Get ready for the competition with the help of online resources and other activities designed to improve your spelling. GINGERBREAD HOUSE COMPETITION (All Ages) Wednesday, Dec. 9; Tuesday, Dec. 15 4 - 5 p.m. Get in the holiday spirit! Make a gingerbread house (or two) with all the trimmings. Build it your way, then decide whether to eat it, share it or give it away as a present. All supplies will be provided.

Calling all young actors!!! Learn to read a script, take stage directions and design costumes, all culminating in a wonderful play for your family and friends. This program is designed for children who can read on their own. Join us for some of your favorite childhood classics, and let the play begin!

Warm up for in-house storytime by enjoying a quick online story and game with the animated, talking Tumblebooks. Many of the books provide story-related puzzles and games and features “Word Helper.” Participants must be able to use a computer or be assisted by a caregiver.

Come and enjoy the holiday magic of three childhood classics. From Rudolph to Frosty, we invite you for popcorn and a movie. Each movie will be followed by a craft special in which the children will get to make their very own Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Reindeer and that devilish villain, the Grinch.

LEGO MANIA (All Ages) Wednesdays (No program Dec. 23, 30) 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Join our weekly LEGO Club. All can have fun as our LEGO collection comes in various sizes – super size for tots, medium for preschoolers, and mini for avid builders. A LETTER TO SANTA! (All Ages) Dec. 1-16 Santa has lots of mailboxes throughout the world to help collect all the holiday wishes of good little boys and girls. We were lucky to be one of his chosen locations. Drop off a letter for Santa at the Children’s Unit by Dec. 16, and Santa’s elves will make sure a letter arrives at your home, just in time for Christmas. Parents, make sure your child’s name and address are legible. *CHESS FOR KIDS (Pre-school, Elementary School) Tuesdays, Dec. 1; Jan. 5; Feb. 2 4 - 5 p.m. Join Terence Neal for a fun-filled afternoon, as he introduces children to the basics of chess. Chess improves concentration and memory, enhances reading and math skills, fosters logical and critical thinking, encourages creativity and is just plain fun!

Join Ms. Laurel for a holiday puppet show that promises to leave you wanting more. The magic continues with stories, songs, a craft and a gingerbread treat to bring this holiday special to a sweet end.

*RETRO SATURDAYS (Pre-school, Elementary School) Saturdays, Dec. 19; Jan. 30; Feb. 27 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Learn how to play the fun games your mother and father played when they were young, from marbles to Bingo, hula-hoops to hop scotch, don’t miss out on the fun. Put down your cell phone, turn-off your computer, and let’s revisit a time when life was simple and fun. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate!

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. COLORING CONTEST (All Ages) Jan. 1-18 Let’s celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Stop by the Children’s Unit and pick up a Martin Luther King, Jr. coloring package. Color your provided portrait in-house or at home and return it by Jan 18th. All entries will be displayed within the unit and voted upon by the children. The person who receives the most votes will receive library goodies.

*SNOWFLAKE WORKSHOP (Kindergarten, 6-12 Year Olds) Saturday, Jan. 9 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Learn how to make beautiful and intricate art of snowflake making, great for wintertime decorating. This program is recommended for children ages 6 to 12, as scissors and cutting will be involved.

LOVE TALES A VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL! (Infants, Pre-school, Elementary School) Saturday, Feb. 13 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Join Mickey Mouse and the gang as they celebrate Valentine’s Day with the one they love best, Y-O-U! Enjoy this lovable Disney classic followed by a fun craft and delicious treat to share with someone you love.

STORY SHARING KITS (Pre-school, Kindergarten) On-going Calling all daycare providers: have we got a resource for you! A Story Sharing Kit is a storytime in a bag! Each kit is theme-based and supports the daycare curriculum with over 75 themes. The kits provide information in a variety of mediums: books, videos, CDs, puzzles, puppets, flannel board stories, activity guides and more. Check them out and return them in the Main Library’s Children’s Unit. Daycare provider status must be verified. (6-12 Year Olds) Saturday, Dec. 5 4 - 4:45 p.m. Join us for an easy and rewarding way to combine baking, fun and gift giving. Each child should bring 36 cookies to share (homemade or store bought). Step 1: Talk about our cookies and why we enjoy them so much. Step 2: Remember to bring a container to take some cookies home! Step 3: Begin cookie swap!!! Step 4: Enjoy a sample or two of cookies along with some fun trivia.

STAR WARS PARTY! (All Ages) Wednesday, Dec. 9 4 - 5:30 p.m. Calling all Star Wars fans! Join us for a Star Wars party as we celebrate the upcoming most anticipated movie release, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. There will be games, trivia, snacks and crafts. Costumes encouraged, but not required. May the Force be with you! *HOGWARTS CLUB FOR WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY (6-12 Year Olds) Saturday, Dec. 12 4 - 4:45 p.m. Join the Hogwarts Club of Witchcraft and Wizardry each month to talk about Harry Potter and do a magical activity. Come use your creativity and spread some love by designing Valentine cards for local seniors.

Warren Library’s fourth annual Gingerbread House Showdown! And yes, of course, you get to take your candy creation home! DIY HOLIDAY CARDS (All Ages) Monday-Friday, Dec. 14 - 18 All Day Spread some holiday cheer! Stop by the library to make a few holiday cards to share with your friends and family! Supplies are at the Children’s Desk. *CHAINMAILLE ART WORKSHOP (6-12 Year Olds) Wednesday, Jan. 27 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Put the shiny in your life as you learn the art of weaving chainmaille from Split Infinity Jewelry artist Erin Hathaway. Based upon classical chainmaille patterns used historically as armor, we will make art that is lightweight and colorful. Made from super shiny anodized aluminum jump rings in a rainbow of colors, this introductory workshop will teach you a weave that can be applied to a variety of art. DIY VALENTINE’S CARDS (All Ages) Monday-Friday, Feb. 8 - 12 All Day Don’t have time to go buy a Valentine’s Day card for your loved ones? Come by the library and make your own!
