Change these bad beauty habits L
ooking good and feeling healthy are top priorities for many women. In addition to spending hours researching the latest beauty regimens and spending thousands on products, women could be engaging in a few habits that may be doing more harm than good. As cosmetic procedures and beauty trends are passed down from generation to generation, some women may be unsure what is best for them and which habits need tweaking. According to a recent survey from YouBeauty.com, a majority of women say they spend anywhere from $5 to $15 per month on beauty products, not including skincare products. But are those efforts fruitful? Here are some common beauty faux pas that women likely want to avoid. Scrubbing skin Dermatologists say the skin naturally sheds dead cells, so for most people it is unnecessary to use harsh exfoliants or scouring pads. In fact, exfoliating the skin too much can cause irritation and excess dryness over time. Try to exfoliate your face and body no more than twice a week, advises the American Board of Dermatology. Even those with oily skin should scale back, as exfoliating too frequently can actually cause oil glands to produce more oil. Use an easy hand when exfoliating to avoid redness. Popping pimples Both women and men are guilty of popping pimples. It can be quite difficult to resist popping a pimple that has sprouted in the middle of your face, but doing so can cause irritation and spread bacteria. You may end up getting more blemishes as a result. If you cannot resist popping the pimple, cleanse the area first, use a warm cloth or steam to help bring the blemish to a head and use tissue-covered fingers to apply gentle pressure. Then use an antibacterial cleanser to clean the area again. Wrapping wet hair in a towel turban Gathering wet locks together and twisting them into a towel is a recipe for damage and breakage. Wet hair is more delicate than dry hair, and it can stretch or break more easily. Gently squeeze hair dry with the towel and then use a detangling spray to make it easier to comb out knots. Putting hair too tightly in elastics and wearing them for long periods of time can result in thinning of the hair or a condition known as traction alopecia over time. Failing to clean makeup tools All of those brushes, wands and applicators need to be routinely washed with a mild cleanser and allowed to air dry. Otherwise, they become harbingers of bacteria and even mold. You can risk infection if you are using a dirty brush near the eyes or nasal passages. Aim to wash cosmetic tools at least once a week if you wear makeup every day. Layering products You may have a relative beauty arsenal tucked into your medicine cabinet, but while these products may work well on their own, there is no way to know how they will interact. Less is more when using different beauty serums. Experiment with each item separately to gauge skin reaction and if an allergy is present. 8 h What a Girl Wants h November 8, 2015
Poor washing habits Some women fall into bed at night without washing makeup from their faces. While this is alright once in a while, it may lead to irritation or blemishes over time. Surprisingly, too much washing of the face can be just as bad, especially if you are soaping up in the morning as well. You could be stripping your face of helpful oils at the start of the day, when skin needs added protection from the elements. Stick to washing your face at night so it can naturally restore itself while you sleep. Looking good requires effort, but some beauty habits popular among women might be doing more harm than good.

Understanding a woman’s approach to finances W
hen we think of risk takers and home makers, we have a tendency to divide these traits based upon gender. Men are assigned the role of the “risk taking financial daredevils,” while women are often categorized as “cautious and security driven” sound investors. Recent studies are shedding new light on the combination of myth and reality captured in the above statements in order to better meet the needs of women in the financial arena. Anja Peter, of Bank Coop in Switzerland concurs that “naturally, there are differences between men and women, biologically and socially, and this is reflected in investment behavior.” This can be apparent when issues such as ecology, ethics and microcredits are concerned. Yet, when the deal is on the table these interests do not always impact the actual investment decision. Women and Risk Aversion? Stability seems to be a prevalent factor when it comes to female portfolio management. According to a study conducted at the Centre for Financial Research at the University of Cologne, female fund managers switch their portfolios around less often than their male colleagues. Furthermore, women’s strategies and the subsequent performance tend to be more stable. Another study done at The German Institute for Economic Research revealed that “women would take more risk if they had more money.” Women generally still only have about half as much to invest as men, which inevitably compels them to be more cautious; that may be the real reason for the apparent risk aversion.” Financial Self Confidence and Performance Measurement German Comdirect Bank and the DAB reveal that, while women have less confidence in their financial knowledge than men, this is not matched by poorer investment choices and management. Fifty-eight percent of men rated their financial understanding as “good or very good” compared to 47 percent of women. Yet, when half a million private portfolios were sampled in 2007 and 2008, women did four percent to six percent better than men.
“Men buy shares from Mars and women have a savings account on Venus” 14 h What a Girl Wants h November 8, 2015
Investor Self Identity and How to Make it Work We know that some aspects of the male-female roles are intrinsically fixed by nature: child bearer, hunter and gatherer, amongst many more. After centuries of entrenched gender roles some elements still remain and are likely to do so for the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, the truth is that there have never been so many highly qualified women with the means to invest and the desire to do so securely and appropriately. Understanding whether you are the “self-conscious, pleasure oriented” younger woman, the “interested and open-minded active group” of women who are open to what banks have to offer or the “traditional conservative” loyal and risk averse woman will help you and your advisor in determining the best path for growing and managing the world of investments. First National Bank of Durango is a sponsor for the What a Girl Wants expo.

Nail art a growing craze
T
housands of women and men visit the nail salons each year to get manicures and pedicures. Billions of dollars are spent on having nails beautified, and many people look forward to the pampering they get at salons. Although the majority of procedures done at salons are safe, there are still concerns that arise among consumers. At-home nail art sets are rising in popularity as many would-be nail artists find they can achieve professional looks at home for far less than they would pay at salons. Both money saving and health concerned people, are finding their skills are not only professional-like but easy to-do as well. If not properly sanitized, tools and equipment used by the salon can lead to infection. Nail procedures can spread both bacterial and viral nail infections. Most nail art kits purchased in store are a one-time use. Tools are thrown away and many applications are simply polish strips, where the excess is cut off the nail and also thrown away. Cost is another factor. Depending on services rendered, such as acrylic overlays or special wraps, salon services can cost up to $100 per visit. Nail art options are generally added on for additional prices. But many different products enable nail enthusiasts to replicate salon looks at home. Some of these can be purchased at the drug store, others through a direct-sale model or online. All of the nail products are relatively easy to use and can make doing home manicures and pedicures fun. 16 h What a Girl Wants h November 8, 2015
Visit the pharmacy or your favorite chain store and you’re likely to find nail polish strips, like those from Sally Hansen that can easily be applied without the mess or fuss of using polish and a brush. They are easily pressed into place with an orange manicure stick and the excess is filed off. There’s no need to wait for dry time and your look can last up to 10 days. These sheets are made from nail polish, so they will have an odor. They are also removed much in the same way as traditional nail polish. Turn on the television and you just may see an infomercial for a nail art stamping set called Salon Express. Individuals use templates and a special applicator to stamp a nail art design onto the nail. With this system, you use nail polish and have to do all of the things traditional nail polish application requires. That includes drying time, as well as applying a clear coat to seal in the results. It may take a few practice sessions with the stamp and plates to achieve the look you desire on your nails. Another innovative product now on the market is vinyl nail shields that are offered through a company called Jamberry Nails. This business was the creative concept of three sisters: Keri Evans, Christy Hepworth and Lyndsey Ekstrom. After receiving pedicures at a salon, the three sisters put their heads together and designed nail shields that could be put on in the comfort of their own homes. The result: nail shields in an array of artistic colors and eye-catching designs. The nail shields are safer than conventional products with no harsh chemicals. Because they are heat-, and pressure-applied, they’re durable and last approximately two to three weeks on fingers and six to eight weeks on toes. In June of 2012, Jamberry announced their official launch into the direct sales party plan industry, enabling independent consultants to sell nail shields to earn extra income or to simply keep friends and family members’ nails looking fresh and beautiful. More information is available at www.jamberrynails.com. Costing anywhere from $9 to $15, these nail art products enable consumers to create professional results at home for a fraction of salon costs.
