Connecting women with what they need The Women’s Resource Center advocates for the personal empowerment and economic self-sufficiency of women and girls in La Plata County.
STARTED IN 1987 by a group of local women, the WRC was created to assist the growing population of women who faced serious economic crisis after losing their partners. Because of the long distances between communities in southwest Colorado, many displaced homemakers were unable to locate services to help them get back on their feet. The center was established to provide a one-stop location where women could learn about and access all the resources the community offered. Today, the nonprofit serves over 1,700 people per year with eight programs.

The Resource & Referral program is the core of the work for the Women’s Resource Center. The staff researches and compiles information on the community’s resources, partners with other agencies to understand their referral requirements and connects those in need to resources in the community that can help them overcome personal, financial and emotional hurdles. The employees and volunteers understand that when clients have the resources they need, they can avoid other severe challenges in the future.

Educate WRC recognizes that a good education is the best way to avoid a life of poverty. The Keys to High School Success program prepares La Plata County eighth grade girls for their transition into high school with a one-day conference held at Fort Lewis College in May. Now in its 19th year, girls from throughout the county gather together for a day of workshops designed to cover issues like positive self-image, healthy communication styles, anti-bullying, self-esteem, how to handle stress and the importance of graduating high school.
According to the National Report on the State of Self-Esteem for teens, seven in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with family and friends. Combatting the feeling of self-doubt, and the oftentumultuous relationships with family and friends, the conference addresses these issues before they result in selfharm or a desire to quit school. Such is the mission of another youth program; Get your Girl Power focuses on helping local fifth grade girls prepare for their transition to middle school. The goal of both programs is to show these girls that they can become confident, self-sufficient leaders in their own communities. The WRC offers an Educational Opportunity Scholarship fund for women looking to improve their
employability through certified training, accreditation or college classes. These funds are available to people who are looking to further their education and increase their economic self-sufficiency.
a sliding scale. Through this program individuals assess their strengths and weaknesses, as well as set goals and develop an action plan for success.
Other Assistance Career
WRC has a Low Bono Program that connects low to medium income clients with a lawyer for a one-hour legal consultation for only $30 in cases of divorce or custody.
This assistance includes everything from resume help to professional coaching. Clients are able to use office equipment at the center to look for jobs or work on a resume. WRC partners with the Small Business Development Center at Fort Lewis College to provide free, one-hour consultations with a business expert for those women looking to launch a small business or grow an existing venture. In 2013, WRC started the Professional Development Coaching program, which allows clients six, oneon-one sessions with a professional certified coach over three months on
Get involved How can I help?
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO HELP WOMEN AND FAMILIES in this community. Volunteering time, offering empowering workshops and supporting fundraisers and events that benefit WRC are a few ways we take care of each other in the Four Corners. But there are other ways to get involved, too. City Market allows all community members to link their value card to a local charity through the City Market Cares Program. Sign up by emailing your name, address, phone number and City Market value card number to programs@wrcdurango.org. Ultimately, becoming a member of the organization has its perks. WRC members receive discounts for a wide variety of health and wellness products, services and retail businesses in addition to special rates for Auto, Homeowner’s, Renter’s and Long Term Care Insurance through Liberty Mutual Insurance and The Prudential Insurance Company of America. l
Legal
Financial The Womenade program is a grassroots effort that began in 2002 that provides emergency financial assistance through one-time grants of up to $500. One of only two financial assistance programs in La Plata County, Womenade helps normally self-sufficient individuals overcome unexpected financial hardship due to issues such as overdue rent, car repairs or childcare. l
