We reminisce and celebrate one of our Kingdom’s true icons as we delve into the book commemorating the life and triumphs of Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa, an unforgettable figure in Bahrain’s sports sector. The book documents nearly every aspect of his journey, including many of the stories and memories that he created, which left a positive and long-lasting mark on many generations of Bahrainis. The book also contains trivia and rare information outside of his sports interests, such as the creative process behind his poetry and song recordings, and his approach towards media. A fitting tribute to one of the Kingdom’s most beloved and sorely missed personalities. We shed the spotlight on one of the Kingdom’s most talked about new attractions, Mall of Dilmunia. Chief Executive Officer, Shaikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa reveals the distinctively unique offerings that have led some to dub the mall as ‘The Future of Entertainment’. TELL US ABOUT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MALL. HOW MANY ARE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED IN THE VARIOUS OUTLETS AND ATTRACTIONS?

WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES STANDING IN THE WAY OF MALL OF DILMUNIA BECOMING A REALITY? AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

The project is in accordance with the 2030 Development Plan, set to contribute greatly towards strategically increasing tourism and investment into the country. It has created an opportunity for approximately 3,000 jobs in Bahrain. 1,500 of these jobs will be through retailers, while 1,600 will be mall-related management, and 85 of those will be in the entertainment aspects of the mall. We hope to be able to provide opportunities to several Bahrainis, as well as the national economy.

All big projects face challenges. We used ours as motivation to get the project to the finish line. They were a reminder that life does not always go as planned but we can overcome them. It started at the design stage, then it was dealing with the different contractors because of the nature of the project and the many special components, and then the delivery of the fish to the Bahrain Aquarium. This is to just mention a few. But I must say, it was a great journey. On our road to success, we are proud of the selection of brands that have joined. Mall of Dilmunia’s vision is to provide an entirely different dimension to shopping and entertainment that caters to every member of the family. We look forward to continuing to achieve that.

HOW IS THE MALL SUPPORTING LOCAL TALENTS AND INITIATIVES? Since we opened, we have hosted two key events to celebrate and empower our local artists, the MODernart and a 2-day live painting show as a gesture of appreciation to Team Bahrain’s support of the Kingdom during a challenging year. We want to provide them with a platform where they can display their talents and their art. That is why we have partnered up with the well reputed Bahraini artist, Abbas AlMosawi, and his team from Colors of the East. This is just the starting point. In the future, you will be witnessing other kinds of collaborations beyond the arts.

Remembering Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa

Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa is an unforgettable figure in Bahrain’s sports sector. His life’s journey has been documented in this book, which celebrates his achievements and contributions. It contains many of the stories and memories that he created during his time with us, which left a positive and long-lasting mark on many generations of Bahrainis.


The book opens with an introduction by HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who reminisces about the times he met with Shaikh Isa and the invaluable lessons he learned from him. He praised the hand he had in paving the way for the athletic youth, who will go on to achieve great things and remember him in each feat. Offering a panoramic and detailed view of his life and character, the book highlights his role in shaping aspects of the Kingdom’s sports identity. It delves deeply into each chapter, starting with his first name ‘Isa’, after the name of Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, who ruled Bahrain for 69 years, the longest to date. Large sections are dedicated to his long and fulfilling journey as one of Bahrain’s sports

pioneers, and his involvement in its basketball and football scenes. The book is also abundant in trivia and rare information outside of his sports interests, such as the creative process behind his poetry and song recordings, and his approach towards media during his time in the Ministry of Information. His story is covered in 9 chapters that detail his childhood, time spent in Egypt, return to Bahrain, his poetry and stint in the military, love of sports, passion for media, songs and poetry, final days, and lasting impact. As a bonus, the book also has a QR code which readers can scan using their smartphones to listen to the poems and songs he recorded in his voice.

The book perfectly illustrates the milestones of a man whose dreams knew no limit. They became a reality through perseverance, planning, and determination. It’s this attitude towards success that made him a beloved personality in sports. He helped carry that torch for decades, helping his team and nation to reach their full potential and make their mark in local and regional competitions. Despite his involvement gradually decreasing in his later years, Bahrain’s social media scene was full of tributes when they had learned of his passing. Many shared their favorite moments and fondest memories of him, particularly the ones where his passion for sports shined the brightest. He will be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and love for his country. The amount of research and new information packed into these pages make it clear that this book was a labor of love and admiration, a testament to the far-reaching impact of one of the Kingdom’s most beloved and sorely missed personalities.

Once home to New York’s financial institutions, Downtown Manhattan has undergone a dramatic transformation into a burgeoning cultural destination. Downtown New York is now recognised for its skyline, top-tier educational institutions, world-class shopping and dining, and its abundance of outdoor greenspaces with 84 acres of parks and open spaces. Facilitated by the repurposing of office buildings and skyscrapers along Wall Street and Broadway into residential towers, the area is now home to more than 62,000 people. Notable amongst these is One Wall Street, the former Irving Trust Building located to the east of Broadway and adjacent to the New York Stock Exchange, currently undergoing the largest office to residential conversion in New York City’s history, set for completion in 2022. Offering unobstructed views of New York Harbour and the Statue of

Liberty, the 56-storey building will comprise 566 homes ranging from studios to four-bedroom condominiums, with a prized penthouse all set within a 20th century Landmark Art Deco building designed by New York Times’ “Architect of the Century,” Ralph Walker. Proof that demand shows no sign of abating in downtown New York, 2018 saw the reopening of the WTC-Cortlandt 1 Train station, which had been closed for almost two decades, and now opens directly into the west side of the Oculus. The city’s hugely popular ferry system is also expanding to increase connections to downtown’s Pier 11, due to be completed by 2021. Developers are not alone in identifying an opportunity in the area-many renowned chefs and restaurateurs including David Chang, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Lidia Bastianich and Austin Johnson are realising their most exciting projects to date in downtown New York. Similarly, entertainment institutions, such as the Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center and the new concert venue atop Pier 17, which opened in 2018 in downtown’s Seaport District, are helping put downtown on the map as a 24-hour destination. With a total of 1,300 new residential units brought to market in 2018, demand shows no sign of slowing in downtown as residential growth continues. Whole Foods Market will occupy the lower-level retail portion of the building with 44,000 square feet over three floors and public entrances on Broadway, New Street and Exchange Place. Since 2005, $6.4 billion has been invested in the area’s transportation infrastructure, which has facilitated the addition of 12 new subway lines, 30 bus routes, 20 ferry routes, 28 Bikeshare stations, and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava’s $4 billion

FES518, also known as The Moroccan Gallery, is a hidden treasure at the Jawad Dome in Bahrain. The project, which is an exquisite showcase of traditional Moroccan art forms, serves as a multi-functional space, including art gallery, yoga studio, wedding venue, and events space. The interior and exterior walls took many years to complete due to the ornate handcrafted detailing that covers every inch and was done on site here in Bahrain, This includes clay carving, woodwork, and hand painted ceiling designs on the Zilij, or mosaic tile work, all done painstakingly by artisans and craftsmen from Fes, the old capital city of Morocco where these arts and crafts are still alive as important heritage practices. Durrah explores the creative process and passions of dynamic abstract artist Pierre Bellemare. WHERE WERE YOUR BEGINNINGS TO ART AS A PROFESSION? AND WHEN DID YOU CHOOSE ABSTRACT ART AS YOUR FAVORITE TECHNIQUE?

Art has always resonated with me. Maybe that’s because my grandmother used to paint, and it fascinated me. During my first career as a computer graphic designer, I worked for various Crown corporations, including the National Assembly of Québec. Then, I founded my own graphic design company, and I continued to paint in parallel. Throughout that career, I worked with colour, balance and visual aspects to transmit a message, to communicate. But I always knew that someday, I wanted to make painting my fulltime career. As an artist, I explored hyperrealism through contemporary landscapes. My work was featured in galleries in Canada and the United States. Everything was going well, people liked my art. But something was missing. Looking back, I think it was the challenge, the risk-taking that was missing. When I create, I need to take risks to get in touch with my vital energy, to liberate myself from the form and constraints that were intimately tied to my career as a graphic designer. I needed to find my own path, my own personal style, my true essence. So I took a few months off, I took all my paintings off the market and I set up a new studio: a new, immaculate white studio. Before picking up my brush, I waited for the inspiration to manifest and fill the space. I didn’t know what this time off would produce. The first painting I created was for my own pleasure. I threw myself into it without any constraints, and there, with music playingwhich is so important to my art-and all my years of experience, my art came pouring out, covering the white canvas with my own vigorous and robust style. It manifested as touches of calligraphy, rhythms, colours, an amalgam of strength and harmony. At that moment, I felt I had finally found a path that was my very own. That’s how my abstract art came into being. I finally felt totally satisfied, as if I’d given everything without holding back. That

was more than 10 years ago, and now I have no limits-my creative process is completely free.

YOUR PAINTINGS ARE SO DYNAMIC AND VIBRANT! DO THEY REFLECT HOW YOU ARE AS A PERSON? Thank you for that description. Yes, I believe you could say I’m an energetic person. I express myself through action. I’m very creative in a number of aspects of my life, but the act of painting catalyzes 100% of my creative energy. I would describe my art as a combination of this energy, music and my travels. I’ve always enjoyed pushing limits, discovering what’s hiding on the other side of the mountain or at the end of the path. Even as a young boy, I enjoyed exploring and discovering. And when I began travelling, it was like a revelation! The countries, the vibrations of the big cities I visited (London, Paris, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Rome, Tokyo, Beijing, New Delhi, Istanbul, etc.), the cultures and the colours were like food for my soul. I feel incredibly good when I’m travelling; all my senses are awakened to the colours, smells, tastes and languages that I don’t understand but are music to my ears. Travelling has a huge impact on my art: I lose my points of reference, and I love that! In fact, collaborating at the international level is what sparked a demand for large-format art. When I work on large pieces I get to use my whole body. Moving like that while painting is a very powerful experience; it takes me beyond the limits of space. Music is omnipresent when I create. In fact, it is key to my work, because the rhythm drives my movement, gives it strength and guides my decisions, which happen very quickly during the creative process. Music allows me to harness the power of my movements and gestures, and I believe this is what defines my art. When I paint, I see colours in the music. And the abstract calligraphy lends structure and meaning to the painting. It’s a very positive and intense energy, where each gesture is full of life, each brushstroke, each splash of colour is a risk-a risk that I not only enjoy, but need to

complete my creations and feel entirely satisfied. Sometimes painting feels like a sport: it’s rhythmical, intense and fast. As I paint, the motion, the movement and the physical effort that each painting demands is a complete workout: body and spirit.

WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU WANT YOUR ART TO CONVEY? AND ARE THEY DRAWN TO ATTRACT A SPECIFIC AUDIENCE? My message is closely tied to emotions. I want people to feel the love, the expertise and the authenticity that I put into each work. Beyond the joy of painting, the whole beauty of abstract art for me is the fact that it is boundless. Each person, regardless of their culture or background, can see themselves in it and experience their own emotions. When I chose abstract art as my mode of expression, I expected to have a smaller, more targeted clientele. To my great surprise, that isn’t the case. People who had never been interested in abstract art, people of all ages and from all walks of life, experience very positive emotions in the presence of my work. I find that immensely satisfying. For me, it’s a sign that my art has meaning, it has its place, and I believe that’s because I give the best of myself. I think people pick up on that.

WHAT STATE OF MIND ARE YOU IN WHEN YOU PRODUCE YOUR ART? When I paint, I am of course completely immersed in the creative process. I’m actually in the painting. To begin, I look at the blank canvas and prepare mentally, visualizing the outline, the direction and the dominant colours. Then, I let my inspiration lead the way. I always work in a positive mind frame, and my paintings are filled with this positive charge. It’s the foundation of my art; I love that the audience feels that vibrant, sincere energy. Designing a work of art involves many equations, and each one requires a solution, because at the end of the process, the structure of the work has to be pleasing to the eye and the spirit. The graphic designer in me is always on the lookout for balance and beauty. It’s a broad mix of knowledge, experience, surrender and control, all at once. I constantly strive to strike a balance between these elements, and it all happens very quickly in my mind. There’s no room for hesitation; I make decisions moment by moment. Each and every brushstroke plays a role in creating harmony; each colour is necessary, and a single gesture can throw the work off balance. I rely on the sum of my experiences to know when my work is successful, when it is completed. As I paint, I feel as if I’m walking a tightrope, and the risk I take with each brushstroke is vital-it’s a driving force.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR PREPARING FOR A SOLO EXHIBITION? It’s both exciting and energizing! I always want to give the best of myself. I let myself soak up the context of the exhibition as well as what is fuelling my art at the time. I find a guiding theme, whether it’s based on music, places or my travels. I do a lot of research so that I become totally imbued with the theme. Then, the act of creating begins. For example, when I gave a solo exhibition at the Grand Théâtre in Quebec City, where the Quebec Symphony Orchestra performs, my paintings were inspired by classical music. I called my exhibition “Rhythme Symphonique.” While we were setting up, the internationally renowned British-born pianist and composer Stephen Hough was rehearsing. It was sublime! All my works, with the music and this great pianist… what a wonderful coincidence! I ended up giving him a small painting in exchange for that moment of happiness, and since then, we’ve kept in touch.

WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL AUDIENCE LIKE? WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO BUY YOUR PAINTINGS? My clientele is extremely varied. Some private collectors own a number of my creations. But I also have clients who are purchasing abstract art for the first time, and that always touches me. My artwork is part of both private and corporate collections. Many of my clients in the business community are interested in acquiring works that reflect the vibrancy and strength of their own companies. One

thing is for sure: all of my clients are energetic and bold people! They’re not afraid of colour, and they want it to be part of their lives.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM YOUR COLLABORATION WITH THE DEJI ART MUSEUM OF NANJING IN CHINA? First, I’m really delighted by this superb collaboration and the fact that the Deji Art Museum has chosen to add my work to its permanent collection. For my solo exhibition, the Museum acquired 22 of my large-format paintings and commissioned some 20 more, which I’m currently working on. As I discovered the Deji Art Museum, I also discovered the city of Nanjing and the surrounding region. I wasn’t familiar with the area, but it has become a wonderful source of inspiration. The city combines the old with the new; it’s absolutely inspirational! The trees in bloom, the large parks, the vibrant business centre and the people-it’s all energy and colour for me. I researched specific locations, in particular to help me create my own personal vision before transposing it into abstract art. I also created an extra large-format painting inspired by Nanjing’s Purple Mountain, and it will definitely be the centrepiece of the exhibition.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT PROJECTS. WHICH WAS THE MOST REWARDING FOR YOU AND WHY? Since I began painting professionally, I’ve been donating pieces every year to charitable

organizations. The well-being of children is particularly important to me. I support a social pediatrics organization that helps provide children who are less well off with better conditions so that they can grow up healthy and eventually find their place in society. Another cause I’ve been supporting for a number of years is The Lighthouse, a wonderful organization that provides seriously ill children and their parents with care and resources. My happiness increases exponentially when I see my art contributing to such incredibly important and fundamental causes. Each time one of my paintings sells at a charity auction, I am contributing by helping people in need.

HAS THE MIDDLE EAST EVER ATTRACTED YOU AS A MARKET? DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR THIS PART OF THE WORLD? The Middle East is a region that has always appealed to me, because of its history and cultural wealth. Here in Canada, our country is vast, magnificent, but also very young. But in the Middle East, the culture, the people, the colours, the tastes and the architecture really speak to my artistic sensitivity. It was a difficult path, but we have successfully surpassed those challenges and hurdles, and have ended 2020 with an operational profit. Choreography of Matter 01

Dorit Levinstein’s art is a dance of color and form. If you were to ask about her dynamic process of creating art, she would give a straightforward answer. It takes passion. It is clear from viewing Levinstein’s eclectic, multicoloured collection of sculptures that the work she does is inspired by love, not only for art but for the artistic journey. Dorit Levinstein is an artist who works primarily as a sculptor, despite beginning her career as a painter. Throughout the different stages of her development as a sculptor, she continued raising questions connected to painting. In fact, she has never stopped being a painter; each of her pieces is painted entirely by hand. Levinstein’s style gradually evolved in stages from the moment she began connecting painting and sculpture. When there initially arose a conflict between the two mediums, Levinstein saw no reason to choose between them. Focusing her energy on only one thing proved unproductive. With her willingness to adapt and experiment, it is her objective that her work will continue to change, avoiding stagnancy in a safe place. Today, she is best known for her colourful linear figures. Using a kaleidoscope of colors and striking patterns, every piece tells a story. Dorit Levinstein uses various metals such as bronze and aluminum in constructing her sculptures. They are composed of undulating, fluid lines that form the abstract shapes of flowers and animals, as well as iconic figures from Marilyn

Monroe to The Beatles. Her inspiration stems from the beauty found in nature as well as classical artwork. By meditating on the likeness and form of her inspirations, Levinstein manages to create an alternative point of view when it comes to her subjects’ function and meaning. Using a fluid process that Levinstein herself calls, “a choreography of matter,” she creates intuitively, without preliminary sketches. Her process begins by mentally drawing three-dimensional figures in space, envisioning the form. A wire sculpture then follows, becoming the first stage of the physical sculpting process. When the basic shape is ready, volume and thickness are added to the figure, and revisions are made. After the physical sculpture is created, the piece is cast in bronze before it is ready for its final metamorphosis. The sculptures are brought to life by their bright colours and striking hand-painted patterns. At this point, the sculpture embodies several ideas at once. It is a fluent articulation of a subject that is understood symbolically and visually but still contains tremendous depth, complexity, and versatility. While her work is not categorised as feminine,

many subjects Levinstein chooses to focus on are often connected to feminine subjects, such as motherhood. Throughout the creative process, various facts and cliches are examined that may be connected with the subject, in an effort to focus on the heart of the message, and what is most important to convey. Most of Dorit’s best-known pieces express a feeling or an idea that cannot be communicated with words. From her palette, Levinstein creates a magically curious world where it is possible to find surprises within the ordinary. Much like arriving in a new place or a new country for the first time, experiencing Dorit Levinstein’s art is akin to transporting oneself to another world. Instead of duplicating images, Dorit explores a new facet of the subject. By allowing her pieces to metaphorically dance on their own, she captures the essence of her subjects with a subtle, seemingly effortless touch. In particular, pieces like Renoir Dancers and La Cumparsita derive their volume from a continuous virtuosic line. Often used in Levinstein’s sculptures, this unbreaking line is what seamlessly forms the abstract interpretation of the subject.

This year we look at our new timepieces under the angle of the “Twist” as all our novelties are inspired from our Maison’s very own “Classic with a Twist”. Vacheron Constantin revealed several beautiful timepieces at Watches and Wonders from our regular lines such as Overseas and Égérie to our more exclusive offers from Les Cabinotiers and the Métiers d’Art that it is difficult to choose. However, I would like to highlight the Traditionnelle Split-seconds ultra-thin chronograph Collection Excellence Platine. The watch is powered by the caliber 3500, one of the thinnest for this type of

complication (5,2mm). Fully made of 950 platinum (case, dial, bezel crown, folding clasp till the strap stitching), this watch is limited to 15 pieces and is undoubtedly a stunning piece unveiled this year, whatever it is about the aesthetics (pure elegance) or craftsmanship and savoir-faire. Then, we have enriched our Overseas collection with two new expressions of our ultra-thin perpetual calendar in white gold for the first time. One features our signature blue dial and the other is a skeletonized version, its movement being open-worked and finely hand-finished of course. A pure delight for the eyes.

TELL US ABOUT EGERIE, YOUR NEW LINE FOR WOMEN. WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL? WHAT KIND OF WOMAN IS IT AIMED AT? Égérie is our collection dedicated to women, launched last year in 2020. Even though our Maison already addresses to ladies through Patrimony, Traditionnelle, Malte and Overseas collections, we aimed at answering a growing demand for a pure, versatile and dedicated feminine style. Our response to this was the Égérie collection. Inspired from the Haute-Couture, the collection immediately encountered a great success. The offset indications on the dials and the integrated circles are design signatures coming from the Maison’s creations from the 19th century. The crown, located at 1:30 o-clock, is reminiscent from the famous American 1921 timepiece dated 1921. We have reinterpreted these signatures by imagining an off-centre display playing with a diagonal line starting at 1:30 o’clock with the crown, continuing on the dial with interlaced circles and ending with the Vacheron Constantin logo. The Égérie collection is powered with the calibre 1088, a self-winding Manufacture-made movement with a 40-hour power reserve. The sapphire crystal on the caseback affords an admirable view of the Haute Horlogerie finishes: a hand-crafted Côtes de Genève motif and an opened 22K gold oscillating weight inspired by the shape of the Maltese cross. The new watches come with different bracelets – leather and satin straps. Thanks to a clever system of interchangeable straps, ladies can easily adapt the bracelet to their look for a versatile elegance by day and night.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN’S TOURBILLON MOVEMENT INVOLVES REMARKABLE ENGINEERING. WHAT SHOULD COLLECTORS KNOW ABOUT IT? The tourbillon is one of the most popular complications within the watchmaking community probably due to the spectacular nature of this complication! Historically developed for pocket watches to get a better accuracy, it became later an “observatory contests beast” for the same reason… and the fascination for its visible and impressive mechanism became later the most attractive aspect of the tourbillon. Due to the complexity of the tourbillon assembling, balancing and time setting, our tourbillons are manufactured within a dedicated workshop in our manufacture. Watchmakers in charge of our tourbillons are all experimented specialists who had previously worked on simpler movements – an average of 10 years of watchmaking experience is necessary before joining the team of tourbillons specialists in our

We began our journey to making our facilities carbon neutral in 2005 and achieved this target in 2015. The aim is for our product lineup to also achieve carbon neutrality in 2025. 2020 WAS A CHALLENGING YEAR FOR MANY IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY. HOW DID LAMBORGHINI PERFORM IN THE MIDDLE EAST MARKET? On the back of our most successful year in terms of volumes in 2019, 2020 built on this solid foundation as our most profitable year in history in terms of operating margin. In fact, September 2020 was globally our best ever. In fact, this is not too different from how we conducted business before the pandemic, but of course, we ensure that we are following all local government regulations.

WHAT HAVE BEEN LAMBORGHINI’S CONSISTENT BEST PERFORMING MODELS IN RECENT YEARS? We have seen a strong performance across

all our three platforms in recent years – our V8 product, the Lamborghini Urus, our V10 offering in the Huracan EVO, and of course our iconic V12, the Lamborghini Aventador. Before starting work on any piece, Iranian artist Babak Rashvand runs his fingers along the canvas, making a connection with his backdrop. His work features a unique visual attitude towards letters, distorting them to communicate a universal language that has become his own signature style. YOUR EARLY TRAINING WAS WITH YOUR FATHER. WHAT WAS HIS ARTISTIC BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE? My father is a painter, a calligrapher, an author, a researcher, and an art professor. Therefore, I grew up in an artistic atmosphere. Besides, my father is a well-known calligraphy professor who has had solo and group exhibitions both in Iran and abroad. He is the author of a calligraphy book for the school of arts in Iran, which is also the source for the university entrance examination.

YOUR PAINTINGS ARE ABSTRACT COLLECTIONS OF LETTERS RATHER THAN WORDS OR PHRASES. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS APPROACH AND WHAT APPEALS TO YOU ABOUT IT? In the beginning, I mainly focused on painting and illustrations. At the same time, I was learning classical Iranian calligraphy. Since I studied graphics at university, I was always inclined to the visual characteristics of calligraphy rather than reading comprehension and writing legibility features of the letters. I was never

interested in legibility, instead, I looked for ways to illustrate calligraphy in painting manners.

ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY IS AN IMPORTANT ISLAMIC ARTISTIC TRADITION. WHERE DOES YOUR ART SIT IN RELATION TO THIS TRADITION? Traditional Iranian and Arabic calligraphies have always been important holy symbols in Eastern and Middle East art. The reason is that they were and still are used in writing holy books and exemplified in the architecture of Holy places. This special place, along with the painting limitations in Islamic history, lead to the empowerment of the place of calligraphy in Islamic art. I only get inspired by the elements and forms of calligraphy models to come up with my new forms.

ARE THERE OTHER ARTISTS WHO INFLUENCE YOUR STYLE? I tried to be independent in calligraphy, however, in painting, I adore the works of Vincent van Gogh, Gerhard Richter, and Bernard Buffet.

Girard-Perregaux and Aston Martin demonsrate demonstrate a passion for refined craftsmanship and have been working together, sharing their understanding of design, materials and technology. The first model borne of the partnsership celebrates the iconic Three Bridges pocket watch from the 19th century in a decidedly contemporary way, down to the smallest details, including the strap. The latter is a world premiere, presented in black calf leather and featuring Girard-Perregaux Rubber Alloy, an innovative rubber insert injected with white gold. The design of the strap is intended to evoke thoughts of Aston Martin racing cars of the past. Upholding Girard-Perregaux tradition, this model skillfully plays with proportions and shapes much to the delight of aesthetes. The 44 millimeter case of the Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges - Aston Martin Edition is formed of Grade 5 titanium, a strong, hypoallergenic alloy selected by Aston Martin for its lightweight properties. It is suffused with black DLC, bestowing the watch with a stealthy appearance. Interestingly, titanium ore was discovered in Great

Britain, the home of Aston Martin, back in 1791 by an English clergyman, William Gregor, in the same year Girard-Perregaux was founded. A sapphire crystal ‘box’ is positioned front of house, as well as to the rear, coaxing light to illuminate the case interior, thereby augmenting readability. The movement eschews a mainplate, sitting between both panes of sapphire crystal and seemingly floating in mid-air. Three bridges, an iconic signature of Girard-Perregaux, span the dial and are formed of titanium with black PVD treatment and polished angles. The design endows the timepiece with an airy appearance, affording breathtaking views of movement components ordinarily hidden from view. While Girard-Perregaux has a long history of making the invisible visible, in this instance it has ventured off-piste, creating a watch whose movement appears to levitate within the case. This is achieved by paring back the movement, causing the mainplate to seemingly disappear within the case, thereby creating the illusion of the movement flying within the case. It was this particular characteristic that led to the term ‘Flying Bridges’.

The cage of the tourbillon, positioned in the lower portion of the dial, is ‘lyre-shaped’, a characteristic found on all the company’s tourbillons dating back to the 19th century. A blued hand affixed to the cage imparts the running seconds. The tourbillon cage, measuring a mere 10mm in diameter, is composed of 79 components which collectively weigh only 0.25 grams. This remarkably low figure helps mitigate energy consumption. The barrel, positioned at 12 o’clock, is openworked, affording partial views of the mainspring. A white gold micro-rotor, positioned beneath the barrel, energizes the mainspring and, unlike most automatic watches, it grants unobstructed views of the movement. The car company’s name is engraved on the vertical flank of the micro-rotor and is filled with white luminescent treatment which appears blue in restricted light. In the center of the store are two monolithic consoles. The first, designed in transparent glass and frosted plexiglass, stands as a luminous

totem. It will be dedicated to the latest product releases. The second one, made of black marble, will highlight the most sophisticated and exclusive models of the collection. The second space is a warm and intimate customer dedicated area to look closer into the timepieces and its details while sitting on the sofa in the shape of a plane’s fuselage. The warmth brought by the light oak on the wall and the softness of the luxurious white carpet complete this cosy atmosphere. The whole area contrasts perfectly with the coldness of the black matte marble columns and shelves – where props and collector items retrace the history of the company – and the hardness of the concrete. On the oak wall, just like in airport lounges, three iconic black clocks indicate three different time zones corresponding to three countries dear to Bell & Ross: Geneva, the capital of watchmaking; New York City, the capital of the world and Tokyo, the capital of Japan. CARTIER BOUTIQUE RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA Cartier transformed its Al Faisaliyah flagship boutique into a magical garden for its High Jewellery exhibition, showcasing more than 150 jewellery creations, including 30 historic Cartier pieces exhibited for the first time in the Middle East, presented in a magical scenography featuring a flower garden. The collection symbolises Cartier’s emblematic Panthère continuing her journey across Saudi Arabia, as the Maison continues to expand its independent operations in the Kingdom. Whilst the iconic Panthère begins her journey in Place Vendome in Paris, last year she travelled to the stunning surrounds of Al Ula for ‘A New Dawn’, a film dedicated to the holy month of Ramadan. This month, she reaches a new destination in the Kingdom, as one of Cartier’s first-ever panther motif pieces, a Panthère pendant-watch (1920), went on display in the heart of Riyadh. Going back to his origins, he had a unique and personal dream of contemporary “Andalusi” cuisine – a reimagination of the culinary legacy of Al-Andalus. PIAZZA DUOMO ALBA, ITALY Situated just a few kilometers from Alba, at the foot of the Ceretto winery, the vegetable garden of the Piazza Duomo Restaurant expresses the passion for the vegetable world of the three-star chef Enrico Crippa who, on the Monsordo Bernardina Estate, cultivates and uses raw material for the menus of his restaurant in the historic center of the Piedmontese town. In addition to the most common vegetables (always, however, selected among ancient and particular varieties), approx. 400 botanical and horticultural plant species are cultivated, following a constant research on edible plants and seeds coming from circuits as local as possible and, in any case, certified. The greenhouse ensures fresh produce throughout the winter months: from the Asian greens, true passion of the chef, to the most diverse shoots and aromatic herbs, as well as edible flowers, that is to say a good part of the ingredients constituting the signature dish 21-31-41. Of particular interest is the collection of halophytes: Crambe, Atriplex, Salicornia, Carpobrotus, Mertensia, plants that give dishes a marine note, without necessarily having to use fish and crustaceans. Most of the products grown are consumed in the sprouting stage or in a not much later stage, so that taste and consistency are at the apex of freshness, enclosed in a perfectly miniaturized plant form. Celebration OF SUCCESS The first Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is a curation of exceptional thoughts, concepts and items, which culminate to form the clients’ perfect experience. Their proposition was purposefully self-indulgent. Their desire was to create a response to a life of hard work, success achieved, and celebration required. Their Rolls-Royce Boat Tail should be joyful, a celebratory car to enjoy with their family.

Together, with the marque’s designers, they embarked on an intellectual journey, founded on a long-standing and creative relationship with the brand. Indeed, the clients’ fascination of the Boat Tail form was furthered by a motor car in their private collection; a 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, lovingly restored, by them, in time for their modern Boat Tail’s completion. Rolls-Royce Boat Tail presents a wonderful new aesthetic for the marque, balancing previously unseen levels of sculpture with discrete, sometimes playful functionality. The creation tells the romantic tale of Rolls-Royce’s history, echoing a Boat Tail design but not explicitly mimicking it, fusing an historical body type with a thoroughly contemporary design. At nearly 5.8m long, its generosity of proportion and clarity of surface present a graceful and relaxed stance. The front profile is centered on a new treatment of Rolls-Royce’s iconic pantheon grille and lights. The grille becomes an integral part of the front end, not an applique; a freedom of design bestowed only upon models within the Coachbuild portfolio. This progressive treatment softens Rolls-Royce’s familiar formality while retaining the marque’s undeniable presence. A strong horizontal graphic with deep-set daytime running lights forms

Boat Tail’s intense brow line and frames classical round headlamps, a design feature recalled from the design archives of Rolls-Royce. In profile, nautical references are very suggestive. The wrap-around windscreen recalls the visor on motor launches, while the gentle rearward lean of the A-pillar, the large, crisp volumes at the front and the tapered rear create a gesture that recalls a motor launch rising out of water under power. A progressive negative sculpture in the lower bodyside creates a lithe impression, while making an historical reference to the running boards of prominent heritage Rolls-Royce designs. Viewed from dead rear, the body resolves in a gentle sharpening of the form. As with the front, a horizontal emphasis is established at the rear with wide, deep-set lamps – a break from the expected vertical Rolls-Royce lamp iconography. Indeed, it is at the rear where the nautical references become more apparent. The aft deck, a modern interpretation of the wooden rear decks of historical Boat Tails, incorporates large swathes of wood. Caleidolegno veneer is applied in a feat of Rolls-Royce engineering; the grey and black material which is typically housed in the interior, has been specially adapted to be used on the exterior, with no compromise to the aesthetic.

An explicit architectural influence is discovered in Boat Tail’s unconventional fixed-canopy roof. Adding to the sculptural form, the sweeping roofline concludes in delicate structural elements that touch down on the rear, redolent of flying buttresses. Of course, if inclement weather is encountered while the roof is removed, a temporary tonneau is stowed for static transitory shelter. The exterior of Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is swathed in a rich and complex tone of the client’s favorite color – blue. The hue, with an overt nautical connotation, is subtle when in shadows but in sunlight, embedded metallic and crystal flakes bring a vibrant and energetic aura to the finish. To ensure the smoothest possible application when rendering the exterior, a finger was run over the definitive body line before the paint had fully dried to soften its edges. The wheels are finished in bright blue, highly polished and clear coated to add to Boat Tail’s celebratory character. A hand-painted, gradated bonnet, a first for Rolls-Royce, rises from a comparatively subdued deeper blue which cascades onto the grille, providing a progressive but informal aesthetic and a solidity of overall volume when viewed from the front. The interior leather reflects the bonnet’s color tone transition with the front seats swathed in the darker blue hue, recognizing Boat Tail’s driver focused intent, while the rear seats are finished in the lighter tone. A soft metallic sheen is applied to the leather to accentuate its pairing with the painted exterior while detailed stitching and piping is applied in a more intense blue inspired by the hands of the car’s timepieces. A brilliant blue is also found woven at a 55-degree angle into the technical fiber elements to be seen on the lower bodywork, precisely orientated to emulate the spill of a water’s wake.

The Sky’s the Limit Bahrain International Airport is the only international airport in Bahrain, making it the Kingdom’s gateway to the rest of the world. It is a vital economic and social asset for Bahrain that will further drive tourism to the Kingdom and enrich its aviation history. The transfer of operations to the new Passenger Terminal was seamlessly completed on January 28, 2021, marking the start of a new chapter in the Kingdom’s rich aviation history. Positioning BIA as the most modern boutique airport in the region, the transfer was in line with the directive of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, whose support and contributions helped to ensure the success of the $1.1 billion Airport Modernization Program (AMP), one of the most important national development projects in the Kingdom’s history. Spanning 210,000 sqm, the new terminal is four times larger than the legacy airport and increases BIA’s capacity to 14 million passengers a year. It is the largest green building in Bahrain and is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified. A globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement, LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. The terminal is equipped with state-ofthe-art technology to enhance efficiency, improve security, and meet passengers’ growing expectations for a more seamless airport experience. Meanwhile, advancements in automation streamline some of the most timeconsuming processes and procedures, giving passengers more control over their journeys.

Highlights of the new terminal include 8 baggage reclaim belts, 104 check-in counters, 2 halls for registration of first and business class passengers, 36 passport control offices, 12 e-gates for Departures, 8 e-gates for Arrivals, 8,520 sqm of Registration Halls, a 4,780 sqm Departures Hall, a 6,600 sqm Arrivals Hall, 10,002 sqm of retail space, and 3,300 sqm of Duty-Free space for Departures, and 541 sqm for Arrivals. The DutyFree Area at the new terminal is three times larger than the legacy airport, offering 30 leading brands in Bahrain for the first time. The terminal features the Bahrain Airport Hotel, which will offer transit passengers a variety of accommodation types and facilities. Meanwhile, a dedicated team of healthcare professionals is on hand around the clock to provide the best possible medical services at the Airport Clinic. To ensure travelers experience Bahrain’s renowned hospitality, the terminal has two lounges, one for Gulf Air business-class passengers, and “The Pearl”, which is operated by Hala Bahrain and serves first and business-class passengers of other airlines. Featuring a broad selection of local products, food and beverage outlets, Bahraini jewelry, an art gallery, and a theatre, the airport’s Souq Al Qaisarya will treat all customers, even transit passengers, to a taste of Bahraini hospitality.
