For nearly two decades, Four Corners Expos has hosted a variety of familyfriendly, community events, including the Two Hearts Wedding Experience, Durango Regional Job Fair and Durango Home & Ranch Show. To prepare for shows of this size, it takes both a mastermind and many months of planning. Fortunately, Four Corners Expos is excited to welcome Georgiana Hallock to the team as Four Corners Expos Coordinator. In her new role, Hallock will create community events that help businesses connect directly with customers. She is excited to bring her previous experiences organizing large events, such as horse shows, nonprofit fundraisers, team-building experiences and weddings, to Four Corners Expos events. And Hallock said she is looking forward to coordinating expos in the Four Corners region. Always donning a smile, Hallock is an active listener with an outgoing [6]

[Energy Efficiency]
7 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS
T
he decision to replace windows often comes down to aesthetics and necessity. Drafty windows can reduce energy efficiency, and raise costs. Here are seven factors to consider before replacing windows.
1. Vinyl or aluminum may be best. Lumber is farmed rather
quickly today and solid wood products may not stand up to elements as well as wood used a half-century ago. To avoid rot, vinyl windows often are an affordable and durable choice. Homeowners also have the option of wood windows with aluminum cladding, which are long-lasting.
2. Moisture problems indicate windows need to be replaced. Condensation that shows
[ 10 ]
up as fogging between double-pane windows or on the inside of windows indicates that the seals are starting to fail. If installing a vapor barrier in the basement or crawl space, ventilating properly when showering or cooking, or using a dehumidifier indoors does not remedy the situation, it might be time to replace the windows.
3. Windows add curb appeal. Beyond functionality, replacement windows immediately update the look of the home and can improve curb appeal since they are one of the most prominent features on the exterior of a home. If a house needs an update, replacing windows can be a quick and affordable update.
4. Consider other energyefficient upgrades. Sometimes older windows can be salvaged,
2022 DURANGO HOME & RANCH SHOW
especially if they are not damaged. Replacing panes, sash cords and weather stripping may be less expensive than replacing a window. Older homes with attractive windows complement one another.
5. The wrong windows can adversely affect home value. The National Association of
Realtors says homeowners get about 73% of their replacement window investment back when they resell a home. But choosing the wrong windows might lower the value of the home. It’s important to match the look of the original windows, including window material and the number of panes in each window with the original windows.
6. Think about soundproofing. When
upgrading windows, also think about how certain windows can cancel out noises and make homes more soundproof. Some windows can help reduce outdoor distractions like leaf blowers or lawn mowers.
7. Proper installation is key. Replacement windows are
only as good as their installation in many cases. Poor installation and orders of standard rather than custom sized windows could result in poor fitting and seals. Homeowners should carefully vet and review window replacement contractors to find the best professionals for the job.

HANDCRAFTED HEIRLOOMS
H
usband and wife, Lisa and Loren Skyhorse, create incredible custom leatherworks. Together, the duo handcraft award-winning artwork as Skyhorse Saddles. Lisa and Loren started building saddles together in 1976. They share a love of horses, not only with each other, but also with their customers. With over four decades of professional experience, each design by Skyhorse Saddles is a longlasting, one-ofa-kind heirloom customers can give to their own children. “The great thing about leather is it is so functional,” Lisa said. “If it can be made out of leather, we do it. I think the really special part is that every single one is a one-of-a-kind piece, and most of the time we are working with customers so that we are building them exactly what they want.” Though the couple began working with saddles, over the years, they expanded services to provide clients with other [ 14 ]
accessories upon request, including belts, furniture and other leather art. They often engrave detailed portraits or business logos into leather products for clients, too. Lisa specializes in carving those intricate designs into leather, often highlighting them with high-quality color, finishes or embellishments, while Loren forms the base (or tree) of saddles and does most of the stitching. His signature silver and leather braiding techniques are remarkable. To source allnatural, highquality leather, the couple works with a historic tannery located in St. Louis, Missouri. And since their artwork is renowned, some pieces handcrafted by the duo are on display at art galleries and museums. As the featured artist at this year’s Home & Ranch Show, Skyhorse Saddles will showcase some of their latest works at the event. Stop by their booth to say hello and observe their incredible talent.

[Safety]
BE PREPARED FOR HOME EMERGENCIES
H
ousehold emergencies can occur at any time. Fortunately it’s easy to prevent or reduce a wide range of household dangers by embracing simple safety measures.
· Accidental falls: Roughly
three million adults age 65 and older experience falls that result in emergency room visits each year in the United States. Falls can be prevented by removing tripping hazards, installing steady handrails and other supports. Installing adequate lighting around a home is also helpful.
· Burst pipes: Burst pipes or
leaking plumbing can quickly cause major damage in a home. Dwell Residential Group says to locate the water main, which is usually in the basement or garage on the “street side” near the water meter. Turn off the main to save the home and your wallet. Make the water main visible, mark which way is off, and instruct others in the house on how to use it.
· Tipping furniture: Tip-over
incidents send thousands of people, especially young children, to emergency rooms each year.
[ 16 ]
Top-heavy pieces of furniture, like dressers, TV stands and televisions, bureaus and bookcases should be anchored to the wall.
· Kitchen fires: The potential
for danger of fire exists whenever cooking with heat or over open flames. Kitchen fires may occur, but they don’t have to spread or cause serious issues if fast action is taken. Never use water to put out a grease fire - it will only spread it and make it worse. Cover the fire with a lid to suffocate the flames, or use baking soda to douse the fire. Always have an all-purpose fire extinguisher on hand, and know how to operate it.
· Fire or other danger: No
one ever thinks an emergency situation necessitating escape from the home will take place. But to play it safe, residents should designate emergency exits that are the quickest and safest ways out of every room in the house. Practice this plan and pick a meeting spot outside.
Safety at home involves knowing how to act fast in an emergency and how to reduce your risk of being in potentially dangerous situations.

PAINT OFFERS A SPECIAL POP OF PERSONALITY
C
olor is part of every design. Bold colors can be used to create a stunning accent wall, while homes with open concepts often use color to define rooms. People who have painted home interiors in the past recognize the process of picking paint can be complicated. Paint retailers have a seemingly endless swatch of colors to choose from, and it can be difficult to narrow down similar options. However, these tips can help homeowners pick the perfect paint.
• Take stock, and photographs, of your current furnishings. Designers rely on a simple technique when recommending color schemes for clients. Choose a standout color from existing furnishings, such as the dominant color from framed artwork, a decorative pillow or piece of furniture, and then look for the same shade to paint the walls. A photograph of the item can be handy when visiting the paint store.
• Lighten colors as you go up. The home renovation and design experts at HGTV recommend picking
[ 18 ]
darker color values for the floor, medium color values for the walls and light values for the ceiling. This approach mimics the look of the great outdoors, where the ground tends to be darker than the trees, and the trees are darker than the blue sky.
• Use paint to create a vibe. The home renovation experts note that colors evoke an emotional response. Cool colors like blue and green give off a relaxing vibe, which makes them ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms. Red is an intense color that can up the energy ante in any room, which can make it an option for homeowners who want to spark debate around their dinner tables.
• Give personal preference its place at the table. Though interior designers may have years of experience picking paint colors and researchers may have determined how certain colors can be utilized to create a desired ambiance in a given room, ultimately homeowners are the ones who will be living there. So it’s important that homeowners pick colors they like.
2022 DURANGO HOME & RANCH SHOW
at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deep shades like navy or brown.
•
Paint is an inexpensive way to transform a room. Rely on a combination of color strategies and personal preferences to choose paint color for interior walls.
2022 Color Trends Home design trends come and go. Paint provides one way to refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, but these colors are already making the rounds in 2022.
• Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The design pros
Evergreen Fog:
The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for homeowners who are looking to create relaxing spaces.
• Breezeway: Breezeway from
Behr is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black and nuanced pink.
• Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from
Valspar is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone makes it suitable in a variety of rooms, so it’s so popular in homes with open floor plans.

BUILD A CONTAINER GARDEN
B
looming backyard gardens are a long-standing tradition, usually created after clearing a plot of land, tilling and amending the soil, then planting rows of crops. But, growing a garden can be more successful when considering the benefits of containers. There are several advantages and disadvantages to starting a garden using containers, such as 5-gallon buckets, pots, planters or raised garden beds.
Pros
One advantage of container gardening is that plants can be moved to ensure the right growing conditions. Gardeners may also be more able to control soil conditions inside of a container. Pots and boxes also can be grouped together to create eyepopping displays.
Cons
Creating ideal growing conditions can be tricky. Drainage is an important factor in container gardening. If water cannot escape the soil, the roots of the
[ 20 ]
plants can rot and die. It’s not enough to add stones or gravel to the bottom of containers. Drill additional holes in the bottom. Frequently check on soil moisture and adjust watering schedule.
Plan for plants that play well
Grouping plants together can create visually stunning combinations. However, it is important to choose plants that require the same amount of light and moisture. Look at plant tags when visiting the garden center and select complementary plants, or ask a store employee. Mixing different plant shapes, colors and leaf textures, as well as plants of various heights, can help containers look more full and appealing.
Feed plants accordingly
Plants need nutrition. Quality potting mixes will contain fertilizers, but nutrition can wane over time. Add fresh potting mix or granular fertilizer every couple of weeks. Alternatively, consider using a slow-release fertilizer or worm castings several times during the season.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN MORE SUCCESSFUL
W
hile growing a vegetable or flower garden can turn into a rewarding hobby, gardening also can be overwhelming — particularly when the results are less than stellar. These tips can make your garden much more successful.
1. Start small.
It is best to start small and build on what you find successful, which includes plants that thrive in your lawn and garden. This also is beneficial if you are unsure of vegetable yields.
2. Assess the soil.
Nourish soil with organic matter, such as manure, compost, shredded leaves and natural mulch. Add this organic matter in the offseason to give it enough time to be incorporated into the ground before spring. Test soil for pH and other characteristics that make it friendly or averse to plants at a local garden center.
3. Arm yourself with more plant knowledge.
Read the packaging and do research so plants have the best chance of not only sprouting, but also surviving. Many people prefer to
start seedlings indoors and then transfer those plants outdoors when they are more established.
4. Sit in your yard and observe the sun.
Watch the way the sunlight dances over your landscape. Take note of which areas get the most sun and shade. This will help you plan what to plant and where to plant it. Vegetable gardens tend to need ample sunlight to bear plenty of pick-worthy produce.
5. Choose hardy varieties.
Certain plants have been bred to thrive in our climate. Consult with a local gardening center to figure out which plants will do best in your garden at home.
6. Use rainwater.
Rainwater contains fewer contaminants and additives than tap water, which can benefit garden plants. Collect rainwater in rain barrels and use irrigation systems to deliver it to the garden.
Home gardens can yield many gifts, from flowers to fruit. Give plants a fighting chance by growing them in optimal conditions.
