URBAN MOBILITY AND PUBLIC SPACES

Academics Year: 5 Semester: 9/10 Project Guide: Ar.Dipal Chhaya Year: 2020 Programme:Transit interchange

WHY DOES MUMBAI REQUIRE PUBLIC SPACE? HOW WILL THIS SPACE REACT TO THE PUBLIC? WHAT WILL BE THE TARGET GROUP? WILL ITS SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF CONGESTION? WHAT KIND OF LANGUAGE WILL IT FOLLOW? HOW WILL IT ATTRACT THE PUBLIC?

SHOULD IT BE CONNECTED TO THE UPCOMING METRO PROJECT?

9 million residents of the Informal City inhabit population densities of 200,000 person/sq.km and above. Five clusters of informal settlements in Mumbai have a population of 1 million or more.

The basic reqiurement for the development of most of the human activities is being able to move around a city. The daily trips between home and work, study, liesure and other daily commitments are not always done under most comfortable conditions. Places that are more coneected and located in more socially desirable areas are considered more valuable. Some people decide to live according to their financial status. This puts certain people close to the place of theri work and some far away from the same. In a city high quality mobility is a necessity for the success of other urban sectores and the creation of jobs and plays a key role in urban development. 5

Till 1970-80 all the activities took place on the streets with maximum public interactions. Until mid 20th century, streets together with plazas and squares were an integrated system of movement space that contributed to defining the cultural, social, economic and political life of the city.

Although cars are part of the cityscape and need to be considered when planning. We should strive to create a balanced city environment.

As the vehicular movement increased these activities were pushed inside which ended the basic idea of a public space. The modernist idea of zoning which facilitated the division of city in functional areas, the experience of moving has been associated with the concept of transport.

By investing in walking and cycling with a commitment to social equity, these cities have animated people to move in the streets and improved the quality of life and made the neighborhoods more accessible and interconnected.

The streets should have natural vibrancies and were dynamic and multifunctional spaces. In this diagram the public realm is lifted above the ground level which decongests the space below.

6

While the overall mobility has improved over the years, due to the high sprawl, the accessibility for various services for most city dwellers has gone down, and so has the overall speed in terms of vehicular traffic on roads Urban public transport is mainly used by city dwellers who may be employed in the formal sector. Urban congestion has been a common phenomenon on Indian roads, primarily because various kinds of vehicles move at different speeds, and there does not exist any appreciable degree of separation of lanes for different modes of transportation. Traffic for the most part of the day on Indian roads is generally slow, and it is not because of the high volume of vehicular traffic, but due to low uncongested mobility.

7

Increasing congestion in the cities creates a vicious cycle, particularly for cities where trains constitute a mode of public transportation, as service delays stemming from train operators force commuters to shift from trains to personal modes of transportation. Some of the widely employed methods to ease congestion on roads have been through the laying of new roads, building flyovers, among others, which have only contributed to increasing congestion and sprawl in the urban areas. A case in point is that of Bandra–Worli Sea Link, which does not allow pedespedes trians, cyclists, two-wheelers, and auto-rickshaws. The attempts to ensure that infrastructure for motorised transport is adequate have demonstrated that they are bound to fail, as the supply has not been able to match the rising urbanisation in India.

The real segregation in Mumbai is the east-west one. Eastern Mumbai and the western parts are separated culturally as well as economically. Western Mumbai dominates the Mumbai scene almost totally and the east is viewed as some kind of appendage whose existence is barely acknowledged. This has historical roots, because the east was about ports, goods loading docks, mills and factories, the west was used mainly to build apartment blocks, cinemas and promenades.Interestingly, the east is the focus now of a lot of economic activity. Since the west is over-constructed, the action has shifted to the eastern suburbs.

VILE PARLE MASS HOUSING

Academics Year: 4 Semester: 8 Project guide: Ar.Nitin Killawala Ar.janki Shah Year: 2020 Programme: Mass Housing

The brief of the project was to create housing for a very densely packed low rise. This housing proposal is designed to allow renting or buying of the living unit. All other facilities and property remain public, owned by the city or a co-operative composed of the resiresi dents. This arrangement of ownership would relieve residents of the major problems 9f building and grounds maintenance, while retaining small private outdoo spaces for gardening, and other recreational activities. The solution emphasizes the living unit, with undulating facade and garden walls. In this manner, a richness and variety is achieved in the spacial sequence. 13

Site Sections

TOD, or transit-oriented development, means integrated urban places designed to bring people, activities, buildings, and public space together, with easy walking and cycling connection between them and near-excellent transit service to the rest of the city. The site in this project was Bandra, which has the upcoming metro project coming up which was supposed to be integrated with the railway stationand the bus depot. The aim was to create a space which acts like a connector between these three com modes of transportalong with commercial and residential spaces. 25

The purpose of this project was to create a cultural centre in the place of the historic Rang Bhavan along with an event space and lodging for the artists. The functions of the space is determined by the staggereing floor plates. The site is next to the St.Xaviers college which has a very Victorian language throughout, keeping this in mind the structure had to follow the exisisting language and not create something foreign. The structure comprises of classrooms, studios, recording studios, dancing studios, speech and drama centre and a Music centre. 31

BRIDGE A ACTS LIKE A CONNECTOR AS WELL AS A FUNCTIONAL CORIDOR. IT HAS DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS LINED UP ALONG THE LENGTH.

THE BRIDGE IS A DOUBLE HEIGHTED SPACE WITH A NARROW CORIDOR WITH CLASSROOMS,FACULTY ROOMS AND DIRECTOR’S ROOM ON ONE SIDE

Site Study

MAHAPALIKA MARG IS THE PRIMARY ROAD WHICH CONNECTS METRO THEATRE,AZAD MAIDAN AND CST.

CANTEEN ACTING LIKE A CONNECTOR TO THE KITCHEN/ACCOMODATION AND THE PRIMARY ENTRY.

IT ALSO CONNECTS MARINE LINES STATION TO CST.

OVERLAPPING OF PLANES AND VOLUMES FACILITATE A SMOOTH CIRCULATION

PEOPLE FROM AZAD MAIDAN AND THE TWO STATIONS USE THIS ROAD TO COMMUTE. THERE IS A BIG FOOTFALL LEADING TO WIDER FOOTPATHS UPTO 10M TO FACILITATE SMOOTH MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE.

PRESENCE OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES AROUND THE SITE HAS BIG INFLUENCE ON THE SITE. ST.XAVIERS, ELPHINSTONE TECHNICAL COLLEGE FOLLOW THE VICTORIAN STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE. THE FOOTFALL AROUND THE SITE IS ON THE YOUNGER AGE GROUP.

OVERLAPPING OF SPACES AND VOLUMES WITH A HYBRID CHARECTER GIVES DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES . THE BRIDGE ACTS LIKEA CONNECTOR,CORIDOR AND CLASSROOMS AND FACULTY ROOMS.

St. Xaviers College Case Study

THE WALKWAYS/CORIDORS ARE VERY WIDE WHICH ARE INTERCEPTED WITH PUBLIC INTERFACES SUCH AS CANTEEN,BASKETBALL COURTS AND COURTYARDS. THIS GESTURE OF PUBLIC INTERFACES AND COURTYARDS MAKE THE GROUND FLOOR VERY PORUS AND LIGHT IN MASS.

33

THE MASS OF THE STRUCTURE IS PUSHED OUTWARD ALONG THE PERIPHERY OF THE PLOT.THE STRUCTURE IS PUNCTURED WITH 3 QUADRANGLES THAT SERVE AS COURTYARDS.

Electricity generation in electric eels

Exchange between k+ (potassium) and na+(sodium) in the cell to generate electricity.this exchange is called Na-K ATPase pump.

Project Guide:Ar.Atrey Chhaya, Ar.Mahek Lalan, Ar.Disha Saigal Project Partner:Aditya Samant Year: 2017 Programme: Interactive Pod Site: College Coridor

The exchange between posotive and negative ions which causes a flow of current which helps the eel to generate electricity.

Spinal Cord Main Organ Hunters Organ

Electric fish generate electricity in a similar way to nerves and muscles in our own bodies. Inside the electrocyte cells, special enzyme proteins called Na-K ATPase pump sodium ions out through the cell membrane and potassium ions in.Its simple function is to pump 3 sodium ions out for every 2 potassium ions taken in and since they both have equal ionic charges, this creates a electrochemical gradient between a cell and its exterior. The protein can also let the reverse operation happen, thus harnessing the energy it has stored in the form of an electric field potential. The reverse process is, unlike the forward, spontaneous. The Na+/K+-ATPase helps maintain resting potential, effect transport, and regulate The first detail shows stacks of electrocytes, cells linked in series cellular volume. So there is an exchange (to build up voltage) and parallel (to build up current). between the cell membrane which creates an imbalance between the ions which generates electrical forces. And this exchange is carried out by the ATP pump. 55

EXPERIENTIAL MARKETS

Academics Year: 4 Semester: 8 Project Guide: Ar.Atrey Chhaya Ar.Ritu Mohanty Year: 2020 Programme:Multi Functioining Market Site: Andheri Station Market

Market Cities are places with strong networks for the distribution of healthy, locally-produced food and other goods produced in local and territorial regions near cities. They have large central markets that act as hubs for the region and function as great multi-use destinations, with many activities clustering nearby; moving out into the neighborhoods, these cities contain many smaller, but still substantial neighborhood markets that sell all the necessities for daily needs; in between, you’ll find small corner grocers, weekly farmers markets, flea and artisan markets, produce carts, and other small-scale distribution points. Urban market systems in the 21st century can be vital centers of exchange connecting rural and urban environments and places that anchor local culture and social life for all residents. 61

The exsisting park is right in the heart of JVPD Scheme. The goal was to redesign it consedering all age groups along with a cycling path with an pedestrian path. One edge of the park also serves as a local market for locals. The pond offers a variety of fishes. The amphitheatre serves as a performance space cum play area for kids. The grand pavillion serves as a seating space for the parents or senior citizens who can supervise their young ones. The form is inspired from the cracks in the earth’s surface and the tidal activity as well. 67

The subconscious realm is a confluence of thoughts and emotions, away from the compulsion of tangibility and actuality. This raw and intertwined state is characterized by jumbling up of thoughts and ideas, which move about, reeect, collide an merge to generate concepts. This arrangement takes place in various dimensions and layers, causing commotion and creating patterns of chance interactions. This chaos enables the functioning of the unabashed realm, giving it layers of thoughts and emotions which solidify into ideas. Thus, ‘Confluence’ is an abstract depiction of the subconscious realm- the vegetative propeller of thoughts and emotions. It highlights theinteraction and mixing of various elements- in diierent dimensions and layers- using reflection, collision and combination as its primary principles. 71
