The DUT Racing year 2012-2013 has started and with that over seventy students embark on the journey of one year Formula Student. More than 90% of the DUT13 team is completely new to Formula Student. They will now experience a challenging and exciting new level of education. In this newsletter the new team and team structure will be introduced elaborately to you. The last couple of months have been fully devoted to team building and concept development. Because before building a car, you need to build a team.

Team Manager We have begun! The 13th year of Formula Student Delft has already been working for two months now. This year’s team consists of 76 enthusiastic future engineers ready for the challenge to design, build and test a real race car within ten months. The past year I have had the privilege to observe Formula DUT Racing from the sideline. I was completely astonished by the inexhaustible motivation and devotion with which team members worked on the car. I experienced up close, that the realization of this imaginable child boy’s dream does not happen without any obstacles. You need to use your brains and still it costs a lot of time, and perseverance. But, after 80 000 hours, frequent sleepless nights and hundreds of liters of coffee, a pinnacle of engineering is born. It is not only in Delft that students put that much effort into building a Formula Student car, this happens all over

the world and is done by over 450 teams. With an average of thirty people per team this sums up to a total of 13 000 students turning blood, sweat and tears into such a wonderfull car. At the Formula Student events, these teams meet one another. It is great and by far exceptional to experience the lack of rivalry and healthy competitiveness that occurs during the Formula Student competition. The energy that has been put into the car is completely swapped for positive feelings, respect and curiosity for one another’s design. It really is the engineering passion that unites all these students. That is, in my opinion, the great thing about this project and for this reason I am proud to be part of this team. Meanwhile, I am already involved with the project for two months now, and it is very addictive to cooperate with so many students who share the same goal. - Marius Knol -
DUT13 Team This year’s team consists of six different sub-teams. The first being the core team, the managing directors of the whole. Eight students fully devote themselves to one year Formula Student and set aside their study to form this first sub-team.
The members of the core team work full-time on the project and are the managers of the whole team, or of a department; in which part-time involved students are responsible for the design and production of one part of the car. The Chief Engineer oversees the design and production of the car. The Technical Manager is Marius Knol – Team Manager responsible for the project planning and resource Reinier Alberda – Chief Engineer management. The departments have the following responsibilities: Vehicle Dynamics: Achieving the highest possible accelerations in every direction, this is the goal of the Vehicle Dynamics department. Fifteen engineers involved in designing control systems, aerodynamics and the best possible execution of the spring damper system and geometry pick-up point position assignment.
Powertrain is responsible for the high voltage implementation. The accumulator is a very complex part of the car and this year the focus lies on building a great accumulator and integrating the high voltage wiring and battery management system perfectly. Operations: Responsible for teambuilding, communication and the organisation of events. A nice example of communication by operations is this newsletter! Operations is responsible for the website, facebook, the journey to the Formula Student events, the design presentation, the roll-out and much more.
Chassis: The design and production of the monocoque and driver interface is the responsibility of the chassis department. This involves a lot of production of composites. Receiving energy from the powertrain, the motors and motor controllers of the car generate torque to put on the road. This torque is amplified by the transmission of the car. The generation of torque comes with the generation of heat. Therefore, the cooling system is also the responsibility of the drivetrain department.

Marly Kuijpers My name is Marly Kuijpers, I am an Aerospace Engineering student. I have joined the DUT Racing team this year and my responsibility in the team is the design of the front transmission. I work on this design together with Anton, one of the part-timers. I am not a part-timer but I am doing DUT Racing as a minor. This means that I can work full-time on the project for half a year as a part of the TU Delft curriculum. What I think is fascinating about a project such as DUT Racing is that I can turn my theoretical knowledge into practice.

We have already got to know each other better by having a dinner this month and we are planning to have activities other then “work” once a month. Yes, it is serious business being a part of this team. But the atmosphere in the team is really good. We can laugh a lot with each other, besides the fact that we work really hard as well!
Events • 1 City Racing Rotterdam On August 26, the DUT11 gave a demonstration at City Racing Rotterdam. • 2 City Rally The Hague The DUT12 was present at the Electric Mobility gathering organized by the city council of The Hague on September the 15th.

• 3 AutomotiveNL Career Event On September the 18th the DUT12 was present at the AutomotiveNL career event to show the level of innovation that went into her design. • 4 Team Kart outing September the 27th, the whole team went karting at “Attractiecentrum Zoetermeer” since it is a nice teambuilding opportunity but also these kart outings are traditionally the first phase of driver selection.

• 5 Ecomobielbeurs On October the 9th and 10th the biggest fair on sustainable mobility in the Benelux went on at Ahoy Rotterdam namely the “Ecomobielbeurs”. Our smart and innovative DUT12 was present.

• 6 EEAC/RLI Conference “Keep moving towards Sustainable Mobility” was the topic of this conference on the S.S. Rotterdam on October the 11th. • 7 TU Delft Alumni Day On the occasion of 170 years TU Delft (the 34th lustrum), the TU Delft organized an alumni day on Friday October the 12th. Over 200 alumni visited the DUT Racing workplace.

• 8 TU Delft Open Days On Friday October the 19th and Monday October the 22nd it was time for the TU Delft Open Days. Next to guided tours, lectures and workshops there were information markets on every faculty. The DUT Racing team was present at the information markets of 4 different faculties.
