I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Dean Davenport, Paula Johnson and all the players, staff and officials from Palace. It was great to get off the mark at Leicester last weekend. In the second half we really pushed ourselves and it was surprising the fitness levels the players showed, given the challenging pre-season that we had. Scoring five goals so early on is a big positive for us. It was a good first goal, with Jordan making an immediate impact with the assist and a good finish - but to concede so quickly in the manner we did was disappointing of course. But to go on in the manner we did and score four more is fantastic - especially when one of your substitutes comes on and scores two. It was a shame for Leicester as it looked like their goalkeeper picked up a bad injury and, we’ve had the rub of the green because of that. But at the end of the day, you have to take these opportunities when they’re presented and we did that - which was pleasing. The new signings all hit the ground running at Leicester which was good to see. Obviously Megan Bell got the first goal which was great for her on her competitive debut. Molly Sharpe then came on and completely turned the game on its head with two great goals. Iris Achterhof was extremely
unlucky not to score, but the Leicester defence did their job well because they seemed to get across her just as she was ready to shoot. But her work rate created so much for the team and kept us on the front foot all the time. She’ll get the goals, I’m sure of that. We’re not going to get carried away with one win, though. We just want to do as well as we can in the league this season. We’ve got new players and they need the time to bed in. I’ve said it before, but if you look at the recruitment that Sheffield United and Aston Villa have done then they’re the favourites for the league in my book. It’s their’s to lose, truthfully. We’ll just keep chipping away throughout the season and do the best we can. Crystal Palace today will be a tough test. We know a few of their players and they’ve signed some really good, strong players. Obviously today sees Annabel Johnson come back to New Ferens Park and we know she’s going to be a tough opponent herself. It will be great to see all our fans back at New Ferens Park today - and a special mention to superfan Harry Tidbury who made the journey to Leicester last week. It’s great to see people who began supporting us back at the beginning now coming to away games. Thanks as always for your support, Lee Sanders

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Crystal Palace. It was great to register a win against Leicester last week. The first game of the season is always exciting - you want to get off to a good start and especially being away from home, it was great for us to come away with all three points. It was a slow start for us, Leicester made it tough and put the pressure on from the off. We played some good stuff but struggled with the end product. Then in the second half we stepped it up a gear. Getting four different people on the score sheet is so positive. We were clinical and need to make sure we continue with that to give ourselves the best chance. We did well to press from the front which paid off. We were disappointed to concede a goal straight after scoring in the first half. That’s something we will look and work on, but overall defensively as a team we were solid. Pre-season has been tough, but the girls have worked incredibly hard. We did pick up some injuries
along the way which isn’t ideal but we’ve stuck together and made sure the prep has been the best it possibly can be. Last week was the perfect start for all our new signings, Iris did everything right against Leicester and credit to them they defended her well. Megan impressed with the opening goal and assisting two, For Molly to come off the bench and put two away was great, and Holly gave us more options going forward and driving at the back four. They’ve slotted into the group well, I’m exciting to see them develop. Today we face Crystal Palace. They have made some great signings, adding to an already strong squad so we’re expecting a battle. It’s always a really tough test between the two teams. We’re excited to be back in front of our own fans today, and the turn out against Everton in pre season was fantastic. We’re lucky to have so many dedicated fans, some even travelling to our away games! We are so grateful for the support and we hope you enjoy the game today! Sarah Wilson

Crystal Palace will be hoping they can improve on their previous campaign where they picked up just 11 points and three wins, with the added threat of relegation looming in the upcoming season.
CRYSTAL PALACE
VISITORS
Manager Dean Davenport has brought in a host of signings, perhaps most notably 27-year-old attacker Bianca Baptiste, who ended an 11-year stint with Tottenham Hotspur to join the Eagles on a one-year-deal. If a formidable attacking partnership can be formed between Baptiste and other marquee signing and Irish international Cherelle Khassal, it will surely benefit Palace’s aims of a higher finish this season. The south London club got their campaign underway at home to Coventry United, and had the opportunity to state their intent for the season by taking the wind out of the recently promoted side. Veteran midfielder Ashlee Hincks was voted as the club’s Player of the Season after her debut campaign in the Championship and Davenport will be hoping for more of the same this time around.
Ahead of the season, new signing Leeta Rutherford said: “Dean put in an approach for me at the right time, and I spoke to him during the off season. “He told me what he had to offer and the ambitions he had at the club were what I wanted, so it was no-brainer for me. “The ambition of the club, it’s got great fans, great backing, all they want to do is go higher and that’s what I want to do this season. “I’m a true believer you can never set your aims high enough. I always want to achieve better, and I know there’s more in me and that’s part of my move to Palace. “I know Dean as a manager and he will get the best out of me: that’s what I need.” Hincks added: “Last season’s disappointment is definitely something we need to learn from and remember. “We started off the season well but then had a huge blip where we weren’t picking up any points, losing games by one goal, and it was just quite frustrating.”

Coventry United got their first taste of FA Women’s Championship action with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Hayes Lane.
LAST TIME OUT
The visitors, who were making their debut in the second-tier, showed little signs of nerves as they took the game to their opponents early on before Palace fought back in a lively VISITORS opening-day contest. Both sides created numerous opportunities with Freya Holdaway and Cherelle Khassal coming the closest for the hosts as they pushed for a winner late on but their attempts came to no avail. Amber Hughes had the first chance for Coventry in the tenth minute, but after driving at the Palace defence could only fire straight at Lucy Gillett, whilst Rea Laudat wasted a good shooting opportunity at the other end, blazing over the bar from close-range. Palace took a while to get going but once they turned the screw they went close with a few decent scoring opportunities.
Firstly, Laudat’s first touch let her down when clean through after she was wonderfully picked out by out by Ashlee Hincks and then Hincks had a chance of her own just before the break, but failed to hit the target when one-on-one with Wood after Gillett’s bouncing goal kick was misjudged by Nikki Miles. The half-time whistle didn’t stop Palace in their tracks and they almost took the lead in the 58th minute, but Khassal’s looping volley landed the wrong side of the post. And the hosts went even closer ten minutes later, but Holdaway saw her flicked effort blocked on the line by Wood before Coventry cleared the resulting goal-mouth scramble that occurred. Palace came within inches of grabbing an 86th minute winner, but Khassal couldn’t apply the finishing touch after Hincks super cross from the right narrowly evaded her. 0-0 was how it ended though, with the spoils shared at Bromley.

Annabel Johnson
A familiar face, having spent three seasons with the Wildcats, Johnson joined Palace this summer and brings with her a raft of experience and quality.

Lucy Gillett Ashlee Hincks
A proven goalscorer in the second tier, Hincks impressed for Palace last season after joining from Millwall. She’ll be looking to hit the goal trail again this term.
The former Brighton stopper brings experience of WSL 1 and - having signed for Palace on a permanent basis this summer - looks set to be a key player.

Greetings from the back of the stand! After an injury-hit pre-season, changes in personnel, and on the back of a fantastic World Cup, it is great to at last welcome in the new season at New Ferens Park. As usual the Summer has flown by and it doesn’t seem two minutes since we were watching Spurs receive their medals and congratulations for their promotion. Two minutes since a narrow loss against a side who will be enjoying life in the top tier; a place where we must be one of the favourites to follow them to this season. It has been an interesting break looking in to our team from the outskirts. We’ve some exciting signings come in and some Wildcat legends depart; together with injuries etc you’d be forgiven for thinking that we may struggle at the beginning of the season. I, for one, followed last week’s game at Leicester with more nerves than usual but what a way to settle them! We welcome Crystal Palace this afternoon and hope we can continue our bright start. It was this time last year when they last visited and put up a good fight especially in the
first half. Having lived in South-East London, passing Selhurst Park everyday on my way to school, this is the first fixture I look for. The pre-season nerves have gone but we have to keep our feet on the ground, today’s tough game will help. Chances may be few and far between but patience doesn’t hurt. I’m certainly looking forward to picking up the microphone this afternoon and the rest of the season, bringing commentary to our patients and other listeners around the world. Thank you to Lee, Dawn and Mark at the club and the FA for granting us permission. As in previous seasons, I hope that you and others (please tell them!) will be able to join us. Enjoy the game! A second half rampage from Durham Women saw them claim victory at Leicester City on the opening day of the FA Women’s Championship season.
interval.
A brace from substitute Molly Sharpe and strikes from Megan Bell, Lisa Robertson and Becky Salicki sealed convincing victory – with Libby Smith’s strike merely a consolation.
Achterhof came close to pulling the visitors ahead, but her powerful effort was parried by Demi Lambourne – who was forced to withdraw due to injury as a result.
Lee Sanders handed debuts to summer signings Jordan Atkinson, Iris Achterhof and Bell – and it was the latter who would open the scoring at Farley Way.
And her replacement, Scarlett Field, had to pick the ball out the net immediately after entering the fray as she was beaten by Lisa Robertson’s stunning long-range drive.
The Northern Irish international slotted home after just seven minutes following a clever cut-back from Jordan Atkinson to hand the Wildcats the lead.
It was three shortly after, Salicki scrambling home from close range after Robson and Sarah Wilson nodded on a corner.
But parity was restored just two minutes later as Smith tapped home from close range after Hayley James’ drive across the face of goal came back off the post. Durham continued to push forward in search of a second, with Nicki Gears seeing a near-post drive pushed around the post before Bell saw an effort hacked off the line by Nat Johnson after she had seized on a lapse in concentration.
But it was a different story after the interval, as the Wildcats dictated the proceedings from the restart.
There was time for two more goals too – first Sharpe leapt highest to power a header home after Bell’s teasing free-kick. And the same combination added a fifth, with Bell threading in Sharpe for a calm finish past Field to wrap up a convincing win. Durham XI: Borthwick, Hill, Robertson, Wilson, Robson, Gears, Achterhof, Bell, Salicki, Christon, Atkinson
Sarah Robson and Iris Achterhof then both brushed the post with headers, as the two teams went in level at the
