to the 17th Annual Durango Home & Ranch Show This year’s show really ROCKS, and in more ways than one! With more than 110 vendors, there is something for everybody and something for every home. You’ll find plenty of ideas to get your spring spruce-up going. Our featured artist, woodworker Doug Hunderman, creates custom rocking chairs, and his beautiful “Mountain Rocker” is the image for this year’s show poster. Visit Doug in Booth 106 and try one out for yourself! Alpine Lumber and iLevel Trus Joist Products is our show co-sponsor, with displays in the Exhibit Hall and outdoor lot. If a new deck is in your future, be sure to check out those booths. You’ll also see dogs from the La Plata County Humane Society walking around, hoping to be adopted. Their booth is in the outdoor lot. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado will have a live auction on Sunday for a playhouse and several doghouses built by local high school students. In addition, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is also holding an auction for a package for two to Hawaii. The package includes airfare and lodging at your choice of one of three Wyndham resorts. These fundraisers are helping kids and dogs – who doesn’t love that? Our gate proceeds benefit the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado, and you can be sure your $2 donation is helping local people and making Durango a better place. Norton’s Catering will serve delicious breakfast and lunch fare both days of the show in the dining area of the Exhibit Hall, and also in the Extension Building. Doug Hunderman thinks everyone deserves a rocking chair. “Our lives are so unbalanced, and very few of us slow down enough to rest. But sitting in a rocker, which floats like the wind under you, looking out into nature – that feeds your soul, not just your body,” he said in a Durango Herald interview in 2005. Hunderman is a woodworker and owner of Durango Rockers, a business he started in 2002. His three signature rockers – Mountain Rocker, Wind Rocker and Spirit Rocker – will be on display at the show. The curvy lines and rich colors invite the sitter to plop down, sink in and de-stress. Hunderman, who is also a professional counselor with his business Dawn Treader Counseling, says he has to remind himself to follow his own advice when it comes to resting in a rocker. “Slowing down has been an issue in my life, with the typical negative consequences,” he said. “I usually don’t work well. I work less efficiently. We have to learn how to work less and do more. I recommend people sit and rock – not facing a monitor.”
About the Artist
Hunderman’s early interest in wood began working alongside his dad as a child and fixing things around the house. He said he always admired quality woodworking, and years ago he told himself he would simply learn how to do it himself. Today, he tells people if it’s wood, he can do it. He creates tables, beds, dressers and more. He even built his own timber-framed, woodpegged house. He spends long hours outdoors with a grinder or hand rasp to make the rockers, wearing a full respirator and covered head to toe in dust. But it’s a labor of love. “A nice counterbalance to working with people is working with wood,” he said. “There’s not a lot of politics or backstabbing or complaining. ” The rockers have distinct personalities, and Hunderman can design a special chair to fit the individual. The Mountain Rocker is more of sculpted chair, he said, and the Wind Rocker and Spirit Rockers are more precise, with classical woodworking techniques. Fire Ready The recent Lightner Creek fire that threatened homes in the forest is a timely reminder about the danger of wildfires. “Sometimes people call during a fire when it’s too late to do the work of defensible space (thinning overgrown vegetation around a home),” said Dan MacVeigh, owner of Fire Ready. “Don’t wait until the next fire starts: Please call now. Jill Creates Interior Design Jill Creates. She does, indeed… A slab of barn wood reimagined to become a handsome tabletop or sitting bench. An old wheel rim repurposed into a beautiful decorative mirror. These are just a few of the things that you might find in the beautiful homes of clients whose homes have been reinvented by the interior design and décor-building talent of Jill Lupton, owner of Jill Creates. Jill Creates is the newest creative venture for Jill and Kelly Lupton, a company that specializes in interior design, unique décor for home and office and custom window treatments from top brands like Hunter Douglas and Skandia. Serving Southwest Colorado The Community Foundation makes a difference in five counties through philanthropic leadership, nonprofit support, education and initiatives. Through the presence and influence of the Community Foundation, there is a strong, active link between philanthropy and need, resulting in a cohesive and productive nonprofit community. The Foundation administers an enormous range of grants, touching all segments of our community; such as Adaptive Sports, American Red Cross, Dove Creek Students Against Drunk Driving, Cadence Equine Therapy, Cowboy Gathering, and the Durango After Prom Party. Your Community Foundation also fills an essential role as a nonprofit umbrella for agencies such as the Durango Friends of the Arts; which provides resources to the arts and nonprofits, and the Women’s Health Coalition; which provides cancer treatment support. The Foundation has almost $2,000,000 in over 70 funds earmarked for local needs. A record $132,000 was granted through these funds in 2010, including: • Donor advised funds: A charitable giving fund that has a community focus, stewardship opportunities, accountability and affordability for donors. • Fiscal sponsorships: A relationship providing a group with the benefits of tax-exempt status, mentoring, nonprofit expertise and marketing support. • Organization funds: A long-term fund held and managed on behalf of a nonprofit. Donors receive assurance their money will be managed into perpetuity. • Scholarship funds: Individuals, groups and businesses create scholarship funds to support education and community enhancement. La Plata County Humane Society Some furry friends will be strolling around the booths at the show this year. La Plata County Humane Society volunteers will let mutts strut their stuff in the hopes of being adopted. Watch for these dogs in their “adopt me” jackets, and take a minute to meet and greet them. The La Plata County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization created to enhance the quality of life in our community by encouraging the humane treatment of animals. LPHS was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. LPHS is always looking for help, and volunteering is wonderful work for people who love animals but can’t adopt a pet of their own. There are many volunteer opportunities, such as: walking dogs, playing with cats, grooming and bathing, retail, administrative assistance, Mutts in the Mountains (hiking), doggy outings, helping with advertising (photography and videos), fostering and more. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado Why should you attend the 2011 Durango Home & Ranch Show? How about a chance to win a trip for two to Hawaii, including round-trip airfare and lodging? The local nonprofit organization Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado is offering an exciting fundraising auction of several items at the event. The trip to Hawaii is one package for two people with round-trip airfare from Durango to the Hawaiian Islands and lodging at a Wyndham resort at either the Big Island, Kauai or Oahu. (The airfare is for economy class and must be booked through Wyndham or its designated agent at least 60 days in advance. Additional travel and lodging restrictions, including block-out dates for major holidays, may apply.) This package has been generously donated by Steve Thull, Senior Vice President of Wyndham Vacation Ownership. At the show booth, you’ll also see some amazing mini-structures for auction – all built by students at Durango High School. There will be one two-story playhouse that could double as an attractive storage space; five dog houses of various sizes; and one dog quilt. The auction will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, at the event – don’t miss it! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado’s vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities for all. Their mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact.
