DYNAMIC DURBAN
Fringed with palm trees, meandering walkways and warm waves, Durban has always been synonymous with family holidays and long, lazy days spent soaking up the sunshine. But dynamic Durban is much more than a leisure destination and ‘a pretty face’; this gem of a city has many facets, each radiating its own unique brilliance. This past year has seen Durban shine on many fronts, with the city being awarded accolades in several arenas.
O
n the literary front, Durban has been recognised as a UNESCO World City of Literature (2018) – a first not only for South Africa, but for the African continent. Home to festivals like Poetry Africa and Time of the Writer, the city’s literary scene continues to nurture new talent and nourish seasoned literature lovers. The Articulate Africa Book Fair, which formed part of the Essence Festival, is a much-anticipated new addition (edition) to our already impressive library of events. Having also established a reputation of excellence as a business destination, the 24th annual World Travel Awards gave Durban the prestigious title of Africa’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2017. The World Travel Awards also recognised local stakeholders in this arena: the Durban International Convention Centre scooped up the title of Africa’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre 2017 and Hilton Durban was chosen as South Africa’s Leading Business Hotel 2017. Condé Nast Traveller listed the Moses Mabhida Stadium as one of South Africa’s 20 most beautiful places to visit. The Stadium’s architecture is magnificent in scale and design, making it a popular subject for photographers from around the globe. Its iconic centre arch – Africa’s very own Arc de Triomphe, was inspired by the ‘Y’ shape of the South African flag, and houses a Skycar that offers exhilarating and panoramic views of the city and Indian Ocean. As you can see, Durban is much more than a popular holiday destination. If you love the energy and diversity of our city, you may even consider investing in property here. For the third consecutive year, Durban has been rated as the South African city with the highest quality of life in the international Mercer’s 19th Quality of Living Survey. The same survey, on a global scale, ranked Durban as second, after Port Louis in Mauritius. Durban Tourism recently launched an exciting new campaign! To learn more, please read our feature entitled ‘Discover Durban’, which starts on page 20. Whether you are visiting Durban for business or leisure (or looking to move here in future), we wish to welcome you to share in our melting pot of culture, heritage, natural beauty and world-class facilities. The all new, refurbished Cargo Hold Restaurant at uShaka Marine World has now also just been honoured with a Platinum accolade in the Diners Club International Wine List awards. The awards recognise restaurants in the country that stock the very best wines. With over 225 restaurants participating in this competition, it is quite an achievement to be selected, especially with the judges being highly esteemed members of the wine community, including that of publisher of the Platters wine guide, Jean-Pierre Rossouw. “We are exceptionally pleased with having being acknowledged and having received a Platinum Award this year. We look forward to welcoming diners to enjoy our wine selection as well as our new menu in our new vintage setting,” stated uShaka Marine World Food and Beverage Executive Abel Mokoena.

Play together at
uShaka
Marine World
this festive season
Fun is a universal language – as people from all walks of life and even all parts of the globe find out when they visit uShaka Marine World.
S
o, with the summer holidays upon us, why not get down to uShaka? There’s something for everyone – from youngsters who can relish some play in the sunshine to adults who can play at being forever young. Situated on Durban’s Golden Mile and perched just outside the entrance to Africa’s busiest port, uShaka Marine World is everything you’ve always looked forward to when it comes to fun by the sea! Explore the mysteries of the ocean at the fifth largest aquarium in the world. Sea World is anchored by the majestic ‘Phantom Ship’, an old 1920’s cargo ship that is said to have been wrecked on the Sea World Island. Stroll through underground viewing galleries extending through the shipwreck and peek into the world of 300 marine species and 10 000 sea creatures. Sea World also promises fun-filled seal shows at the Seal Stadium and the Penguin Rockery, which is home to 63 endangered African Penguins. Fun island activities include the Snorkel Lagoon, Ocean Walker, Shark Dive, a ray touch pool and stingray feeding opportunity. Stop over at the Dolphin Stadium and get to know our favourite finned friends. There are two dolphin shows daily. Gambit, the largest bottlenose dolphin in any oceanarium in the world, is undoubtedly the star of our shows. Spend a few hours at Wet ‘n Wild where you can experience the thrill

of the adrenaline pumping fun rides or, alternatively, chill on the Lazy River Adventure River Ride. New to the park is the scintillating body tornado water slide – the first of its kind in South Africa! The ultimate live act is Dangerous Creatures – a wonder world of all that is slimy, scaly and creepy. This is a ‘Zanzibar’ warehouse filled with exotic reptiles saved from a shipwreck. So, look out for poisonous snakes such as the king cobra, black mamba and Gaboon adder, crocodiles, poison dart frogs, tarantulas and tree vipers. There are even a few surprises guaranteed to make your flesh crawl. uShaka Kids World boasts one of Africa’s largest jungle gyms with netted mazes, tunnels, stairways, link bridges and swings. Designed for youngsters between two and 12, this adventure island includes loads of entertainment and play areas that are enjoyed by uShaka friends such as Delia the Dolphin, Slippy the Seal, Rusty the Penguin and Raggy the Shark. If that’s not enough, you can shop till you drop at Village Walk, enjoy a meal or a treat at our huge selection of restaurants or get a bird’s eye view of Durban’s Golden Mile via the uShaka Rope Adventure Park, which is a series of rope bridges, obstacle courses, climbing nets, zip lines and crossings with the longest continuous relay system in Africa.

FLEA, FOODIE AND FARMERS
MARKETS
I
f you are an avid flea, you will most likely agree that few things beat the childlike thrill of ferreting through a pile of fabulous fabrics or running your eager fingers over the spines of well-loved books in search of a particular volume that calls to be relocated to your already bulging bookshelf; or the excitement of discovering a pair of terracotta lampstands that will look perfect in your newly revamped earthy guest bedroom. And if you are a foodie like me, what can compare to sampling creamy handmade cheeses on shards of salted crackers, or the delight of shopping for crusty artisan bread and tangy relishes to transform a simple roast beef sandwich into a gourmet extravagant-wich? Aside from all the wonderful goodies you can buy (and try), markets are the ideal place to spend time with your favourite people in a relaxed, fun environment. Imagine walking hand-in-hand with your sweetheart or arm-in-arm with your besties, as you stroll among the stalls, foraging for organic salad ingredients or shopping for unique treasures and gifts. Most markets also offer live music, delicious fleamarket fare and fun activities for children, making them the perfect weekend outing for the entire family. We have compiled a list of some of Durban’s most popular markets, hoping that you will be inspired to visit a few.

LIVE LOCAL
- Durban’s Prime Nodes Now More Accessible Responding to the times we live in and the need to have information literally, at our fingertips, two prime Durban nodes, namely uMhlanga Rocks and Florida Road, have developed unique area-based apps.
F
ree to download from all app stores, these apps have been developed to enhance the experience of each place for businesses, residents and tourists, by providing a single ‘go-to’ point for all local information. The APPs are comprehensive and user-friendly, grouping similar content together thus making it easier for people to access the exact information they need. From a comprehensive A-Z, to where to eat, shop and stay in each place, every business located in that area is listed with a click-to-call phone number. Local knowledge, from fishing regulation and where to hire umbrellas, to what time the public clinic opens, and when the local library hosts kids’ reading hour, is contained in the Area Info section, which is constantly refined and updated.
In terms of safety, app lists the hotline number for the local Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), on site and available 24/7. In addition to this, the apps also allow you to Report a Fault, by capturing an image and sending an alert for everything from streetlights out, to lost pets, directly to the UIP teams. The events section of the app gives you line-up of activities in each area, as well as the option of checking out what is happening in the whole of Durban. Understanding that these nodes are part of a great City and provincial offering, each app has a More Durbs section, which, again via a categorised listing, gives the user info on everything from Township Tours to Local Markets and everything in between.
Download any of these FREE APPs as follows: uMhlanga Rocks Search uMhlanga Rocks in your iTunes or Google Play Store and download or read more at www.umhlangauip.co.za. Florida Road • Android Users: Search Florida Road in the Google Play Store and download • iPhone Users: Search PWA App launcher FREE from iTunes and download and then type in Florida Road in the app launcher programme and download. Or read more at www.floridaroaduip.co.za.

Shisanyama CELEBRATE SUMMER WITH SIZZLING
It is summertime in Durban and there is a buzzword on locals’ lips – one that is as sizzling as a local summer. Derived from the Zulu words for ‘hot’ (shisa) and ‘meat’ (nyama), Shisanyama is far more than meat grilled over an open flame. It is an authentic celebration of Kasi (township) life, and is best enjoyed in the company of friends and family. The perfect Shisanyama should be served with generous helpings of conversation, laughter and the clanking of glasses – as you and your friends toast to the winding down of a busy year and share your dreams and aspirations for the one ahead. Top it off with some great music and you have the recipe for an unforgettable Shisanyama experience.
P
art of the fun is selecting the meat cuts you wish to tuck into before they are spiced and braai’d over the open flames. The prepared meat is served in platters, to share from, along with pap (refined maizemeal porridge, similar perhaps to polenta) and traditional sheba (a delicious tomato and onion accompaniment (there are many versions of this sauce, which is sometimes spiked with fresh chilli to add even more ‘shisa’ to the Shisanyama experience). Other popular side dishes include chakalaka (a spicy vegetable relish), dombolo (dumplings) bread and coleslaw.
There are a number of fashionable restaurants and lounges in and around Durban, each offering a unique spin on the Shisanyama experience. You can opt for a traditional fireside meal, or a more sophisticated affair, if you are in the mood to dress up and dazzle. Many of these spots are famous not only for their excellent flamed-grilled fare, but for the live music and entertainment they offer.

Home grown choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo takes Durban to the world!
T
he City of Durban has renewed its three-year partnership with the highly acclaimed choral group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. First signed on 15 December 2015, at the Clermont home of Joseph Shabalala – founder of the group, the partnership entrusts group members as ambassadors of the Durban brand. It was music to the ears of those attending the launch of Durban Tourism’s exciting Discover Durban campaign, which was held at the Beverly Hills on 30 November. It’s official! Ladysmith Black Mambazo will continue to promote Durban to the rest of the world by representing and wearing the brand, displaying the Durban flag at international events and even incorporating the word ‘Durban’ into some of their songs. The timing is perfect, as the group has just received two Grammy nominations for the 2018 award, which will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on 28 January 2018. They have won four Grammys to date. Celebrated as one of South Africa’s most prolific recording artists, they have also been honoured with gold and platinum discs. Formed in Clermont in the early 1960s, the group took its name from founder Joseph Shabalala’s home town of Ladysmith. ‘Mambazo’ the Zulu word for ‘axe‘, was added chosen to signify their ability to ‘chop down’ the attempts of singing rivals, and the word ‘Black’, referenced oxen – the strongest of all the farm animals.
The group’s upbeat, polished choral style borrows from a traditional music style called Isicathamiya, which means “to step lightly on one’s toes” – a style that was developed in the mines of South Africa. During the 1970s and early 1980s Ladysmith Black Mambazo became the most successful singing group in South Africa. They received their first record contract following a radio broadcast in 1970, and when Paul Simon visited the country in the 80’s, incorporating the group’s famous harmonies into his Graceland album, they quickly rose to international stardom. Amambazo, as they are called locally, won their first Grammy in 1988, for a song entitled Shaka Zulu. They have since been awarded two more Grammys – one in 2004 for Raise Your Spirit Higher and the other in 2009, for Ilembe. Following the early days with Paul Simon, the group has recorded with a long list of famous artists including Stevie Wonder, Sarah McLahlan and Josh Groban. Their harmonies have also made it to the big screen, having been featured on soundtracks such as Coming to America, featuring Eddie Murphy and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. You can visit www.mambazo.com to view their performance calendar.

“The Cell C Sharks are delighted to extend our most-valued partnership with Durban Tourism for a further three years,” reported Novashi Chetty, Public Relations Manager for The Sharks. “As two iconic Durban brands, we share similar values and a love for our City, and for showcasing our City to the world”.
T
he three-year partnership between eThekwini Municipality and the Sharks rugby franchise, which was first signed on 18 June 2015, set out to open up the playing field for tourism in exciting ways. “Our initial partnership generated much success through the introduction of the Township Tour, which saw the communities of Umlazi, Clermont and KwaMashu host top level rugby at their doorstep. Apart from this the Cell C Sharks played their official pre-season match in Umlazi against the Cheetahs, with a host of top stars on display”. Sharks PR Manager, Novashi Chetty went on to explain how these communities got to interact with the players, and how many children were able to identify with them and embrace them as role models.
Sporting the Durban logo on their jerseys, The Sharks will continue to run onto the field as ambassadors for Durban. While travelling locally and abroad, they promote the city as not as the Home City of The Sharks, but also as a world-class tourism destination as ‘the warmest place to be’. In terms of the agreement, Durban will continue to receive coverage on the various platforms that showcase the Sharks brand, including stadium branding, television coverage, e.g. SuperSport, print media, and the Sharks Magazine and digital media, driven by a highly successful website. The Sharks also have an ever-growing social media reach, with a large portion of these followers living outside of Durban. Currently, their following includes 469 679 on Facebook, 172 000 on Twitter and 663 000 on Instagram. “Durban Tourism continues to do some fantastic work to market our City’s world class attractions and proudly KZN heritage. Together with the Cell C Sharks global reach, through the tournaments we participate in and the support base we have, we can aid Durban Tourism’s marketing efforts by reaching a wider audience, both nationally and internationally”, said Chetty. “Much has been done, but there is a lot more that we can do together, through a shared vision and a pioneering spirit. We look forward to the next three years with much excitement”. ©The Sharks

WINNING YEAR FOR
SUNCOAST
“2017 has been an award-winning year for us and it’s not over yet!” says Louise Howell, Marketing Manager at Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World.
T
he awards range from recognition for contributions in the community to topping popularity polls by readers of one of Durban’s daily newspapers. In Women’s Month (August), Suncoast scooped the Corporate Citizenship Award, sponsored by British American Tobacco, at the 14th edition of the prestigious Standard Bank Top Women Awards held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. The Corporate Citizenship Award acknowledges the role of business in improving the communities in which they operate and the positive impact on quality of life, economic prosperity or regeneration through direct investment, pro bono work or employee-led initiatives. The award recognised the ongoing contribution that Suncoast makes to the community of Chesterville via its partnership with Vukukhanye (an NPO operating in the area). Vukukhanye was formed in 2001 and offers essential community services in the form of children’s foster homes, an Educare centre, bursary projects, health and welfare services, as well as support for community-based organisations and schools. Suncoast has been collaborating with the NPO since 2009, providing financial support and regular participation from Suncoast staff on various community projects. “It was extremely gratifying receiving the Corporate Citizenship 30 | Durban Routes - Lifestyle
Award, as it validates the culture that the Tsogo Group has instilled in all their properties,” says Howell. “Partnering with Vukukhanye and the CEO, Dr Anthony van der Meulen, allows us to practise the values of Teamwork, Service, Opportunity, Growth and Ownership and make a positive difference in other people’s lives.” Another award won during the year is the PMR Awards, where Suncoast won a Golden Award (4.2 out of 5) in the category of Casino Executive Lifestyle. Suncoast also topped a popularity poll from Durban readers when it was recently voted the Best Casino in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in the 2017 Daily News Your Choice Awards for the 14th year running. “Being voted the Best Casino in KZN for 14 consecutive years is a record that Suncoast is extremely proud of,” adds Howell. “It also gives our staff the recognition they deserve. Suncoast firmly believes that keeping staff members motivated and happy are the keys to great customer service. The award confirms that our guests notice and appreciate our efforts!” Individual employees have also been excelling in their departments. Croupier Cheszine Muller was named first runner-up in the 2017 Tsogo Sun National Dealer of the Year Championships at Montecasino, Johannesburg in September. www.durbanroutes.co.za

Muller was one of 18 finalists and was joined in the top five by fellow Suncoast colleague, Mbuso Dube (who placed fourth). The table dealers were judged on various criteria in the preliminary rounds of the competition, including knowledge, dealing skills and customer service standards. Once through to the final round, they were assessed on technical skills and other aspects of the dealing cycle in American Roulette and Blackjack. The winner was announced after the final five had to answer judges’ questions at the prizewinning dinner. “Taking part in the Championships was so much fun and not difficult at all because the tasks involved what I do every day,” said 29-year-old Muller, who has been a croupier at Suncoast for the past three years. Meanwhile, finalists Devina Dawkinun and Lebo Mohoko are anxiously awaiting the outcome of their respective competitions. Dawkinun (founder of the Gemkids Catch-up Programme and manager of Suncoast’s Day Care Centre) is one of the top five in the 2017 Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur of the Year Award, a competition for entrepreneurs and alumni benefiting from the Tsogo Sun Entrepreneurs development programme. The Day Care manager at Suncoast was selected as a finalist from 200 fellow entrepreneurs and will be attending a National Showcase and Conference at the Southern Sun in Pretoria at the end of October, where the Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur of the Year will be announced. “I feel proud to be acknowledged by Tsogo Sun,” says Dawkinun. “All too

often entrepreneurs go unrecognised. The nomination has meant the world to me and it would be that much more special if I was to win.” The Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur for 2017 will receive R50 000 from Tsogo Sun, a bursary valued at R30 000 from Tsheto Leadership Academy and will be ambassador for Tsogo Sun Entrepreneurs for the next year. Mohoko (barista at Café Vigour and KZN winner of the 2017 Tsogo Sun – Avanti Coffee National Barista Competition) is eagerly anticipating the national battle of the baristas in Gauteng in November. His expert coffeemaking skills saw him win the regional round earlier this year. “Coffee is my passion and, although I am nervous and excited about the Gauteng finals, I hope to make Café Vigour and Suncoast proud by bringing the National Barista Champion title home to Durban,” said the popular barista. “We are eagerly awaiting the judges’ decisions in these two competitions and hope that Devina and Lebo will come out tops,” said Howell. “The accomplishments of the year have made all the hard work worthwhile and motivated everyone to aim for more success in 2018. The public’s support also plays a large part in Suncoast’s success, for which we are very grateful.” For further information, visit suncoastcasino.co.za.
