Signs and Wonders: A STORY OF PEACE

Mermelstein* went to Bais Temima Elementary School, which has a simchah hall. She loved her school, but even as a child, she couldn’t imagine getting married there. She couldn’t imagine walking into her wedding through the same door that she had walked through every day for nine years as a schoolgirl. It was just too familiar.

Whenever Kayla fantasized about her wedding, as many girls do, she would be sure to mention to her mother, “but not at Bais Temima.”

When Kayla became engaged to Yaakov Katz, she reminded her mother, “Please, Mommy, don’t make the wedding at Bais Temima.” However, that hall was the most reasonably priced in town, significantly less than the others. “I’m sorry,” her mother told her sincerely. “But this is what we can afford. It’s beautiful and the food is delicious, and you won’t be missing anything. You’ll see, you’ll be so excited that you won’t even know where you are.”

While Kayla did have her preferences, she wasn’t spoiled. She graciously backed down, assuring her mother, “I know that whatever you do for me will be perfect.”

As the date of the wedding came closer, Yaakov’s mother, who lived in Brooklyn, decided to book a makeup artist in Kayla’s hometown for the day of the wedding. She got one recommendation, a woman named Chana, and she called. But when she told her the date, Chana said she was booked for another wedding.

“Well, I’m the chassan’s mother,” Mrs. Katz said. “Our pictures aren’t taken until later in the afternoon, so you could come to me after the other family.”

Chana thought that would work. “Where is the wedding?”

“At Bais Temima,” she told Chana.

“Oh, you must be marrying into the Levine family!” she said. “They are the ones who booked me for March 31 and they are also at Bais Temima. Funny that you both booked me separately.”

“Well, no, our mechutanim are Mermelstein,” said Mrs. Katz. “Maybe you should check with the Levines to make sure they gave you the right date. Because March 31 at Bais Temima is the Katz-Mermelstein wedding. No Levines.”

When Chana contacted Mrs. Levine, she was shocked to hear that the hall was doublebooked. Meanwhile, Mrs. Katz called Mrs.

“Maybe you should check with the Levines to make sure they gave you the right date.”
