Tourists from all over the world have been coming to Durban for more than half a century, attracted mainly by the City’s famous beaches and the all year-round sunshine. But once they arrive here, they soon discover that this city has a lot more than beautiful, golden beaches to offer.

I

t is a centre of world-class sport and hosts major international events. It is a shoppers’ paradise with sophisticated shopping malls and precincts, craft markets and street bazaars. It is an entertainment and hospitality centre offering a wide range of accommodation from swish beachfront hotels to themed lodges, guesthouses, self-catering apartments and homely B&Bs. It is also a bustling commercial and manufacturing centre connected to the business capitals of the world, and is built around one of the busiest ports in Africa. Durban’s people are friendly and laid-back, and reflect a rich cultural diversity that includes African, Eastern and Western influences. Perhaps it’s this blend of culture, art and environment that makes Durban so unique. There’s nowhere else quite like it. There is an abundance of breathtaking scenery just beyond the City. To the north lies the bustling coastal town of Umhlanga, packed with hotels, restaurants and beautiful beaches. To the south is the Sapphire Coast, an endless stretch of sub-tropical paradise dotted with holiday towns. To the west lies the verdant Valley of 1000 Hills with its nature reserves and cultural villages. A little further afield, the Big Five game reserves are just a few hours’ drive away, while further west the mighty uKhahlamba Drakenberg Park – a World Heritage Site – beckons. Durban is a modern African city that has opened its arms to visitors from around the globe. Tourism has played a major role in the growth of the city for decades, and consequently, there is a well developed hospitality infrastructure that is dedicated to exceeding visitors’ expectations. The following publication highlights all the top officially recommended attractions in the city and surrounding regions, from its natural beauty, historical and cultural heritage, to all the top recommended places to see, stay, play, eat and meet the locals.

Capturing the

PERFECT SHOT

with Justin Klusener

Justin goes to great lengths to either wait for the right light, or create it, for that perfect shot! Justin’s photographic genius is featured in this issue, so do look out for his pics! After spending an idyllic childhood on the South Coast, Durban-born Justin Klusener returned to the city to pursue his studies in the field of graphic design. Once he qualified, he entered the advertising and online gaming industries where he worked as a designer and eventually art director for 16 years. His passion for pics and pixels eventually led him to launch Justin Klusener Photography, and in 2011 he moved back to the South Coast to set up a base there. He recently co-founded The Image Mill Studio and Photographic Gallery, which is situated at Spiller’s Wharf on the picture-perfect banks of the Umzimkhulu River. Even though Justin specialises in commercial events, sports and property/ accommodation photography, he offers an impressive range of photographic services, including events, schools, food, merchandise and family shoots and portraits. His passion for photographing nature, wildlife and surfing often takes him to remote and fascinating parts of Southern Africa. Although Justin loves to travel, he admits that KZN has captured his heart.

“Nothing beats a KZN summer! The weather is just perfect – great evenings and hot days, with little or no wind. KZN has it all: beaches, mountains and beautiful game reserves, all within a half day’s drive from each other – a photographer’s dream!” 082 441 9195

Wonderful

inner Ant Stott w n o th ra a M e o an multiple Dusi C h it w N Z K d n a Surfing Durban Ant Stott in action – throwing some spray in a smooth cutback.

Durban and the surrounding KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastline is known worldwide for its warm Indian Ocean waters that make salt water activities a pleasure to partake in all year round. This coupled with its never-ending supply of great waves and beautiful beaches, highlighted in the sections that follow as well as on our website www.durbanroutes.co.za, makes it one of the most popular surfing destinations in the world.

N

early everyone is familiar with the sport of surfing, the most popular being the traditional ‘short board’ surfing that has put Durban on the international map with events like the Gunston 500, Ocean Africa and Mr Price Pro events – now the Ballito Pro – which started way back in the late sixties. Taking the KZN shores by storm is a new style of surfing called waveskiing. The sport actually started in the 70s and reached its peak in the 80s before slowly dwindling off again, but Durban gained huge renewed waveski popularity worldwide when the 2014 World Waveski Titles were hosted right here in Durban. Competitors from around the world were blown away by our great waves, warm water, fantastic promenade, thrilling game reserves and beautiful mountains, all of which can be found right here in Durban and surrounding KZN – close to King Shaka International Airport. More recently, waveski surfing has gained new momentum with local Durban manufacturers injecting new life into the rapidly growing wave sport. A waveski is very similar to a surfboard in shape and size, the major difference being that the waveski surfer sits on the board and uses a double-sided paddle to propel the craft forwards. By having the extra

10

paddle power, the rider is able to paddle out through the breaking waves a lot more quickly than traditional surfers, who need to lie down on their boards on their stomachs, with the use of only their hands to paddle them forwards. Another massive advantage for the waveski surfer is that by using the paddle, they have the ability to catch a wave far easier than the surfers who don’t have paddles. Durban is the proud home of one of the world’s most popular waveski manufacturers – MACSKI – which was founded by John Macleod in 1979 and subsequently purchased by past multiple Dusi Canoe Marathon winner, Ant Stott, who moved the factory to Durban in 2014. The boards are all built locally in Durban and have gained massive popularity around the world. MACSKI is now one of the world’s leading waveski brands and its products are shipped to all corners of the globe. Ant maintains that “the popularity of Stand Up Paddling, or SUP surfing as it has become to be known, has also helped massively to bring new numbers to waveskiing. SUPing can be a bit awkward as your centre of gravity is so high while you attempt to stand up on your board paddling on one side at a time. Paddling out through the waves in order to reach the backline as well as negotiating the choppy waters can be a bit of a challenge for the unskilled SUP surfer. The obvious and natural progression is to lower the centre of gravity to the seated position while paddling. This is what makes the sport of waveskiing far more accessible to the first-timer who just wants to get out there and experience the thrill of the waves. Almost anyone can sit and paddle – meaning that wave riding becomes something that nearly everyone can do!” Durban and it’s bay is the perfect place to learn as you can choose a beach according to your ability. “Our bigger waves generally come from the south, which means that Durban’s beaches are more protected from big waves the further south you go as a result of being protected by the harbour wall on the southern end of the bay. As your confidence on a waveski grows, you can move along to the more northern beaches where

Almost anyone can sit and paddle – meaning that wave riding becomes something that nearly everyone can do! the waves are stronger, faster, bigger and a bit more exhilarating!” said Ant. “Durban and its many piers also make it great for spectators and photographers to get right up close and personal with the action.” Ant concludes by stating that “a trend that is becoming far more popular these days is for international waveski customers to order their custom boards from MACSKI and then fly over to South Africa to collect them in person. Making use of their stronger foreign currencies, they are able to stretch out their visits to KwaZulu-Natal and experience a world-class surfing holiday for far longer than they could in most other surfing locations, while at the same time being able to explore all the many attractions up north, down south and further west. It just makes so much sense for them to come and visit Durban and have a taste of the real African waveski surfing experience!” For anyone wishing to gain more information on waveski surfing, or where to canoe throughout KZN for that matter, contact Ant Stott, Macski Custom Waveskis on +27 580 4696.

Sizzling Shisanyama! Derived from the Zulu words for ‘hot’ (shisa) and ‘meat’ (nyama), Shisanyama is far more than meat grilled over an open flame. It is an authentic celebration of Kasi (township) life, and is best enjoyed in the company of friends and family. The perfect Shisanyama should be served with generous helpings of conversation, laughter and the clanking of glasses – as you and your friends toast to the winding down of a busy year and share your dreams and aspirations for the one ahead. Top it off with some great music and you have the recipe for an unforgettable Shisanyama experience.

P

art of the fun is selecting the meat cuts you wish to tuck into before they are spiced and braai’d over the open flames. The prepared meat is served in platters, to share from, along with pap (refined maizemeal porridge, similar perhaps to polenta) and traditional sheba (a delicious tomato and onion accompaniment (there are many versions of this sauce, which is sometimes spiked with fresh chilli to add even more ‘shisa’ to the Shisanyama experience). Other popular side dishes include chakalaka (a

spicy vegetable relish), dombolo (dumplings) bread and coleslaw. There are a number of fashionable restaurants and lounges in and around Durban, each offering a unique spin on the Shisanyama experience. You can opt for a traditional fireside meal, or a more sophisticated affair, if you are in the mood to dress up and dazzle. Many of these spots are famous not only for their excellent flamed-grilled fare, but for the live music and entertainment they offer.

Gavin Ferguson – Rocking Durban, KZN and South Africa Singer-songwriter Gavin Ferguson started playing guitar at the age of 16. His love for music was discovered in high school alongside his love for drama, for which he received full colours. Having performed in musicals and open mic nights at venues around KZN during his high school career, he has now built a strong local following and is currently expanding rapidly into the national music scene in SA. Gavin’s musical style is extremely versatile, incorporating soulful vocals and dabbling in genres ranging from pop to rock. His musical influences emanate from commercial pop, rock, jazz, light blues, RnB, dance, classical, indie and big band with a flair of southern gospel infused with old school classics, flamenco-style guitar and classical fingerpicking. After much turmoil between pursuing his career as an engineer or following his musical path, Gavin eventually decided to pursue music as a full-time career in 2013 – and has not looked back since. His first single, Friendzone, became somewhat of an underground anthem, eventually becoming the track that he was known for due to the raw quality and catchiness of the tune. It was Friendzone that initially caught the attention of Archie Majola from Midas Touch Records. Further to regularly performing, Gavin put his engineering expertise to work, building his own studio and later producing his second single titled Never Know. Singles that followed were Graffiti Blues, Rockets and then Eternal Sin, which was the single that cemented the relationship with Archie, who became Gavin’s full-time manager to guide him on the path of building a brand and moving to the next level in his musical journey. Eternal Sin enjoyed play-listing on East Coast Radio, Good Hope FM and RSG, among others, and his latest single Not Right has a strong pop element to it and is available on all streaming platforms. The music video for Not Right went viral almost instantly, securing over four thousand views within the first month. Not Right embodies a feel good vibe with a music video that caters to all demographics and is fun in all regards. When asked about his favourite venues throughout Durban and KZN, he is cheerful in saying that he enjoyed playing passionately at every dingy bar he could find in the early days before eventually branching out and performing at more prestigious venues such as the Oyster Box, Ballito Lifestyle Centre, Blue Waters Hotel, Katmandu Ballito, and the Hops Ballito – all venues Gavin feels should be commended for their support of local musicians. Gavin has also ventured into performing for private functions and public festivals such as Splashy Fen, Smoking Dragon, Lube and Tube, Biosphere,

16

White Mountain Festival, Pecanwood Oktoberfest and others – all of which have spurred an evolution in his music and brought great joy to both the music fans and Gavin himself – having shared the stage with and supported artists including, inter alia, Pascal and Pierce, Khan from The Parlotones, Short Straw, Locnville, Jeremy Loops, Mathew Mole, John Ellis from Tree 63, Majozi, December Streets and Crash Car Burn. Steve Graham – an international muso with firm local roots Steve Graham has been in the music business for more than 25 years and has written more songs than he can remember. As a young musician in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England, he learnt the art of entertaining through the world of rock music and was quickly signed by international Manager/Record Producer Chas Chandler, who was manager and record producer for Jimi Hendrix and Slade. Chas had been a top-selling artist in his own right with the sixties band The Animals. This collaboration proved to be invaluable to Steve as he learned his craft from a master. The Steve Graham Band was formed and went on to work with industry icons such as Sting and the Police, Bryan Adams, Tina Turner, Michael Macdonald, Alice Cooper, Jeff Wayne, Electric Light Orchestra, U2, Jools Holland, Rick Wakeman, Dire Straits, Marillion, Status Quo and many more. After 18 years of working on the stadium circuit, he became more involved with movie and documentary soundtrack composition. It was during this time that he started producing records for other artists and writing songs for new upcoming talent. In the early part of the 2000s, he was approached by record labels to ‘artist develop’ the new kids in the music business, which he still does today, and after setting up a music and film production company in Dubai, he has gone back to his passion for live performance and embracing the people who love to hear live music. Now based in Ballito, South Africa, he has resumed playing classic rock songs and well-known tunes. Steve is one of the best performers to come out of the UK and is now performing all over South Africa. His favourite venues include: ©Steve Graham

Alchemy now playing regularly at Pintos Restaurant, Kloof

ALCHEMY is a popular musical duo comprising Lance Goldman and John Chamier – two highly talented musicians that have been performing in and around Durban for many years. Essentially a two piece outfit, they have often performed as a five-piece band and recently did so at the Splashy Fen music festival and before that at the Durban International Blues Festival. In fact, over the years, the band has done each festival six times. Specialising in classics from the 70s and 80s, the ALCHEMY duo now have a regular gig every Saturday afternoon/evening at Pintos in Gillitts. The gig is structured around major sporting events, such as the recent Rugby World Cup, with the starting times dependent on when the events finish. In addition, every Sunday afternoon from 3pm until 6pm, Lance and John host various guests at Pintos for an acoustic afternoon – featuring some great upand-coming musos as a way to give back to the musical fraternity. So, if you’re looking for some great live music, get down to Pintos every Saturday and Sunday, grab a bite to eat from Pintos’ delicious menu and enjoy some cold ones and a great vibe. Pintos can be found at 6 Old Main Rd, Clifton Park, Gillitts. Tel: 031 764 6288 or call Lance 082 814 3709.

FOR THE BUSINESS TRAVELLER

“I

n recent years, there has been more emphasis placed on the need for businesses to improve their website and social media optimisation in order to take advantage of the ever-growing trend towards search engine optimisation.” So says David Fletcher, an SEO Consultant with GTEM. “It has been our mission to make sure our clients are found, and to do this, we need to make sure Google displays them on page #1 of their search results. The only way to do this is by giving the user/searcher a better experience. “It all starts with a problem or product need on the Internet. Then follows the ‘Google’ search – and the information returned will ultimately decide where the prospect goes next. To optimise your chances of being seen, a full ‘audit’ of your website is most probably needed. Then look at options to add automation – e.g. CRM systems (keeping records and making sure no prospects fall through the cracks by targeting customers with appropriate offers) as well as the use of email autoresponders. Automation techniques keep the prospects warm, clients happy and your visitors informed. “So what does all this mean? Why is this important? Consider the following research statistics: 81% of B2C shoppers conduct online research before they buy • 94% of B2B buyers conduct online research in the buying process • 60% begin by using a search engine to find the products they want • On average, consumers visit at least three online stores before purchasing • If you’re trying to drive in-store purchases, 74% of business buyers • conduct more than 50% of their research online The searcher is most likely doing this on their mobile device • “Banners outside your place of business or billboards are only seen by someone who is already there. The results from the Internet and mobile devices are rich with information to help a potential customer make a purchasing decision.

How do we solve this? “All search engines like Google look at a combination of factors, including: • Engagement – from other platforms and your own • Relevance – is your information useful, easy to navigate and logical? • Location – are your details correct? Are you near the searcher? • Social proof – satisfied customers and favourable reviews • Using search, map search, social media, citations, websites all combine to improve rankings “Other off-site activities will also ensure success. The challenges include: • Voice searches – words we type are different to words used when talking. Search engines respond to voice searches based on location. From your desktop, you could get a totally different result than from your mobile • Advertisers – search engines display the results (organic) below people that are advertising on those keywords. This tends to crowd the page • Size of devices – the screen will only have room to display three listings. People generally will take action on what they see on that first page “Update your website, optimise the content, fine-tune the layout and research correct keywords and key phrases. Make sure the code is set up properly as the content has to be user-friendly, logical and relevant. There should be no dead ends and ease of navigation. Register and list your business with Google and incorporate social media. Finally, branding images, templates and sales copies relating to your business and your offers must conform to guidelines. Images need to be condensed, tagged and optimised. Different social media platforms have varying template sizes. Depending on the type of business, the frequency of posts and the best days and times must be monitored. Posting and content is an ongoing process. The above is not an exhaustive list, but a summary of some of the key elements to a successful campaign.”

I

f you are travelling along Durban’s impressive promenade from the Durban Harbour entrance heading north (with the beaches on your right), here are some facts you may find interesting: • The section from the Durban harbour entrance to uShaka Marine World Beachfront promenade has recently received a R380m make-over – now making it the longest uninterrupted waterfront promenade in Africa – running for over 8kms from the Durban harbour entrance in the south to the Umgeni River mouth in the north. • This investment is anticipated to spark further investment in the area. Future plans include a ‘Durban Eye’ Ferris wheel, a mall adjacent to uShaka Marine World, and further mixed-use development. Durban just keeps on getting better and better. Speaking exclusively to Moneyweb recently, eThekwini Municipality’s Deputy City Manager for Economic Development and Planning Mr Philip Sithole stated that, “This is a major investment by the Municipality into Durban’s most important tourism asset. It is a catalytic project aimed at taking the beachfront to another level and unlocking investment both into the broader beachfront and especially in the Point Waterfront. We believe the promenade will become recognised internationally, together with the likes of Copacabana in Rio and Bondi Beach in Australia. Following the completion of the promenade extension by the City, the first phase of the new development plans for the Point Waterfront are anticipated to be launched next year. This will include a hotel tower and residential tower, in addition to a new shopping mall next to uShaka. Various investors are interested, but UEM Sunrise will be driving the process that will also include local partners.”

Florida Road vibe A day in Florida Road starts early, with the smell of brewing coffee and the buzz of people heading to their offices. Diners fill sidewalk cafés as lunchtime approaches and when the sun goes down, the street’s clubs and bars come into their own, earning Florida Road its reputation as one of Durban’s top destinations.

BRINGS THE VIBE Written by Cara Reilly

No matter where you track on the timeline, no matter the highs and lows of the journey, Florida Rd has always been steadfastly Durban. Now, thanks to the collective focus of passionate ‘doers’ in both the public and private sectors, Florida Rd has revealed its character and reclaimed its place as a key player in the future growth of Durban.

EXPERIENCE THE FLORIDA RD VIBE THAT…. Embraces local experiences and businesses. Serves different people and communities. Engages diverse needs and desires. Holds true in an ever changing local and global reality.

Unravelling the Florida Rd character After more than 18 months of research, surveys, workshops, meetings, participation processes and public engagements, a new Florida Rd brand emerged, and with it the action plan and interventions needed to help the road reach its full potential as a go-to-place for Durban’s locals and visitors alike. With an authentically urban beat interwoven with iconic snippets of history, both finding their place along a busy thoroughfare, Florida Road is uniquely Durban. Yet despite its history and its people, its restaurants, galleries, and bars, by 2013, Florida Road had begun to slide into urban decay, slowly losing its’ reputation as one of the city’s trendiest streets. Thankfully, through a collective urban management intervention that saw the creation of the Florida Rd Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) in late 2013, safety, attention and care have been restored, and Florida Rd is once again poised for change with an inclusive and long-term identity. Initiated in June 2016 by a collective of the Florida Rd UIP and the eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development and Tourism departments, Florida Rd took its first steps on a journey of discovering its brand identity. This long and inclusive process looked to uncover the road’s true character, understanding who it is and who it isn’t, how it wants its personality to be communicated and the image it would like to shake off.

33

The two lenses of Florida Rd This journey exposed a Florida Rd vision of the future with the capacity to open and connect communities and entrepreneurs from across the corners of the City, allowing platforms to do business, play and prosper. Its ability to provide a space for the coming together of culture, styles, ages and demographics is key to the character of this unique place, one that is to be nurtured and grown within the Durban mix. This vision and the development approach by the Florida Rd UIP team, place-making committee, City leaders and private sector collaborators focuses on stakeholder needs and is developed into detailed implementation plans to enable Florida Rd to develop and directly support the City’s vision of being ‘The most liveable City in Africa’ not by 2030 but right now!

How will this be delivered? Through the inter-connected lenses of place-making and urban planning. The place-making and branding of Florida Rd focuses on building the Florida Rd community by interlinking public and private spaces in terms of what they offer and how they offer it. This plan looks at what the product, service and public open space mix should look like and what quality standards will be set to uphold them. It also talks to the idea of value and understanding what benefits Florida Road needs to provide to its stakeholders and how the place can go about fulfilling these needs. This brand lens is summed up by the new Florida Rd logo, the delicious and gritty x-factor that is Florida Rd. This logo forms part of a branding toolkit for how business, communities and the drivers of the road use this brand and position Florida Rd – including a new brand for the Florida Rd UIP. The Florida Rd UIP, place-making committee and city structures have come up with a Florida Rd Urban Development Framework, an effort that combines urban architecture, planning, transport and engineering designs with the findings of the DNA process. In its basic form, this framework looks at optimising the street, its public open space and urban character, and the pavements, parks and places in between, for human interaction. In addition to this are frameworks for parking provision, consideration for the impact on surrounding roads, overall traffic flow, etc.

develops free area app Continuing its efforts to enhance the user experience of this unique place, Florida Rd developed an area APP design as a single, inclusive source of information on Florida Rd for

• •

residents, visitors, employees, Durban locals and tourists – and it is FREE to download from your APP store. Have you got Florida Rd knowledge at your fingertips? Do you know where the best place for late night dining is or where to get your nails done? How about the number for the UIP 24/7 hotline number, or the latest happenings on the road? While a few seconds on a search engine will give you reams of information about Florida Rd, what seems to be lacking is a central hub of information that is more than a business directory but provides ‘insider-info’ on the place and keeps you connected to those driving its activities. Responding to this need and understanding that an info source must be immediately available, Florida Rd developed an area APP positioned as the single ‘go-to-point’ for all things Florida Rd. A tool used to create a sense of place in Florida Rd, the APP is a collaboration between the Florida Rd Place-Making Committee (a subcommittee of the Florida Rd UIP), placemaking company UrbanPLACES and APP development company APP Fab. “The APP is aimed at anyone from the Durban local looking for a night out, or a day visitor wanting to know where to go for a family lunch, to an employee looking for the local post office number or a tourist looking for accommodation, and so we have grouped similar information together making it easier for people to access exactly what the are looking for,” said Cara Reilly of UrbanPLACES. Comprehensive and user-friendly, the APP uses bold icons to highlight each section, with content including things like: • Local knowledge from maps and the history of Florida Rd to information on the local clinic, library and much more is contained in the Area Info section, which is constantly refined and updated. • A one-touch-call to the 24/7 UIP Hotline Number as well as the option to Report A Fault, by capturing an image and sending an alert an anything from street lights out, to lost pets, directly to the UIP. • A comprehensive A-Z that lists every business located on Florida Rd (and within the immediate boundaries) at no charge with a click-to-call phone number for easy connection • The Eat, Shop, Stay and Property categories feature key offerings in the area and allow for local businesses to upgrade their listing to include images, web and social media links and a more detail on what they offer. • A News section that links through the latest news on Florida Rd as hosted on the UIP website • An Events section with line-up of activities on Florida Rd, as hosted on the UIP website, as well as the option of checking out what is happening in the whole of Durban.

A Contacts button that users with details of a range of important contacts, from the UIP to emergency and municipal contacts. Understanding that Florida Rd is part of the incredible city of Durban, and the province of KZN, the APP has a More Durbs section, which using categorized listings gives the user info on everything from Township Tours to Local Markets and everything in between. The APP can send push notifications and a related image to all users, perfect for communicating everything from water shut downs to the opening of a new restaurant.

Additional features of the APP include a link to a stunning video that captures the essence of Florida Rd; a link to the UIP website; a developing coupon section, and a link to a form for businesses to request a listing or an upgrade. But why the need for an APP when Florida Rd has a website and social media pages? According to international statistics portal Statista, some 2.3 billion people worldwide own a smartphone, with South Africa accounting for 16.1 million of those users. And for most of those people their Smartphones have become an inseparable part of their daily lives – almost a physical appendage from the moment the phone alarm goes off in the morning! In this way, providing simple access to information via mobile phone is becoming more of a necessity than a nice to have, with a recent Forbes article going as far as saying that “…a mobile app is a standard component of any business in the future.” While businesses in Florida Rd (and the immediate surrounds) are listed FREE under the A-Z, and thus gain a level of exposure, the APP allows for paid-for upgraded listings, which are housed in the highlighted Eat, Shop, Stay and Property sections, and give businesses the opportunity to show more about what they offer. Asked if all the bases were covered, Florida Rd Place-Making Committee Chair Mike Holland noted: “From creating the structure of the APP, to loading relevant content, we have tried to be as comprehensive and inclusive as possible, but that is not to say that we haven’t missed anything or anyone, so please if you have a business or service located on, or immediately surrounding, Florida Rd and you are not listed on the APP you must let us know,” he said.

Feedback on th e APP, listing requests or info rmation on how to upgrade a listing can be sent to Divi nia Perumal (d iv in ia @ ur ba nm gt.co.z a) , www.floridaroa duip.co.za/ site/your-florid a-rd/ Go to the Durb an Routes website to dow nload the app: www.durbanro utes.co.za

Set between the Umgeni River mouth and uMhlanga Durban North is an affluent suburb and is close to central Durban and uMhlanga’s business parks, and boasts comfortable accommodation establishments that serve as an ideal base for business travellers. A wide range of eating and drinking establishments, from bistros to cocktail bars to boutique family restaurants, make Swapo Road and MacKeurtan Avenue great places to relax and meet people, while La Lucia Mall is a lovely suburban mall with a relaxed atmosphere and big brand stores. The Umgeni River Bird Park is home to over 200 species of endangered, indigenous and exotic birds. The Bird Show is the top attraction where visitors can witness owls, macaws, kookaburras, toucans, vultures and many other species as they demonstrate what they would normally do in the wild. Shows are at 11am and 2pm every day, weather permitting. Despite uMhlanga’s growth boom in the last twenty years, it’s still home to some pristine natural areas. There is a well-marked path that winds through pretty coastal forest on boardwalks that cross the Ohlange River on its way to the lagoon, buttressed by dunes. Benches and picnic spots are dotted throughout, and you can follow the trail to reach the beach and the lagoon, and the remains of a Stone Age seashell midden can also be found to the north of the lagoon. The adjacent Hawaan Forest Reserve is inland of uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. This indigenous woodland has remained in its natural state for centuries, and is characterised by important species of trees with tropical attributes, and many small animals. Entry is restricted, so phone ahead to book a guided walk.
