Southwest Branch is closed for renovation.

This fall in many ways marks the culmination of development of a Regional Library System for Durham. We closed Southwest Library on November 3 to begin construction of a facility that will expand from 10,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet. November 18 was the groundbreaking for the third of our “prototype” regional libraries, the South Regional Library at the site of the former Lowe’s Grove School near Research Triangle Park. And on November 11, SmithGroup Architects presented a report on the Main Library Planning and Programming Study, which will define the services and resources to be provided in a major renovation of Main Library in just a few years. To begin with, let’s talk about the Regional Libraries. East was first to open, in June 2006. North followed in January 2007. South, which will open around March 2010, was the third regional library designed by the Freelon Group. Because new library service models were being adopted in Durham County Library, we included some of these new ideas in the design of South. Among other things, South will have more merchandising and display shelving, a vending area for food and drink in the library, a single service desk where all librarians will greet customers as they enter the library (rather than separate children’s and adult service desks), and more self-check options with greater opportunity for staff to help customers finding materials and using the library. Southwest Regional Library will be a completely new design, even though all four of the regional libraries will be 25,000 square feet. Because Southwest is a renovation of 10,000 square feet plus an addition of 15,000 square feet, we had an opportunity working with Cherry Huffman Architects to implement some of the new service models. For example, at the first three regionals, the Teen Zones have been great successes. The Teen Zone at Southwest will be equipped with computers, seating, etc. Also, it’ll be right next to the Vending Area. Another built-in feature at Southwest is the Holds Pick-Up area, which is something new in self-service that has been very successful in our libraries. And that brings us to Main Library. In early 2009, our Planning & Programming Study team will present its report to the Board of County Commissioners. What we learned on November 11 was that we have planned for a great library renovation project, with a new entrance facing Liberty Street and many more windows. That’ll mean much daylight throughout the building. We’ll demolish the central stairwells and the elevators on the interior of the building in order to refloor the second and third levels and create vast, flexible, open spaces throughout. We’ll have a new lobby at the Liberty Street entrance and space for an art gallery. At one point a few months ago, I said in a blog entry in Durham by the Book that “A City with a Great Library is a Great City!” Well . . . Durham as a City AND Durham as a County has a Great Library System with several Great Libraries. Think of the absolutely wonderful and historic Stanford L. Warren Library. Think of the awards that North and East Regional Libraries have won for being LEED-certified “green” libraries. Think of the collections that we are working ever harder to make more responsive to the needs of all of you throughout the Durham community. Think of the computers and website and Internet access that you and so many of our fellow Durhamites can use across a wide range of hours throughout every week from Sundays through Saturdays. Think of the welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff who work for all of YOU at all our libraries! We are truly blessed.
