Welcome

to the 17th Annual Durango Home & Ranch Show This year’s show really ROCKS, and in more ways than one! With more than 110 vendors, there is something for everybody and something for every home. You’ll find plenty of ideas to get your spring spruce-up going. Our featured artist, woodworker Doug Hunderman, creates custom rocking chairs, and his beautiful “Mountain Rocker” is the image for this year’s show poster. Visit Doug in Booth 106 and try one out for yourself! Alpine Lumber and iLevel Trus Joist Products is our show co-sponsor, with displays in the Exhibit Hall and outdoor lot. If a new deck is in your future, be sure to check out those booths. You’ll also see dogs from the La Plata County Humane Society walking around, hoping to be adopted. Their booth is in the outdoor lot. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado will have a live auction on Sunday for a playhouse and several doghouses built by local high school students. In addition, Big Brothers/Big Sisters is also holding an auction for a package for two to Hawaii. The package includes airfare and lodging at your choice of one of three Wyndham resorts. These fundraisers are helping kids and dogs – who doesn’t love that? Our gate proceeds benefit the Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado, and you can be sure your $2 donation is helping local people and making Durango a better place. Norton’s Catering will serve delicious breakfast and lunch fare both days of the show in the dining area of the Exhibit Hall, and also in the Extension Building. So grab a snack – you need your strength to shop! Enjoy the show.

Doug Hunderman thinks everyone deserves a rocking chair. “Our lives are so unbalanced, and very few of us slow down enough to rest. But sitting in a rocker, which floats like the wind under you, looking out into nature – that feeds your soul, not just your body,” he said in a Durango Herald interview in 2005. Hunderman is a woodworker and owner of Durango Rockers, a business he started in 2002. His three signature rockers – Mountain Rocker, Wind Rocker and Spirit Rocker – will be on display at the show. The curvy lines and rich colors invite the sitter to plop down, sink in and de-stress. Hunderman, who is also a professional counselor with his business Dawn Treader Counseling, says he has to remind himself to follow his own advice when it comes to resting in a rocker. “Slowing down has been an issue in my life, with the typical negative consequences,” he said. “I usually don’t work well. I work less efficiently. We have to learn how to work less and do more. I recommend people sit and rock – not facing a monitor.”

About the Artist

Hunderman’s early interest in wood began working alongside his dad as a child and fixing things around the house. He said he always admired quality woodworking, and years ago he told himself he would simply learn how to do it himself. Today, he tells people if it’s wood, he can do it. He creates tables, beds, dressers and more. He even built his own timber-framed, woodpegged house. He spends long hours outdoors with a grinder or hand rasp to make the rockers, wearing a full respirator and covered head to toe in dust. But it’s a labor of love. “A nice counterbalance to working with people is working with wood,” he said. “There’s not a lot of politics or backstabbing or complaining. ” The rockers have distinct personalities, and Hunderman can design a special chair to fit the individual. The Mountain Rocker is more of sculpted chair, he said, and the Wind Rocker and Spirit Rockers are more precise, with classical woodworking techniques. One of his rockers is on display this month at Azul Gallery in Durango. Hunderman invites you to sit and rest at Booth 106 during the show. 4 • April 24, 2011 • Durango Home and Ranch Show

Fire Ready The recent Lightner Creek fire that threatened homes in the forest is a timely reminder about the danger of wildfires. “Sometimes people call during a fire when it’s too late to do the work of defensible space (thinning overgrown vegetation around a home),” said Dan MacVeigh, owner of Fire Ready. “Don’t wait until the next fire starts: Please call now. There’s plenty of work to do out there, it just has to happen in advance.” MacVeigh said the last couple of winters have had good snowfall, so people haven’t been thinking about fire. However, the underbrush has still been growing, and dry, windy conditions are always a risk factor in our region. The Fire Ready booth at the show will offer free DVDs that explain defensible space, and materials will be on hand to educate people and explain the company’s techniques. Fire Ready offers wildfire prevention services that include: defensible space consulting and contracting, tree thinning and limbing, hazard tree and brush removal and large-capacity chipping. With a holistic approach to forestry and tree care, Fire Ready is often the best choice for pre-construction site clearing, insect and disease Before prevention, hazard tree removals, tree planting and pruning, and general forest cleanup to create appealing landscapes. Trees and plants need special consideration when working outside of urban environments. This year is Fire Ready’s 10-year anniversary. The company has built its reputation on meeting residential-forest needs with an ecological and aesthetic approach. Whether you have a single tree or an entire forest that needs attention, Fire Ready is there to help. For more information, visit Booth 137 or www.fireready.com. After

Jill Creates Interior Design Jill Creates. She does, indeed… A slab of barn wood reimagined to become a handsome tabletop or sitting bench. An old wheel rim repurposed into a beautiful decorative mirror. These are just a few of the things that you might find in the beautiful homes of clients whose homes have been reinvented by the interior design and décor-building talent of Jill Lupton, owner of Jill Creates. Jill Creates is the newest creative venture for Jill and Kelly Lupton, a company that specializes in interior design, unique décor for home and office and custom window treatments from top brands like Hunter Douglas and Skandia. Jill moved to Durango in 2007, beginning a new life with her husband, Kelly Lupton, former owner of Quality House Interiors. She is not new, however, to the world of interior design and window coverings. Jill owned and ran a successful design and window covering business in Greeley and prior to that in Wyoming. “It was the fact that I was on a limited budget, but wanted a beautiful home with beautiful things that inspired my passion for home decorating,” she said. As for her design style, one might call it “rustic and vintage meets shabby chic.” Her knack for blending classic, vintage and eclectic elements defines her signature look, but no two homes she has decorated look the same. Her frugal nature and creative eye for repurposing old items into unique design pieces gives the homes Jill transforms a timeless and elegant simplicity, peppered with a dash of fun and creative embellishments. If you ask Jill what she enjoys most about what she does, her answer is simple: “My passion is for creating beautiful, unique homes that people love to come home to. That’s what I do, and I have a blast doing it – life is just too short to not enjoy where you live.” Very well put, indeed. For more information, contact Jill Lupton at (970) 764-8529, or visit www.jillcreates.com.

The Original Wonder Pot The Original Wonder Pot™ is a new line of high performance, fabric, agricultural growing containers, designed to provide an optimal environment for healthy plant cultivation. Available in a variety of sizes, Wonder Pots have arrived just as gardening is making a comeback as one of America’s top pastimes. The pots work well in all applications, including indoor and outdoor, soil or hydro. A tough economy and the “eat local” movement have motivated people to grow their own food. Urban gardeners have vegetables in small rooftop spaces and window boxes. Suburbanites are gardening in backyard patio pots and raised beds. Seniors are discovering the health and therapeutic benefits of dabbling in the soil. Our Wonder Pots meet all their needs. Wonder Pots are better than traditional clay, ceramic or plastic containers because they keep plants healthier. They’re lightweight, made of a non-biodegradable, non-water-absorbent, reflective fabric that keeps plant roots cooler than other pots. The fabric is breathable, as well as mold and mildew resistant, creating an envelope of aerated, sterile soil around the plants. Wonder Pots are the invention of Travis Willis, who grew his first tomato at age five, and has been hooked on gardening ever since. “I’m proud of the way Wonder Pots help plants thrive. They create instant vessels for all kinds of urban and country gardening, from raised beds and terraces to flower and vegetable beds. The Wonder Pot is the only fabric pot designed for long-term planting. It’s also versatile, and can go directly in the ground to contain fast-spreading mint or bamboo, or be easily moved around a deck or yard,” Willis said. For more information about The Original Wonder Pot visit Booth 87 or www.thewonderpot.com.

La Plata County Humane Society Some furry friends will be strolling around the booths at the show this year. La Plata County Humane Society volunteers will let mutts strut their stuff in the hopes of being adopted. Watch for these dogs in their “adopt me” jackets, and take a minute to meet and greet them. The La Plata County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization created to enhance the quality of life in our community by encouraging the humane treatment of animals. LPHS was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. LPHS is always looking for help, and volunteering is wonderful work for people who love animals but can’t adopt a pet of their own. There are many volunteer opportunities, such as: walking dogs, playing with cats, grooming and bathing, retail, administrative assistance, Mutts in the Mountains (hiking), doggy outings, helping with advertising (photography and videos), fostering and more. For more information, visit Booth 135 or www.lpchumanesociety.org.

Spring is upon us, and that means babies. At LPHS, there are new litters of kittens and puppies. They won’t be at the show, but they will be at the shelter, waiting to be adopted.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado Why should you attend the 2011 Durango Home & Ranch Show? How about a chance to win a trip for two to Hawaii, including round-trip airfare and lodging? The local nonprofit organization Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado is offering an exciting fundraising auction of several items at the event. The trip to Hawaii is one package for two people with round-trip airfare from Durango to the Hawaiian Islands and lodging at a Wyndham resort at either the Big Island, Kauai or Oahu. (The airfare is for economy class and must be booked through Wyndham or its designated agent at least 60 days in advance. Additional travel and lodging restrictions, including block-out dates for major holidays, may apply.) This package has been generously donated by Steve Thull, Senior Vice President of Wyndham Vacation Ownership. At the show booth, you’ll also see some amazing mini-structures for auction – all built by students at Durango High School. There will be one two-story playhouse that could double as an attractive storage space; five dog houses of various sizes; and one dog quilt. The auction will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, at the event – don’t miss it! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado’s vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities for all. Their mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children with the friendship of an adult that will grow for many years. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national and international movement that began in 1902 with the first Big Sisters agency. In 1946 the first National Big Brothers agency began, and 31 years later the two organizations merged to form the first Big Brothers Big Sisters of America agency. There are currently over 507 national agencies as well as international programs. For more information, visit: http://www.bbig.org/bbbs/site/homesave.htm. Visit Booth 124 or 136 to find out more about the auction.

These are Durango High School students’ design work that shows what the finished playhouse will look like.
