety of crops and environments, but his focus is soil health and industrial hemp. He provides expert advice on hemp insurance claims and litigation. On Friday from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m., Berrada will talk about how to rekindle interest in this remarkable plant. CHANGING OUR MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL TRAJECTORY (COMET) Arlina Yazzie with Montezuma County Public Health and Montezuma County CSU Extension Director Greg Felsen will offer a presentation on rural mental health titled Changing Our Mental and Emotional Trajectory (COMET), which includes suicide awareness training from 10 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday. AG RISK ADVISORS: WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT Ag Risk Advisors will host a presentation from 3:45 - 4:15 p.m. Friday and 1 - 1:30 p.m. Saturday about the tools available to help producers reduce risk and increase bottom line. TALKS WITH TEMPLE GRANDIN Temple Grandin is an author, autism advocate and professor of animal science at Colorado State University. Grandin developed an objective scoring system for assessing how cattle and pigs are handled at meat plants. She teaches courses on facility design and animal welfare. She will provide advice to attendees on both agriculture and autism.
