FROM THE BLOG
»» News from our site on the interwebs you may have missed Alien cult = not great idea If you’re reading this, we sincerely hope you know by now that joining a cult is a bad idea. If Charles Manson and NXIVM didn’t bode enough of a warning, perhaps this online alien cult-related murder will. Barbara Rogers, a Pennsylvania woman who was involved in an online alien cult, Sherry Shriner, along with her now deceased boyfriend, Steven Mineo, was sentenced to 15 to 40 years in prison for the 2017 murder of Mineo, according to news station WNEP. Rogers, who was found guilty in March of third-degree murder, has always maintained that Mineo’s death was accidental. As Rogers tells it, in July 2017, after a night of drinking, the two went back to their Tobyhanna apartment where Mineo allegedly put the gun to his head, placed her hands on the gun, and told her to pull the trigger. Rogers said she didn’t realize the weapon was loaded. “We are most likely going to be appealing it. It was very unfair,” Roger said, according to WNEP. Now to hold up, rewind, and go over how a friggin’ alien cult fits into all of this. Well, as previously stated, Rogers and Mineo were part of Sherry Shriner, named for the leader of the group, Sherry Shriner. The crew believes in the impending doom of a Revelations-style end of days as well as extraterrestrials. While neither of those beliefs is inherently bad or even uncommon, things get a little intense when you find out the group theorized “that a group of alien reptiles is subverting the human race through mind control,” according to the Associated Press.

Punk in Drublic ... in Red Rocks

Mother Earth’s Plantasia is a weird, compelling record worth a spin Whether you are a casual reader of my column or one of the two weekly devotees, you’ll know that I have an affinity for certain old school record labels. And by that, I mean that I still believe in the notion of trusting a record label, their roster, and their judgment when it comes to new recordings or re-releases. Having worked in the music industry on some fringe level since college, I’ve been fortunate enough to build on and forge relationships with some record promoters, public and college radio servicing departments (when they exist), and in many cases, independent labels (owned and operated by the artists themselves), which just want their music out there in the ether and played when applicable. One such label that has impressed me for about a decade or so is New York-based Sacred Bones. Their roster is as varied as it is impressive, spanning various genres, aural delights, and sonic curiosities. Along with new artists on the cutting edge of experimental, punk, art house, electronica, and a swath of various sub-genres, the label has been known to reissue compelling, long-outof-print oddities and specialty records. And that brings me to this weeks highlighted album, Mort Garson’s “Mother Earth’s Plantasia”, which was originally released in 1976.
“The music is generally ethereal, primitive, ambient electronic music composed and performed by Garson on a Moog synthesizer ... it’s pretty pleasing.” Call it serendipity, call it the cosmos aligning, call it a random coincidence – I don’t care. Call it what you will. I choose to call it kismet because 1.) phonetically, it’s a great word, and 2.) it was the name of my dear friend’s now defunct record, art and DIY space in St Louis. Not more than a week before a digital copy of this album landed in my inbox, I heard the following story from Fort Lewis College Vinyl Club President Noah Schlosser: “While working at Boho Records and
Rags in Santa Clarita, California, the owners of the store came back after scoring a ‘solid collection.’ The collection consisted of, in fact, solid albums in great condition.” At the back of the pile was what they called “the icing on the cake,” an album titled “Mother Earth’s Plantasia.” I asked them what this album was, and they told me it was some weird electronic/ psych music that was supposed to help plants grow, and the reason it was so rare was that the only way to obtain the album was to either receive it free with a houseplant purchase from an L.A. plant store called Mother Earth’s, or with the purchase of a Simmons mattress from Sears (yes, mattress – that is not a typo).
was blown away. OK, I’m not a record collector in the sense that I’m wowed by the rarest and most expensive – at all – but add a descriptor like “weird electronic/psych music that was supposedly supposed to help plants grow” and I’m sold.
The music is generally ethereal, primitive, ambient electronic music composed and performed by Garson on a Moog synthesizer. It wasn’t until I looked further into Garson’s discography that it became apparent the album was actually one of his later works, appearing near the very end of his decade-long career of recording albums. While this record might only appeal to a niche group, the select few who appreciate such left-field Fascinated by the artwork and story, I rarities, it’s still pretty pleasing to most decided to give it a listen. It was a decent I’ve shared it with. album. Not really the type of album I Give it a listen yourself, wherever you would listen to or put in my collection stream such things, or better still, buy based on the music. I asked the owners the physical LP direct from Sacred Bones of the store how much they thought in standard black or deluxe green vinyl. they could get for the album and they —— Jon Lynch told me anywhere from $200 to $400. I

Welcome back, Pork and Brew Festival. Once featured on The Cooking Channel’s “Carnival Eats,” this Rio Rancho festival is inviting all barbecued pork and beer lovers to town July 5-7 for a weekend of glorious feasting and drinking. What a way to wrap up your Fourth of July weekend. While the organization has not yet released who will be there serving up food and drink, according to the Albuquerque Journal, last year there were 18 food vendors, including nine barbecue vendors and nine non-barbecue vendors, who were selling everything from tacos and lemonade to funnel cakes – essentially all your favorite county fair food options. Last year’s brewers included Albuquerque’s Red Door Brewing Co. and Tractor Brewing Co., as well as Cazuela’s

Check out The Boathouse at Electra before it closes again Part of me doesn’t even want to tell you about the amazing dinner I just had at the Boathouse at Electra Lake. If I do, you’ll make a reservation. Seating here is pretty limited, so I might not be able to get a table the next time I want to go. But, that’s selfish, and I know in my heart that the best things in life are better if they’re shared, so I’ll let you in on a little secret: The Boathouse is one of the best restaurants in town, and it’s only open for a few months a year. You’ll find this relatively hidden restaurant within the private community of Electra Sporting Club. If you’re not a member, no worries; make a reservation and you’ll gain entry to the exclusive lake. The building itself is pretty cool: It’s on an island that’s accessible by bridge (or boat I suppose, although I’ve never tried). Whoever built it in the 1920s had a nautical theme in mind because the entire ceiling is shaped like the bottom of a boat. The décor gives it a feel of a friend’s cabin, and although this might be a weird comment, they have the absolute coziest bathrooms in town (check it out and tell me I’m wrong). As you walk in, you’ll pass the kitchen on your way to the panoramic window
that offers a fantastic view of Engineer Peak. In the fall, the hearth fireplace might be roaring, but on this summery day, the open windows allowed a cool breeze to run through the restaurant. Thanks to the 8,000’ elevation of the lake, the weather was more than a few degrees cooler than when we left Durango. We welcomed the change, but keep in mind that there is no heat and air conditioning here (historic building and all), so plan accordingly and bring an extra layer just in case. A few other things you should know before you go: • It’s cash or check only; no credit cards. • They’re only open for a few months, on Thursday to Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m., so jump in while you can. • You can’t get through the Electra Sporting Club entry gate without a reservation, so make one. • Said reservation should be made at least a day in advance, but you’ll really want to plan ahead because the dining room fills up quickly. • It’s BYOB, so bring a portable cocktail bar, a growler of your favorite brew, or as many wines as you think you can

drink (ahem, I’m just assuming no one’s drinking and driving, of course). Also, you should come hungry, because the menu changes almost every day and everything on it is delicious. Owners Dave and Jenn Stewart were chefs at Seasons of Durango for years before opening up shop at Electra Lake in 2017. The menu reflects their commitment to sourcing local and making from-scratch food. The beef comes from James Ranch, and most of the produce on this week’s menu came from Twin Buttes in Durango, Mountain Roots in Mancos, and Rohwer’s Farm outside Pleasant View. All the desserts are made in house, along with many menu items like a killer Hungarian sausage, my new favorite bacon, pillowy potato gnocchi, and pretzels topped with sea salt the Stewarts brought back from Cadiz, Spain. Oh, not to mention the garlic knots, which I could have eaten all night long. We were tempted to order one of everything because it was so damn hard to decide. How do you choose between duck liver mousse and smoked trout dip? You don’t; you get them both. Is it possible to select one West Coast oyster over another? Nope, slurp ’em all down. The rabbit dish came with
gnocchi, but the pan-seared jumbo sea scallops was served with a spring pea and pancetta ragu ... so yeah, one of each, please! By the end of the meal, we were pleasantly stuffed, but not too full to debate our dessert options. It’s hard not to order Jenn’s signature banana cream pie (which, you’ll love even if you hate bananas), but there were a handful of new items on the dessert menu. The house-churned ice cream never disappoints, and the buttermilk panna cotta with Campari-rhubarb compote and the chevre cheesecake were both fan-frickin-tastic. You’ll find the Boathouse north of town, about five miles south of Purgatory Resort. Turn off of Highway 550 at Electra Lake Road and head up the dirt road for about a mile. Check in with the gatekeeper (or, enter the code given to you at the time of your reservation) and wind your way around the south end of the lake. Take a few lefts and soak in the view as you find yourself at the restaurant. Call 970-247-5180 for reservations or visit their website at theboathouseatelectra.com. —— Lindsay Mattison

“If you come between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m., we can most easily accommodate you...” That’s the response we received after contacting Sage Mobile Eatery in Pagosa Springs about stopping by to check out their food. We don’t normally warn restaurants we’re coming, but this food truck, located right off 160, across from a gas station and a couple of pot shops, is known for running out of food a couple of hours after they start serving lunch, and we wanted to be sure that our drive from Durango was going to yield food, glorious food. So, to make sure that we hit the food deadline, a friend and I made the trek out to Pagosa first thing in the morning on a Friday. You’ll be happy to know that we made it, friends, and it yielded some of the best darn brisket we’ve ever had. And that’s saying something, considering one of us is from Texas. Like the atmosphere, which is basically a food truck, a covered picnic area, and a parking lot, the menu at Sage is pretty simple. They only serve breakfast and lunch, and feature mostly comfort foods. The breakfast menu offers just
three regular dishes – the biscuit, which is a biscuit sandwich with egg, cheese, and your choice of meat; biscuits and gravy; and – of course – a breakfast burrito, which can be customized to your liking. The lunch menu is a little more extensive, with several burger options, brisket, and chicken. Neither menu is too limited, though. What Sage does make, they make really well, so those carefully curated options are clearly working for them. I went with the sliced brisket sandwich on a potato bun – a plate not normally served at breakfast time, just FYI – while my dining partner went with the more breakfast appropriate plate of biscuits and gravy. It felt a bit odd to order a brisket sandwich at 9:30 a.m., but I had zero regrets about my choice once it appeared. One bite of that sandwich and it was clear why this place sells out by 1:30 p.m. every day. They serve up some seriously killer brisket here – and that’s absolutely no exaggeration. It’s the kind of brisket that is cushioned by a thick layer of fat and has been slow smoked for so long that it falls apart well before it hits your mouth. Early morning or otherwise, I was in food heaven thanks

[eat] to that pickle-laden sandwich. So much so, in fact, that I barely noticed the perfectly seasoned fries accompanying it because I was too busy indulging in meaty, smoky heaven. My dining partner noticed them, though, and greedily used them to sop up the gravy leftover on her plate. And, speaking of that gravy, it was hardly just the brisket that had us melting into our picnic benches. The biscuits and gravy were also epic. The biscuits were thick, just like she’d hoped they’d be. They pulled apart easily with the plunge of her fork. The bread was cooked beautifully, with crispy, brown edges that complimented the heavy but soft texture of the bread. “Carbs at their finest, really,” she said. Best of all, however, was the creamy green chile gravy, she said, which gave the dish a spicy kick we never realized biscuits and gravy even needed. The gravy, with its smooth texture and powerful flavor, made this dish. If there’d been enough room in her stomach, she probably have gone back for seconds of this plate. But alas, there was no room in her stomach, nor was there room in mine. I

It’s not the most convenient drive, the one to Pagosa Springs from Durango – especially not early in the morning in the midst of bike races, slow driving tourists, and commuter traffic – but if you’re driving to Sage Mobile Eatery, we guarantee it’s worth the hassle. Just make sure you head over there early enough to snag a dish or three, because we aren’t joking. They really do sell out every single day. We’re already talking about when we can make it back over there, and how much it’ll cost us to bribe them to set aside some of that brisket for us ... just in case. Sage Mobile Eatery is located at 275 E. Pagosa Street, Pagosa Springs. For more information, visit facebook.com/pg/ sagemobileeatery or call them at 970-264-3227. ——

That green chile kick did ratchet the dish up a notch and made biscuits and gravy, which is already a fantastic dish in its most basic form, something pretty darn spectacular.

LOOKIN’ LIKE ROYALTY »» Drag queens share
their dirty beauty secrets and the evolution of their stage personas By Amanda Push DGO STAFF WRITER
O
ur room isn’t ready, so we’re totally f@!ked.” Lady Shug and her posse of queens, Deja Williams and Khloe Layla Malone, are due on stage in an hour at the San Juan Center for Independence in Farmington for the Queens Riot: A Celebration of Queer Resistance. It’s been a whirlwind of a day, with last minute trips to Albuquerque and Walmart in order to make sure everything for their show that evening is in order.
“
The hotel room, though, which should have been ready an hour ago, throws a wrench in things. To pass the time, the trio brings in containers and bags of supplies they’ll need for their show into a back room, which turns from kitchen into makeshift dressing room. After some anxious pacing, bored phone scrolling, and setting up merch tables, the crew decides to return to the hotel to see if they can start putting on their faces. History in the beauty making Baking. Contouring. Fake eyelashes. Cut crease. Ombré eyebrows. What many associate with beauty YouTube vlogs, Instagram, and the Kardashian/Jenner clan are actually makeup techniques long perfected and passed down from drag queens and drag mothers hustling in clubs. “In pop culture, the queens, they always set the
trends,” said Shug. “We’re always constantly changing the trends.” It’s taken a long time for drag to be accepted into the mainstream, but its influence has been seeping into our culture for decades. In the ’60s and ’70s, iconic drag queen Divine starred in John Waters’ films and was even the inspiration for Ursula, the sea witch in the classic 1989 Disney movie “The Little Mermaid.” Throughout the ’90s, RuPaul appeared on talk shows, released “The RuPaul Show” in 1996 then “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in 2009, and was the 1994 face of the M.A.C Viva Glam collection. In the early 2010s, videos of beauty bloggers like Jaclyn Hill and Kim Kardashian, who were showcasing makeup techniques long used by drag queens, went viral. In 2012, Kardashian famously
posted a before and after video of her contouring. Still, the beauty industry is slow to recognize those who have paved the way. “Do I feel the drag community has been given the credit it deserves for highlight, contour[ing], cut creases? No, I don’t,” Osmond Vacious, a.k.a. Vivacious, a New York-based drag queen since the ’90s club kid era, told Elle. “Why do I say that? When was the last time you saw a drag queen in a commercial for L’Oreal, CoverGirl, anyone? We’re not there.” But there’s a lot more to these performers than just pantyhose and powder. “As drag queens, we do give an element of magic and fantasy if you sit down and pay attention,” said Scarlett Ultra, a drag queen and host of Durango Pride 2019.

The painstakingly applied makeup and costumes can take hours. Scarlett, the winner of the 2017 Miss Drag Durango, has been thinking about Pride for the last six months. She’s been buying costumes and rhinestones and listening to her play list non-stop. “I have to get into a certain head space,” she said. “I have three weeks to get ready and start packing my bags. I divide everything into different baggies for different days and numbers.”
in the past. I take time on highlighter and contour and make sure everything is blended. That takes the longest to perfect. There’s a big advantage to sitting down and taking your time and listening to your music and focus on your paint. I listen to music, sing, and dance. Powder is everywhere. If you could fast forward, it’d be a puff of smoke and I’d be in drag.”
On the day of the show, Scarlett likes to take about six hours to apply paint and get into costume.
At the end of the transformation, Scarlett is a bombshell with beautifully exaggerated eyes. She’s been performing drag for 10 years, but just as everything else in the beauty and entertainment industries, the process is always changing.
“When I first started, it took about three hours. The process has really developed when it comes to detail,” she said. “I feel like I focus more on myself than I did
“I feel like I’m always learning. There’s always a different eye, lip, and face shape,” Scarlett said. “My favorite part of drag is it’s always evolving over time.”
Her least favorite part? “Tucking. There are ups and downs to tucking, but drag is painful. There have been times where it’s been so uncomfortable that after a show I’ve gotten in the car and undressed in the McDonald parking lot. But, if you give your all there’s going to be some pain. But I find rays of sunshine because it’s much more than that.” Face time Meanwhile, back at the hotel, the room is finally ready and preparations are in full swing. Each performer secures a spot in front of a mirror, Continued on Page 16

Everyone painted me.” “Remember when I first started, I was the weirdo?” said Deja. “I was the weirdo creep queen. It took me a long time to figure out who I was in drag. My highlighter was real fucking bright and it still is, but after ten years of doing drag, I’ve perfected a few things. And nothing is ever going to be perfect. We’re fucking men in women’s items. I’m not trying to be perfect. I’m just trying to be me.” Shug – a nonbinary queer who performed in Las Vegas, was featured in Vice, is having a documentary made about her, and whose awards include one of The Advocate’s 2019 Champions of Pride, the 2018 USA Today Pride representative for New Mexico, and the 2016 Miss New Mexico Pride – moved back to the Gallup, N.M. area to be closer to her people. As a Dine/Navajo person, it’s clear when she talks about her people that her heart is still very much embedded in the community. There is still rampant poverty and a lack of acceptance when it comes to indigenous LGBTQ people, she said. “Moving back to my reservation, I’ve become more in tune with my culture and with privileges and just being a voice for people who don’t have a voice or don’t feel comfortable using it,” Shug said. “My persona has been very cutting edge as far as it’s very political. It’s very in your face. Sometimes people will feel uncomfortable at the things I say or do when I perform. It’s become interesting. Shug has made me become more aware of myself in and out of drag. “I didn’t realize my people were still so oppressed in society. ... My people are still living in like a third world
country. No water and no electricity in so many parts of the reservation. ... No groceries, no healthcare for miles and miles away. “We’re a sovereign nation. We have our own government. Even that, our government doesn’t protect our trans and gay relatives. There’s no hate crime laws. There’s no law protecting us from being fired for being gay if you work for the tribe. If you’re a same-sex couple living on the reservation, your marriage is not valid. So it’s super backward, and people don’t realize that. They think, ‘Oh, equality – we have same-sex marriage everywhere. No, no we don’t. So it gets kind of depressing talking about it, but it’s true. Lately, I’ve gotten my voice and I haven’t been silent for a while. I’m calling these officials out, like our president. Wake up. We’re here. Do something. Something should have happened many, many years ago.”

The show must go on After about an hour of hurried brush strokes and putting on bodies, it’s time to go. They’ll have to finish anything else in the venue dressing room. On the way there, Shug runs through the schedule, rearranging this and that while going over everything with Deja and Khloe. After parking and dragging in the rest of their necessities and exchanging pleasantries with the other performers, Shug slips into a long, sleek dress, heels, and earrings before hurrying off to the stage. “Oh myyyyyy,” said Shug to a roar of applause and excited shrieks. “What’s going on, Farmington!” The show has begun.

Newt Bros Truffles partially cured my fear of edibles I do not have the best relationship with edibles. It’s not their fault, mind you – it’s mine. I’m terrified that I’ll eat an edible and end up with my arms becoming useless floppy noodles that won’t even grab a cupcake to satiate the munchies. It’s happened before, clearly. Given that I become a numb-limbed Gumby-human when I take edibles, I’ve steered away from most of them as of late. So, needless to say, I was a little nervous when Prohibition asked us to review Newt Brothers Truffles. You may recognize the Newt Bros name from their concentrates – that’s the main realm these pot pros deal in – but they recently branched out into truffles. I have liked all the other Newt Bros products I’ve tried, so I wanted to have high hopes for them – I did – but I was fricking scared. Edibles have scarred me.

Cheese Train Haze, a frigging fun sativa that smells like feet Have you ever smoked a bowl with a friend and looked over at them and noticed that they had that look on their face, the one where it’s like, “I’m stooooooooooooned,” and their entire face seems to be melting? And then you feel your own face melt, probably in part because seeing their melting face set you off? Yeah, that happened to us this week, and surprisingly, it was because of a sativa. Cheese Train Haze, to be exact. We procured this stinky cheese man strain from The Green House in Pagosa Springs for this review, and were warned prior about nothing but the stench. And yes, there was indeed a stench when I popped open the lid on this bad boy. This strain, which is misleadingly pretty with light green frosty nugs, smells like moldy cheese or (gross) musty feet. It tastes like it smells, by the way. But, as we all know, the mustier or skunkier the bud, the more interesting shit’s going to get. (We don’t know that. I clearly just made that up to segue into the next graf.) And, things did get super freaking interesting. If there was ever a time we’ve all sat around and ticked the boxes of every single stoner trope, it was the day we smoked Cheese Train Haze. Things started off pretty chill – a couple of bowls in and we put the pipe down – but they didn’t stay chill. This bud is a creeper if there ever was one. One minute we were high but chill, and the next minute were in giggle bitch territory with no warning. Everything was funny and no one could function to take care of simple tasks. Need evidence? Here goes. One of our friends – the one who always manages to become a less-functioning Hyde from “That ’70s Show” – kept going off on some weird ass mumbling tangents. She was definitely trying to say something, but it was clear the words wouldn’t form, so she just kept trailing off onto words that didn’t exactly fit together well, which in turn made the rest of us laugh hysterically. A few minutes later, we were all amused watching her attempt to comment on a Facebook post and failing epically. No idea what she was trying to comment on, by the way. It’s probably best that her fingers wouldn’t work.

And at one point, it sounded to me like the birds in the trees were part of the Drake song playing on an outdoor speaker, so I kept looking around trying to figure out if Drake sampled freaking birds for his song or if there were birds chirping. The person who’d been mumbling nonsense also heard it. She snapped to attention and yelled, “That bird is effing loud! Shut the hell up, sir!” That set me off into another bout of laughter because who calls a bird “sir?” So proper! Anyway, yeah. We’re all idiots and might as well have been reenacting a scene from “Dude, Where’s My Car” or something. And theeeeeeeeen? Let this serve as a lesson to you. Smoke some Cheese Train Haze because it’s frigging fun, but don’t do it on a day you need to be productive. And don’t listen to Drake after you’ve smoked it, either, cause hearing birds on a Champagne Papi track is too trippy for words. —— DGO Pufnstuf

[love and sex]
Love is a rainbow »» It’s time to pull out the rainbow flags and celebrate 10 years of Durango Pride This year is the 10th anniversary of the Durango Pride March! Happy Pride!
scribe someone whose gender identity matches their assigned sex at birth.
The purpose of having an entire month dedicated to LGBTQ+ people is to raise awareness about the murders of transgender women of color; that as recent as 2015, 58% of Colorado youth felt unsafe at school based on their sexual orientation, according to data from the 2015 National School Climate Survey conducted by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), and this year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the start of establishing civil rights for LGBTQ+ people.
Sexual orientation is who we are attracted to including sexual, emotional, and spiritual attraction. Relationships do not have to be only defined by who we get naked with. Gender expression is how a person presents physically to the world. This may be a consistent presentation or may change from day to day, week to week, and so on. Gender expression may be closely linked to a person’s sex and gender, or just their gender. Gender pronouns are words used to assign gender in language – it’s her birthday. They like to bike. We saw him in the park. Gender is on a spectrum rather than binary and in order to respect that spectrum, folks are identifying and using pronouns that best represent their gender identity. The use of gender neutral pronouns, like they/them/theirs, is a way to bring inclusivity and equality to language.
Some questions I hear most from people are what does LGBT, etc mean? What is an ally? How do gay people have sex? What is cisgender? Why do you have she/her/hers next to your name? Let the Learning Begin All right, class. Come to order. Today we are going to learn more about the LGBTQQIAAP community. I am going to ask that we put away our judgments, biases, and participate in the space with an open mind. LGBTQQIAAP is an acronym of labels created by people in the community. Labels like LGBTQ+ offer self-clarification, ownership, self-empowerment, connections within communities, opportunities for identifying supporters, and a way to reclaim terms that are used as slurs. It is important to remember that individuals may choose to use a different label and everyone needs to respect their choice. Many of you know what LGBT stands for but a surprising number don’t, so let’s all get on the same page. L: Lesbian – A woman who is attracted to other women. G: Gay – A man who is attracted to other men. Also, can be used as an umbrella term for the community or by individuals regardless of sex or gender to define their sexual orientation. B: Bisexual – A woman or man who is attracted to either women or men. T: Transgender – A woman or man who has transitioned to the opposite gender from their assigned sex at birth, who is attracted to either women or men.
To learn more I encourage you to attend a Transgender 101 class taught by Adrien from The Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, which is a robust and much more detailed discussion on the topic of gender. They regularly provide training in this area and you can host a training for your group of friends or your business by visiting www.tgrcnm.org/training and A: Ally – A person outside of a specific group, that supsubmitting a request. ports people within a marginalized group, e.g. straight allies to the LGBTQ+ community or gay allies to the transgender Finally, how do gay people have sex? The best tool I’ve come across as an educator is the Genderbread Person created by Sam Killerman.
Sex is what is between your legs – your genitals. This is typically assigned at birth by a medical professional, who puts it on your birth certificate. Intersex is included here. Fly your flag Remembering Stonewall Pride has clearly grown to embrace more than just its roots, but it’s important to remember those anyway, because the celebration actually started as a commemoration of the Stonewall Inn riots. You see, back in 1969 when Stonewall occurred, it was freaking illegal for LGBTQ+ people to meet in public places. Gay bars were under scrutiny and often raided by the cops, which is precisely what happened at Stonewall. This time, though, the community fought back and led the nation on a journey to acceptance – one that we still need to work on. Trans Pride Did you know that there’s a Pride celebration specifically for trans people? Well, there is. Cities like Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle all hold their special transgender Pride events for those in the trans and gender non-conforming community. The reasoning behind the second Pride is to help shine a spotlight on the trans community, a group that is all too often left out of the LGBTQ+ narrative. Presidential faux pas Only two U.S. presidents have bothered to acknowledge Pride month: Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill

Clinton. (Don’t hold your breath on Trump doing so, considering he’s banned the gay flag from being flown at embassies.) While he was in office, President Obama issued a special proclamation declaring June a month to celebrate LGBT Pride, and made a statement reminding Americans that there is still further work to be done. Someone please explain that to the current prez. Color us surprised Every color of the gay pride flag stands for something, which is pretty darn rad. Hot pink represents sexuality. Red represents life. Orange represents healing. Yellow represents sunlight. Green represents nature. Turquoise represents magic and art. Indigo represents serenity and harmony. Violet represents spirit. And the whole thing together? Well, to us, it represents love.
