NAMI DURHAM PUBLIC EDUCATION MEETING: NEW AND BREAKTHROUGH TREATMENTS Tuesday, Jan. 3, 7 p.m.  Southwest Regional

Presented by the Durham chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), at this meeting Dr. Andrew Klise from the Ketamine Treatment Centers will share information about a revolutionary medication that delivers relief from depression within hours. Barbara Karas will talk about tapping on acupressure points in the upper body and making specific guided statements to relieve stress, reduce anxiety and alleviate fear. IN THE WINGS: INTIMATE APPAREL Monday, Jan. 9, 7 p.m.  Southwest Regional

Esther sews elegant intimates for high society and fallen women alike, fashioning an independent path in her search for love and respect. A compelling look at the joys and sorrows of an AfricanAmerican seamstress told against the rich tapestry of 1905 New York. Join members of the production to discuss this play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage.

SISTER CITIES: EXPLORING THE WORLD’S LITERARY TRADITIONS Saturday, Jan. 21, 3 p.m.

Join Sister Cities of Durham for another virtual trip around the globe. This time we’ll focus on literary greats as well as literary traditions, stories and styles that have originated from Durham’s sister city regions in Tanzania, Great Britain, Russia, China and Japan. PlayMakers Community Tour begins a new initiative in the community. Come out and see their spirited, bare bones touring production of the Shakespeare comedy Measure for Measure. The performance will be one hour with a little meet and greet time after!

NAMI DURHAM PUBLIC EDUCATION MEETING: CIT SAVES LIVES Tuesday, Feb. 7, 7 p.m.  East Regional

Presented by the Durham chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Durham police officer Maxwell Peterson will talk about CIT (Crisis Intervention Training), a 40-hour training for police officers, sheriff’s deputies and other first responders when called to intervene with a person suffering from serious mental illness. HOME MOVIE DAY Saturday, Feb. 11, 2 p.m.  Southwest Regional

Home Movie Day is an international celebration of amateur films, designed to provide a showcase for home movies, student films and other forms of amateur media while also providing a gathering to discuss best practices for film and digital media preservation. Look through your attic, dig through your closets, call up Grandma and search out your family’s home movies. Bring 8mm, Super8mm, 16mm film, VHS and Video8/Hi8 video tape (sorry, no slides) to see your movie projected. Or just show up and watch the films of others. FILM SCREENING: AMERICA’S FIRST FOREST: CARL SCHENCK AND THE ASHEVILLE EXPERIMENT Monday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m.

Join Dr. James G. Lewis, historian for the Forest History Society and an executive producer and writer of the film America’s First Forest: Carl Schenck and the Asheville Experiment, for a screening of this program made for public television. Come learn about how a German forester named Carl Schenck came to America in 1895 to manage the forests at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and helped launch the early conservation movement. McDonald III’s presentation about The Shadow Tiger, a new book which documents his father Billy’s experience as wingman to famed airman General Claire Chennault, will surely capture your imagination. Explore the music of The Beatles with presenter Aaron Krerowicz in this 60-minute multimedia presentation (part history and part musical analysis) spanning the full 1960s: beginning with the band’s seminal visits to Hamburg, continuing through Beatlemania and concluding with Abbey Road. The program will be supplemented with audio clips of music and excerpts from interviews with the band members.

LEGAL AID CLINICS Jan. 24; Feb. 16; Mar. 14, 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Each program will focus on a different topic - health care in January, divorce in February, and in March, the focus is on custody. Legal Aid of North Carolina’s free do-it-yourself legal clinics educate people about their rights and empower them to handle certain basic legal issues without the help of a lawyer. Participants receive all the guidance and paperwork necessary to walk out of the clinic and into the courthouse.

*WEEDS – FRIEND OR FOE? Sunday, Mar. 5, 3 p.m. A weed is a plant that has adapted to thrive and multiply and become difficult to remove. Once a gardener sticks a shovel into the earth, a weed will follow. But can a weed be helpful? Join Nan Len, Durham County Extension Master Gardener volunteer, to learn more about the intriguing world of weeds.

MEET THE AUTHOR: FRANCES O’ROARK DOWELL Saturday, Mar. 25, 2 p.m. Frances O’Roark Dowell, award winning children’s book author, has written her first novel for adults, Birds in the Air. She combines her deep connection to the quilting life and her love of storytelling to create a novel about the abiding friendships that bind together a community of women who share a passion for making quilts. Frances also hosts the popular “Off-Kilter Quilt” podcast, where she talks about her latest quilt projects with fellow quilters around the globe.
