Welcome back to New Ferens Park as we prepare to welcome Oxford United Women this afternoon! It seems a long time since we were last here in DH1, even though we’ve only played once since our last home game! Our last outing here ended in a 1-0 win over Sheffield. Our games against the South Yorkshire side are always close-fought affairs so to grind out that win was extremely important. We followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Watford which was a good point considering the conditions and saw us cement our place at the top of the league. This week saw us hold our annual Vision for Education Schools’ Tournament which is always a good afternoon, it’s great to have so many schools down playing, and we hope some of their students are here today! FROM THE DUGOUT
LEE SANDERS Good afternoon and welcome to New Ferens Park for what is sure to be an entertaining game. A warm welcome to Andy, Ruth and all of the staff, players and officials from Oxford United Women here today. How pleased were you with that hard-fought 1-0 win over Sheffield in our last home game? Sheffield are always a tough team and always will be they’ve got experienced, committed and talented players and it’s always going to be a battle. To grind out that 1-0 win again was great and credit to the players for the way they performed on the day and to Nat Gutteridge for getting that goal. It was quick thinking from Becky Salicki with the throw and a great cross from Zoe Ness and Guttsy was on the spot where you want her to be to put it home. That was followed by the trip to Watford which ended in a 1-1 draw - what were your thoughts on that game? I think you’ve always got to be happy when you take some points from an away game, but at the same time we can’t help thinking it was two points dropped. That wasn’t down to the players’ efforts as they dealt with a number of difficult conditions on the day. In different circumstances we might have come away with all three points, but we didn’t and we move on. That point saw us move to the top of the FA WSL 2 table. Do you feel there’s a bit of a target on our backs now? We’re still unbeaten and we’re top of the league. There’s still some really difficult games left to play but we’re in a good place. I don’t think being top has put a target on, that target will have been there from the start based on how we performed last year. People said last season we were a bit of a dark horse and we proved that by competing for promotion up to the end of the season. And rightly so, because of the players’ effort. If we are a target then I would rather be that than disregarded because that means people think we’re a threat. Today we host Oxford - what kind of test do you expect from them? We’ll be wary of every team in the FA WSL this season because results prove that you have to
be. Oxford have some real threats, the obvious one being Ini Umotong who was top scorer in the league last year and is an extremely talented player. I’m sure any manager would love to have her in their side. They’ve also got some great young talent in Demi Lambourne, the goalkeeper, and there’s quality throughout their squad. They’ve got a new manager in Andy Cook, who I’m sure will work extremely hard to coach the girls the way he wants them to play and get the best out of them. We welcome back Nicki Gears into the squad today. How big a boost will her return be? Nicki Gears is back in the squad this weekend, and Dan Lonsdale and Dave Irvine have done a great job with her rehab. It’s been a year since she last played and it’s nice to say she’s lost none of her pace! It’s nice to have that different option in the squad and she was very effective last season. We’re hoping to ease her back in during the Spring Series and we’re delighted to have her back in the squad and competing for a place. Lauren Briggs has made first team appearances in the last two games, what have you made of her progress? Lauren Briggs has come into the first team squad from the development team and is someone who, aside from a short break away, has been with us for a long time and played with a number of our other players. She’s had some long lay-offs with injury and came back to the club midway through last season to continue her rehab and got some game time in the reserve team and the development team and all the
reports have been good. She’s now got some minutes with the first team and we’re happy to see her back playing. Our two other sides - the Development and Reserve Teams - are enjoying success at the moment which must be great for the club? The Development Team are doing well currently and they’re unbeaten in 2017 and the Reserve Team, which is a team we started from scratch in the County League, have now won two promotions in the last three years up to North East Premier level for next season. The aim is to have them in the FA WPL North. That’s the challenge for the club within the next two or three years. In order to do that we might have to bring a bit more experience in as it’s a youthful squad and that’s some recruitment work we’ll do over the summer. It’s a fantastic achievement for us to earn promotion this season so well done to all the players and staff who contributed. How important is it that we make New Ferens Park a fortress this season? We want to make New Ferens Park a difficult place for teams to come to. The fans can enhance this massively as a place where teams come with more hope of picking something up than expectation. Thanks for attending today, and I hope to see you back here when we welcome Brighton on 23rd April. Lee Sanders
THE SKIPPER
SARAH WILSON
Welcome back to New Ferens Park for our third game of the FA WSL Spring Series, as we welcome Oxford! Looking back to out last home game, it was a great win against Sheffield. The games between us are always close, we knew it was going to be a really tough test. We struggled to break Sheffield down in the first half but our second half performance was dominant. In this league you’re never going to walk over any side, that’s why its so important to take every chance. Being able to grind out the wins in the manner in which we have been doing shows the resilience throughout the squad. Obviously we know we need to be scoring more goals but that will come.
It was a good point on the board against Watford. We went there to take the win but credit to Watford we struggled to break them down. The conditions throughout that game were terrible for both sides. We had dominant spells, and they pressed us at times, a draw was probably fair for both teams on the day. We’re obviously very happy to be sitting top of the table but we know we still have a lot of work to do. We need to tighten up all over the pitch and be more clinical. We want to go all the way with this Spring Series and get the best possible preparation moving forward. We have shown last season and so far this year that we’re not just here to make up the numbers.
Today is going to be a very tough test for us. We have had a couple of weeks to prepare for this game which has been helpful. We are aware of the threats that Oxford bring with them, however its important that we don’t get caught up in that. We have to focus on our game and getting things right from the start. I’m confident that the girls will give absolutely everything as always. We’ve had a great start to this Spring Series, but we still have work to do! So far we have picked up some excellent results and we want to continue to build on that. We have a brilliant team working behind the scenes to support us all the way, and the support so far has been incredible! Sarah Wilson

INTRODUCING OUR VISITORS
OXFORD UNITED WOMEN Oxford United Ladies were founded in the early 90’s, and despite only a loose affiliation to the club they achieved some notable successes. In 2008 there was a full integration of the women’s programme into the football club which coincided with the introduction of the girls’ Centre of Excellence programme. This formed Oxford United’s first female development pathway with a clear progression from grass roots through to the women’s first team. Since 2008 the women’s development program has achieved a number of honours, we have had players from our Centre of Excellence and first team represent England through all age groups from Under 15’s to Under 23’s. We also had representation at last year’s World University Games where the Women’s Football won Gold. Currently we have seventeen ladies players that have progressed from the Centre of Excellence into the Women’s programme. Oxford United’s Development Squad have continued to progress well through the footballing pyramid since they were restructured in 2008 with promotion from Thames Valley league through to the Southern Region, including achieving promotion twice and Jubilee Cup winners and they now play their football in the WSL Development League.
Honours Oxfordshire FA Cup 2011, 2012, 2013
Since the integration into the club, Oxford United Women’s First Team have had continuous success, with back-to-back promotions and successive league titles. They have also won three Oxfordshire Senior Cups and two League Cups. The season 2012/2013 was probably the most successful for our teams. The First team for the third consecutive year won the Oxfordshire Women’s Senior Cup and also won the South West Combination Women’s League, winning promotion.
SRWFL Premier 2011/12
The continued success of the club was rewarded at the end of the 2012/2013 season as the club were granted a licence for the new FA WSL2 league.

DURHAM: Laws; Johnson, Wilson, Salicki, Jennings; Gutteridge, Lee, Hepple; Atkinson, Roberts, Ness Sunday 12th March 12pm FA WSL 2 Spring Series Gaywood Park, Kings Langley
Durham Women maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a draw against Watford Ladies. In testing conditions, the Wildcats battled through the first half before taking the lead through Emily Roberts ten minutes after the break. But the lead was short lived as Rinsola Babajdie equalised only minutes later, with Durham unable to find another goal despite a host of chances. Lee Sanders handed a debut to goalkeeper Rachael Laws in the FA WSL Spring Series game, and the ex-Sunderland stopper was called into action early on as she had to smother at the feet of Charlotte Kerr after she had broken through on goal. After something of a nervy start, the Wildcats grew in confidence with Beth Hepple stinging the palms of Gillet from distance before Zoe Ness fired wide. Durham were seeing more of the ball and had a strong penalty shout turned down when Rachel Lee was bundled over in the area, with Ness then firing into the side netting after some neat build-up. The hosts weren’t without their threats, however, with Kerr again finding herself one-on-one with Laws but slotting wide. As the conditions worsened both sides were struggling to create chances and went in at half-time goalless, with Durham then starting the second period strongly with Hepple firing narrowly over and Gillet saving from Ness. The breakthrough eventually came on 55 minutes, with Roberts controlling a pass on the edge of the area before sending her low shot into the corner. Celebrations were cut short, though, by an act of brilliance from Babajide who levelled only three minutes after as he curled over Laws from distance and found the top corner. Durham were keen to respond and had plenty of chances to retake the lead - Lee drilling just wide of the far post and Hepple firing straight at Gillet from a tight angle. Better chances were still to come, with Wilson seeing a header hacked off the line before Watford managed to clear a goalmouth scramble as Roberts, Lee and Ness looked to force the ball home. The Wildcats were forced to settle for a point, however, on what was a testing afternoon in Hertfordshire.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
BECKY SALICKI In our new programme feature, we get to know the people behind the players by asking them some fun questions! Up next is defender Becky Salicki.... Talk us through your footballing debut. The first time I played for Sunderland at senior level was a last minute call-up! I think a lot of the girls were away on holiday with Uni or something like that, and Mick (Mulhern) gave me a ring and asked if I could play. I played left back and it was an FA Cup game which we won. It was pretty surreal to be fair and a really nice moment. What do you do on a long away trip? Chat absolute rubbish and get tortured the whole journey! I’m the team DJ so I just try and create a good playlist for the way down. What’s the best live concert you’ve ever been to? Beyonce or Bruno Mars, he was pretty wicked as well. It’s a tough one between those two but I’d have to say Beyonce edged it. If you’re going to treat yourself to a takeaway, what do you have? Chinese, I’d have it every day if I wouldn’t become fat off it! What’s the best place you’ve ever been on holiday? Mexico or the Carribean. Anywhere that has nice weather! Where in the world haven’t you been, but would like to go? I’d like to go to New Zealand or Australia. I’ve done the west side of Australia so may try the east side! What’s your favourtie film? I like Slumdog Millionaire or Walk the Line. They’re good. What’s your favourite song of all time? Beyonce - Formation. Obviously. Who would you trust with a secret in the dressing room? Probably Wilson or Beth. What’s the best ground you’ve ever played at? I played on Man City Women’s pitch and that was pretty good or Brammal Lane, that was decent as well.
Who’s the best player you’ve played with? Probably Jordan Nobbs, she’s always been an absolute machine ever since she was a kid and I’ve played with her since I was about 8. She’s always been one of the best players in every team I’ve been in with her. Who’s the funniest person in the squad? Currently? Seeing as Aldo’s gone I won’t say her because everyone said her. Meg Borthwick, she’s hilarious and comes out with some unreal one liners. You’re trapped on a dessert island and can take only three items - what would you take? I’d take a football, my Mam and Bear Grylls! What three words would you use to describe yourself? Passionate, loyal and daft. What three words would you use to describe Lee Sanders? Passionate, loyal and daft!!

SUPPORT SHORTY! We've got your staff LEE IN ICELAND training and apprenticeship delivery covered
Midfielder Rachel Lee (Shorty) is fundraising for the Brain Research Trust by running the Reykjavik half marathon in Iceland on April 22nd. Rachel is running on behalf of The Brain Research Trust, who fund research into treatment for conditions such as; Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease. We asked Rachel a few questions about her upcoming challenge... Are you looking forward to the event? Yeah, it’s my first international half marathon so it’s exciting and a good opportunity. It is hard work leading up to and training for the event but it will be worthwhile on
the day. I’m a little worried about how cold it will be though! Why have you chosen the Brain Research Trust? The BRT are a brilliant charity who support research into many different brain and nervous system conditions which affect so many people. They look at developing treatment and ultimately finding cures for the conditions mentioned above. I am fundraising and running on behalf of my friend Taylor, who is currently living with Motor Neurone Disease, so I like to try and raise the profile of the Brain Research Trust and particularly MNDA on his behalf. He continues to be a total inspiration to myself and so many others, so he is my reason for running.
What time are you aiming for? Anything under 2 hours! Hopefully around the 1 hour 50 mark but I will honestly just be happy to complete it and hopefully raise the profile and some money for the BRT along the way. So if you can’t think of anything worse than running for 2 hours solid hopefully you can support and sponsor me instead. If you would like to sponsor Rachel or wish her well you can visit her fundraising page or her Twitter using the details below! Good luck Shorty! THE PRESS BOX
Greetings from the back of the stand! Here we are, unbeaten and top of the League/ Series (or whatever is the appropriate term!). Does that bring more or less pressure? I hope that we can enjoy it; you can never rely on it happening again, but that’s the beauty of the game we love. Our position is well deserved because, and I don’t want to sound all X-Factor-y, of the journey the club has been on and all the hardwork that has gone on for years.
Whatever happens in the ‘Spring Series’, the team has a good basis for the WSL season ahead. Goals are coming from all over the pitch and our defence is standing firm. Oxford will be no pushovers; last time here was a tight game and I expect it will be again. It all bodes well for an exciting commentary! Hopefully you’ll tune-in via www.dhradio.org.uk and clicking the ‘listen live’ button, on your Smartphone.
We’ve been lucky enough to be joined by Grace McCatty for the last two matches bringing some quality insight from the inside; we are very grateful to Grace and Mark for that. Let us know if you are listening and spread the word! Looking forward to hearing the “Wildcat Roar”! John Middleton @JADMiddy
