My Pattern Swatchbook
When I was a child, I had a special pillow for sleeping and on the cover were motifs of baking ingredients and tools. I spent long afternoons staring at the pillowcase making up stories of a baker girl making delicious sweets from scratch. This pattern series of paper cut illustrations is to commerate those childhood afternoons and to celebrate the beauty of making things with your own hands.
This is an old sketch I did of a girl among the flowers on a Spring afternoon. When I first knew that the project was about laser cutting, I envisioned a Chinese paper cut - an exquisite pattern delicately cut on a large piece of paper that repeats. Also, the thick black brushstrokes in this sketch are coincidentally joined up which makes a good starting point. Thus I connected all the strokes even more and came up with repeating patterns and 2 pieces of laser cuts that almost has a dreamy, lace-like quality.
