Holiday Decorations Handmade gifts, trinkets and treats make the giving season special. But making memories is what the holiday season is about. Try creating tree ornaments and decorations for a fun winter tradition. lMini sleighs: Create miniature replicas of Santa’s sleigh. Paint wooden craft sticks to form the main body of the sleigh and glue them together. Put one at the top perpendicular to the others to serve as the steering rudder. Two silver-painted sticks placed on their thin sides can look like the blades of a sled. l Popcorn garland: Garland made of popcorn is a classic handmade holiday project. For a fun twist and extra color on tree, toss the popcorn with food coloring and allow it to dry before stringing.

l Photo ornaments: Print out several different photos that you love. Purchase round or square thin wood pieces from a craft store and attach the photos with Mod Podge. When dry, drill a hole through the top and thread with twine. l Wooden snowflakes: Collect small twigs from outdoors, as well as leaves and some sprigs of evergreen. Arrange similarly sized twigs in the shape of snowflakes and glue together, or tie with twine. Embellish with glitter, dried berries and more.

Creative Crafts

l Dough ornaments: Anyone can have fun molding their own ornaments, letting them dry and then painting them. Use cookie cutters to get perfect holiday shapes. Craft stores sell various types of modeling clays and lightweight modeling materials. Or, make your own salt dough with 1 cup of flour, half a cup of salt and half a cup of water. l Sweet sentiments: Use old Scrabble letter tiles to form a favorite holiday phrase, like “Joy to the World.” Glue the tiles together and hang from the tree on a piece of ribbon.

Gift-wrapping Though the focus of Noel Night is holiday shopping, all those gifts will need to be wrapped eventually.

Join us for Noel Night

B

y the end of the season, the stacks of presents waiting to be covered with paper and ribbon can be overwhelming,

prompting gift givers to avoid wrapping until the last minute. Here are some tips and tricks to inspire individuals to tackle the chore.

Handle items with odd shapes

Wrapping rectangular boxes is easy, but irregular shapes can be tricky. Get creative by placing oddly-shaped gifts inside another container to make the shape more uniform, then wrap the item. Shoe boxes, coffee cans and even paper towel rolls can hold items.

(* when you mention this ad )

Cover prices with festive stickers

If someone might need to exchange or return an item, do not cut off the price tag. Instead, place a festive sticker over the dollar amount, leaving the scan bar visible. This way the gift recipient can exchange the gift with ease if necessary.

Keep supplies close and ready

Devote a basket or bin to giftwrapping supplies and tools. To make wrapping items easier, organize smaller items like tissue paper, ribbon and labels as well.

Wrap on a firm surface

Use a table or counter to wrap gifts. Wood or laminate flooring works too. This ensures the paper stays taut, neat and easier to cut and position. When working on carpet or bedding, people risk tearing or puncturing the paper.

Code with colors, patterns No labels, no problem. It’s easy to know who each gift belongs to with a special wrapping paper. This is also a handy idea when wrapping gifts from Santa, as it will differentiate the gifts from the ones exchanged between family and friends.

Remember, with a few helpful pointers and a little creativity, wrapping gifts can be easy; it can be cheap too. Check the packaging for square footage before cutting the paper to avoid waste. Use washi tape or stamps to decorate recycled paper bags, or have children draw on them. For those who prefer to skip the wrapping themselves, some malls and retailers will offer complimentary wrapping services with a purchase. Residents can also help other families celebrate Christmas while receiving gift wrapping services from Project Merry Christmas in the Durango Mall.

Volunteers with Project Merry Christmas wrap holiday packages with a smile. The gift-wrapping station is the major fundraiser for the nonprofit that works to assist families suffering financial hardships during the holiday season. The giftwrapping station is located in the Durango Mall at 800 S. Camino del Rio. The hours are below:

Gift Ideas

Coworkers Workplace gift exchanges,

whether between two people or a group, are not uncommon in a tight-knit community like Durango. But knowing what to purchase for a coworker can be challenging. It is important to be appropriate and thoughtful, while also following some simple guidelines.

l Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it is acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Unless the recipient is also a close friend, it is best to avoid wearable products, like clothing, scented items, jewelry or accessories. l Give group gifts. Rather than purchasing multiple gifts for several individuals, it can be easier to give a group gift. This can include a wide variety of things, such as coffee and pastries from a local bakery, or an office plant to brighten up the space.

l Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they should not feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. l Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is usually discouraged. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a local business is an acceptable alternative. l Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It is best to check if there are rules in place for giving and receiving gifts during the holidays.

Friends far away D

istant friends and family members may be out of sight but certainly not out of mind come the holidays. Even though not everyone can get together for a holiday dinner, there are ways to show those special people across the country — or around the world — just how much they are appreciated.

Video chatting, texting and email make it easier to stay in touch, but distance can make sharing the holidays and gifts challenging. But these tips can make easy work out of sending good tidings across the globe. Shipping gifts requires a little extra effort, but it will show friends and family just how much they’re loved. Here are some things to consider for easier gifting.

l Send food. Food can be a one-size-fits all gift. When exploring food gifts, there are so many options. If a recipient is living overseas or on the opposite side of the country, give them a favorite local foods from their hometown. Some examples include sauces, popcorn, cheeses and assorted snacks. l Consider size. Large, heavy items will cost more to ship,

so small gifts may be more practical. Consult with the post office or a preferred shipping provider about cost. Consider shipping directly to a loved one’s house. Online retailers usually give shoppers a choice of shipping address, and free or low-cost shipping may be included. l Leave ample time for delivery. The holiday season is a busy time of year for the shipping industry. While shipping companies try their best to get items to recipients in a timely manner, delays occur. To ensure gifts arrive on time, send them a week

Gift Ideas or two in advance, which also saves the extra expense for rush shipping. The US Postal Service says international deliveries take between seven and 21 days to arrive, so leave more time for overseas gifts. l Try a subscription service. Subscription services, such as beauty boxes, meal kits and streaming services, can be a great way to keep the gifts arriving long after the holidays have come and gone. l Avoid breakables. Stick to gifts that will travel well. Clothing, blankets, books and other durable gifts are good examples of gifts to ship.

Gift Ideas

Reluctant recipients Many people take pleasure in finding gifts under the tree, and tearing the wrapping paper to see the treasures inside. But others claim they have all they could ever need and want; those fellows insist that gifts are not necessary. So what can gift-givers do to please the reluctant recipients?

l Offer something handmade. Gifts come in all shapes and forms, and handmade gifts — particularly the consumable kind — won’t take up space and can show just how much you care. Find a nice wine, bake something delicious or harness another creative talent to present as a gift. If the gift is handmade, there is a greater chance it will be appreciated, even if someone is reluctant to receive gifts. l Give new life to a cherished item. Think about an item that may be a loved one’s most prized possession. Perhaps it is a porcelain doll from childhood or a photograph that can use reframing? Offer to have such an item repaired or restored if it’s starting to show its age. l Offer an experience as a gift. Research from Harris

says three-quarters of millennials prefer experiences over material items, and are spending more on travel, cultural events and dining out than objects. Even people who are reluctant to receive gifts may appreciate the gift of an experience that can broaden their horizons. l Explore useful gifts. These types of gifts may include gift cards to a frequently used supermarket, membership to a fitness center or even enrollment in a roadside assistance club. A subscription to a streaming movie service also is a great and useful gift. l Gift of company. Sometimes the best present is the gift of one’s presence. If a recipient really wants nothing, perhaps an evening spent together in one another’s company will make a perfect gift.

Experiences Giving the gift of an experience is a rising trend, particularly among millennials. Harris research determined that people born between 1980 and 1996 value experiences, and they are spending more time and money on them. Types of experiences include athletic pursuits, cultural visits, concerts, social events and travel. The research says 75 percent of millennials choose to spend money on a desirable experience instead of buying a product. Overall, consumer spending has shifted in the last 10 to 15 years. HSBC bank chief economist Kevin Logan said consumer spending on dining, recreation and travel has trended upward for more than a decade, while purchases of clothing and shoes has dropped. These trends can guide holiday gift-giving. Gifts that are more experience-oriented may be more memorable or appreciated by recipients. Some examples of local experiences to give to loved ones include skate, ski or snowboard lessons, a sleigh ride through the aspens, an escape room or tickets to a fun show or event, like Snowdown Follies.

Sports Fans Sports fans are passionate about their favorite sports and

A 2017 study from CreditCards.com found that American consumers spent $56 billion to attend sporting events over the prior year. But sports fans don’t just pay to see their favorite sports; they participate too. In the 12-month span covered by the study, sports lovers spent $33 billion on athletic equipment. Holiday shoppers no doubt have one or two sports fans and/or athletes on their shopping lists. The following sports-related gifts are a sure holiday hit. l Tickets: Few things can rival the thrill of seeing a favorite team in person. But sports tickets don’t come cheap, especially for fans who want to take their families to the game. Data from TeamMarking.com indicates that the average cost for a family of four to attend a National Football League game in 2016 was $502.84, while the same family spent roughly $220 that year to attend a Major League Baseball game. Those costs include food, beverages, parking and apparel. Holiday shoppers can soften the blow of attending a game with the family by purchasing the tickets. l Apparel: Watch a ballgame on television and it might seem as if every fan in the stands

is decked out in the home team’s colors. That’s not an illusion, as a 2018 survey from Statista found that more than 13 percent of sports fans spent $500 or more on sports apparel in 2017. Jerseys, hats, scarves and outerwear are sure to please sports fans who want to showcase the love they have for their favorite teams. l Streaming service/television packages: Sports fans live all over the globe, and many do not live within the television markets of their favorite teams. That can make it difficult, but not impossible, for sports fans to watch their favorite teams. Streaming services such as MLB.TV and NFL Sunday Ticket.TV (also available through DirecTV as NFL Sunday Ticket) enable fans to watch their favorite teams regardless of where they live. l Gear: For the sports fan who’s more than just a spectator but a participant as well, gear such as golf clubs, gloves, ski poles or whatever is necessary to participate in his or her favorite sport is sure to please. Some sports, such as golf and rock climbing, may require an intimate knowledge of a loved one’s game and skill level. In such instances, shoppers can simply buy gift cards to retailers that cater to athletes.

Fitness Fans T

he fitness industry is booming, and attracting new devotees every day. The growth of the fitness industry as a whole has included a surge in boutique fitness regimens. While major clubs offer classes, separate boutique clubs also are thriving. Clubs focusing on cycling, CrossFit and Zumba are just some examples.

Purchasing gifts for someone with a specific hobby or interest can be daunting because enthusiasts may have firm ideas of what they like and want to use. While the same can be said for athletes and people who live active lifestyles, there are plenty of gifts that will appeal to those who embrace fitness as part of their lifestyle.

l Bluetooth headphones: Music can inspire and get fitness buffs motivated. Bluetooth headphones connect wirelessly to most devices, and won’t get tangled up while running or hitting the elliptical at the gym. Select a pair that not only feel lightweight and comfortable, but also securely fit in the ears for ultimate convenience.

Gift Ideas l Water bottle: Hydration plays a big role in fitness. Many fitness enthusiasts carry water bottles daily, making it a great gift for those on the go. l Fitness tracker: Active people often like to track their progress during a workout or to see just how much they’ve been moving during the day. Fitness trackers are ideal for this. Different brands come at various price points to make giving easier on the budget. l Workout bag: A durable bag that can tote a change of clothes, towel, equipment and more to and from workouts is a gift any fitness enthusiast can enjoy. furniture consignment store

Wine M

any people have a favorite style of wine, and some even have a favorite vineyard. The popularity of wine makes it a versatile gift for the holidays, and a good item to bring along to a holiday party as a hostess present. Understanding the varietals can simplify choosing wine to pair with meals or sip while socializing.

ow! ar

l Cabernet Sauvignon: This is a full-bodied red grape heavily planted in the Bordeaux region of France. Cabernet generally has high levels of alcohol and tannins.

l Chianti: Chianti is the most famous Italian red wine in North America. It’s a dry red that pairs very well with food. Chianti, which comes from the Chianti region in Tuscany, is made exclusively with Sangiovese grapes, or at least 80 percent of them and other blends.

l Merlot: The smoothness and mild flavor of this red wine make it a great option for those who need an introduction to red wine. This wine is lower in tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, and it tends to have a fruitier flavor profile as well.

l Chardonnay: This is a medium- to fullbodied dry white wine. The Chardonnay grape is a white grape from the Burgundy region of France.

l Cabernet Franc: This is a light- to middleweight wine that features high acid content and savory flavors. l Malbec and Carménère: Similar to Merlot, these grapes originated in France but then made their way to other regions of the world. Malbec is most popular in Argentina, while Carménère is grown in Chile. l Zinfandel: Although mostly associated with the rosé wine White Zinfandel, Zinfandel is actually a medium-bodied red wine that originated in Croatia. l Pinot Noir: Soft tannins and high acid give this light-bodied red wine its appeal. The grapes were first widely planted in France but can now be found elsewhere.

l Sauvignon Blanc: Citrus-driven and often light-bodied, Sauvignon Blanc is another dry white grape planted widely in France. It also is a parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon. l Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio: Pinot Grigio is a zesty, dry white wine that is particularly associated with Italy even though it originated in France, where it is thought to be a mutation of the Pinot Noir grape. Pinot Grigio skins are not green like other white grapes, but have a gray hue, hence the name. l Reisling: Those who prefer a sweet white wine can opt for Reisling, which can be traced to Germany. It can be a good match for those who appreciate other sweet white wines, such as Moscato or Gewürztraminer.

Craft Beer Enthusiasts H

oliday shoppers with craft beer lovers on their shopping lists can consider these gift ideas when shopping for someone who enjoys nothing more than hoisting a pint.

l Pressurized growler: Craft breweries sell beer in cans and bottles, but many craft beer enthusiasts prefer to take their favorite ales home in growlers. Growlers are glass, ceramic or stainless steel bottles, often gallon-sized, that contain beer poured directly from the tap. This may make the beer taste more fresh than it might out of cans or bottles, and it provides beer lovers with that unmistakable draft beer taste. Beer sold in traditional

growlers may not stay fresh for more than a couple of days. But a pressurized growler can keep beer carbonated and fresh for weeks. l Insulated sling: Colorado is full of both craft beer and outdoor enthusiasts. The recreation opportunities are endless, but carrying a cooler on a mountain bike is not ideal. An insulated sling is a great way to keep a six-pack cold while exploring the Wild West.

l Magnetic bottle opener: Magnetic bottle openers save beer lovers the hassle of finding the bottle opener. Easily attached to the refrigerator, magnetic bottle openers can make great stocking stuffers. l Merchandise: From T-shirts to koozies, support for local crafts beer doesn’t have to stop with the drinks. Beer lovers on your list might appreciate swag or other useful accessories, like a keychain that

Gift Ideas doubles as a bottle-opener, from their favorite brewery in town. l Beer glasses: Though it might seem insignificant to non-beer drinkers, the glass in which beer is served affects its flavor. Beer glasses are shaped differently for a reason, and craft brewers give ample thought to which type of glass is best for different beers. Purchasing glasses from a recipient’s favorite brewery is one way to ensure the flavor of every beer is just right.

ince the early 1970s, video games have been a popular component of personal recreation and culture. The Entertainment Software Association’s annual report says 65 percent of homes in the United States own a gaming device, while 48 percent own “a dedicated game console.” The report also indicates consumers spent $25.5 billion on gaming in 2015, with $16.5 billion on gaming content alone.

The holiday season is a prime time to outfit gamers with new gear. When shopping for gifts for gamers, keep these suggestions in mind. l New console: Gamers have more console options than ever before. Shoppers can choose between the ultra-

portable Nintendo Switch; the Xbox One X, which boasts 4K capability; and the PS4. For those who don’t know where to start, a console upgrade can be the way to go. l Controller charger: Video game controller chargers and docks can give renewed power
