I’d like to welcome Karen Hills and all the players, staff and officials from Tottenham Hotspur to New Ferens Park this afternoon and I hope they have an enjoyable afternoon in the North East.
The summer has seen new players and coaches join the club - can you tell us a bit about them? We’ve welcomed two new members to the coaching staff in Jamie Knight who is our Strength & Conditioning Coach and Steph Libbey who is joining the main coaching team. We were concious of the quality we have retained in the squad and didn’t want to bring too many new faces in, but we’re delighted to welcome four new additions who have fitted in on and off the pitch. Kathryn Hill has come in and impressed from day one and is competitive. Abi Cottam has an impressive goalscoring record at her previous clubs and will bolster the options we have up front. Nicola Worthington is a fantastic player and had great experiences during her four years in America. And Ellis Dalgliesh is young but has plenty of experience from her time up at Celtic and with the Scotland youth set-up so I’m
We were awarded the FA WSL 2 Club of the Year Award a fortnight ago - how did that feel? We were all over the moon. It’s a fantastic achievement for everyone at the club and there’s a lot of people who do a great deal of work behind the scenes at the club and the award justified all the work they do. We’re improving every season on the pitch and we’re doing the same off it too with attendances and match day experiences as well as the social media content which we hope keeps fans engaged and encourages them to come and watch us. What are you expecting from Tottenham today? They’re a bit of an unknown. Obviously they’re new to the league but if you look at their record last season they went 27 games unbeaten and that’s a fantastic record. They’ve come into the league with a strong side but have improved it considerably with some good signings - including Sarah Wiltshire and Coral Haines who we know about and they are both technically excellent players. We had some great crowds last season, and how important can the fans be again this year? They can be massively important. We want to play entertaining football but we want to get a result at the end of the day. When times are tough, it’s sometimes the noise of the crowd that can drag the players through when we need them to. As always, please support the players and back them as you always do. Thank you as always for your tremdnous support, and I hope to see you back at New Ferens Park on 8th October when we welcome Watford Ladies. Lee Sanders
Manager Lee Sanders speaks to The Wildcat!
How have pre-season preparations gone ahead of the new season? Pre-season has been good. We’ve had a mix of opposition and gone away on a couple of trips to Scotland and Bristol so the girls have spent a lot of time together. We’ve upped the training days so we’re training more now than we have done in previous years. All the players have bought into accepting that we have to train more if we want to improve and push on to the next level and hopefully we’ll see the benefits of that in the forthcoming season.
excited to see what she can do.
FROM THE DUGOUT
Ahead of today’s game with Tottenham Hotspur, we sat down with manager Lee Sanders to preview the game.
Good afternoon and welcome to our first game of the FA WSL season!
Sarah Wilson gives her viewso on today’s game!
THE SKIPPER
I’d like to wish a warm welcome to the players, staff and fans who have travelled to the North East from Tottenham today - and of course welcome back to our own fans! I hope you all enjoy the game. We’re really looking to today’s game. It’s difficult in some senses because we don’t know a huge deal about Spurs and how they play. But I think the main thing is that we focus on our own game and put the things we have been working on during pre-season into practice. I have no doubt we’ll go for that result today. Pre-season has been good and it’s been nice to compete against the bigger teams to see how we’ve progressed as a team and individually. It’s also given us a great
opportunity collectively to gel as a group. We’ve got a few new faces in the squad this season and we’ve been able to get them on the pitch and see how things might pan out. The new girls have all fitted in really well. We’ve made some excellent additions to the squad and all of them are really great girls who fit into the group. I think that’s important because we want to grow together both on and off the pitch. Hopefully that comes across in the way we play. Our target this year has to be promotion. We want to win the league. We’ve been building up to it for the past couple of years and maybe this is our season. We’ll keep working and working to see if we can get there. Sarah Wilson

A LEAGUE OF OUR OWN
MEET OUR VISITORS TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Tottenham Hotspur Ladies are gearing up for their first-ever season in the FA Women’s Super League following a glorious 2016-17. Spurs ascended as the winners of the FA Women’s Premier League after comprehensively beating Blackburn Rovers in a promotion showdown at the Valley in May, earning a shot at the big time. Captain Jenna Schillaci and co were irrepressible in the FA WPL Southern Division last term, clinching the title in front of more than 2,000 supporters at White Hart Lane with a 4-0 win over West Ham United on April 19 – they were also unbeaten at the time. Spurs, who also won the league cup and were named FAWPL Club of the Year at last week’s FA Women’s Football Awards, went on to take on Northern Division champions Blackburn Rovers in a promotion play-off at the Valley in May and promptly romped to a 3-0 triumph.
Schillaci says that seeds were already being sewn for the future last term. “Last season, we changed a lot of our training because the aim was to get to the Super League,” said the centre-back, who can also play at left-back. “We adapted out training last season so that when it did come to it, we were prepared, so not much has changed in terms of training-loads. “I just think our fitness levels are up there. Mentally, last season, we nailed it – we had a lot of high-pressure matches. “It’s been a long journey for most of us. We’ve had a core group of players that have been at the club for over five years, so it’s been a journey we’ve been on together. “Cementing our name in the WSL 2 is what we’re aiming for.” Interview: fawsl.com

The Wildcats travelled to Aston Villa looking to round-off a successful Spring Series with a top two finish. But that was far from the sole focus, with changes in shape and personnel allowing the Wildcats to experiment ahead of the bread and butter of the 2017/18 season.
MATCH RECAP
We look back at our final game of the FA WSL Spring Series
But things started off badly for Durham as they fell behind with only six minutes on the clock - Villa centre back Jade Richards diverted a short corner routine past Megan Borthwick. It could have been two shortly after, but Tasha Baptiste could only find the side netting. After soaking up early pressure from their hosts, Durham hit back and levelled when a quick throw-in allowed Gibson to centre and Zoe Ness was on hand to tap home. And it could have been two moments later - Annabel Johnson side-footing wide at the far post. A second did come ten minutes before the break as Hepple played in Ness who made no mistake as she fired into the bottom corner. The Scottish striker then secured her hat-trick two minutes later with a similar finish after a fine solo run from Nicki Gears presented her with an opportunity. It got better for the Wildcats after the break - Gears tripped in the area with Beth Hepple smashing the resultant penalty into the roof of the net. But Villa bounced back with Richards timing her run to perfection to power home a header from Rouse’s corner. Lucy Shepherd fired across Borthwick to reduce to the deficit to one before Maddy Cusack equalised. Alys Hinchcliffe then completed the remarkable turnaround, turning in the area and slotting home. The awards, held at the Grosvenor Hotel on Park Lane, celebrated the best of women’s football in England after a year which saw the game grow both domestically and internationally.
“The sponsors who have been with us from day one - JW Wood, and I must thank Liam from Vision for Educatoon for the ongoing support and enthusiasm he gives to the club. “The coaches, physio, medical staff and players and fans have been fantastic in buying into where the club wants to be with ever improving performances on the pitch and rapidly growing attendances at games. All this contributes to this award.
And after enjoying a strong FA WSL Spring Series both on and off the pitch Durham Women were handed the FA WSL 2 Club of the Year prize. The Club of the Year award takes into account all aspects of the football club from on the pitch performance to coaching, player pathways, community work, partnerships, marketing and attendances. Our 5th place finish in the Spring Series was accompanied by an attendance rise of 23% with three crowds of over 500, while we also became the first FA WSL 2 club to live stream a game on Facebook when we took on London Bees. General Manager Lee Sanders was obviously delighted upon hearing the club had won and had the following to say: “The news came as a bit of a shock as we had absolutely no idea we were receiving the award - a nice shock though! This is the culmination of years of hard work from many people on and off the pitch, from parents and players in the beginning as a grassroots club to the unwavering support from key partners since we
“The volunteers who we’ve had to make the game days work and the match day experiences pleasant also deserve a huge amount of credit. “For me though, the award should be going to Dawn (Hepple, Club Secretary) and Mark (Donnelly, Marketing Officer) who, in Dawn’s case, has been with the club since day one. The finance, welfare of the players and match days have been and continue to be why we are a well ran club and business. She puts in endless hours and IS this club. Mark, who has joined us in more recent years, isn’t just a marketing officer, he’s innovative, hard-working and passionate about our club and the past few seasons wouldn’t have been as successful without him.” The FA WSL Club of the Year Award will be presented to the club ahead of today’s game.

Q: Who is your favourite superhero and why?
A: Well it used to be Spiderman because he was a proper superhero given that he got a bitten by a spider and then got his powers. But now it’s Batman because he’s quite a cool guy and I think he’d beat Spiderman in a fight.
58
Q: If you could buy any type of food, what would it be and why?
A: Steak, because it’s my favourite and it’s really nice. I like it Medium Rare!
26
Q: If you could get yourself anything, what would it be?
A: A house on an island near a nice beach. Oh, and a cafe. For income.
Q: If you could be any nationality, what would it be and why?
A: Fijian. I googled the top ten island to emigrate to and Fiji was number one. So if I was already Fijian it would be a lot easier to go and I wouldn’t need a Visa or a passport!
97
Q: If you could teleport anywhere, where would it be and why?
A: Disney World! Because it’s the funnest place on earth. And I would take my Dad.
73
Q: What’s the longest journey you’ve ever spent in a car or bus?
A: Yeovil away is a long one but I went on Uni tour to Salou and we were on the bus for a long time - more hours than I’d care to be on a bus for. Maybe like 30 hours, that was long!
99
Q: What was your favourite TV show growing up?
A: Probably Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I also liked Saved by the Bell and watching Coronation Street with my parents!
48
Q: If you could talk to the Prime Minister, what would you talk about?
A:First of all, I’d ask her if she thinks I should wear my hair in a ponytail or plaits this season and what she thinks is best. I’d ask if she used every room in 10 Downing Street or if she just had a favourite one or two. And finally I’d ask who she thinks would win in a fight Godzilla or King Kong.
64
Q: If you were running for Prime Minister, what would your campaign slogan be?
A: A laugh a day will keep the World Wars away!

From the back of the stand!
JOHN MIDDLETON
Greetings and welcome back from the back of the stand! Well, that should read the back of the stand of the Club of The Year! A fantastic achievement and, from what I’ve been privileged to witness over the last four years, well deserved. I, like many of you, have seen the club grow not just in terms of crowd-size and as a team but as a family – a place you’d be happy for your children to come along to, and they do. It is perhaps fitting that the award is received when we are visited by a team starting their WSL2 journey as we did a few seasons ago. The name “Tottenham Hotspur” will, of course, be familiar but the players not as yet. They had a great season last year and will relish the new challenge ahead. An exciting fixture to begin
