Friends Celebrate 40th Year With Biggest Gift Ever
T
he Friends of the Durham Library celebrated their 40th anniversary with a great big $42,500 gift to improve library service to customers – the largest single grant awarded in the Friends’ 40-year history! Then, they made an outstanding commitment to library staff for the next two years with the Friends of the Durham Library Scholarship Program for library employees. First, the Friends purchased a van that will help bring early literacy programs to Durham’s childcare family homes and storytimes to elementary schools and The new Discovery Mobile, made possible by the Friends’ generosity, will be used for family literacy afterschool programs. The van, called the programs. Discovery Mobile, will transport storytime books and supplies to Durham’s childcare family homes in the “Get Set, Get Ready, Let’s Read!” And last but definitely not least, on January 7, 2009, the early literacy outreach program, and it will be a traveling Friends established the Friends of the Durham Library billboard for the library and the Friends. The van’s exterior Scholarship Program. Four scholarships of up to $2,500 each features happy young people’s faces and plenty of the books, will be awarded on April 30, 2009 to library staff who are digital media and technology that encourage family literacy pursuing two years of study in library science, early childhood and a love of learning. Everywhere the Discovery Mobile education, business and public administration, computer goes, children and adults will notice this colorful, engaging science, or a college transfer program at a community college. reminder of the valuable programs the library provides, and A second round of scholarships will be awarded in April of the generosity of the Friends. 2010. A committee will select the scholarship recipients. Second, the Friends have given funds for digital display screens at five of the full-service libraries, to provide up-tothe-minute information and notices to Durham County Library customers. The digital display screens, which are updated remotely by computer, will be installed inside the entrances of Main, East Regional, North Regional, Parkwood and Stanford L. Warren libraries. When it opens in 18 months, Southwest Regional Library will also have a screen. “This technology is a great tool for getting time-sensitive information to customers,” said Priscilla Lewis, Assistant Director for Facilities. “We can use it to let folks know about upcoming programs across the library system and to get the word out about new library services and the Friends book sales.”

This generous two-year commitment demonstrates the Friends’ dedication to library staff, and the feeling is very mutual. “Even in tough times,” said Library Director, Skip Auld, “the Friends are investing in the library because they know that now more than ever people need their public library and the library needs its Friends. I speak for the entire staff when I say ‘Thank you to the Friends and to every member of the community who supports the library with time, energy and resources.’”

Durham Makes Friends with Paula Poundstone
O
n October 24, 2008, Paula Poundstone signed books and hobnobbed with the Friends after her live show at the Carolina Theatre. As national spokesperson for Friends of the Library USA, Paula generously donated the proceeds from the sale of her books to the Friends of the Durham Library. The Friends also used Paula’s appearance as a way to publicize the organization and encourage membership by raffling off tickets to her show throughout the book sale weekend.
Thanks to Paula’s hilarious performance and friendly personality, the Friends sold 36 copies of her book. At the end of the evening, the Friends awarded Paula a lifetime membership. She’s welcome back anytime.
The results were great! Total memberships sold over the weekend: 79 for $1,320. Of that total more than half were new members. Staff and volunteers had a great time the evening of the event answering general questions and talking up the Friends. Top right: The Membership Promotion Team is ready to sell Paula’s books at Carolina Theatre: Vicki Hertz, Ann Wilder, Jeff Anton, Anastasia Bush and Martha Scotford. Bottom right: Paula is happy to receive an honorary Life Membership to the Friends of the Durham Library from Jeff Anton, Board Member. Paula’s comment, “Is this something I’m going to regret later?”
Wrap-a-rama Wrap Up On December 6, 2008, the Friends hosted the first ever Wrap-a-rama, free gift wrapping of holiday book purchases from the minibooksale sites. The day kicked off the new permanent mini-booksales for Main and Stanford L. Warren.
of new booksale customers. Even at established sites the Wrap-a-rama caught the attention of library customers who did not know about mini-booksales.
There were plenty of volunteers (31 adults to man 2-hour shifts at five sites) and plenty of book sales, ($867 total) but not a whole lot of wrapping. It looked like many of the holiday purchases were really gifts for the giver, as many people purchased books but chose not to have them wrapped. In the end, volunteers wrapped 50-70 books. All in all it was a very successful day and a great way to raise the profile of the Friends. Volunteers and staff noted that the visibility of the Wrap-a-rama got the attention Best of Friends Winter 2009

The Cycle of a Book Next I’m up for sale: - I might end up at an ongoing minibooksale at one of five libraries.*
First, I’m donated to the Friends along with other books, CDs, DVDs and audiobooks.
- Or, I could be one of the thousands of books in the big book sales at the Main Library held three times a year in spring, summer and fall.*
Either way, the proceeds from my sale are returned to the library.
The Friends volunteers sort me and put a price on me.
- Or, I could be sent to an online reseller.
Which helps the library continue to serve you!

Poetry for Everyone Wins Award
P
oetry for Everyone – a program that celebrates National Poetry Month by bringing together local celebrities, writers and elected officials to read their favorite poems – won the North Carolina Public Library Directors Award for Adult Programming. Library Director, Skip Auld; Adult Programming Coordinator, Marian Fragola; and Marketing and Development Manager, Gina Rozier traveled to the Grandover Resort in Greensboro to accept the certificate in December of last year. Marian created the program as a way to make poetry accessible for everyone. Throughout the month of April, poetry lovers from all walks of life came together at various libraries to share their stories and their favorite poems. From Mayor Bill Bell and County Manager Mike Ruffin, to jazz artist Nnenna Freelon and radio personality Frank Stasio, each gathering created a unique ambience based on the random mix of readers. Poetry for Everyone was such a success, the program will return this April. Special guests will include Jaki Shelton Green, the Piedmont Laureate; José Lopez, Sr., Durham’s police chief; and Friends president Bobbie Walters-Brown. Visit the library’s website at www.durhamcountylibrary.org for times and locations.
Construction Begins on South Regional Library
C
onstruction is expected to take about 18 months, and the library is scheduled to open in late spring or early summer 2010. Located at S. Alston Avenue near Hwy 54 at the old Lowe’s Grove School site, South Regional will serve southern Durham County and the RTP area. It will replace the Parkwood Branch Library located at 5122 Revere Road, which will close shortly before the grand opening of the new regional. Volunteers needed: Volunteers are needed to help promote the library at a variety of library events. Contact Elsa Woods at 919-490-5560 or elsawoods@nc.rr.com.

Friends’ Technology Grant Keeps on Giving
B
ack in spring of 2008, the library purchased 10 laptop computers with funds made possible by a $25,000 challenge grant from the Friends. It was a great example of what happens when the library family works together. The Friends issued the challenge, and the Foundation helped to meet it. And of course, the community rose to the occasion by providing the funds.
The Library Family Board of Trustees Al Roberts, Chair Elsa Woods, Vice-Chair Tatia Ash Marian Dillahunt-Andrews Joe Hewitt Allan Lang Mohammad Rashdi Michael Schoenfeld Joyce Sykes Bill Nesmith, a reference librarian at East Regional Library, teaches Microsoft Excel using the roving computer lab.
Well, now the laptops have been purchased, and they are making a real difference for library customers and even staff. The laptops are considered a roving computer lab that is booked much like any other room or resource in the library. North Regional and East Regional book the roving computer lab for one week out of each month. During their week with the laptops they offer computer classes to the public, including introduction to computers, Internet and email, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The portable lab has made it much easier to offer classes that are even more valuable in these difficult economic times. Before the laptops arrived, staff had to commandeer the public computers, which decreased the number of machines available for community use. The layout and location of the public computers also made it difficult to teach classes. “It really was impossible to hold classes well before,” said Michelle Geyer, a reference librarian at North Regional. “The public service computers are not situated in a way that makes teaching easy. Now we can hold the classes in a study room where we can project the instructor’s screen on a wall, and all the students can face the same way. Plus, it’s quieter.” Geyer said they teach five to six classes during the week they have the laptops
at North, and they usually have 100 percent registration and about 50-75 percent participation. Kathleen Moore, the teen librarian at North, uses the laptops to teach teens graphic design and web design. Because the laptops are configured to connect to the Internet through wireless technology, staff are even able to use online tutorials in their classes. The roving computer lab is designed so that once customers use the laptops and shut down, all new information is wiped from them. This prevents the computers from being damaged by viruses or other malicious programs. Once per month the laptops return to IT for upgrades and maintenance. The system is working so well, other libraries are scheduled to come on board soon. In the coming months, Stanford L. Warren will begin offering classes. Once South and Southwest Regionals are operational it is expected that they will offer classes as well. This gift from the Friends, Foundation and community continues to enhance the services the library provides to its customers, and it makes giving great customer service a little easier for the staff.

The Power of Partnerships
D
For example, one attendee said, “This is an amazing resource. The presentations were terrific. Very exciting!”
The library’s partnership with the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, for example, has the chief hallmark of a great partnership – each partner benefits from the strengths of the other. Together, the Nasher and the library have developed a series called Art with the Experts, in which curators and staff members from the Nasher lead interactive slide shows and discussions at the library in conjunction with each of its major exhibit. The next Art with the Experts event, to discuss the exhibit Escultura Social, will be March 24 at 7:00 pm at Parkwood Branch, 5122 Revere Road. The response and turnout at Art with the Experts programs has been excellent.
The Nasher Museum values its partnership with the library as well. “Partnering with the library gives us an opportunity to get in touch with people who may not know about the museum or who may not have visited,” said Juline Chevalier, the Nasher Museum’s curator of education. “The library is a great place for programs because it is an inherently accessible public space and a place where most people feel comfortable. Sometimes museums are not as readily perceived as public spaces, but by partnering with the library we can communicate the message that the Nasher is a welcoming space and is a wonderful resource.” She continued, “A program like Art with the Experts gives attendees a positive experience related to the Nasher, and can encourage them to visit us.”
urham County Library has many partnerships, including a wonderful and longstanding partnership with its Friends of the Durham Library group. Recently, the library has been developing new partnerships to offer innovative and exciting humanities programs.
Listed below are three upcoming programs that have been developed in collaboration with community partners. We hope you will join us and experience the power of partnerships!
