Trade is a family tradition By Garett Dickinson

S

tonework goes back to the beginning of civilization. Since rock is naturally available, it made an obvious choice for construction. Brick and mortar soon followed. Techniques evolved and civilizations like the Egyptians, Greeks and Mayans crafted structures still with us today. Originally, masons would have apprentices and through experience they would move through the ranks. Often, one

would be born into this life. Masonry has historically been a family trade, many modern outfits reflect this tradition, such as Rundquist Masonry, a local four generation company. Another family impacting local stonework is the Stahls. Brian Stahl, the family patriarch, originally gained his education through the Stone Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. Brian brought these skills to Colorado in

Four Corners Real Estate Guide

the 1980s to start his new business, In Stone. His son Josh was introduced to the trade watching his father work and began apprenticing for him as a teen cleaning rocks and mixing mortar. By 19, Josh made the decision to be a mason full time. “School wasn’t really for me and I work well with my hands,” Josh said. “I’m trying to create long-lasting stone art… I hope my son’s grandson can say my great grandfather built that.” Working together for many years in the Roaring Fork Valley, Brian recalled their relationship during that time. “It was gratifying,” he said. “It was also the kind of thing where it was a guy that I could depend on.” Josh, now the owner of Elite Stone and Tile, has been working in the Durango area since 2004. The combination of creativity and building something that lasts has kept Brian’s son in the trade for nearly 30 years. Both father and son have worked on many local projects throughout the years, including luxury homes in the Glacier Club and properties such as the Wild Wings Ranch. A property Josh has been involved in for years, Elk Park Ranch, is a recurring project for him through multiple owners. Originally done by Harrmann Masonry, Stahl took on a remodel when the original owners sold. Since that time, he has completed columns, floors, walls, interior and exterior fireplaces, an outdoor pizza oven and much more.

This job was fairly unique for modern masonry as nearly all the rock was gathered from the base of cliffs on the property. Josh described reducing rocks that weighed a few hundred pounds into manageable sizes that could be transported to the worksite. There, the stones would be worked into the exact dimensions needed, all done by hand with hammer and chisel. Many masons primarily still use these tools, and power tools such as diamond blade equipped saws are frowned upon unless necessary. Brian was trained this way by the Stone Foundation, and passed this on to his son. Once a team, the Stahl’s

primarily work separately now, although they occasionally collaborate. Still, they use the same tools of the trade. Brian listed tools and techniques that ancient predecessors would know well, like the pulley, inclined plane, and lever. Some things never go out of style. Traditions of old are visible in our community as numerous buildings rely on the fundamental masonry techniques of the past. Many buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places on Main Street and East Third Avenue are beautiful works of stone and brick craftsmanship, including examples such as the Strater Hotel and St. Mark’s Espicopal Church.

Josh said one of his favorite examples locally is Sacred Heart Catholic Church. It is another structure that is just as much a work of art as anything else. He explained the detail the builders created by contrasting the blonde sandstone common in Durango with a red variety in both the arches and windows as well as the quoins, the stones used in the corners of buildings. Other buildings, such as St. Mark’s, showcase gothic style arches, pointed rather than rounded, framing stained glass windows. St Mark’s also has a walled garden with a matching arched entryway that blends style with structure. An appreciation for historical buildings with artistic masonry isn’t the only passion that runs in the family. Josh is also the owner of Colorado Carved, where he sculpts stone sinks, even matching the sinks with the stone and tile he installs in homes. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, nor stone from the cliff, as his father is also a stone sculptor. In his self-directed art education, Brian attended the MARBLE/Marble Stone Carving Symposium, a multiday stone carving workshop held in Marble, Colorado. He now lives above his studio where he operates both his masonry and sculpting businesses and he’s able to sculpt whenever creativity stirs. Family craftsmen like the Stahls create utilitarian but also highly aesthetic structures, and they’re helping to keep the art of stone work alive and lasting well into the future. n

5 steps to organization By Garett Dickinson

L

imited space creates challenges for comfortable living and efficiency affects the quality of daily life. So how, with limited space or resources, can we maximize what we have? 5S is a practical methodology that businesses use to minimize waste and maximize capability and consistency. Developed by Toyota and integral to their success, it has been adopted worldwide. A five step process, 5S creates impressive improvements. As one instructor quipped “It works for business, but I use 5S in my personal life.” Indeed, its benefits have extended into my daily life too, most recently in the reorganization of my home. The 5S steps are; sort, set, shine, standardize and sustain. Before we look at how 5S can create a revitalized living space, I’ll offer some personal advice. When envisioning your space, dream big. Account for things like what your perfect morning routine would look like and how you would ideally spend evenings. If you cook, or don’t, what kitchen arrangement is best? By addressing your desired lifestyle and routines along with material considerations like storage and furniture, you can create an environment that has a positive impact from morning to night.

SORT: Many people have become familiar with Marie Kondo and her method for decluttering. This is similar to step one. Get rid of what you don’t use and sort what remains into logical categories like used daily, seasonally, in the morning or evening etc. Be honest with yourself about what is used and needed. SET: Let’s organize! Point of use storage, or POUS, allows access to everything needed for specific tasks without wasted space or time. Seemingly inconsequential, seconds add up and are especially noticed when time is short, like rushed mornings. Hanging pot racks above the sink or stove reduces accessing cabinets. Beds with integrated storage eliminate walking from a closet across the bedroom. This is an area where creativity makes a difference. Another element is layout. Use graph paper to map a space to scale and then cut out furniture footprints using the same paper to plan a layout without unnecessarily moving things. In small spaces, inches make a difference. Setting items off-angle can create walking space and furniture built to fit in corners, like desks, go a long way. SHINE: Cleanup time! I integrate this into the first two steps, but it can be done

separately. In addition to creating a fresh feel for your new space, continue organizing to make regular cleaning more efficient. For example, I keep an additional broom in my bathroom to easily sweep after cleaning my cat’s litter box and I now sweep this whole room as often as I clean the litter. STANDARDIZE: Organizing alone won’t perpetuate itself, so daily action is also needed. Checklists and schedules, in addition to new habits, help internalize changes. As I read and journal with my morning coffee, I habituated returning those items to their POUS rather than leaving them on the table. SUSTAIN: Discipline is key to keeping up with organization. As with anything, long-term success requires continual follow through. In the classes I took, we were cautioned that this can be the hardest step of 5S, but once the benefits are continually felt it becomes like second nature. Using 5S in a 535 square foot space, I created my own place for movies and reading, an exercise area, home office with drafting table, breakfast bar, pool table, feline feeding and play zone, a sewing table and all the requisite storage. Try it out for yourself and see what practical magic you can create! n

Plan ahead for a successful renovation Remodeling projects are significant undertakings. Homeowners must consider a host of variables before any such project can begin. While planning ahead may take time, it is essential to ensuring successful completion of a renovation project. Consider these pre-renovation planning pointers to help any job go smoothly.

Determine your motivation for renovating

Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait

a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services. Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes productivity and affordability.

Many homeowners are under the impression that doing the work themselves can save a considerable amount of money. This may be the case for homeowners with renovation experience. But by and large, professional contractors are an asset to any renovation. They can provide a realistic overview of the project, map out projected costs, point out areas that could be troublesome, and may have industry contacts that can keep supply costs low. Even if a homeowner will do a portion of the job, a contractor can do the bulk of the work and keep the project on budget.

Get necessary permits

Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this

step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project. A permit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan. If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits. Other considerations when planning a renovation include writing out a strict budget, gathering inspiration, drawing renovation plans to-scale, pouring over material reviews and getting recommendations for reliable professionals to do the job. While not every obstacle can be avoided, planning is a good way to start successfully. n
