All summer long, the library will feature programs and activities that showcase the many ways people can make a splash at the library. In May, award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Eric Velasquez and hilarious theater troupe Rags to Riches visited schools to encourage children to read, explore and create at the library during summer vacation. Best-selling children’s book author Carole Boston Weatherford also appeared with Eric Velasquez on select visits. In June and July, a limited number of school children at the Main Library will get to have complimentary lunch with special guests. Other programs featuring puppets, magic, drama, music, ventriloquism and science will be making the rounds at most library branches. Then, on August 14, the library will reward readers for a summer of hard work with a grand finale, A Celebration of Reading, at the Main Library with drawings for exciting prizes such as computers, netbooks and DVD players. Please use the form on page 23 to register for the Summer Reading Club; then make plans to read every day and to Make a Splash @ the Library this summer!

Illustrator Encourages Students to Read During Summer Months Durham County Library invites children, teens and adults to get excited about reading during the 2010 Summer Reading Club with the theme, “Make a Splash: READ!” Summer Reading season will kick off with a carnival-style family reading festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 19 in the parking lot of the Main Library. For the rest of the summer, readers can earn treats and be entered in prize drawings by recording the time they spend reading or being read to. Readers will also have opportunities to participate in several special library programs designed to help them make a splash with reading throughout the summer. “We want to encourage families to read together this summer” said Karlene Fyffe, the library’s Youth Services Administrator. “Family reading will keep students reading for fun and will help to mitigate the ‘summer slide”. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer fiction or nonfiction, picture books or chapter books, graphic novels or romance novels. The Summer Reading Club provides an incentive for all readers to settle down with a good book for at least 15 minutes a day. Developing a love of reading during summer vacation can help students earn better grades once school starts again and prepare them to face the challenges of our increasingly complex world once they reach adulthood. But the Summer Reading Club isn’t just for kids. Adults who model good reading habits can also enter prize drawings.
