Fringed with palm trees, meandering walkways and warm waves, Durban has always been synonymous with family holidays and long, lazy days spent soaking up the sunshine. But dynamic Durban is much more than a leisure destination and ‘a pretty face’; this gem of a city has many facets, each radiating its own unique brilliance. This past year has seen Durban shine on many fronts, with the city being awarded accolades in several arenas.

n the literary front, Durban has been recognised as a UNESCO World City of Literature (2018) – a first not only for South Africa, but for the African continent. Home to festivals like Poetry Africa and Time of the Writer, the city’s literary scene continues to nurture new talent and nourish seasoned literature lovers. The Articulate Africa Book Fair, which formed part of the Essence Festival, is a much-anticipated new addition (edition) to our already impressive library of events. Having established a reputation of excellence as a business destination, local stakeholders in this arena have also been recognised: the Durban International Convention Centre scooped up the title of Africa’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre 2017 and Hilton Durban was chosen as South Africa’s Leading Business Hotel 2017. Condé Nast Traveller listed the Moses Mabhida Stadium as one of South Africa’s 20 most beautiful places to visit. The Stadium’s architecture is magnificent in scale and design, making it a popular subject for photographers from around the globe. Its iconic centre arch – Africa’s very own Arc de Triomphe, was inspired by the ‘Y’ shape of the South African flag, and houses a Skycar that offers exhilarating and panoramic views of the city and Indian Ocean. NON-STOP DURBAN TO LONDON! London and the UK is set to get even closer with the start of British Airways’ new direct service from Durban.

rom October 30, the airline’s customers will be able to visit the exciting capital with its amazing sights, culture and history with three direct flights a week from Durban to London Heathrow Terminal 5. The service will be the only non-stop link between Durban and London, and flights will be operated by the airline’s newest fleet of aircraft, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Designed to enhance customer wellbeing, the new fuelefficient aircraft boasts smooth ride technology, which minimises the effects of turbulence and creates a more comfortable trip. Lower pressurisation results in cabin air that is less dry, reducing the effects of jet lag. A wide choice of on-demand films, as well as television and audio programmes are available for viewing on each customer’s personal flat screen. Comfortable ergonomically-designed seats, complimentary meals and a full bar service will also be available on board. The timetable will have an evening arrival into Heathrow and an early morning arrival into Durban.

Once he qualified, he entered the advertising and online gaming industries, where he worked as a designer, and eventually art director, for 16 years. His passion for pics and pixels eventually led him to launch Justin Klusener Photography, and in 2011 he moved back to the South Coast to set up a base there. Bio-geographically, KwaZulu Natal consists of three distinct and unique sections: the North, Central and South Coasts, all of which exhibit rich tropical biodiversity, thanks to one of the earth’s largest and fastest-moving currents - the Agulhas. Stretching from Kosi Bay to Richards Bay, the North Coast is characterised by the Sodwana Bay National Park and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in St Lucia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the country’s third largest protected area. Spanning from Richards Bay to Durban, the Central Coast features a much wider continental shelf, and vast stretches of sandy beaches. The South Coast area from Durban to the Mtamvuna Estuary also boasts a wealth of golden sand beaches, although these are separated by many rivers and rocky points and shores. The Aliwal Shoal and the breath-taking natural spectacle of the Sardine Run further attest to the area’s rich and diverse marine life.

Natal accounts for almost one quarter of this. South Africa’s second most populous province features 580km of scenic tropical marine environments sandwiched between Kosi Bay and the Mozambique border to the north, and the Mtamvuna Estuary and the Eastern Cape border to the south. The coast is as sensitive as it is spectacular, and local conservation group Coastwatch KZN are at the forefront of efforts to protect and conserve it for present and future generations.

ourism has long been a mainstay of the national economy, with KwaZulu-Natal a firm favourite for local and international visitors, thanks to its warm climate and splendid beaches. Recognising the need to ensure the continued protection and sustainable management of the province’s natural coastal and offshore marine resources, Coastwatch KZN was formed in 1997 by a group of concerned conservationists with this exact aim in mind. This Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) is now celebrating its milestone 20th year of tireless work in 2017, having a far-reaching influence over both the high level of government policy-making, and the grassroots education and empowerment of local communities throughout KwaZulu Natal’s coastal regions. Coastwatch KZN itself forms part of WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa), an environmental organisation tasked with initiating and supporting high impact and sustainable conservation projects, a leading implementer of initiatives of this kind.

Threats to KwaZulu-Natal’s coastal environment: Threats to South Africa’s and KwaZulu-Natal’s rich and biodiverse coastal environment come in many different forms. Residential and industrial development and the resultant destruction of ecosystems and habitat loss, as well as the mismanagement of natural resources, pollution and climate change, are all factors that put the integrity of the environment at risk.

The role of Coastwatch KZN in sustaining coastal and marine ecosystems: The organisation’s make-up of dedicated, experienced and expert individuals who share a passion for the coast and the marine environment has resulted in it being an effective instrument in achieving the long-term protection and sustainable management and use of the province’s natural resources.

With the assistance of the general public and local communities, who play an important role as the eyes and ears of the organisation, as well as almost two decades of interaction with relevant government departments, Coastwatch KZN is now viewed as an essential Interested and Affected Party (IAP) during the various processes affecting the health of the coastal environment. As a result, it contributes regularly to the development of a wide range of policies, white papers and bills, including the Integrated Coastal Management Bill, the revised Natal Sharks Board Bill, the National Aquaculture Strategy, the Waste Bill and the National Environmental Management Act. With the help and participation of conscientious members of the public, Coastwatch KZN has, since 2006, had a central role to play in managing and ensuring that the rapid development of the province’s coastal areas have been done responsibly and with due regard to their natural integrity and sustainability. Accordingly, the organisation has commented on more than 100 Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) or Record of Decisions (ROD), projects, ranging from single houses to small craft harbours, golfing estates and sewage plants.

Coastwatch KZN and WESSA: Although a separate entity, with its own constitution and identity, Coastwatch KZN is guided by the policies and practices of WESSA. As such it is ideally placed and suitably empowered to make real progress in working towards meaningful and lasting capacity building, empowering individuals, communities and the government to make sustainable lifestyle and environmental management choices. Significantly, Coastwatch KZN conducts independent fundraising under its own name, in line with its status as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO), and its efforts are driven largely by community membership and funding. Dr Judy Mann, former Chairman of Coastwatch and currently a Conservation Strategist and Head of Research at SAAMBR (South African

Association of Marine Biology Research), said that “the long-term health and beauty of South Africa’s coastal and marine environments are under threat from a multitude of sources. With the help of the public in recognising these issues, and our partnership with WESSA in combatting them, Coastwatch KZN is working to protect our province’s rich natural heritage and high biodiversity. Change does not occur overnight or without massive and welldirected effort, which is why we rely heavily on public participation in terms of both funding and membership. The culmination of the efforts of all who have contributed to Coastwatch KZN over the last two decades are both tangible and immensely rewarding, and we hope that the progress we have made only gains momentum as we look to forge ahead in our quest to create a mutually symbiotic and sustainable relationship between humanity and the environment”.

BE AN ECO-SAVVY TRAVELLER

TURN OVER A GREEN LEAF WITH THESE TRAVEL TIPS!

Becoming an eco-savvy traveller will not only help you to reduce your carbon footprint; it may save you money, and if properly applied, the core principles of ecotourism can stimulate financial growth in developing economies.

ravelling to your holiday destination is without a doubt the ‘Bigfoot’ of carbon emissions, followed by other forms of transport and a host of modern lifestyle practices. (Note: Air travel should soon be much greener with the development of sustainable aviation biofuel, which is already being produced in South Africa and the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) aiming to reduce energy demand from the national grid and harnessing solar power is part of its vision for 2025 to 2030). If you are an intrepid tourist, the negative impact of traveling can’t be avoided, but there are effective ways to tip the scale in the other direction, offsetting your carbon emissions and thus neutralising your footprint. The Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) initiative, for instance, makes use of your donation to plant fruit and indigenous trees in schools, clinics and impoverished areas. Start by calculating your carbon footprint by using the carbon calculator on the FTFA website (see “Resources” on page 20). There are many other ways in which you can shrink your carbon footprint. Opt for a hotel that makes use of solar energy and/or promotes recycling, use public transport or walk instead of driving. Whether you are taking baby steps or bounding ahead as an eco-warrior on a green mission, it starts with an attitude. Why not decide today to help make the grass greener, proverbially-speaking, wherever you may be? Another great green initiative, the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI), empowers diners to check whether the ‘catch of the day’ on the menu is on the endangered list or not. Text your choice to the cell number below (see ‘Resources’ on page 20) and within minutes you will know whether the fish you are eyeing on the menu is a responsible choice or not. See the SASSI colour chart on the following page or download the App to become a greener diner today.

Become eco-savvy today with this easy list: 1. LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD By packing lightweight clothing you can save on baggage fees and increase the plane’s fuel efficiency. Choose drip-dry fabrics to save on tumble-drying and ironing – this saves not only energy but time! 2. WAX WATER WISE Have shorter showers and don’t keep the tap running while you brush your teeth. Hang up your towels to re-use them for a few days. Avoid using hotel laundries as they wash guests’ clothes separately, even if there are only a few items – this practise wastes a lot of water and energy. 3. BE BRIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO LIGHTS Save energy by switching off the lights, air conditioner and other electronics before leaving your hotel room.

4. REDUCE/REUSE/RECYCLE Ditch using disposable products. Use alternatives to plastic razors and throw-away cleansing wipes. Use a refillable BPA-free water bottle, hold onto your trash for recycling and ask your hotel concierge where you can find the nearest recycling depot. 5. OPT FOR ORGANIC Use eco-friendly toiletries and detergents. These are not only kinder to the environment, but much gentler on your skin/less abrasive to surfaces. 6. BE PICKY ABOUT PACKAGING Pick paper over plastic and polystyrene. Note the difference between recycled and recyclable material. The latter means that it can be recycled, whereas the former indicates that the packaging has been recycled. Brush up on your knowledge of green initiatives and logos. 7. LEARN TO LOVE LOCAL Imported produce has a much greater impact on the environment, so make an effort to support local producers and manufacturers where possible. Seek out local artists and crafters to buy gifts and souvenirs. This also stimulates the local economy. 8. LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS (NOT OF THE CARBON VARIETY) Resist the urge to pick flowers or damage native flora. Take a bag along for rubbish and why not collect litter along your journey. This also sets a great example for the younger generation, so your act of green will have a ripple effect. 9. BE TRANSFORMED FROM A TOURIST TO A TRAVELLER Take time to immerse yourself in local music, art and cuisine. Embrace the cultural differences that make your destination unique. Chat to the locals and learn from them, rather than spending all your time in malls. 10. SLOW DOWN Drive slower. It is safer, you will save on fuel (carbon emissions), and you will get to enjoy the scenery more. 11. PASS ON THE PAPER When shopping, opt to have your receipt emailed to you. Choose electronic billing and pay online when possible. Yes, it does use electricity but the impact is far less damaging than the cutting down of trees for the production of paper. 12. BECOME A SAVVY SHOPPER Read labels! Do not buy products made from endangered species, nonsustainable hardwoods, shells, corals or ancient artefacts. Even if it is permissible to buy them, ask yourself: “Does it come from a sustainable source?” Buy curios and gifts made from recycled materials.

Shisanyama CELEBRATE SUMMER WITH SIZZLING

It is summertime in Durban and there is a buzzword on locals’ lips – one that is as sizzling as a local summer. Derived from the Zulu words for ‘hot’ (shisa) and ‘meat’ (nyama), Shisanyama is far more than meat grilled over an open flame. It is an authentic celebration of Kasi (township) life, and is best enjoyed in the company of friends and family. The perfect Shisanyama should be served with generous helpings of conversation, laughter and the clanking of glasses – as you and your friends toast to the winding down of a busy year and share your dreams and aspirations for the one ahead. Top it off with some great music and you have the recipe for an unforgettable Shisanyama experience.

The prepared meat is served in platters, to share from, along with pap (refined maizemeal porridge, similar perhaps to polenta) and traditional sheba (a delicious tomato and onion accompaniment (there are many versions of this sauce, which is sometimes spiked with fresh chilli to add even more ‘shisa’ to the Shisanyama experience). Other popular side dishes include chakalaka (a

spicy vegetable relish), dombolo (dumplings) bread and coleslaw. There are a number of fashionable restaurants and lounges in and around Durban, each offering a unique spin on the Shisanyama experience. You can opt for a traditional fireside meal, or a more sophisticated affair, if you are in the mood to dress up and dazzle. Many of these spots are famous not only for their excellent flamed-grilled fare, but for the live music and entertainment they offer.

Durban’s golden beaches, washed by the warm Indian Ocean, are an idyllic summer playground. Have fun, but remember to exercise caution. Observe beach safety rules and cooperate with the lifeguards on duty. Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) trains more than 2000 lifeguards every year! In

association with 80 affiliated clubs, the organisation maintains a presence throughout SA. LSA is a registered member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the Department of of Sports and Recreation (SRSA). They are also long-standing members of the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS), Commonwealth Lifesaving and the Royal Lifesaving Society. Lifesaving SA’s core business however, is to provide a voluntary lifeguard service that benefits all communities and the country at large. They have around 5500 members who perform voluntary lifeguard duties operating at 50 coastal (Surf) clubs and some 30 inland (Stillwater) clubs across South Africa. Nippers - lifeguards of tomorrow A “Nipper” is a young member of the lifesaving movement who is between 8 and 14 years old. LSA’s Nippers are an important part of the organization, with clubs throughout SA offering training in surf and pool safety. On completion of the course, Nippers can progress to the Intermediate and Advanced levels. Once they have completed all three courses, at the age of 15 they can train to become a Junior Lifeguard. Once the member turns the age of 16, they commence training to achieve full Lifeguard status. LSA also has a long-standing relationship with the South African Police Services, providing Lifesaving training to SAPS members and is very active in developing lifesaving in the Wild Coast (former Transkei).

Unravelling the Florida Rd character After more than 18 months of research, surveys, workshops, meetings, participation processes and public engagements, a new Florida Rd brand is ready to emerge, and with it the action plan and interventions needed to help the road reach its full potential as a go-to-place for Durban’s locals and visitors alike. With an authentically urban beat interwoven with iconic snippets of history, both finding their place along a busy thoroughfare, Florida Road is uniquely Durban. Yet despite its history and its people, despite its restaurants, galleries, and bars, by 2013 Florida Road had begun to slide into urban decay, slowly losing its’ reputation as one of the city’s trendiest streets. Thankfully, through a collective urban management intervention that saw the creation of the Florida Rd Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) in late 2013, safety, attention and care have been restored, and Florida Rd is once again poised for change with an inclusive and long-term identity. Initiated in June 2016 by a collective of the Florida Rd UIP and the Ethekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Tourism departments, Florida Rd took its first steps on a journey of discovering its brand identity. This long and inclusive process looked to uncover the road’s true character, understanding who it is and who it isn’t, how it wants its personality to be communicated and the image it would like to shake off.

The two lenses of Florida Rd This journey exposed a Florida Rd vision of the future with the capacity to open and connect communities and entrepreneurs from across the corners of the City, allowing platforms to do business, play and prosper. Its ability to provide a space for the coming together of culture, styles, ages and demographics is key to the character of this unique place, one that is to be nurtured and grown within the Durban mix. This vision and the development approach by the Florida Rd UIP team, place-making committee, City leaders and private sector collaborators focuses on stakeholder needs and is developed into detailed implementation plans to enable Florida Rd to develop and directly support the City’s vision of being “The most liveable City in Africa” not by 2030 but right now!

How will this be delivered? Through the inter-connected lenses of place-making and urban planning. The place-making and branding of Florida Rd focuses on building the Florida Rd community by interlinking public and private spaces in terms of what they offer and how they offer it. This plan looks at what the product, service and public open space mix should look like and what quality standards will be set to uphold them? It also talks to the idea of value, and understanding what benefits Florida Rd needs to provide to its stakeholders and how the place can go about fulfilling these needs. This brand lens is summed up by the new Florida Rd logo, the delicious and gritty x-factor that is Florida Rd. This logo forms part of a branding toolkit for how business, communities and the drivers of the road use this brand and position Florida Rd – including a new brand for the Florida Rd UIP. The Florida Rd UIP, place-making committee and city structures are working on a Florida Rd Urban Development Framework, an effort that combines urban architecture, planning, transport and engineering designs with the findings of the DNA process. In its basic form, this framework looks at

optimizing the street, its public open space and urban character, and the pavements, parks and places in between, for human interaction. In addition to this are detailed design concepts around parking provision, impact on surrounding roads, overall traffic flow etc.

develops free area app Continuing its efforts to enhance the user experience of this unique place, Florida Rd has developed an area APP design as a single, inclusive source of information on Florida Rd for

Do you know where the best place for late night dining is or where to get your nails done? How about the number for the UIP 24/7 hotline number, or the latest happenings on the road? While a few seconds on a search engine will give you reams of information about Florida Rd, what seems to be lacking is a central hub of information that is more than a business directory but provides ‘insider-info’ on the place and keeps you connected to those driving its activities. Responding to this need and understanding that an info source must be immediately available, Florida Rd has developed an area APP positioned as the single ‘go-to-point’ for all things Florida Rd. A tool used to create a sense of place in Florida Rd, the APP is a collaboration between the Florida Rd Place-Making Committee (a subcommittee of the Florida Rd UIP), placemaking company UrbanPLACES and APP development company APP Fab. “The APP is aimed at anyone from the Durban local looking for a night out, or a day visitor wanting to know where to go for a family lunch, to an employee looking for the local post office number or a tourist looking for accommodation, and so we have grouped similar information together making it easier for people to access exactly what the are looking for,” said Cara Reilly of UrbanPLACES. Comprehensive and user-friendly, the APP uses bold icons to highlight each section, with content including things like: • Local knowledge from maps and the history of Florida Rd to information on the local clinic, library and much more is contained in the Area Info section, which is constantly refined and updated. • A one-touch-call to the 24/7 UIP Hotline Number as well as the option to Report A Fault, by capturing an image and sending an alert an anything from street lights out, to lost pets, directly to the UIP. • A comprehensive A-Z that lists every business located on Florida Rd (and within the immediate boundaries) at no charge with a click-to-call phone number for easy connection • The Eat, Shop, Stay and Property categories feature key offerings in the area and allow for local businesses to upgrade their listing to include images, web and social media links and a more detail on what they offer. • A News section that links through the latest news on Florida Rd as hosted on the UIP website • An Events section with line-up of activities on Florida Rd, as hosted on the UIP website, as well as the option of checking out what is happening in the whole of Durban.

A Contacts button that users with details of a range of important contacts, from the UIP to emergency and municipal contacts. Understanding that Florida Rd is part of the incredible city of Durban, and the province of KZN, the APP has a More Durbs section, which using categorized listings gives the user info on everything from Township Tours to Local Markets and everything in between. The APP can send push notifications and a related image to all users, perfect for communicating everything from water shut downs to the opening of a new restaurant.

Additional features of the APP include a link to a stunning video that captures the essence of Florida Rd; a link to the UIP website; a developing coupon section, and a link to a form for businesses to request a listing or an upgrade. But why the need for an APP when Florida Rd has a website and social media pages? According to international statistics portal Statista, some 2.3 billion people worldwide own a smartphone, with South Africa accounting for 16.1 million of those users. And for most of those people their Smartphones have become an inseparable part of their daily lives – almost a physical appendage from the moment the phone alarm goes off in the morning! In this way, providing simple access to information via mobile phone is becoming more of a necessity than a nice to have, with a recent Forbes article going as far as saying that “…a mobile app is a standard component of any business in the future.” While businesses in Florida Rd (and the immediate surrounds) are listed FREE under the A-Z, and thus gain a level of exposure, the APP allows for paid-for upgraded listings, which are housed in the highlighted Eat, Shop, Stay and Property sections, and give businesses the opportunity to show more about what they offer. Asked if all the bases were covered, Florida Rd Place-Making Committee Chair Mike Holland noted that the team had been working on the APP for some months now but that once in use, they would look at any necessary updates to improve functionality. “From creating the structure of the APP, to loading relevant content, we have tried to be as comprehensive and inclusive as possible, but that is not to say that we haven’t missed anything or anyone, so please if you have a business or service located on, or immediately surrounding, Florida Rd and you are not listed on the APP you must let us know,” he said.

Set between the Umgeni River mouth and Umhlanga Durban North is an affluent suburb and is close to central Durban and Umhlanga’s business parks, and boasts comfortable accommodation establishments that serve as an ideal base for business travellers. A wide range of eating and drinking establishments, from bistros to cocktail bars to boutique family restaurants, make Swapo Road and MacKeurtan Avenue great places to relax and meet people, while La Lucia Mall is a lovely suburban mall with a relaxed atmosphere and big brand stores. The Umgeni River Bird Park is home to over 200 species of endangered, indigenous and exotic birds. The Bird Show is the top attraction where visitors can witness owls, macaws, kookaburras, toucans, vultures and many other species as they demonstrate what they would normally do in the wild. Shows are at 11am and 2pm every day, weather permitting. Despite Umhlanga’s growth boom in the last twenty years, it’s still home to some pristine natural areas. There is a well-marked path that winds through pretty coastal forest on boardwalks that cross the Ohlange River on its way to the lagoon, buttressed by dunes. Benches and picnic spots are dotted throughout, and you can follow the trail to reach the beach and the lagoon, and the remains of a Stone Age seashell midden can also be found to the north of the lagoon. The adjacent Hawaan Forest Reserve is inland of Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. This indigenous woodland has remained in its natural state for centuries, and is characterised by important species of trees with tropical attributes, and many small animals. A booming holiday coastline Over the years, Umhlanga has become the most sought after holiday and business destination in South Africa. It boasts some of the most exclusive hotels, self-catering apartments, sophisticated guesthouses and a worldclass beachfront promenade that spans the entire length of this resort paradise. The promenade is a favourite for walkers and runners, and is dotted with restaurants, takeaways, ablution facilities and ice cream sellers. The boat launch site at Granny’s Pool adjacent to the lifesavers’ clubhouse allows visitors to get out onto the water to fish from fishing charter boats. To the north, the seaside village of Umdloti is set against green hills and lush vegetation. It has some of the best beaches in the area, with a rockenclosed tidal pool and a wide lagoon. and safe swimming. There are a few good dive spots right off Umhlanga, and the best diving conditions are to be found in the winter months. The T-Barge, Lighthouse Reef, the Trawler of Fontao and Dolphin Reef attract everything from moray eels to tropical fish. One of the best snorkelling spots in the area is at the northern end of Umdloti’s Beach Road. A line of rocks encloses an enormous tidal pool, home to large cowries, crayfish and a variety of tropical fish.

Dusi Canoe Marathon Inanda Dam is the venue for one of the world’s most gruelling sporting events, the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Starting in Pietermaritzburg, contestants must paddle and run for three days along the Umsindusi and Umgeni rivers until they reach the sea in Durban. This tough event is held every February and attracts competitors from around the world to take on the might of the Valley of 1000 Hills. It was founded in 1951, and covers roughly 120km. It is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, and one of the world’s most popular river marathons, attracting between 1 600 and 2 000 paddlers each year.
