Ahead of today’s game with Sunderland, we sat down with manager Lee Sanders to preview the game.
How important was it that we bounced back from the disappointing Brighton defeat in our last outing against Watford? We were really pleased with the win against Watford, particularly the second half performance. We had a different week at training and looked at and analysed the past few games a bit more in terms of what we needed to do. We emphasised what we were doing well at the end of the week and that worked well.
Obviously we’re delighted with the clean sheet and that was something we had touched on and wanted to improve. Helen Alderson did well with a couple of saves and we were hard to break down. In the second half, we played through the thirds, played some good football and scored some great goals. Zoe Ness has looked lively all season and scored a great first goal before assisting the second and I’m delighted Abi Cottam got her first for the club. Beth Hepple was able to continue her fine personal form and it was great to see Kathryn Hill get on the scoresheet too. Today sees us face Sunderland - what kind of game are you expecting? It’s a good opportunity to test ourselves against a WSL 1 side. We’re expecting a really tough test from Sunderland as they have some quality players. They’re used to playing WSL 1 teams week in week out now and are doing very well in the league. It’s a local derby so both teams will be well up for it. We’ve got to back ourselves and at the moment we’re quite happy to take on any level of opposition. It’s been two years since the sides last met competitively - how interesting will it be to face our North East rivals once again? It’ll be interesting to see how the sides have progressed. Form kind of goes out the
We’ve been supporting Breast Cancer Awareness all week - how pleased are you that the club can support such causes? I think it’s really important that we’re able to support great causes like this. It’s something that’s affected a number of players and staff’s families at the club, both in the past and more recent times. We would love everybody to support anything that goes on tonight and donate where they can. It’s an important charity to get behind and the people who do work in it do a tremendous job. What are your hopes for the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup this season? It gives us an opportunity to play some different opposition and we’ll just take the competition one game at a time, starting with tonight. It’ll be interesting because if there are draws it will be decided on the night so there’s potentially the added excitement of penalties too! We just have to focus on tonight’s game and we’ll see where we are after that and reasses ahead of the next game against Sheffield. But it’ll also be great to get teams like Liverpool up to New Ferens Park later on in the competition. Thank you as always for your tremdnous support, and I hope to see you back at New Ferens Park on 5th November when we welcome Liverpool Ladies. Lee Sanders
Manager Lee Sanders speaks to The Wildcat!
To go out and deal with the pressure from Watford in the first 30 minutes was fantastic and then our second half performance was a testament to how much the players wanted to right the wrongs from Brighton.
We’ll hope for a big crowd tonight - how big of a role can they play? Hopefully we can attract a lot of interest in the build-up to the game and get a good crowd in. I’m sure Sunderland will bring a lot of fans with them too. We ask again for our supporters to get behind the girls and be that twelfth player.
FROM THE DUGOUT
I’d like to welcome Melanie Reay and all the players, staff and officials from Sunderland Ladies to New Ferens Park this evening and I hope they have an enjoyable evening at our ground!
window in a game like this but our form is similar having both won two from three, albeit in different leagues. There’s a lot of the players who know eachother or will have played with eachother and they’ll want to play for personal pride as well as the pride of the club. We’ll be treating it as any other game and we want to perform well. I believe we’ve got a squad of players that are capable of doing that but we need to be on the top of our game. It should be a great game for the supporters of both clubs to watch. It’s been a while since we played eachother competitively so it’s great when these occassions come up.
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Sunderland Ladies.
Sarah Wilson gives her viewso on today’s game!
THE SKIPPER
It was great to bounce back with a win against Watford after the Brighton game. We were so disappointed with the loss andwe worked hard in training on what went wrong for us and made sure to get things right. Of course it was pleasing to get a clean sheet as, for the defence and the goalkeeper, it means we’ve done our job. The team worked hard for it. Credit to Helen Alderson, she made some excellent saves to keep us in the game at times. I was really pleased to see Abi Cottam get her first goal, she’s been working incredibly hard and that payed off. Hopefully there’s many more to come for her. And for Kathryn Hill, we know that goal meant a lot to her. It was important that we worked out what went wrong at Brighton, not to dwell on it, get it right in training and put it into
practice during the game. We did some work off the pitch on problem solving which paid off. It’s a huge part of the game now and we’re fortunate to be able to do it. We’re expecting a tough test against Sunderland this evening and we know what they’re capable of. They play good football, keep the ball well and have good movement. It’s exciting to be playing in a local derby and it’s a great advert for Women’s Football in the North East. Hopefully it will be a great atmosphere off the pitch for the supporters too, who have been amazing so far. The cup gives us a chance to test ourselves against higher level opposition, it’s good to test ourselves to see where we stand. We want to be playing at the top level so it’s an opportunity to gain experience in doing so.

A LEAGUE OF OUR OWN
MEET OUR VISITORS SUNDERLAND LADIES
Formed in 1999, Sunderland AFC Ladies have been at the top of women’s football in the north-east for the majority of their existence. The club was formed when East Durham Houghall Kestrels and Sunderland Ladies combined to come under the umbrella of ‘Sunderland Women’. Prior to this, their roots lay in Tyneside with Blyth Spartans Kestrels. Since the merger Sunderland Women have consistently performed to a very high standard; playing four seasons in the Northern Division and six seasons in the Women’s Premier League. In their opening two seasons, Sunderland Women finished runners-up in the Northern Division, only just missing promotion to the Premier League on both occasions. The following campaign saw Sunderland secure promotion to the Premier League, winning the Northern Division by six points and, for the first time in their history, they reached the quarter finals of the Women’s FA Cup. After retaining their top-flight status in 2006, the Lady Black Cats were relegated after the 2006-07 campaign – resulting in multiple international stars leaving the club. A third place finished followed in the Northern Division as Sunderland sought a return to the top-flight, a feat they would achieve in 2009. Arguably the club’s most successful season to date followed, with the club gaining an increased local and national profile. Sunderland Women were runners-up in the FA Women’s Cup after losing 2-1 to National Premier League Champions, Arsenal.
Mick Mulhern’s side also received the E.ON Team of the Round Award twice before securing their promotion back to the National Premier League. Mulhern won the division’s Manager of the Year award before receiving the Tesco Manager of the Year at the FA Women’s Football Awards. The Lady Black Cats achieved a respectable fifth place finish in 2009 before winning the FA Women’s National Premier League for the first time in their history whilst also reaching the quarter-finals of both the League Cup and Women’s FA Cup. Now exerting their dominance on the women’s game in the north, Sunderland won the FA Women’s Premier League for a second consecutive campaign whilst also adding the League Cup to their trophy cabinet. Mulhern, who was the longest serving manager in the women’s game, won the Manager of the Year award for a second time. In the 2012/13 season, the women secured their third consecutive title with striker Beth Mead winning the division’s top scorer award for a second consecutive campaign. The Lady Black Cats finally got their break into the Women’s Super League (WSL) ahead of the 2014 season after a sustained effort from everyone involved with the club. In September 2013, Sunderland Women’s Football Club were formally integrated as part of the Sunderland AFC structure. Sunderland Ladies won the FA WSL 2 league at the first attempt in 2014, clinching the title on the final day of the season with a 4-0 victory over Millwall Lionesses.

The Wildcats welcomed Watford Ladies to New Ferens Park as they aimed to bounce back from a disappointing performance and defeat at Brighton. Watford, meanwhile, were searching for a first win of the season after losing out to Millwall and Oxford in their opening games.
We look back at our victory over Watford Ladies!
MATCH RECAP
The visitors threatened first as Anneka Nuttall was acrobatically denied by Helen Alderson from 12 yards. The woodwork then came to Watford’s rescue twice in quick succession as Zoe Ness saw her pair of headers rebound off first the post and then the crossbar. But Ness wouldn’t be denied and she rose highest to power her header past Fran Kitching. Atkinson was the architect as she kept the ball in play before picking out the Scottish striker who did well to rise above the defence and plant her header beyond the despairing dive of Kitching. And that goal buoyed Durham who began the second half with a spell of strong pressure which culminated with Abi Cottam slotting home from close range to double the advantage after Ness had flicked on Sarah Wilson’s pass.
The one-way traffic continued and Durham deservedly had a third when Beth Hepple curled a free-kick from an acute angle over the helpless Kitching after the lively Nicki Gears had been tripped.
There was still time for a fourth too, as Kathryn Hill fired home from a corner to round-off a fine afternoon for the Wildcats and see them remain unbeaten at home in 2017. FT: Durham 4-0 Watford

From the back of the stand!
JOHN MIDDLETON
Greetings from the back of the stand! I hope you are ready for an exciting evening, one that a Cup tie always promises, not only that a local derby! Like me, I know that all at the club have been looking forward to this one since the fixtures were announced. Not only what promises to be a great match but another great crowd and another opportunity to gauge progress. I’m sure our top-tier visitors will experience a warm welcome and hope they enjoy the hospitality. We’ve witnessed many a local derby in our time and I have to say the ones between the two teams on show tonight are up there in the closest-stakes. Every year they get closer as Durham progress and improve - no longer the young relation! Just the other month they met behind closed door and our visitors won by a single goal. Durham go into this one full of confidence having run out 4-0 winners against an improving Watford side on Sunday. It could have been very different if not for some great saves by Aldo in the first half and the goal being slightly
wider for Zoe Ness who hit the woodwork twice before scoring. They never gave up and with a fantastic second half display were worthy winners. But, as we’re all aware, a Cup tie is a Cup tie and a local derby is a local derby. Form goes out the window! These and more Football clichés can be heard within our live commentary via www.dhradio. org.uk preceded by a first this evening - a bit of extra build-up with highlights from Sunday and interviews with Zoe Ness and Sarah Wilson. Hope you can join us inside and outside the ground from 7pm; let us know you’re listening and what you think! Enjoy the game! Let’s hear the “Wildcat Roar”!
