Parade of Lights prepares for 26th year on Main Street
I
n 1989, Cortez hosted the first Parade of Lights to the community - with only five floats in attendance. The lack of participation didn’t dampen spirits as last year, 72 floats traveled down Main Street. “I think this event is something the community really appreciates,” said Terry McCabe, Chair of the Parade and member of the Four Corners Board of Realtors. For the past eight years, McCabe has been chair of the parade organization. She sees the parade as a kickoff to the holiday season and a chance for families to have a little fun. “There is a lot of work involved but I like that aspect. I like that we are giving back to our community and I feel that is the whole point of the parade. It’s our gift to the community.” Currently, any business, organization, or individual can create a float to showcase down Main Street. There is no fee for entries. The board also awards cash prizes to the first, second and third place winners in three categories. The parade begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.

A grand marshal, a grand affair
Four Corners Child Advocacy Center looks forward to leading the way By Rachel Segura
T
he Four Corners Child Advocacy Center (The Nest) is proud to lead the dozens of business and organizational floats at the 26th annual Parade of Lights. Voted on by the Board of Realtors of Montezuma County, The Nest was chosen to kick off the parade on Saturday, Dec. 5 because of their long-standing community involvement. Rose Jergens, executive director for The Nest, said she is excited about the opportunity to be first in the procession of floats. “I think it’s great we were asked to lead the parade. It gives us an opportunity to showcase our board, and gives people the chance to learn more about us and the work we do.” This is the third consecutive year that The Nest will be participating in the parade. Jergens said they have never taken home a prize for their floats, but the experience is always wonderful. Since this year’s parade theme is the Legend of the Christmas Nest, the advocacy center will be constructing a bird’s nest on their float. “I’m not sure how we are going to do it, but that’s the plan,” Jergens said. The theme may not coalesce entirely with The Nest as an organization but Jergens explained their acronym: “Nurturing an Environment for Safe Transitions.” “We strive to provide a safe place for kids going through a horrible experience, by offering them somewhere they can transition in a safe, trustworthy environment.” Each year The Nest gives out candy and postcards to the spectators on Main Street. The postcards contain information about The Nest, which Jergens said is a good way to educate the community and spread awareness about the organization. She also enjoys seeing the faces of the crowd light up with anticipation and excitement. She looks forward to the event herself because of the diverse, interesting floats other businesses come up with. She also enjoys seeing the faces in the crowd. “Everything we do is confidential, but when we are on the street and I see one of our kids’ face light up, it becomes that much more meaningful.”
Legend of the Christmas Nest For the 26th annual Parade of Lights celebration, the Board of Realtors chose a theme based on the Legend of the Christmas Nest. The legend, which originates from Germany, has been a tradition in some families for many years. The bird is considered a symbol for luck and fortune and because of that, a bird’s nest was also a source of luck. When families would select a Christmas tree, it was believed that finding a bird’s nest in their chosen tree meant a year of prosperity, happiness

and good health. Nowadays, if families opt for artificial trees they can choose to honor the tradition by placing decorative ornaments such as birds, nests or eggs on their trees. This year, floats will use the Legend of the Christmas Nest for inspiration to create unique, lively floats for everyone in Montezuma County to enjoy. So, if you see any bird’s nests traveling down Main Street, consider it a sign of good fortune to the community.

Do what you love love what you do Local graphic designer happy to create for a living
By Rachel Segura
R
. Christopher Vest said it was a glorious day when he was approached to do artwork for a T-Shirt company in Louisiana, in 1982. “In those days it was old school,” he said. “Literally it was “cut and paste”, dark room work, rub-on lettering and rapidograph pens.” However, working creatively in the arts versus off-shore oil field operations was a dream come true, and he never went back. Photo manipulation became the most comfortable way of using his creative energy and now, he provides design services to the City of Cortez by creating banners, online ads, postcards, newspaper ads, and many other design projects. As a counterpart to his work as a graphic designer, he also delves into fine art. “Surviving in the arts is a great privilege that I’m grateful to be able to do. It’s a happy compulsion and something I’ll never tire of — nor retire from.” In 2008, it was the first year he worked artistically with the Parade of Lights. In 2014, he created the banner that hugs Main Street for the week prior to the parade. It’s no secret that Cortez, and its surrounding communities, are incredibly partial to the Parade of Lights. Every year, more spectators line the street. Vest is a fan of the dazzling colors against the wintry sky a source from which he likely draws inspiration. “I get to do more abstract design (when it comes to the parade) and I don’t do that very often.” Vest is not the type of artist you will find showcasing his prints or canvases at art galleries - although he has been featured at the former Fusion Gallery in Dolores and the Cortez Cultural Center. No, he chooses to keep to himself and fly under the artistic community’s radar. Lucky for him, his talents are prominently displayed each year at the most happiest, joyous of times.
