WELCOME
WELCOME FROM
LEE SANDERS GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO MAIDEN CASTLE FOR TODAY’S GAME AGAINST MANCHESTER UNITED I’d like to welcome Marc Skinner and all the players, staff, officials and fans who have made the journey from Manchester United today.
opportunity for us to test ourselves against some great players. You just have to look at the interest in the fixture and the tickets we’ve sold these are the players that our sqaud should want to play against. It’s what us as a club and a staff should want to compete with. This is why we’re all involved in sport, to compete with the very best we can. It’s going to be a tough game and we’ll respect Manchester United and the quality they have, but Durham is always a tough place to come. If I know anything about these players, they’ll make it difficult this evening.
Our last two games have brought two more positive results and again credit needs to go to the staff for preparing the players and to the players themselves for rising to every occasion. We’ve had some real challenges since the beginning of the season and we’re still dealing with a lot of knocks and niggles and are nursing people through at the moment, but the care and the attention that the players are getting from the staff and the work they’re putting in themselves is phenomenal at the minute.
The support we got away at Sunderland was absolutely phenomenal. We actually didn’t feel like we were away from home and I know the players would have really appreciated that. Again, it’s unbeliveable the number of tickets we’ve sold for the game. I understand there’s general interest in people coming to see Manchetser United play in the region and that’s great for the sport in the region. It’s good for young players and spectators that we can give the opportunity for them to come and see games like this.
We’re only six games into the league season and we haven’t played everybody yet, so there is absolutely more to come from the team. But have our performances been poor? Absolutely not. We’ve done what we’ve needed to do to win games. The way we competed against Charlton may not have been the prettiest but it was what we needed to do to win that game. We’ve played better football and if you look at some of the goals we’ve scored - the build-up to Ellie Christon’s goal against Lewes and Mollie Lambert’s goal at the weekend, the way Beth Hepple dispatched her free-kick at Sunderland - it’s good to watch. We’ve played some good stuff. We haven’t had that all-round 90 minute performance yet but we aren’t the first and we certainly won’t be the last team to have that issue.
Thanks as always for your support,
Now we turn our attentions to the Continental Tyres Cup - which will be a good 3
CAPTAIN’S NOTES
THE SKIPPER
SARAH WILSON GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK AS WE PREPARE TO PLAY MANCHESTER UNITED The result in our last home game against Lewes was a big one. We know how difficult it is to face them and it’s always a really tough game and this time it wasn’t any different, so it was great to pick up the three points at home.
We are developing some momentum but we just need to keep focused. We know how tough the league is, how competitive it is and how it can change very quickly. Now we face Manchester United and we know that today is going to be a huge test. We know the quality of the players that we are likely to be facing and the type of football they play. But I will always back this squad and I know how hard we will work to put in the performance.
We then followed that up with another win at Sunderland and it was great to come away with three points in the derby. The game was built-up and I thought the girls dealt with the pressure well. We know that first half we didn’t really get out of first gear and that was frustrating. We found it difficult to break them down but we knew we had to be patient.
The Continental Tyres Cup is a great opportunity to test yourself against the best teams in the country and some of the best players in the world. It’s a fantastic occasion for the fans too. Last season we were successful in the competition and we weren’t able to share that with our fans, but this year we can and it’s really exciting.
But in the second half we came out fighting. We scored two fantastic goals - Beth’s freekick was class and we see her working on them in training, so it was great to see it come off for her as it was very well deserved.
We’re set for a big crowd tonight and the support means everything to us. We keep saying how much of a difference they make and how much we appreciate it. The support so far this season has been amazing, both home and away.
We were also so pleased for Mollie. She was one of the standout players in that game and she deserved her goal - but we have all made her aware she needs to work on her knee slide celebrations! We’ve now kept four clean sheets in a row and as defenders we do pride ourselves on that. However, we have players in front of us working so hard pressing to prevent things coming through. When you have that it makes our job so much easier. 5

THE BIG INTERVIEW WITH ELLIE CHRISTON...
THE WIN AT SUNDERLAND LAST WEEKEND WAS A MILESTONE ONE FOR MANY REASONS For the team as a collective, it signalled the first time that the Wildcats had triumphed over their North East rivals in their history.
fixtures - although the last meeting between the two ended as a draw in 2017 - and so a Durham win was something of a statement of intent.
And on a personal level for Ellie Christon, it marked her 150th appearance for the club.
“We did say that pre-game - we want to prove that we’re the best team in the North East,” revealed Christon.
Having joined Durham in 2014 prior to the start of the new second tier - the FA Women’s Super League 2, as it was then - Christon has since become part of the fabric at the club.
“To get that win is class and it’s another good three points on the board for us. “Now we need to just keep pushing on.”
And as the team has grown, so too has the flying full-back.
Christon is the third player to hit the major landmark at Durham - following in the footsteps of fellow long-serving players Sarah Wilson and Beth Hepple.
Indeed, her 149th appearance brought a well-taken goal in the win over Lewes - which meant the milestone game itself had a lot to live up to.
There are serval players who have now made 100 appearances for the club and many more approaching that mark too, as the club’s experienced core continue to play their part.
But it didn’t disappoint. “It was an unbeliveable day for it,” said Christon of the landmark moment.
And the defender believes that the fact so many players are now racking-up major appearance milestones is testament to a club where players want to remain.
“A great crowd, a good performance from the girls again and a solid 2-0 win. “I think we love a 2-0 at the minute!
“It’s really hard to want to leave because you fight for each other every week and you have each other’s backs,” she said.
“It’s another clean sheet and it’s really nice to hit the 150 mark.”
“There’s always a good feeling and spirit to how we play - and off the pitch as well.
The road to hitting that mark has been a long one for Christon and the team - but above all, it has been one of steady progression.
“We’re all friends and there’s no cliques whatsoever.
“It’s been a journey and we’ve just grown and built every year,” explains the defender. “There is a family feel and an emotional element to it, which is why we’re all so pleased to be at the top of the league.” And perhaps no result better underlined that progression than the one Durham picked-up at The Hetton Centre last weekend. Sunderland had previously dominated the
“I love playing with this team.” So from the 150 games played so far, which memories stand out for Christon? “I think beating Manchester United at home and playing Chelsea at home in front of that good crowd. “But I think I just love every week. I love the team, I love the staff and I love training.
12
BIG INTERVIEW
And something that could also play to Durham’s advantage is the sizeable crowd set to descend upon Maiden Castle for the game.
“It’s such a good environment and I always develop and push on because of the girls and the way everything is ran.
It will be the highest crowd seen at the new stadium since the club’s move ther e- and Christon is hoping the vocal crowd can make a difference.
“It’s class to see the growth of everything.” Christon will be hoping for a 151st appearance this evening with Manchester United again in town.
“It’ll be our first time getting a WSL team down in front of a big crowd at Maiden Castle.
While the dynamics have no doubt changed since the last time the two sides met - with the Red Devils now an established top tier side - it’s still a game to relish for the Wildcats.
“Hopefully the Durham University students will be down and supporting and will bring a bit of energy as well - and push us on to get something out of the game if we can.”
And for Christon, while there are some nerves, the club’s track-record in these fixtues is something of a comfort. “I’m a bit nervous! “But we always tend to do well against those big teams. “We’re the underdogs once again and we’ll try and prove them, and everyone else who is expecting us to lose, wrong.” 13

MATCH REPORT Durham Women claimed a deserved victory over Sunderland in the first North East derby of the season. Beth Hepple and Mollie Lambert found the net in the second half as the Wildcats left Eppleton Colliery Welfare with all three points. Durham made just one change from the side that beat Lewes last weekend as Kathryn Hill returned in place of Danielle Brown. And it was the visitors who threatened first after winning a free-kick on the edge of the area – only for the wall to block her low effort. But as the half wore on, Sunderland began to create chances with Neve Herron forcing Megan Borthwick into a fine low stop after a corner wasn’t fully cleared. Emily Scarr then sent an effort looping over the bar after a lightning quick break and it was on the counter where the Black Cats looked to mount their attacks. Durham, meanwhile, were seeing plenty of the ball but struggling to carve out chances – although Lauren Briggs did drill wide after a mazy run while Bridget Galloway saw a volley blocked at the source. And there would be one big chance for either team before the break with Lambert denied by Claudia Moan after a defensive mix-up from the hosts, before Scarr fired straight at Borthwick after wrig-
gling into space in the box. The second half continued in much of the same vein with Durham seeing more of the ball – and with the sun now behind them, the quality of their attacking play vastly improved. It was no surprise, therefore, when it was the visitors who took the lead. After Faye Mullen bundled Lambert over on the edge of the box, Hepple stepped-up to curl a free-kick into the bottom corner. From there on out, it was Durham who carved out the best of the chances. Hepple again came close with a powerful strike from the edge of the box that was held by Moan, before the Sunderland stopper had to claw substitute Abby Holmes’ cross out from under the bar. A second would eventually come as the game ticked into its final 15 minutes, with Emily Roberts threading in Lambert who lofted the ball over Moan and in from 20 yards out. Sunderland applied plenty of pressure late on but failed to seriously test Borthwick, while Lambert almost added a third when her low drive was pushed around the post by Moan. But two goals were enough for Durham, who continued their promising form of late.

JOHN MIDDLETON TUNE-IN TO LIVE COVERAGE OF TODAY’S GAME ON DHRADIO.ORG.UK WITH JOHN AND PHILL DAVISON Greetings from the back of the (packed) stand! What a week! This promises to be one we’ll look back on for a long time. I write this on Sunday evening, shortly after our visit down the road. It was a privilege to be at there for the derby win; an excellent performance, patient in the first half, some great goals in the second and the experience and ability to soak up any pressure or attack that came our way. It wasn’t easy, but a great victory and back to the top of the Table! Now comes the small distraction of the Cup! I can guess what the main priority for the club is this year and it isn’t a Cup run; although it would be nice for all concerned. A match against a side higher up, under the lights, it is an occasion that memories can be made for us as supporters and for the players; especially if we, as underdogs, “cause an upset.”
quoted by many as a favourite game. Today will be different. We’re are, through experience and improvement in all areas of the club, better than 2018; they are also better, with a couple of WSL seasons under their belt. There’s a full house; buoyed by a derby win. A team with nothing to lose, “the underdogs”, ready to give their all (as usual) for their teammates and supporters. I can’t wait! Enjoy the game and, if can, please tune in via our website for commentary. Let’s hear the Wildcat Roar! John @JADMiddy
It is rare these days we can call ourselves “underdogs” but I think we can on tonight, and in the group we find ourselves in for this competition. Although, as I’m sure has been mentioned elsewhere (and will undoubtably be in commentary), we all remember the last time we met - our visitors, having just beaten us in this competition by one goal, a few days before, lost quite convincingly - a game that has gone down in Durham folklore, often

THE VISITORS MANCHESTER UNITED HEAD COACH: MARC SKINNER NICKNAME: THE RED DEVILS HOME GROUND: LEIGH SPORTS VILLAGE LAST SEASON: 4TH IN BARCLAYS FA WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE LAST TIME WE MET: W 3-1 Durham Women’s Continental Cup campaign kicks-off with a visit from one of the biggest names in football - Manchester United.
class establishment should do, have a plan in place and a time-frame for that plan,” he said, speaking to Sky Sports recently.
The Red Devils are no strangers to the North East, of course, having previously visited New Ferens Park during the 2018/19 season. What followed was a memorable victory for the Wildcats as an Amy Turner own goal and strikes from Beth Hepple and Zoe Ness saw Durham claim a 3-1 win.
“There were some wonderful achievements in such a short time-frame. What the club – specifically John Murtough and Steve Deaville – have done from there is go into the heavy planning phase and [ask] what do we need to do now to support the growth of our women to make them a world class, high performing outfit?
But Manchester United have grown exponentially since that campaign, which was their first in the FA Women’s Championship.
“That’s the reason we came in, to take the development on. You would love a new facility to be built overnight, but you need planning permission and finances. All of these are now put in place for growth and we’re starting to see the plans of that.”
Having won the league during that term, the North West side have now established themselves as a real force in the top flight and narrowly missed out on European football last season. A host of exciting players have been signed including the likes of Ona Battle, Vilde Boa Risa and Hannah Blundell - and the club have shown no sign of stopping there. Indeed, new head coach Marc Skinner recently opened up on the plans in place to establish the Red Devils as a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. “A club like Manchester United, as any top world 28
It’s been a mixed start to the campaign for Skinner’s side, who comfortably beat Reading and Leicester City before then falling to a heavy defeat against Chelsea. Fresh off a win over Birmingham and last weekend’s Manchester Derby, United will be looking to lay down a marker in what is sure to be a competitive group in the Continental Cup - with Everton, Manchester City and Leicester no doubt keen on progressing to the latter stages of the tournamnet.

DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR REGIONAL TALENT CLUB! Our RTC U14s and U16s hosted York City RTC for our first time back at the Racecourse Ground this season. We saw a brilliant comeback for our U14s who turned it around to win 5-4 and our U16s who held out for a 2-0 win.
Cestria faced a tough battle away at top of the table, Leeds United. After a difficult first half we were 4-1 down at the break but with a hatrick from Jordan Atkinson and a brace from Ellen Turnbull we managed to pull it back to 5-5 at full-time, a well fought point on the road. Success also came in from our U23s with a 9-1 win over Barnsley, a hatrick from Chloe Ryan, Jaz Elliot-Wood and goals from Cassie Donald, Bex Henderson and Becca Bell.

PALATINATE
FROM THE PRESS BOX
PALATINATE GEORGE SIMMS OF PALATINATE SPORT TAKES A LOOK AT THE WOMEN’S GAME IN THE REGION... At just over 140 miles away, Manchester City are currently the closest WSL team to Newcastle. This has been the case since Sunderland Ladies’ 2018 demotion to the National League North.
This weekend’s meeting between the Lady Black Cats and the Wildcats saw 865 fans in attendance, which only looks to be scratching the surface of the potential support for women’s football in the area.
However, with Sunderland Ladies back in the Championship alongside the Wildcats, with a chance of being joined by Newcastle in the near future, this could change very quickly.
As more football fans join the women’s game in Newcastle, they’ll be followed by counterparts from local cities like Durham and Sunderland. There will also be a surge in support when one of these teams (hopefully the Wildcats!) makes it into the WSL. We could be set for a huge decade for women’s football in the North East.
Amidst the chaos of last week’s takeover, not much has been written about Amanda Staveley’s pledge to invest into Newcastle’s currently fourth-tier women’s side. With Durham top of the Women’s Championship and Sunderland now back in the league after Kyril-Louis Dreyfus’ pledge to revive their women’s side, women’s football in the North East is looking better than ever.
FOLLOW PALATINATE Follow Palatinate’s coverage of Durham Women FC through the 2021/22 season by visiting palatinate.org.uk.
It’s not impossible to see a WSL only three or four years into the future where a quarter of the teams are from the North East. 46
