From the Director To read the Durham County Library Blog, go to: http://dbtb.wordpress.com/ My return to Durham County Library has been a welcoming experience by staff, customers and the Library Family. There definitely isn’t a shortage of southern hospitality in Durham. I’m enjoying the opportunity to reconnect in the community and to hear customers express their love and appreciation for the library. I’ve especially enjoyed chatting with volunteers who have been working diligently in preparation of the upcoming spring book sale to be held on April 8-10. They have volunteered numerous hours (often bundled in coats, scarves and gloves) to sort gently used book donations. Such efforts will help ensure a successful book sale with proceeds serving as a source of needed income for the library. Focusing on customers of all ages is priority one at Durham County libraries. In this edition of Branching Out you will find a variety of activities that are intended to educate and entertain. Staff places great emphasis on providing quality programs, and I’m confident that you will find an event that will be of interest to you. It’s important that we meet the needs of “You” our customers. One need that we’ve taken notice of is workforce development. The state of the economy has caused an increase in unemployment and others who simply find the need to re-enter the workforce. The library has taken a proactive role in helping those who are seeking employment. We have initiated a pilot program at North and South Regional Libraries that has designated computers specifically for this purpose. Don’t forget we also have books that provide tips on interviewing, as well as samples of cover letters and resumes. We also need help from you. Has the library made a positive impact on your life? If the answer is “Yes,” then let me hear from you. Over the next few months I’ll be collecting library impact stories. Check Out a Nook Book Club Kit at Durham County Library The Durham County Library is proud to announce a new service called Nook Book Club Kits. Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Durham Library, the library is now the proud owner of 24 Nook eReaders. The library is piloting a program whereby the Nooks may be checked out by book clubs with two or more members.

Spring 2011 Branching Out

To reserve a Nook Book Club Kit, the book club representative must complete an online form. When a kit becomes available, Nooks are checked out to individual members. A book club can check out a maximum of 12 Nooks, and each member receiving a Nook must have a Durham County Library card. Nook Book Club Kits are picked up and dropped off only at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro Street, at the 2nd floor information desk. The kits check out for four weeks with no renewals. The Nooks use E-Ink technology that makes the display as clear as a printed page. Fonts can be changed and resized for easy reading, and the batteries last for days before a recharge is needed. Other features include web surfing using wifi, music and a pre-loaded eAudioBook title. Reader’s guides for many of the titles available on the Nooks are also preloaded along with games and access to Barnes & Noble’s blogs. The project will allow our customers the opportunity to try reading an eBook before buying their own reader. We will be looking for feedback on how important it is for the library to purchase eBooks in the future, either to download to your own personal device, or to checkout an eReader with the title already downloaded. Science in the Summer @ Your Library Explore the world of Electricity and Magnetism through GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer camps. This fun and free initiative helps elementary and middle school students ‘grow into science’ through science education and hands-on experiments. MEINRAD CRAIGHEAD: PRAYING WITH IMAGES FILM & PANEL Main Library Saturday, Mar. 12 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. This film chronicles the life and work of a remarkable artist, mystic and teacher whose startling work spans centuries and continents. Weaving together elements of Catholicism, Native American shamanism and ancient mythology, her paintings erupt in expansive images of God as Mother. After the showing, film director Amy Kellum will lead a discussion of the film.

LIBERTY, FRIVOLITY AND MATERNITY Main Library Sunday, Mar. 13 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. StoriesWork and the Carolina Theater announce a unique off-Broadway comedy, Mother Load, to be performed in May 2011. In preparation for this event, join us for an exciting, interactive storytelling program. Hear about the highs and lows of motherhood, as experienced by the actual creator and star, Amy Wilson. As a single mother, Wilson epitomizes the joy of freedom to do exactly as she likes. Yet to her dismay, she finds so much freedom offers unexpected burdens. In this program, participants will explore the challenges, pitfalls, exhilarations and fun of being a mother in the 21st century.

SINCERE FORMS OF FLATTERY: BLACKS, WHITES AND AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC Main Library Sunday, Mar. 20 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. American popular music, with its roots in slavery and the blend of musical traditions brought from Africa and Europe, is a product of the South’s unique culture. Focusing on North Carolina and Durham in particular, Durham’s own Billy Stevens uses musical instruments and rare recordings to help his audience understand the relationship between blues, ragtime and the tobacco culture of the Piedmont. He also describes how the first distinctly American popular musical, blackface minstrelsy, influenced country, blues and pop musicians up to the present day. The result is a better understanding of how our music reflects America’s social fabric, affirming the contributions of performers both famous and forgotten. This program is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

IN THE WINGS: PLAYMAKERS ON BIG RIVER Main Library Monday, Mar. 21 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Join members of the PlayMakers artistic team in a discussion of the music of Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Winner of a Tony Award for Best Musical, it features music in bluegrass and country styles.

What do you know of the history of Durham County’s watersheds? Dr. Robert Healy of the Nicholas School of the Environment will moderate a panel of local historians and naturalists as you learn about your local watersheds. LET YOUR CHILDREN TELL Main Library Sunday, May 1 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Join the touring Theatre of North Carolina in this moving play in commemoration of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. This play is based on the actual experiences of three young people in Europe during the Holocaust – Jewish and gypsy (Roma) – who struggle to survive physically and emotionally under Nazi tyranny. Dr. Sally Drucker will lead a discussion after the play.

MEET EMMA GOLDMAN Southwest Regional Sunday, May 15 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Dr. Sally Drucker, in a one woman show, will become Emma Goldman, a 20th-century feminist anarchist. Goldman was known for fighting for freedom of speech, birth control and other progressive causes, and was considered the most dangerous woman in America by Theodore Roosevelt. Staying in character, Dr. Drucker will answer questions from the audience.

HOW TO WRITE AND PUBLISH TRUE CRIME Saturday, Mar. 12 12 noon - 2 p.m. Popular true crime author and former librarian Ron Chepesuik knows the ups and downs of being a free lance writer and publisher. In this workshop, Chepesiuk will talk about how he became a writer, his successes and failures as a writer, research methods, how to locate an agent and the pros and cons of publishing and self-publishing. Attendees are encouraged to bring their ideas for books and articles for discussion.

PAPERBACK DREAMS: THE LEGACY OF INDEPENDENT BOOKSELLERS IN DURHAM Monday, Apr. 4 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. In the last decade, competition from big chains and the internet has caused a conundrum for independent bookstores in America; many have had to close their doors in recent years. Independent bookstores such as the Regulator and the Know Bookstore have been longtime fixtures in the Durham community and national torch bearers for readers seeking literary alternatives. In this program the groundbreaking documentary Paperback Dreams will be screened, followed by a Q&A session with Bruce Bridges of the Know Bookstore and Tom Campbell and John Valentine of the Regulator Bookshop.
