fore word
Merry Christmas everyone, or if you prefer, Seasons Greetings! Here at DV8, December signals the start of our favourite holiday, it's time to get ready for the famous fat guy in the red suit, scoff lots of mince pies and turkey and drink enough mulled wine and bubbly to ensure we are permanently merry! We hope you have all been behaving!.. Although in our experience the December party season seems to encourage a lot of misbehaviour. We have staggered through a lot of Christmas parties and had more than our fair share of drunken kisses under the mistletoe. Although, speaking from personal experience hooking up at a Christmas party can be the best thing that can happen to you!
It's kind of crazy to think another year has gone by in Oxford, so much has happened in the last twelve months. We have attended a lot (and we mean a lot) of fantastic events, with too many to mention but a few! Our favourites have to be Oxford Fashion Week (be sure to check this out next year as we hear it is going to be bigger and better than ever before!), various events thrown by the Oxford Retreat including their recent 5 year birthday celebrations (check out our review on page 08). We also welcomed some great new venues to the Oxford nightclub scene with Lola Lo and The Junction opening their doors, both becoming firm favourites with us here at DV8. Enough time reflecting, time to look forward and think about what we are going to do on those all important social dates of Christmas and New Years Eve! If you’re stuck for ideas, why not enter our NYE competition in association with the Living Room on p04. Whatever you end up doing, we hope you have fun, and we look forward to seeing you next year, where we will be back, bigger and better than ever before! Love the DV8 Oxford Team xxx

THE DV8 HOT LIST
Regal Closing – DV8 were very sad to learn that The Regal on Cowley Road is set to close at the end of 2011. We have enjoyed some fantastic evenings there over the last few years, from big name DJ’s and bands through to classic club nights, each night at The Regal always promised something different. If you want to check it out for one last time (or perhaps your first time!) then head over to www.the-regal.com to find out what events they have remaining for the rest of the year! Christmas Market - One of the most enjoyable activities to get you in the festive spirit on the run up to Christmas is a visit to Oxford Castle’s Christmas Market. Packed with seasonal treats, the DV8 team loves browsing the various arts and crafts stores (and of course sampling some of the delicious food and drink available – the smell is always so tempting!) So if you are stuck for gift ideas, make sure that you take a look. Open daily, see www.oxfordcastle.com for more details.
The period between Christmas and New Years - This often feels like it’s a bit of a black hole, with not a lot going on other than Turkey sandwiches and searching out unwanted gift receipts! Well this year DV8 have been doing our research and if you head over to our website www.dv8oxford.co.uk we will provide you with full events listings (we like to see it as a little warm up before New Years Eve).

COMFY CAFE
After the recent closure of some of DV8’s favorite Jericho hang outs, including the Big Bang and Bottega, we worried that one of our most loved parts of the city had taken a turn for the worse. So, we have been relieved to see that there has recently been the introduction of a couple of new shops to the area, and one of these is the lovely and inviting, Comfy Café. We have been keeping a close eye on this new addition, slowly watching the cafe take shape and we were really pleased when it finally opened it’s doors at the beginning of December. Offering a range of hot and cold beverages (bearing in
DV8 OXFORD /// December 2011
mind how cold it is, I think we will only be having the hot drinks!), delicious snacks and treats and of course a place to sit, relax and catch up with friends (you can think of this as Oxfords answer to Central Perk), we have already been eyeing up the sofa which we will be sitting on! This is a welcome addition to the Jericho scene, and we will be making many a frequent visit to the cafe on all our long walks between Jericho and the centre of Oxford (or maybe even to sober up a little bit after having a cocktail in one of the fine cocktail bars next door!
THE ONE
A new restaurant is opening on the Botley Road. The One, which is located right next to the train station is promising western cuisines with a Chinese influence, this sounds delicious and we really can’t wait to go and try it out! The refit has taken quite a while to complete (a total of twelve months), but we are sure it has been worth the wait. The restaurant also boasts parking spaces, which for Oxford is a bonus that is unheard of. The restaurant is being run by Raymond Chu, who also runs The Paddyfields on Hythe Bridge Street, another one of our favourites, so this is bound to be a hit!

O
n Thursday 24th November DV8 were excited to attend The Oxford Retreat’s 5th birthday. The Retreat is one of Oxford’s most loved bars and we have enjoyed many meals and nights out there (including last month’s fantastic charity gig in aid of Oxford Air Ambulance). So we were looking forward to another delightful night bought to us from the great staff at the Retreat, and we were definitely not disappointed!
The party had an amazing Casino Royale theme - with lots of eye-catching fancy dress (including a number of wannabe bonds and glamorous bond girls), 2 bands, a roulette table & croupier and even canapés to tickle our tastebuds. Who could ask for a better end to the week? With free entry and a complimentary Martini (shaken not stirred, naturally!) on arrival, everyone was in the party mood. We loved our Martini and felt uber glam sipping it at the bar! Later, we enjoyed trying our luck on the roulette table, which got quite competitive, adding to the thriving atmosphere as more and more people joined us. We really enjoyed listening to the live music, which provided a cool soundtrack to the evening and kept guests entertained into the night. As we looked around at the dressed up partygoers, it could really have been a scene from a bond movie! The only thing missing was a visit from Daniel Craig… We wish The Oxford Retreat a very happy anniversary and we hope that there are many more years to come of awesome nights like this – it was like we felt famous in our own local, which is something you definitely can’t complain about! We look forward to plenty more parties at the Retreat in the New Year! DV8 OXFORD /// December 2011

SPOTLIGHT ON TRAPS DV8 are proud to be introducing the latest music talent to hit Oxford – TRAPS! Rog (guitarist), Tim (bassist), Pete (drummer) and Alexis (lead vocalist) make up TRAPS (which you might notice is a nifty acronym of their names) and have been hitting the music scene in and around Oxford for the past couple of months. We went to see them last month and really felt like we were watching the beginning of something unique, we are looking forward to following their progress and eager to see what they get up to next! We urge you to look out for them playing in the new year as they are definitely a band to watch out for. So far they have played a couple of local gigs, and are really starting to feel at home on stage, their last gig saw them showcased at the Bullington Arms on Cowley road alongside such great local acts as dananananaykroyd who are the band’s huge heroes. The band were really excited to be playing alongside an act they have admired for so long and it really showed in their performance how happy they were to be among such stars. When asking the band how they would describe their distinctive style, Rog said ‘Our music is like PJ Harvey meeting Juliette and the Licks at the meat counter at a Waitrose…’…what a combination! We have to agree the band definitely boast an original sound which is nothing like what we’ve heard in Oxford and we predict that their crowds will increase with each gig. We were really impressed when we saw them and especially loved the individual tone to Lex’s voice. She sang with the passion and edge of an already famous lead singer and didn’t look daunted by the screaming crowd. DV8 also loved the combination of Lex’s voice with Rog’s, this bought a quirky element to the gig and made sure we were kept on our toes. If we had to compare TRAPS to one of our favourite bands,
we would have to go for Paramore, although we are sure that TRAPS will bring forward an altogether more heavy and dynamic tone to their music. We can only predict that TRAPS will constantly surprise us at gigs to come! TRAPS came together with a love of live music in common and a desire to write songs that are real and heartfelt. This was obvious when we saw them and we were really looking forward to being able to sing along to their already anthem-like tunes. Their influences are huge and varied, from Black Sabbath to Death from Above 1979 and Bjork. They are really happy to be playing in and around Oxford which is where so many great acts have begun (Radiohead, Supergrass and The Foals all began in and around Oxford). When asking TRAPS why they believe Oxford is such a good place to propel them into the spotlight of the music scene they said ‘The Oxford scene is so important and thriving against the current economic pressures we all feel’..which is a statement we definitely agree with! We look forward to seeing so much more from TRAPS, they have plans to finish their very first ep early next year and will be playing lots more gigs around Oxford and London. Here at DV8 we are excited to see what happens next!

ave you experienced the following? A cold winters night on George Street, arguing with your friends about where to go next, some people want to dance to the old skool classics, others want a little RnB or hip hop and there is always one desperate to listen to some indie music... Sometimes it feels impossible to please everyone!.. Never fear, Wahoo has the answer! Their new Friday night is dedicated to a pick ‘n’ mix of all musical tastes! DJ Olly East took to the desks playing a brilliant mix of tunes spanning all genres to the delight of the Wahoo partygoers and of course... us!

THE LODGE VIP OPENING
fter a brief hiatus, The Lodge Gentlemen’s Club has returned to Oxford. Located on the site of the old Coven Club, it promises a rounded experience for discerning ladies and gentlemen. So when we got the invite to go along to the launch night we thought it would be rude to turn it down. On entering, we were greeted by a couple of attractive ladies offering a glass of champagne before moving into a room seductively lit with muted lighting, swathed in red velvet with a long bar offering plenty of tempting drinks deals. It was clear that this was going to be an enjoyable evening. welcoming in the ladies, so we expect to see burlesque nights and other such Indeed the crowd was treated to some events. As it was, we got to see the lovely great performances and all of the girls Valerie Vegas perform at midnight. If you are looking DV8’s perspective, it is certainly going for a place to celebrate in style this about it in the right way. f like us, you did the majority of your growing up in the nineties, then you will have a great appreciation for the music that came from the nineties! Some of the best anthems of all time came from this decade (there are so many to choose from that we found it hard to think of our favourite, perhaps Wonderwall by Oasis!) We were really excited to learn that The Junction were opening up their Friday nights to a night of live pre-millennium anthems. All of our favourites were played and it really took us back to remembering how awesome music used to be! Oh well, back to 2011 with a bang!

The 2nd Oxford Fashion Campus UNICEF Fashion Show and Charity Auction took place at the end of November at the luxurious Malmaison Hotel. The converted prison provides a stylish backdrop and an intimate setting for a spectacular runway show. This year’s show was held in partnership with LK Bennett, a quintessentially English, ‘accessible luxury’ brand, which is favored by many celebrities and has been thrust into the fashion spotlight as being Kate Middleton’s go-to brand for shoes. We here at DV8 are huge fans of Kate’s elegant and classic style and have spotted her wearing leg lengthening wonder shoe ‘Sledge’ at Royal Ascot and beautiful ‘Agata’ at the Ark Gala dinner, William and Kate’s first official Royal engagement as a married couple. The OFC UNICEF Fashion Show highlight was a stunning 70s style red coat from LK Bennett that the Duchess of Cambridge wore on her official visit to the UNICEF Global Supply Centre. DV8 also loved this season’s it bag ‘Anna’ in an on trend snake print. You can check out the A/W collection for yourself at LK Bennett, 10 High Street, Oxford. All proceeds from this fabulous fashion event went to UNICEF, in particular the Japan Earthquake Tsunami Appeal and Turkey Earthquake Appeal.

o.9 is back with a bomb! After a few months away, DV8 is delighted to hear that Friday nights at No.9 are being given a new lease of life with The Bomb, a club night exclusively for Oxford students. With celebrity guests including the larger than life act, 2 Shoes of X Factor fame and the opportunity to win cash prizes, those of us without student ID will definitely be missing out *sob*. No.9 looks set to be the student venue of choice for the weekend in 2012. The club is currently having a New Year makeover, however, we hear that the Bomb Fridays will be back in January...

e love Fridays, signalling the end of the working week they can’t come round fast enough! For a guaranteed perfect start to the weekend DV8 likes to visit Roppongi, the chic, luxurious lounge bar on George Street. Roppongi, offers the best place to unwind, drink, and dance if the fancy takes you. Personally we like to kick back in the V.I.P section with a bottle of champagne! If you have a birthday to celebrate or perhaps just want to celebrate the start of the weekend in style then this is a fantastic way to do it. Great music, drinks and people, roll on next Friday!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Whether you’re one of those organised ones who buys everything and wraps weeks in advance, a last-minute Christmas Eve rush purchaser or a cynical Boxing Day bargain hunter, the pressure is on to buy everyone’s presents on a tighter budget than ever this year.
So how do you get around saving money without making yourself look really tight? There are lots of ways to do it. Plan in advance and take advantage of the 3 for 2 deals lots of shops are offering. Wait for an online money-off day. Grab a half price voucher – we’re doing some great ones this month in the Glide Shop at www.glidefm.co.uk
Or, if you’ve got a spare day or couple of evenings, make your own. Everybody loves food and there are some brilliant tips from chefs on making edible gifts – like Masterchef winner and Wahaca founder Thomasina Miers who is running a 7 week festive food blog with Yahoo’s Lifestyle website which has some great suggestions. It’s not just your granny who likes home baked gifts – think of choc-laden truffles, fruit infused booze or homebrew beer, or decorated mince pies wrapped in ribboned gift boxes. You’re bound to find something to suit even the most difficult to buy for friend or relative. I hope that’s given you some good suggestions for saving the pennies this Christmas – so you can keep in the black rather than spilling over into the festive but painful red. Merry Christmas!

CULINARY DELIGHTS
Covered Market, Oxford, 01865 241613
We at DV8 really love our comfort foods, especially when it is so cold outside! And what could be better than tucking into a delicious piping hot pie on a cold winters day? We decided to drop by the Covered Markets, Pie Minister to sample some of their tasty looking pies. Just the site of the pies in the shop window leaves our mouths watering! Pie and mash shops have recently had a real resurgence, but this time around we are not talking about the kind of pies you get from the chip shop, but gourmet pies, using the finest free-range and locally sourced fillings. Pie Minister has been leading the way for the past 8 years in all things pie related! At a first glance of their menu, the choices are almost too hard to make (you will probably note to yourself, as we did, a return trip is in order to sample them all!). We opted for the Wildshroom & Asparagus Pie, a great
alternative for those vegetarian pie lovers out there, the pie is filled with wild mushroom, asparagus, shallots, white wine and cracked black pepper. One of the best things about this pie was the rich creamy centre and its contrast with the crisp pastry outside, (no soggy bottoms around here!) this was suitably filling and great value for money. We also chose a pie with a classic beef filling. The Moo Pie, which is filled with British beef steak, real ale, fresh herbs and a rich gravy. We had this with a side of mash and peas, and of course an extra serving of gravy! Next time you are in Oxford, it is definitely worth checking this place out, and the best thing is, you can buy pies instore to take home and enjoy... Bliss!
FIRE & STONE George Street, Oxford,
Who doesn't love pizza? To be honest, here at DV8 it is one of our favourite staples! However, do you sometimes get bored of the same old toppings? Are you looking for something new?..
Well look no further, Fire & Stone on George Street will take you on an around-the-world adventure, with toppings inspired from every content around the globe! Some of the toppings may sound a little bizarre at first, for example who would have thought curry inspired food as a pizza topping would work? Or who would ever have imagined putting roast potatoes on a pizza? As strange as some of these combinations sound they really do work! We decided to broaden our tastes a little by experimenting with some of the more adventurous toppings. First up we tried the Koh Sumui, this is a vegetarian pizza topped with Thai yellow coconut sauce, roast sweet potato, mozzarella, red chilli,

mange-tout and baby sweetcorn (like we said we were trying to be adventurous!) This was actually really delicious and really filling, the unusual combination came together nicely to provide a taste explosion in the mouth. Second up, we wanted a more meat inspired option so we opted for the Texas! Topped with delicious BBQ sauce, mozzarella and that all important barbequed rump steak, with a welcome addition of onions, mushrooms and tomato salsa, this turned out to be the pizza that dreams are made of. Again the pizza was really filling and great value for money.
The bar offers a range of cocktails, wines and beers (and of course soft drinks) as well as an extensive selection of starters and desserts. To be honest we just opted for the pizza, however on our next visit we would happily go the whole hog.

HAIR
and wrapping around the base of the tail to conceal the hair band.
The low slung side bun is chic and quick to style. Virtually no styling products are needed as it requires a “freshly washed” look for added texture and volume. Simply wash and rough dry the hair using a hair dryer then sculpt the hair towards the side of the neck. Loosely roll the ends up and pin in for hold. Remember, this look is not about neatness, if a few strands fall, the better it will look! Tease a few strands at the front to frame and soften the face.
Well Christmas is finally here, and you may be in need of a few tips on getting styling your hair and getting a great party look This month, Matrix Artistic Director Anne Veck is here to give you some help Anne Veck, Oxford branch, is proud to announce two new stylists; Ricardo and Emmanuel. These young, style conscious guys are obsessed with all things hair and are here in time to preen and sculpt your everyday style to party perfection! Here, they give you lucky readers a sneak preview to what up-do’s you should be rocking to stand out from the crowd this festive season:
The easiest up-do ever is the ponytail! The ponytail is glamorous and sexy and the higher it is, the bigger the swish! For the perfect party pony, make sure the hair is sleek and frizz free. Whilst the hair is damp, use a small amount of leave-in conditioner then blow dry through. For impeccable hold and brilliant shine for a luxuriant lacquered effect, emulsify a small amount of high shine gel between the palms, smooth over the roots then brush the hair up in a secure ponytail using snag free elastic hair bands up to the crown of the head. The pony has got to look ultra-groomed so use a paddle brush. Upgrade the look by taking a section of your own hair from the pony
Plaits are still very popular but make it relevant for the new season with a new way to style it. Cornrow a thick braid all the way around the head for an ethereal winter goddess look. It looks hard but is, in actual fact, quite easy to do and hides day old hair! Still reluctant to learn how to braid? Cheat by buying a braided headband.
Can’t do it yourself? Simply book an appointment with either Ricardo, Emmanuel or any one of Anne Veck’s hair up experts who’ll get your hair red carpet worthy in no time. Also, if you’re stumped for what to buy your loved one, Anne Veck is offering £20 vouchers for the price of £10 (must be redeemed in January). Great affordable, party hair- Anne Veck Hair’s Christmas present to DV8 readers!

Half up half down is a classic Brigitte Bardot style – and so classically sex kitten that it’ll glam up any party outfit. The fuller the hair, the more impact this look has, so start off by prepping locks with a volumising mousse and blast with a hairdryer at the roots to activate some serious pump. Curl hair with irons and then brush out for soft waves. Separate out a circular section around the top of your head and start to backcomb sections to build up height. Once you’ve got an impressive bump, softly brush the very top layer, smoothing it over your hair at the back. Work the bouffon into the desired roundness and height, secure with pins and then finish with a strong hold spray like OSiS+ Freeze, £9.25, from Schwarzkopf Professional.
Blunt cuts are so on trend this season especially with a strong fringe and darker hair shades which will give loads of impact. Black clothes were big on the catwalks, but if you’re not a fan, then let your hair wear it instead. It’s about translating the glossy satins and leather fabrics into something classier, and wearing your hair as the ultimate fashion accessory. So go for a commanding colour – either a smouldering red or more of an espresso. A semi-permanent is the best option as it gives you the chance to experiment with a more sumptuous colour with the option of always going back to your natural tone if you’re not too keen. Mirror the boldness of the cut out dresses, and statement handbags too for AW 11 by trying sleek high ponytails, uber glam curls or why not even go for a big bridal-inspired updo – either a high cluster of buns or French plait with a high shine finish. The only thing to remember is the key word, ‘statement’

Shaped like a powderpuff, add some elegance and glamour with a big, bold and beautiful bird’s nest bun! It’s oversized, statement and perfect for showing off dresses with detailing around the shoulders. Add a blowdrying volumising product like Schwarzkopf OSiS+ Body Me, £11.60, for oomph and then pull hair up into a very high ponytail. Divide the ponytail into sections and go mad on getting loads of texture through backcombing and messing the lengths up and then gently wrap hair around the ponytail in layers to build up the big shape. Keep it there with bobby pins and a strong hold hairspray and for that extra bit of festive sparkle, finish the look with an embellished headband placed around the base. If you have short hair then just jazz it up for dramatic height.
À la new fetish trend coming out this season, an amazingly easy Christmas party style is the clean, chic ponytail...with attitude. Cover the top, sides and underside of your hair with a light hold gel and then, using a boar bristle brush, smooth it all up into a high position at the crown of your head and secure. Brush over again to flatten any bumps and finish with some strong hold hairspray to catch any flyaways. For a more provocative touch take a section of the ponytail and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to give extra height - don’t be afraid to work it quite high. Smooth serum into the ponytail to minimise any frizz and then finally blitz all over with a shine spray to add some gloss to make it a hairstyle to impress. For a slightly different take why not backcomb the ponytail into textured, messy waves to create some statement rock chick attitude!

What is your ultimate chat up line? I heard this one the other day, and it made me laugh... I might even try it out! “Excuse me, miss, do you give head to strangers? No. Well, then, allow me to introduce myself”.
If you spotted a lady on the dance floor, what moves would you use to impress her? Go straight over there, introduce myself and maybe offer to buy her a drink (or shot) Are you a shots man? It’s the best way to get the night started (and sometimes ended!)
