For the 16th year, the nonprofit focused on supporting independent, local businesses organized the event known as Noel Night – a celebration filled with live entertainment, incredible sales and holiday cheer. But don’t let the name fool you. Durango’s Christmas Party begins at 10 a.m. Shoppers can spend a few hours downtown or make a day of browsing almost 100 independent establishments offering deals, drawings and more. Along with fun holiday crafts, this guide to Noel Night includes parking and transportation
information, and a full line-up of events and entertainment organized by Local First. For gift-givers, we have helpful hints to find local gifts for all kinds of lifestyles and hobbies. Holiday Decorations Handmade gifts, trinkets and treats make the giving season special. But making memories is what the holiday season is about. Try creating tree ornaments and decorations for a fun winter tradition. lMini sleighs: Create miniature replicas of Santa’s sleigh. Paint wooden craft sticks to form the main body of the sleigh and glue them together. Put one at the top perpendicular to the others to serve as the steering rudder. Two silver-painted sticks placed on their thin sides can look like the blades of a sled. l Popcorn garland: Garland made of popcorn is a classic handmade holiday project. For a fun twist and extra color on tree, toss the popcorn with food coloring and allow it to dry before stringing.
l Photo ornaments: Print out several different photos that you love. Purchase round or square thin wood pieces from a craft store and attach the photos with Mod Podge. When dry, drill a hole through the top and thread with twine. l Wooden snowflakes: Collect small twigs from outdoors, as well as leaves and some sprigs of evergreen. Arrange similarly sized twigs in the shape of snowflakes and glue together, or tie with twine. Embellish with glitter, dried berries and more.

l Dough ornaments: Anyone can have fun molding their own ornaments, letting them dry and then painting them. Use cookie cutters to get perfect holiday shapes. Craft stores sell various types of modeling clays and lightweight modeling materials. Or, make your own salt dough with 1 cup of flour, half a cup of salt and half a cup of water. l Sweet sentiments: Use old Scrabble letter tiles to form a favorite holiday phrase, like “Joy to the World.” Glue the tiles together and hang from the tree on a piece of ribbon.

Gift-wrapping Though the focus of Noel Night is holiday shopping, all those gifts will need to be wrapped eventually.

y the end of the season, the stacks of presents waiting to be covered with paper and ribbon can be overwhelming,
prompting gift givers to avoid wrapping until the last minute. Here are some tips and tricks to inspire individuals to tackle the chore.
Handle items with odd shapes
Wrapping rectangular boxes is easy, but irregular shapes can be tricky. Get creative by placing oddly-shaped gifts inside another container to make the shape more uniform, then wrap the item. Shoe boxes, coffee cans and even paper towel rolls can hold items.

Cover prices with festive stickers
If someone might need to exchange or return an item, do not cut off the price tag. Instead, place a festive sticker over the dollar amount, leaving the scan bar visible. This way the gift recipient can exchange the gift with ease if necessary.

Keep supplies close and ready
Devote a basket or bin to giftwrapping supplies and tools. To make wrapping items easier, organize smaller items like tissue paper, ribbon and labels as well.
Wrap on a firm surface
Use a table or counter to wrap gifts. Wood or laminate flooring works too. This ensures the paper stays taut, neat and easier to cut and position. When working on carpet or bedding, people risk tearing or puncturing the paper.
Code with colors, patterns No labels, no problem. It’s easy to know who each gift belongs to with a special wrapping paper. This is also a handy idea when wrapping gifts from Santa, as it will differentiate the gifts from the ones exchanged between family and friends.
Remember, with a few helpful pointers and a little creativity, wrapping gifts can be easy; it can be cheap too. Check the packaging for square footage before cutting the paper to avoid waste. Use washi tape or stamps to decorate recycled paper bags, or have children draw on them. For those who prefer to skip the wrapping themselves, some malls and retailers will offer complimentary wrapping services with a purchase. Residents can also help other families celebrate Christmas while receiving gift wrapping services from Project Merry Christmas in the Durango Mall.
Volunteers with Project Merry Christmas wrap holiday packages with a smile. The gift-wrapping station is the major fundraiser for the nonprofit that works to assist families suffering financial hardships during the holiday season. The giftwrapping station is located in the Durango Mall at 800 S. Camino del Rio. The hours are below:

Coworkers Workplace gift exchanges,
whether between two people or a group, are not uncommon in a tight-knit community like Durango. But knowing what to purchase for a coworker can be challenging. It is important to be appropriate and thoughtful, while also following some simple guidelines.
l Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it is acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Unless the recipient is also a close friend, it is best to avoid wearable products, like clothing, scented items, jewelry or accessories. l Give group gifts. Rather than purchasing multiple gifts for several individuals, it can be easier to give a group gift. This can include a wide variety of things, such as coffee and pastries from a local bakery, or an office plant to brighten up the space.
l Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they should not feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. l Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is usually discouraged. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a local business is an acceptable alternative. l Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It is best to check if there are rules in place for giving and receiving gifts during the holidays.

Harris research determined that people born between 1980 and 1996 value experiences, and they are spending more time and money on them. Malbec is most popular in Argentina, while Carménère is grown in Chile. l Zinfandel: Although mostly associated with the rosé wine White Zinfandel, Zinfandel is actually a medium-bodied red wine that originated in Croatia. l Pinot Noir: Soft tannins and high acid give this light-bodied red wine its appeal. The grapes were first widely planted in France but can now be found elsewhere.
l Sauvignon Blanc: Citrus-driven and often light-bodied, Sauvignon Blanc is another dry white grape planted widely in France. It also is a parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon. l Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio: Pinot Grigio is a zesty, dry white wine that is particularly associated with Italy even though it originated in France, where it is thought to be a mutation of the Pinot Noir grape. Pinot Grigio skins are not green like other white grapes, but have a gray hue, hence the name. l Reisling: Those who prefer a sweet white wine can opt for Reisling, which can be traced to Germany. It can be a good match for those who appreciate other sweet white wines, such as Moscato or Gewürztraminer.
