Meet DCL’s New Bookmobile, Destination Literacy

We are excited to welcome Durham County Library’s new bookmobile, named Destination Literacy.

Locations

The new vehicle holds 3,000 books, but patrons have access to the entire library collection through requests. It features a lift for loading and unloading, as well as an awning to facilitate outdoor programming. The bookmobile makes approximately 60 stops each month and circulates almost 50,000 books per year.

Join us at Main Library for Durham County’s Third Annual Storytelling Festival! It will be a day full of laughter, excitement and the rich oral tradition of storytelling. Featured storytellers include Donna Washington, Kali Ferguson, Alan Hoal, Cynthia Raxter, Bobbie Pell, Mark Riddle and ReVonda Crow. There will also be refreshments, crafts, a “tattoo parlor” and other fun activities for the whole family to enjoy!

This thought-provoking animated tale by Dr. Seuss teaches us to protect and cherish the earth and warns us of what could happen if we don’t. The movie will be followed by a seed planting craft, encouraging you to love and nurture a plant that may one day end up in your garden.

*THE MERRY MONTH OF MAY BIKE RODEO (All Ages) Saturday, May 14 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon Bring your bike and celebrate National Bike Month with the Spring Bike Rodeo at Main. Learn bike safety, practice cycling skills and decorate your two or three wheeler. Instruction and guidance are provided by the dedicated non-profit groups Bike Durham, Triangle Bike Works and Durham Bike Co-op. Children will be fitted for and issued free bike helmets as long as supplies last. The program will be presented rain or shine.

KNITTING FOR KIDS (All ages) Saturdays, Mar. 12; Apr. 2; May 14 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Kids will join Mrs. Cecilia for this program designed to teach and enhance knitting for kids. Materials will be provided. *PI DAY (Elementary)

Monday, Mar. 14 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Do you know PI? Learn more about the mathematical symbol π. Join us as we celebrate PI Day with interactive fun. We will enjoy music and crafts and PIE…Pizza Pie!

*TAEKWONDO DEMONSTRATION (All ages) Saturday, Apr. 2 3 - 4 p.m. Taekwondo is the most popular and kidfriendly martial art. The Kim’s White Tiger Demonstration team will present a powerful and energetic performance. Also, children can learn a basic technique of Taekwondo. Let’s burn your energy!

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION (All ages) Friday, Apr. 22 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Join our book garden and meet Craig, the NC Tomato Man. Children will learn about taking care of the earth and recycling. We will play games, read funny stories about helping the earth and more. SHADOW PUPPETS (Baby, Pre-school, Kindergarten) Saturday, May 7 11 a.m. - 12 noon Learn how to make you own shadow puppets. We will test them out before you take them home. *TASTE OF WORLD (Elementary) Saturday, May 14 3 - 4 p.m. We cannot travel all of world, but we can travel through our taste buds and explore foods of the world. Children will learn how to cook and use fresh ingredients. You can get to eat what you make and share with your friends and family.
