A b o u t t h e N ew D i r e c t o r To read the Durham County Library Blog, go to: http://dbtb.wordpress.com/ Tammy Baggett Named Durham County Library Director Durham County Manager Mike Ruffin announced the appointment of Tammy Baggett as the new Durham County Library Director. Most recently, she was Assistant Library Director for the New Hanover County Public Library in Wilmington, NC, a position she held since 2008. As Director of Library Services, Baggett will manage and direct operations at Durham County Government’s eight libraries and outreach services. According to Ruffin, “We are excited to welcome Tammy Baggett as our new Director. She is a seasoned library professional who will bring a new level of innovation and a tremendous amount of energy to our library service delivery process.” In accepting the position, Ms. Baggett said “I’m excited about my role as Library Director of Durham County! I’m committed to exceeding customer expectations and look forward to becoming actively involved in the community. I’m fortunate to have a great team of employees known for their innovation and service excellence. I consider libraries as the heart of any community. It is my goal that we continue to serve in this capacity. The people of Durham County deserve the best library system possible and that will always be my focus. For me, leading such a great library system is a dream come true!” During her extensive career Ms. Baggett has held progressively responsible positions including service at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County where she served as Senior Library Manager, the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library in Roswell, Georgia where she was an assistant branch manager, and the Forsyth County Library in WinstonSalem, where she held positions as Children’s Librarian, Assistant Branch Manager and Branch Manager. She also worked in the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Randall Library and New Hanover County Public Library while attending UNCW. She holds a Master’s of Library Science degree from North Carolina Central University and an undergraduate degree in Speech Communications with a minor in Public Relations from UNCW. Her professional affiliations include memberships in the American Library Association, and the North Carolina Library Administration where she serves as a director at large and a mentor. Ms. Baggett is expected to begin work on November 29, 2010 .

Customers are encouraged to let library staff know about problems with audio/visual materials. The library’s new disc repair machine, purchased in September by the Friends of the Durham Library, will quickly repair CDs, DVDs and audiobooks, keeping popular audio/ visual materials in circulation.

Tuesday, Feb. 15 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Noted filmmaker and journalist, Cash Michaels, will screen his award winning film Obama in NC: The Path to History. The film documents the historic election of Sen. Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States in the context of the civil rights movement juxtaposed with the racial history of North Carolina. Michaels, along with other local activists, will lead a Q&A session following the film.
CHISHOLM ‘72: UNBOUGHT & UNBOSSED (FILM SCREENING)
Tuesday, Feb. 22 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. This extraordinary film explores Shirley Chisholm’s historic run as the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968 and later as a presidential candidate in 1972. Shunned by the political establishment, she’s supported by a motley crew of blacks, feminists and young voters. The Q&A session following the film will be handled by NCCU’s Dr. Jarvis Hall.

Professor and former letter carrier, Phil Rubio, will join former and current postal workers, community groups and social activists in a community dialogue about Rubio’s book There’s Always Work at the Post Office: African American Postal Workers and the Fight for Jobs, Justice and Equality. This event will take place at the Hayti Heritage Center located at 804 Old Fayetteville Street.

You may take your donation to any Durham County Library location during regular hours. Please bring large donations (more than one bag) to the Main Library garage on Tuesday morning between 9 and noon, when the Friends of the Durham Library are present and can help unload.
