Summer is one of the busiest times of the year at Durham County Library. You will find a host of activities for children, teens and adults at any location you visit. If high gas prices have you considering a “staycation” then you should consider Durham County Library as your destination place. From puppet shows and gaming tournaments to author visits and book discussion you will find something to help your “staycation” be a memorable one. I hope you will join us for our summer reading kickoff events being held throughout the library system on June 17 and 18. Such events are made possible by Durham Library Foundation, Friends of the Durham Library and Durham County. Come out to your favorite library location and celebrate! Summertime is also a great time to remind everyone that Durham County Library is going green. In an effort to be kind to our environment and to reduce postage costs, I encourage you, if you haven’t done so already, to provide your librarian your email address and take advantage of our notification system of reminders for soon-to-be-due items, overdue items and held items ready for pick up. To reduce the stress of your busy summer even more, you may want to try Library Elf. This service has features that work in conjunction with the library’s notification system. It’s a great way to manage library accounts for the entire family. Visit www.libraryelf.com to sign up for this helpful service. Don’t forget to browse the shelves for a great read. We have book after book of page turners that will have you reading all summer. Reading is a great family activity and it keeps school age children active while school is out of session. I’m currently reading In the Light of the Moon and Other Bedtime Stories by Sam McBratney with my niece and nephew. They always look forward with excitement as they wonder which story will be shared next. Happy Reading!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Family Summer Reading Club

Who can participate?

The Family Summer Reading Club is for everyone in your family. Sign up yourself and all the children and teens in your family.

How do I register? • • •

Fill out the form on page 27 and mail it in or take it to your library, or; Register online at: durhamcountylibrary.org, or; Visit any library location to register in person.

How does the Club work? For ages 0-11 •

Read for at least 15 minutes each day and keep a reading record either on paper or online at durhamcountylibrary.org. Adults are encouraged to read to infants and younger children and keep a reading record. Share your reading record with your librarian anytime to receive prizes for 10 days, 20 days, 30 days and 40 days of reading. Show your reading record to your librarian anytime to enter your name for monthly drawings. To be eligible for the grand prize drawing, you must complete the 40-day level.

What are the Club rules? • •

Each participant must read books on his/her own reading or grade level or be read to, if too young. Prizes and RIF (Reading is Fundamental) books are limited and will be distributed on a first-come/firstserved basis. Please complete the program at the library location selected on your registration form.

What are the prizes?

Prizes will be available for each age group and include: special passes/coupons for family outings, local restaurants and businesses; t-shirts and gift certificates. Grand prize drawings will take place on Friday, August 12 at the Main Library. This year’s grand prizes include personal computers, laptops, Nook books, ipods, DVD players and a digital camera for adults. The names of all winners will be announced during the finale celebrations on August 13 at all library branches. All grand prize winners will be drawn from the combined eligible entries made at all Durham County Library locations.

Read 30 hours during the summer and keep a reading record either on paper or online at durhamcountylibrary.org. Show your reading record to your librarian anytime to enter your name for monthly drawings. To be eligible for the grand prize drawing, you must participate for 30 hours and submit 1 book review.

Write down the title of each book you read, and bring your reading log to the information desk of your selected library for a passport stamp. For every two stamps received, you can fill out a raffle ticket for a chance to win monthly prizes and a prize at the end of the Summer Reading event. You can earn stamps faster by taking a Web Challenge or Side Trip Challenge. Each is worth two stamps.

Book Your Summer Reading Ticket Today! Children, teens and adults are invited to take a trip around the world during this year’s summer reading club adventures. The umbrella theme is ‘One World, Many Stories’ and your librarians have planned an exciting summer of world class reading fun. Everyone will get an opportunity to ‘visit and explore’ any continent, country, city, town or village to learn about world cultures, dress, food, music and more. Research shows that students who read during the summer months increase or maintain their grades, so we want to encourage every family to carve out time to read together this summer.

To help more students complete the program and avoid the summer slide, the library will host “Are We There Yet,” a pit stop rally designed to refuel, refresh and reenergize. This rally will be held at the Main Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. Attendees will bask in a world of fun with games, face painting, music, youth fashion show, crafts, moon bounce, mascots, refreshments and community agencies. And, the festivities would not be complete without a line-up of classic cars, so members of the Bull City Car Club will be present to give us a glimpse into their world of razzle dazzle… Please use the form on page 27 to register for the Summer Reading Club; then make plans to travel and explore the world through books this summer @ your library!

Recently, author Ramona Moreno gave elementary school students a delicious taste of foods from around the world during her Dia presentation, Freaky Foods from Around the World. Moreno, a California resident was in Durham to help the library celebrate El Da De Los Ninos/Day of the Children and help prepare students for summer reading. Moreno read from her books, gave the students an opportunity to handle Mexican jumping beans and baked crickets, and encouraged them to read during the summer. “You can travel to many countries and discover different cultures and foods just by reading books,” Moreno said. “I have visited some countries but I’ve seen the world through books.” Summer reading club participants will be encouraged to read at their own pace and log their reading time. Participants will be eligible for a variety of weekly, monthly and grand prizes. All our libraries will be offering exciting themed programs and activities that will engage and motivate families to experience a world of reading fun! Programs will feature puppets, magic, drama, music, ventriloquism, writing workshops and science camps. Read and Feed, another summer reading club offering at the Main Library, provides a limited number of children the opportunity to have complimentary lunch with special guests. Summer reading kicks off on Saturday, June 18 from 10a.m. to 1 p.m.at all library locations, except Bragtown and McDougald Terrace which will have their kick-off celebrations on Friday, June 17 from 3-5:30 p.m. The finale schedule will mirror the kick-off celebrations and will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13. All celebrations will have a carnival feel and will feature activities, games and music connected to the world theme. Free RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) books, refreshments and giveaways will be available.

Main Library MICRO-FINANCE NARRATIVES IN DURHAM

Sunday, June 12 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. This film, funded in part by the NC Humanities Council, explores a micro-finance initiative for the homeless operated by the Community Empowerment Fund, a student-run organization based at UNC-Chapel Hill. The film follows students and clients from Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Durham as they work together to build businesses, find housing and employment, and pursue educational opportunities. A panel discussion will follow the film.

MEET THE AUTHOR: JIMMY CREECH

Saturday, June 25 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. North Carolina native Rev. Jimmy Creech will read from his book, Adam’s Gift: A Memoir of a Pastor’s Calling to Defy the Church’s Persecution of Lesbians and Gays. In 1984, a parishioner named Adam came to Creech and said he was leaving the church because he was gay. From that conversation, Rev. Creech reexamined his own beliefs and came to view discrimination against LGBT people as morally wrong. A discussion and book signing will follow the reading.

THE THREE FACES OF CREATIVITY: ART, CRAFT AND DESIGN

Thursday, July 7 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Writer and sculptor Frank Hyman will talk about the three faces of creativity – art, craft and design – and how they exist not in a hierarchy, with art at the top and craft at the bottom, but in an interlocking of equals. From his varied experience as a garden designer, stonemason and photographer, Hyman believes that successful acts of creativity rest on each of these three elements like legs of a stool. With a slide show of gardens and sculpture, Hyman will offer insights and take questions.

Duke Professor of English at Duke University, will read from her book, Private Bodies, Public Text: Race, Gender and a Cultural Bioethics. Using historical examples from the Tuskegee Study and Henrietta Lack to the more contemporary examples of Terri Schiavo and those hospitalized during Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Holloway demonstrates how race and gender play pivotal roles in medical research and treatment. She makes a compelling case for the creation of a new bioethics. A book signing will follow the reading.

DAR HE: THE STORY OF EMMETT TILL A MIKE WILEY PRODUCTION

Saturday, July 23 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. On the 70th anniversary of Emmett Till’s birth, Mike Wiley brings his one man show to Durham. In 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till whistled at a white woman and was murdered. Dar He is a riveting play that chronicles the murder, trial and the unbelievable confession of the men accused of Till’s lynching. Many see the senseless and cruel murder of this boy as a spark for the emerging movement for Civil Rights.

MEET THE AUTHOR: DR. JULIANNE MALVEAUX Sunday, Aug. 14 3 p. m. - 4:30 p.m. Dr. Malveaux will read from her book Surviving and Thriving: 365 Facts in Black Economic History. This book is a celebration of the economic successes of African Americans in the United States. Dr. Malveaux is President of Bennett College for Women. Recognized for her progressive and insightful observations, she is also an economist, author and commentator, and has been described by Dr. Cornel West as “the most iconoclastic public intellectual in the country.” A discussion and book signing will follow the reading.

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN CLASSICAL MUSIC: PERFORMANCE & LECTURE Saturday, Aug.27 3 p. m. - 4:30 Join Otis Alexander and Dr.Adele D. Allen for a lecture and performance. Mr. Alexander, a retired library administrator, received his formal music training at Oberlin College and will provide the vocal selections. Dr. Allen, a classically trained pianist, will perform on the piano. They will perform works by George Frederick Handel, Frans Schubert and Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will also include readings by Paul Laurence Dunbar set to music and some classic spirituals.

RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) Needs Your Support Federal funding for RIF has been eliminated from the budget for this fiscal year. This means that thousands of children in Durham and all across North Carolina will not receive free high quality books and other resources through RIF, the nation’s oldest and largest children’s and family literacy organization. This year RIF will celebrate 45 years of helping children discover the joy of reading! Recently, two of your librarians traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the RIF Leaders for Literacy Conference and had the remarkable opportunity to talk with staff in the NC congressional offices about how the elimination of RIF funding will impact North Carolina. Congressional staff was pleased to learn that last year North Carolina distributed 198,870 books to 52,867 children. Staff on Capitol Hill was also pleased to learn that Durham County Library distributes approximately 11,000 free RIF books to more than 5,000 children and teens during the annual family summer reading club. Although congressional staff was pleased to hear from your librarians they would be even more thrilled to hear from you so please send us stories about your children’s experiences choosing their free RIF books. We’ll compile them and include them in our next presentation. Send your stories to kfyffe@ durhamcountync.gov or take them to the children’s librarian at your favorite library. MEET ROSIE THE RIVETER Sunday, Aug. 7 3 p.m. - 4:30 p. m. Rosie the Riveter appears at the library! During World War II, women riveted, welded and made bullets, working in defense industry factories to aid the war effort. After her presentation, our library visitor will answer questions from the audience. Rosie the Riveter is a composite figure drawn from records and memories of actual women defense workers, unsung heroines who helped to win the war. Dr. Sally Ann Drucker, who previously appeared here as Emma Goldman, presents this costumed re-creation.
