EXTREME GINGERBREAD CHALLENGE (Grades K-12) Wednesday, Dec. 7 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Combine sugar and a festive spirit with even more sugar and you get an awesome gingerbread challenge! Make a gingerbread house with all the trimmings! Then, after you build it your way, decide whether to eat it, share it or give it away as a present. All supplies will be provided. READERS THEATER WORKSHOP (Grades 3-6) Tuesdays, Jan. 3 - Feb. 7 4 - 5 p.m. Join in the fun and make stories come to life! Adapt stories from books into plays! What do you say when you get socks instead of the cool race car you really wanted? How soon after receiving a gift should you send a thank you card? Knowing and using good manners can make holidays and any day pleasant and enjoyable for everyone. Through stories, songs, role-playing and more, children can brush up on the winning behavior we all wish to give and receive.

The Humane Society of Durham joins us for a visit to the library with a canine mascot to talk about animal adoptions! We are also going to have a puppet show about our barking friends, presented by Ms. Laurel and friends. Join us for a really good time! *SNOWFLAKE WORKSHOP (Kindergarten, 6-12 Year Olds) Wednesday, Dec. 14 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Learn to make beautiful and intricate snowflakes. Snowflakes are great for winter-time decorating. This program is recommended for children ages 6 to 12, as scissors and cutting will be involved.
*EASY ORIGAMI WITH MS. ANNA! (6-12 Year Olds) Friday, Dec. 16 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Origami beginners are welcome! During this session children are introduced to basic folding skills and simple techniques of origami. Programs for kids Mai n Li br ar y *A LETTER TO SANTA! (All Ages) Ongoing, Dec. 1 - 15 Santa has lots of mailboxes throughout the world to help collect children’s holiday wishes. We are lucky to be one of his chosen locations. Drop off a letter for Santa at the Main Library Children’s Unit and Santa’s elves will make sure a letter arrives at your home, just in time for Christmas. Parents, make sure your child’s first and last name is written clearly. The full address should be correct and legible, so that Santa’s little elves won’t get lost! All letters must be hand-delivered at the Children’s Unit desk and arrive no later than Dec. 15.
*LIBRARY ETIQUETTE AND TOUR SESSION (6-12 Year Olds) Ongoing, Dec. 1 - 17 This program is open to schools, daycares, homeschoolers and day camps. Enjoy a tour of the library followed by an information session explaining the expectations for children when visiting the library. Each session is scheduled upon request. *STORY SHARING KITS (Adults) Ongoing, Dec. 1 - 17 Calling all daycare providers! We have a great resource for you! Story Sharing Kits are a story time in a bag! Each Kit is theme-based and designed to support daycare curriculums— there are over 75 themes. The Kits provide information in a variety of mediums: books, videos, cds, puzzles, puppets, flannel board stories, activity guides and more. The Kits can only be checked out and returned at the Main Library’s Children’s Unit to ensure they are complete prior to check out and upon return. Kits are available only to daycare providers. Each week brings exploration of different activities. Parents are always invited to facilitate a lab. Come out and display your handwriting, learn the lost art of cursive writing and discover what your handwriting reveals about you. *NAIL ART (6-12 Year Olds) Friday, Feb. 24 3 - 4 p.m. At this fun Friday afternoon program, children will get to enjoy a book and also learn how to paint their nails using their choices of colors inspired by a book. We will add simple nail art designs, too, and make your nails really pop!
Tutoring is offered on a first-come, firstserved basis to children in grades K-5. Space is limited, and an application must be completed in order to receive tutoring. Applications will be accepted January 2 - 9. Schedules will be emailed out no later than January 13.

This four-part series is presented by Mike Gallagher, Ph.D., a retired consultant in Test Development. Gallagher has worked with the Public Schools of North Carolina. Each session will focus on released EOG questions, facts students should know and problem solving skills. This program is for adults only, and registration is required.
