WHAT SPARKED YOUR INITIAL INTEREST IN CALLIGRAPHY, AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY IN THIS ART FORM?

I grew up in an artistic family and a highly cultural atmosphere. I started at the age of 4 or 5, imitating my brothers doing calligraphy. I grabbed my first pen and began copying them without knowing what the letters meant. It was a visual interest. I was fascinated with the shapes of letters and the movement.

COULD YOU DESCRIBE THE INFLUENCE OF SYRIAN CULTURE AND HERITAGE ON YOUR WORK?

I’d say Arabic culture more than Syrian. My main inspiration is based on literature in general, but poetry in specific. There were several periods of my inspiration: classic Arabic poetry, such as Al-Mutanabbi, and more from the Abbasid and Umayyad periods. Then some modern poets like Al-Sayyab, Darwish, Al-Jarrah, and Saran. As my experience matured, I extended my inspiration to include visual aspects and even refer to my own inner feelings in my art. At this stage, I was more influenced by Syrian places and nature, such as Damascus and Mayadeen (my town of origin).

HOW DO YOU BALANCE TRADITIONAL CALLIGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES WITH MODERN ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS IN YOUR PIECES?

This is a good question that most traditional calligraphic artists struggle with. They can’t leave that zone. For me, I had an early understanding of what modern art experience required, so I decided to pursue my fine art study to complete my knowledge. That made it easier for me to transition my calligraphy reed pen into a brush while keeping the sense of calligraphy methods. Reaching a certain level of practice allows the artist to control tools smoothly.

WHAT MEDIUMS AND MATERIALS DO YOU PREFER TO USE, AND WHY?

In the past, I preferred watercolor-based techniques such as ink, natural pigment, and regular watercolor, which I used on paper. Later, I started using more and different materials, such as acrylic, collage, and printmaking. I mostly like ink on paper, but the topic directs me to the suitable medium. I feel very comfortable with acrylic, but I like to mix and experiment more.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED IN YOUR CAREER AND HOW YOU’VE OVERCOME THEM?

Once, a delivery person came to hand me something while I was working on a big piece of art. He was overwhelmed by watching the process and asked, “What is written there? I can’t figure out any

word. What does it say?” He was an ordinary person. I told him, “How do you find the painting? Beautiful or not?” He said it was very beautiful but he didn’t understand it. Beauty is the answer. Then I asked, “When you chant a melody of a song by yourself, does it matter if you remember the words?” He said, “Not at all.” Go listen to the nightingale and fly.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS OF CREATING A CALLIGRAPHIC PIECE TYPICALLY UNFOLD FOR YOU?

I follow my intuition and my experience, dividing the process as I believe in the moment. For large works and murals, I do sketches, sometimes very precise ones. For other works, I do rough sketches to give space for the flow and improvisation.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR GREATEST INFLUENCES OR MENTORS IN THE FIELD OF CALLIGRAPHY AND ART?

I’d say Rembrandt for his sense of color and the drama of light. Baroque mural works have made a big impact on my art. Later on, all that faded away in favor of poetry and nature. Poetry and works (the meaning behind words) dominated my influences. I could transfer nature into my own vision.

CAN YOU DISCUSS A PARTICULAR PIECE THAT HOLDS SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE TO YOU AND THE STORY BEHIND IT?

It is the story of my artwork based on Michigan Lake (the piece in the permanent collection of the UMMA). I was searching for a text, perhaps a poem, to create an art piece for the Watershed exhibition. I found a beautiful poem by Keith Taylor, which was already inspired by an artwork of James McNeill. The poet transformed the visual inspiration of the artist into literature. When I looked at the painting and then read the poem, I got different feelings, specifically from the poem, which gave me a different visual approach. What fascinated me was that the poet described nature as lines of words, and the dancer gave life to it. I immediately looked at the whole painting as a universe of letters. Letters replaced all named elements. The dancer is the flame of the movement of the water and the key to life. Waves are lines of the words of the poem (all translated into Arabic). I used the Diwany Jaly style (one of the most dynamic styles of Arabic calligraphy). Letters in the painting are doing a double mission: delivering the visual aspect of the poem and conveying the meaning (all are readable in Arabic). So even if you cannot read, you’ll visually get the message. The artist painted the view of Michigan Lake, then the poet did his interpretation, and I brought both the image and the words together in my own interpretation.

HOW DO YOU PERCEIVE THE ROLE OF CALLIGRAPHY IN TODAY’S CONTEMPORARY ART WORLD?

I think every artist, calligrapher, musician, or painter learns the foundational role to build their structure of work. Later on, their mission is to depart from that, to break it out, and create their own style. I always consider that the classic values of Arabic letters have the potential of generating endless shapes.

WHAT MESSAGE OR EMOTIONS DO YOU AIM TO CONVEY THROUGH YOUR ART?

Arabic letters and calligraphy can be used as visual elements that give the artist the chance to use them freely to express all that is going on inside and to communicate with the universe. Ibn Arabi said, “Letters are a nation among nations.”

HOW HAS YOUR WORK EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS, AND WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY?

It is like a snowball, keep growing and keep diverting, exploring, and never has a limit. I’m working on natural elements and pigment now. In parallel, I’m working on video and immersive art with my dear friend artist Med Bousoni, trying to apply the five senses in our work. Maybe one day I’ll do the journey backward, just ink and paper. Paper could be light and sensitive as skin.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING CALLIGRAPHERS AND ARTISTS WHO WISH TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

Believe in yourself. Reach the ultimate level of technique, but don’t rely on that. Always try to expand borders.

One of our greatest strengths at TAG Heuer is blending tradition with modernity. Other brands might focus solely on their heritage or on innovation, but we excel by merging these aspects to create something truly unique. This allows us to honor our past while innovating for the future. For example, our Carrera watches have evolved significantly since the 1960s and ‘70s, yet still retain their iconic essence. In my opinion, the most important thing in luxury is to make people dream, make them desire the brand. And so, that’s what I look for. There are many ways you can measure it. For example, we can look at sales or the coverage we receive. There is a type of research in brand study that we carry out every two to three years, where we measure our performance and desirability through a sequence of questions. But from a marketing perspective, we also focus on the impact. The amount of brand messaging and information we receive in today’s world is enormous. This is why the number one thing for the brand should be to emerge and set itself apart.

WATCHES AND WONDERS IS A MAJOR EVENT FOR THE WATCH INDUSTRY. WHAT IS TAG HEUER’S OBJECTIVE FOR PARTICIPATING THIS YEAR?

Yes, it is a big event in this industry and for every Maison. It’s also a tremendous investment. We often ask ourselves why we would want to be here, and I can tell you from my perspective, that the answer is because of the biggest threat that the watch industry is facing. There is a fear that maybe, one day, the young generation will say they no longer need watches. They have their smart digital devices. They will think the traditional watches are for the older generations. This is the biggest threat in our industry. This is why I believe participation in these events is important. A few times a year, the entire industry gets together and it generates a buzz that everyone, from mainstream media to micro influencers, will talk about. It’s a reminder that watches are still a very important part of us. From another perspective, we also see this event as a form of pure competition. At TAG Heuer, we don’t crack under pressure, so we put our best products forward. We know we have an amazing story to tell.

WHAT NEW PRODUCTS OR INNOVATION DID YOU SHOWCASE AT WATCHES AND WONDERS?

First and foremost, we have to talk about the new Monaco Rattrapante. It’s an incredible piece. A true haute horology statement. Thousands of hours went into producing this watch. Under the leadership of Carole Kasapi, our team developed an incredible movement that is once again, a perfect blend of the past and the future. We used to do the rattrapante movement in chronographs from 40 years ago, and we found a way to make it on the wrist, so it became incredibly desirable and special. This will be produced in a very, very limited quantity, and is sure to take people’s breath away.

THE SMART WATCH MARKET IS EVER EVOLVING. HOW IS TAG HEUER APPROACHING THIS SEGMENT AND INTEGRATING IT WITH ITS TRADITIONAL OFFERINGS?

The smart watches, or connected watches as we call them, is a huge market. It’s constantly growing and what is great is that we are leading it on the high-end segment. We are the first luxury watch brand to create connected watches. Most of the competition in this segment is only about design. TAG Heuer is not about gimmicks. It’s about credibility and authenticity. We have 60 software developers in Paris who are constantly working on this and improving our offerings. But to answer your question about how to balance the past and the future, to me, this is all about creating bridges. The connected watches help us approach customers who may not have been following us before, and at the same time, those who loved the brand because of its traditional elements may have been needing a watch that offered connectivity. It doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. This year, we introduced a new strategy where we’re creating watch faces for the connected versions and matching them with the novelties we introduced.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FUTURE OF LUXURY MARKETING IN A DIGITAL AGE?

The future is very difficult to predict, particularly when we’re talking about the digital age, because it’s rapidly changing. Moore’s Law suggests that that the computing power of microchips doubles approximately every 18 months. Artificial intelligence is a major topic. People are now starting to talk about it but not many are doing it well yet. The first movers will have an advantage because it will take time to master it. And that’s what we are doing at TAG Heuer. We are always prepared for the next step. We were extremely well-positioned during the coronavirus pandemic because we had our stateof-the-art website ready by February 2020. This gave us a tremendous advantage against the competition. We will continue pushing forward and embracing advanced technology.

We are pioneers in materials like titanium and ceramics. Inside our timepieces, we innovate with high-precision gears and silicon escapement wheels using diamond shell technology. This patented process creates ultra-lightweight parts with reduced friction and abrasion. Photolithography allows us to craft precise components for intricate complications like the moon display.

WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES ARISE WHEN YOU’RE DESIGNING FOR COMPLICATIONS OR SPECIAL FEATURES?

Complicated watches tend to grow larger with

added functions. We’ve addressed this in the Perpetual Calendar by minimizing visual case height with glass boxes on the top and bottom. This innovation not only creates a lighter look but also strengthens the case. Our new designs now boast five-bar water resistance, up from three-bar in older models.

HOW LONG DOES THE DESIGN PROCESS TYPICALLY TAKE?

It typically takes about a year from sketch to final design. From there, we need another year or more for testing and prototyping, plus time to create production tools. Depending on complexity, the entire process can span two to three years.

HOW DOES IWC CATER TO THE DIVERSE TASTES AND PREFERENCES OF ITS GLOBAL AUDIENCE?

Our global product portfolio, including the Pilots, Portugieser, Portofino, and Aquatimer collections, reflects varied tastes. Designed by Caroline Scheufele to adorn actresses on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival – which Chopard has been serving as official partner since 1998 – the Red Carpet Collection has established itself over the decades as the most eagerly awaited event in the Maison’s jewellery calendar. This year, 77 creations inspired by the world of Fairy Tales –‘Contes de Fées’ – will enchant La Croisette.

It has become a not-to-be-missed event featuring a line-up of new jewellery pieces corresponding to the venerable film festival’s edition number. This creative and technical challenge results in a collection rolled out each year in constantly reinvented forms, brilliantly illustrating Caroline Scheufele’s love for cinema and for the Cannes Film Festival.

Around the world, in every culture and at every stage in life, fairy tales are part of our collective imagination. These fabulous stories, often based on popular folklore, invite us to daydream and fling open the doors of our imagination. Enchanted forests, faraway kingdoms, talking animals, fantastic creatures with magical powers: these are the kind of childhood reminiscences that have inspired Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director Caroline Scheufele to create a brilliant and highly personal interpretation. In the fanciful world of Chopard’s ’Contes de Fées’, wonderment rubs shoulders with the majesty of enchanted Nature. A world composed of 77 one-of-a-kind creations, enhanced by the talent of passionate artisans.

Over the years, Chopard has paid tribute to the animal and plant kingdoms, demonstrating a remarkable talent for highlighting life in all its manifestations. Embodying a subtle blend of realism and fantasy, the creations in the Red Carpet Collection 2024 testify to this exceptional expertise.

Witness a sculptural necklace inspired by a majestic oak tree symbolizing strength and power as well as hosting a multitude of small animals, insects and birds – a tale in itself. This interlacing of ethical rose gold and titanium, offering a spectacular

technical interpretation of a design entirely executed by hand, took six months of work and the intervention of four jewellers and gemsetters. The result mingles titanium leaves set with tsavorites; ravishing flowers featuring clusters of flamboyant yellow briolette-cut sapphires; along with sculpted and then tinted titanium acorns.

At its foot grows an enchanting mushroom ring in ethical rose gold. Its delicate, finely ribbed cap is entirely set with white, orange, cognac and brown diamonds, skillfully arranged in a cut and color gradient.

At its side is a titanium sprig of lily of the valley, with its delightful diamond-set bell-shaped flowers and tiny yellow ethical gold pistils, designed to be worn as a brooch. Several years ago, driven by a desire to give free rein to its creativity while pushing the envelope in terms of technical constraints, Chopard opted for titanium. Rarely used in traditional jewellery, this metal features two extremely useful characteristics. Its extreme lightness means it can be used to design pieces that would be impossible to make in gold because of their size and weight. In addition, its ability to be tinted in a multitude of colors by anodization means it can stand alone or disappear beneath the finest gemsetting, taking on the color of the stones it surrounds, much like a chameleon.

In an ode to plant life, a long multicolored sautoir necklace appears adorned with a highly creative pendant. A flower of rubellites, tsavorites and coloured diamonds blossoms at the heart of a pristine rock crystal. Surrounding the crystal are nine individually hand-crafted titanium flowers. One particularly exquisite detail involves the random

micro-setting of the pistils, reinforcing the unique, larger-than-life feel of each bloom. This miniature painting is finished with tiny pearls that evoke morning dew delicately gracing the tsavorite leaves. Meanwhile, earrings twirl gracefully in the air, borne by two butterflies in ethical white gold set with two pear-shaped aquamarines. Symbolizing a light, carefree spirit, butterflies are foragers that sow the seeds of life and pollinate flowers. They are part of the enchanting world of fairy tales, in which small animals often turn out to be the heroes of great adventures.

A tiny creature emblematic of ’Contes de Fées’ is entrusted with a great responsibility! On the body of a ring in ethical yellow gold, two delightful little frogs in titanium set with pear-shaped emeralds support a crown set with rubellites and white and yellow diamonds. At the centre of this coveted attribute of royalty sits a magnificent 17.7-carat round-cut rubellite. Finally, she is inseparable from the world of ’Contes de Fées’, believed to have supernatural powers and the ability to influence the world of the living. She is at the centre of an airy, immaculate tiara, surrounded by a shower of stars and diamond droplets. “She” is a ravishing, heavenly fairy who spreads her graceful mother-of-pearl wings. With a wave of her magic wand, she is transformed into a brooch, within reach of a secret that might be whispered in her ear.

A secret that other two mischievous woodland fairies, seated on acorns set in the center of large titanium oak leaf earrings, would be delighted to intercept.

A jewellery watch to be worn in multiple ways, Vacheron Constantin’s Grand Lady Kalla returns in a highly original chapter that reflects the Maison’s long and rich history of jewellery and pendant watches.

The powerful bond between Vacheron Constantin and women has been forged throughout the Maison’s uninterrupted activity since its founding in 1755. Right from its early years – the oldest gemset piece in its private collection dates from 1812 – the Manufacture has cultivated creativity imbued with elegance matching fine craftsmanship in the realm of Haute Joaillerie. The Grand Lady Kalla now adds a dazzling new chapter to this tradition. Based on the design of the iconic Kalla introduced in 1980 – itself heir to the Kallista unveiled in 1979 – the new timepiece offers several ways of wearing it. A luminous treasure born from the virtuoso pairing and setting of more than 45 carats of exclusively emeraldcut diamonds, this model is an outstanding example of Vacheron Constantin’s creative freedom and expertise.

In 1979, Vacheron Constantin made watchmaking history with the Kallista, whose opulence –starring 130 carats of diamonds – was matched only by the innovation of Raymond Morretti’s design, a geometric rivière carved out of a solid gold ingot from which the watch’s 140 grams were drawn. Issued as a single-piece edition, it was the world’s most expensive watch creation. Its descendants were no less spectacular, as exemplified by the Kalla unveiled in 1980. Also sculpted from a block of 18K yellow gold sparkling with 108 emerald-cut diamonds totalling around 30 carats, the watch became so iconic that it inspired an eponymous collection whose singular creations have earned unanimous acclaim. One

notable example is the white gold Lady Kalla with a satin strap, which won the Jewellery Watch award at the first Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2001. Nine years later in 2010, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Lady Kalla, the Lady Kalla Flamme was presented, glowing with the fire of 57-facet diamonds and inaugurating the Flame cut, devised by Vacheron Constantin and duly approved by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). In 2024, the Grand Lady Kalla honours the name that inspired it, the Greek word Kallista meaning “the most beautiful”. From the first sketch in the design studio to the final polishing operation, the new creation embodies a wealth of superlatives. The subtlety of the adjustments is matched by their virtuoso execution. The 57 facets of the emerald-cut diamonds chosen for this new piece underline their crystal-clear clarity. Slightly slimmed down to reflect contemporary tastes, the dial is distinguished by the meticulous work of the master gem-setter who has adorned it with modernised prongs. Reduced to a minimum to provide space for the hands, they are triangular on the bracelet and case middle to highlight the stones; or pyramid-shaped to form the Maison’s iconic Maltese cross sparkling in the light. The sautoir necklace featuring onyx and diamonds, as well as Akoya pearl tassels chosen for their luster and their roundness, creates an appealing dialogue between Art Deco and the 21st century.

Durrah experienced the Rolls-Royce Spectre through the cultural heart of Abu Dhabi, an environment that perfectly complemented the car’s exquisite design. Spectre’s design draws inspiration from worlds far beyond automotive, including haute couture, modernist sculpture, nautical design, tailoring and contemporary art. In particular, the design takes cues from the clarity and precision of line and intelligent use of reflection in modern racing yacht styling. Spectre’s Pantheon grille is the widest ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce. The polished stainlesssteel vanes are smooth and flush-fitting, and softly illuminated with 22 LEDs lighting up the sandblasted rear surface, creating a subtle three-dimensional signature at night. The Spirit of Ecstasy figurine was specially created for Spectre. With a lower stance and more aerodynamic profile, perfected over 830 hours of design modelling and wind-tunnel testing, it contributes to the motor car’s drag coefficient of just 0.25cd, making Spectre the most aerodynamic RollsRoyce ever built. With the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology (energy consumption combined: 30.327.7 kWh/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A), the brand with the threepointed star presents the first fully electric variant of its off-road icon. Like the conventionally powered variants, its body is built on a ladder frame. The development team has modified and reinforced this to integrate the electric drive. Also retained is the combination of independent front suspension with double wishbones and newly developed rigid rear axle. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the ladder frame ensures a low center of gravity. With its usable capacity of 116 kWh, it provides sufficient energy for ranges of up to 473 kilometers according to WLTP.2

With four individually controlled electric motors close to the wheels, the all-new electric G-Class offers unique driving characteristics both on and off road. It is the first mass-produced vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz Group with individual-wheel drive. The four motors are integrated in the ladder frame – two in each housing at the front and rear axles.

They are driven via short half-shafts, meaning the rear electric motors can also be bolted to the chassis.

Louvre Abu Dhabi has opened its first exhibition of the year, From Kalīla wa Dimna to La Fontaine: Travelling through Fables, following its inauguration by His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman at Department of Culture and TourismAbu Dhabi and Louvre Abu Dhabi Chairman.

Held in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France and France Muséums and with the support of Van Cleef and Arpels, the exhibition showcases a collection of ancient tales and illustrated fables.

Curated by Annie Vernay-Nouri, Former Chief Curator, Oriental Manuscripts Department, Bibliothèque nationale de France, the exhibition draws inspiration from traditional illustrated fables and delves into the world of animal tales embedded within historical manuscripts. With more than 132 artworks on display, the exhibition features a collection of rare manuscripts, paintings, contemporary works, and more — unveiling narratives of friendship, loyalty, cunning, and morality, as portrayed through anthropomorphic animal characters.

The exhibition is divided into three main sections – Travelling Tales, Telling Stories, and The Fables Today – taking visitors on a voyage of texts over time through their various adaptations and translations. Several prominent pieces from France, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will be showcased throughout.

Notable loans from Louvre Abu Dhabi’s partners

include one of the oldest illustrated manuscripts of Kalīla wa Dimna, by Ibn al-Muqaffa and dating back to the Ayyubid dynasty(1171-1250 CE); The Two Adventurers and the Wondrous Writ by JeanBaptiste Oudry, draughtsman Bonaventure Louis Prévost; Portrait of Jean de La Fontaine by Émile Bayard, draughtsman L. Wolff (engraver); and La Fontaine composant ses fables [La Fontaine writing his fables] by François Vayron, engraver.

As part of the museum’s continuous efforts to offer compelling and engaging experiences, Louvre Abu Dhabi is utilizing artificial intelligence for the first time within the mediation devices for this exhibition, allowing visitors to create their own fable via touch tables and download their composition by scanning a QR code. Visitors can customize their fables by selecting characters and the moral of the story, which they can then keep and share with their children and loved ones.

To complement the exhibition, Louvre Abu Dhabi has curated a range of cultural and educational programs to elevate the overall visitor experience. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of fables with insightful curatorial talks, along with a series of film screenings that explores themes of morality, wisdom, and the power of storytelling. Louvre Abu Dhabi has organized a line-up of talks for engaging discussions on various aspects of fables.
