To read director Skip Auld’s Blog, Durham by the Book, go to: http://dbtb.wordpress.com/ Great things are happening at the library! Construction has begun on the new South Regional, and interior demolition has started on what will become the new Southwest Regional. Both libraries are scheduled to open in late spring or early summer 2010. Check out my blog, Durham by the Book, at http:// dbtb.wordpress.com/ to see pictures and video of the construction. For the next few months, when you visit the Main Library, you’ll notice a lot of activity and moving books around. We are applying a new kind of label (or tag) to the collection. These Radio Frequency Identification tags, RFID for short, will make it easier for our customers to check out on their own when the new self-check machines are installed. The tags also make inventory quicker and provide better anti-theft security. Since the tags have a cost associated with each one, we’ll be reviewing all the materials in the collection prior to tagging to remove those items that aren’t circulating. As part of our strategic plan, we are working toward our goal of building a customer-centered collection, and we don’t want to spend money tagging unpopular items that should be removed. This more targeted collection will dovetail with the newly redesigned Main Library, where we will have a friendlier, more convenient layout and better merchandising and visibility of the collection. The redesign is in the planning stages right now. For an update on the planning and programming study we began in the summer of last year, join us as the architects present their final report to the County Commissioners on February 23. We’re on the agenda at some point between 3 and 6 p.m. Here’s another great thing: You may have noticed the cool looking minivan on the cover. The van, donated by the Friends of the Durham Library, will help us take library services into the community by bringing early literacy programs to local daycare centers. A strong focus on early and family literacy is another goal in our strategic plan. The van will be a real asset in helping us reach that goal. Thanks, Friends! We’re excited about the progress we’re making toward creating the customer-centered library this community deserves. Keep giving us your feedback as we implement our strategic plan, and visit often. Great things are happening!

Spring 2009 Branching Out
