D i r e c t o r ’s M e s s a g e To read director Skip Auld’s Blog, Durham by the Book, go to: http://dbtb.wordpress.com/ Dear Reader, Durham County Library, in addition to being buildings and collections of books, computers, DVDs, CDs, and the like, is a staff of about 120 people. Every single one of us gets up every day wanting to do a good job for you, our customers. That’s a fact. Our staff, my co-workers and colleagues, do our best to be helpful, courteous, smiling, friendly, and understanding. Many of you tell me about ways one staff member or another has just made your day. Our staff are human, of course, and some days a lot of difficult situations combine to make for tension and stress. But our staff and supervisors and managers all work very hard to be cheerful even in the face of tough times. At our November Staff Development Day, we close all the libraries to gather and learn and put faces with the names and voices we know from calling around the library system. We meet to ask questions and find out what kinds of things are happening, where we’ve been and where we’re going. As we plan for the staffing and opening of our new regional libraries next year, we’ve developed a plan for major restructuring of our staffing. Staff will have good opportunities to seek promotions or to move to a new location. And we’ll have a lot of new co-workers. Our plan is focused on more effectively meeting community needs. Here’s hoping the next year will bring good times at the libraries for you and for us, as we enjoy our workplace and you enjoy the friendships that grow at the libraries with neighbors, new people you meet, and yes with library staff.

Mensaje del Director Estimados Lectores, La Biblioteca del Condado de Durham, además de ser edificios y colecciones de libros, computadoras, DVDs, CDs y cosas por el estilo, tiene un personal de por lo menos 120 personas. Cada uno de nosotros nos levantamos cada día queriendo hacer un buen trabajo para ustedes, nuestros clientes. Este es un hecho. Nuestro personal, mis compañeros de trabajo y colegas, hacemos lo mejor para ayudar, ser cortes, sonrientes, agradables, y comprensivos. Muchos de ustedes me dicen de las maneras que un trabajador u otro cambiaron positivamente su día. Nuestro personal es humano, y por supuesto, algunos días cuando hay muchas dificultades se combinan para darnos tensiones y estrés. Pero todo nuestro personal, supervisores y gerentes trabajan mucho para estar alegres hasta cuando están pasando por malos tiempos. En nuestro Día de Desarrollo del Personal en Noviembre, cerramos todas las bibliotecas del sistema para juntarnos y aprender y poner caras en nuestros nombres y voces que conocemos al hablarnos por teléfono alrededor del sistema de la biblioteca. Nos juntamos para hacer preguntas y descubrir que cosas están pasando, donde hemos estado y a dónde iremos. Al mismo tiempo que planeamos para el nuevo personal y abrir nuestras nuevas bibliotecas regionales en el próximo año, estamos desarrollando un plan para una mejor restructuración de nuestro personal. El personal tendrá nuevas oportunidades de obtener promociones o de moverse a nuevas localidades. Y tendremos muchos nuevos compañeros de trabajo. Nuestro plan está enfocado en ser más efectivo para satisfacer las necesidades de la comunidad. Winter 2009-2010 Branching Out

Enter our Martin Luther King, Jr. coloring contest by visiting the Main Library Children’s Unit and picking up a portrait coloring sheet. The portrait may be colored with crayons, markers or paint and will be displayed within the unit. Winner receives a certificate on March 1st.

SnowFlake Workshop (Ages 6 and Up) Saturday, January 30; 2 p.m. Come and learn the intricate art of snowflake making; great for bulletin boards or winter decorating. Parents are encouraged to attend and join in the fun!

Bayard Wootten, North Carolina’s Pioneering Woman Photographer Sunday, January 10; 3 p.m.

Ballroom Dancing Gala Sunday, February 14; 3 p.m.

Bayard Wootten (1875-1959), trailblazing female photographer, combined artistic vision, determination and a love of adventure to craft a long and distinguished career. Wootten emphasized artistic effects in her images at a time when realistic and documentary photography were on the rise. Though an accomplished landscape and architectural photographer, some of her most notable images are of working class black and white Americans, people other photographers at the time often ignored. An advocate for women’s equality, she overcame economic hardship and gender discrimination to become the state’s most significant early female photographer. Jerry Cotten, retired photographic archivist formerly at the North Carolina Collection, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and author of the book “Light and Air: the Photography of Bayard Wootten,” will speak about Wootten’s work and life.
