Welcome to the May issue of DV8 Oxford, normally around this issue we like to talk about how Spring is in full bloom and look ahead to Summer fun, except for, well…. Enough of the doom and gloom and high winds, let’s talk instead about what a fantastic issue of DV8 we have lined up for you. We are delighted to have launched the search for the next ‘Face of DV8’ competition. We have had lots of fantastic entries and we need your help to choose the winner! Head on over to our facebook page www.facebook.com/dv8oxfordmagazine where you can vote for who you think should be the cover star on a forthcoming issue of the magazine! This year, not only are we having a popular vote winner, but we will also be having a judge’s choice winner. We have teamed up with some of Oxford’s finest businesses including award winning hairdresser Anne Veck and boutique Booty Bea to make this years competition bigger and better than ever before. You can meet a couple of the entrants on page 10.
Oxford has been very busy over the last month, with several Bank Holidays brimming with fun filled events that have kept us entertained, to name check but a few we loved the first offering from Eat My Box Productions, with their castle mound show of Lord of the Flies. We were sad to sat goodbye to the Hobgoblin on the Cowley Road but excited to check out the Cowley Retreat which is now in its place. As ever we hope you enjoy this issue, and maybe a few of you have been snapped in our gallery pages. We hope you enjoy the rest of May DV8 Oxford Team x

ay saw the launch of the allnew Cowley Retreat on Cowley Road, formally known as the Hobgoblin. The Cowley Retreat is now one of the oldest pubs still standing in Oxford. The building has been refreshed both inside and out and boasts a beer garden with heated lamps ready for the British Summer! It looks set to be a great place to hang out and have a few beers. Why not check out the new look for yourselves and grab yourself a fine cask ale or a house wine (or two) in the process!
DIRTY BUNNY @ THE P.T. 08/04/2012
W
hen DV8 thinks of Easter, we conjure up images of bunnies, in particular Easter bunnies (and sometimes playboy bunnies, but that is another story!). This Easter, The Purple Turtle, had it's own spin on the rabbit theme, with a night entitled, Dirty Bunny, this grabbed our attention so we went to check it out. From the offset we knew it was going to be popular, as one of our favourite Oxford promoters Tom Plested was the mastermind behind the evening, but we never expected it to be quite this popular, the queue was epic (fortunately we managed to jump our way to the front!) Once inside we navigated the tunnels and rooms which were pumping out a fantastic array of tunes and anthems from the 80's through to the present day. The second thing to get our attention was that we had heard rumours there was an offer of 6 Jägerbombs for £8!! And this was indeed true, we had stumbled upon a crazy Jäger party... Love it! If you missed this bank holiday party, make sure you look our for the next one coming soon! DV8 OXFORD /// MAY/JUNE 2012

KIRSTY The face of DV8 Oxford brought to you by: Norbert Pietraszek www.pietraszek.co.uk Anne Veck www.anneveckhair.com Booty Bea www.bootybea.com
Name: Kirsty Beer Age: 21 Height: 5始9 Occupation: Presenter and dance teacher. What始s your favourite thing about Oxford? The people! I have amazing friends here. But also the massive variety of beautiful buildings and quirky places. (I'm also a big Oxford United fan!) Anything bad about Oxford? We need a better selection of shops! Where do you like going in Oxford? Thirst has got to be my favourite place for either a chilled night or a dance with the girls. I also love the Living Room, the food is great. Have you got any previous modelling experience? I did a number of shoots as Miss Oxford last year, I've also done bridal shoots, modelled for make up companies and was a model at Fashion Rocks Live last year. What would it mean to you to be picked as the face of DV8 Oxford? I think it has a great mix of what Oxford is about, so to be the face would be a massive privilege.

Page 11
Name: Reuben Beau Davies Age: 20 Height: 5始10 Occupation: Actor/ Musician/ Barman. What始s your favourite thing about Oxford? The parks, and atmosphere, the whole place is so beautiful and calm. I'm also a big fan of the hubbly bubbly bar, and Shake-aways!! Anything bad about Oxford? Not Oxford itself, but the fact a lot of my friends have moved away now. It used to be cool, when I could come into town any day of the week, and bump into at least one person I knew. Where do you like going in Oxford? Unicorn (The best charity shop around), I love the woman to bits. I haven't been there for a while though. What would it mean to you to be picked as the face of DV8 Oxford? It would be amazing! It would be such a good opportunity to get my face out there and noticed. I would like to take modelling a bit more seriously, and if I got the chance to be the face of DV8 Oxford, I think that would be a great start to a portfolio!
Name: Isobel Louise Witts (Izzy) Age: 20 Height: 5'8 Occupation: I'm currently doing a Biological Sciences degree at Oxford Brookes and I also work part time at Republic although you're more likely to catch me rocking out every weekend behind the bar at Wahoo! What始s your favourite thing about Oxford? My favourite thing about Oxford is just the place, it's so similar to my hometown, Winchester but so different at the same time. Anything bad about Oxford? Sadly a small minority of the students! Just the attitudes and rudeness of some people is really giving you guys a bad reputation. Where do you like going in Oxford? When I actually have time to myself, I love walking through Christchurch Meadows (obviously when the weather's nice!) and exploring all the little side streets of Oxford, there are some amazing independant shops and cafes to find if you know where to look!
MADELEINE
IZZY
Name: Madeleine Hill Age: 24 Height: 5'3 Occupation: PA What始s your favourite thing about Oxford? My favourite thing about Oxford is probably the restaurants. My boyfriend and I love to eat out and have been working our way around the city! Anything bad about Oxford? I'd like to see the empty shop units in the city centre being put to use with pop-up art exhibitions & music nights to promote and support Oxfords budding creative scene, not more tourist souvenir shops! Where do you like going in Oxford? I grew up in Oxford so I've been here there and everywhere!! I always makes sure I've seen OVADA and The Modern Art Oxfords latest exhibitions. Oxfork put on some great event nights and if i'm meeting friends or clients from outside Oxford I'll often suggest The Jam Factory. What would it mean to you to be picked as the face of DV8 Oxford? I was a student once so this isn't a dig!! but sometimes the emphasis on the identity of young people in Oxford, is that we're all students! But we're not! There are a lot of young professionals in Oxford doing exciting things like contemporary art exhibitions, pop up restaurants & gigs [to name but a few] that aren't connected to the institutions. If somehow I made it as a face of DV8 Oxford, I would take it as an opportunity to promote and support these talented young people.

And what a second year it has been! There has been too many great events to mention but a few, we loved the fantastic fancy dress parties, jager inspired evenings, and foam parties. Wahoo has always managed to offer us something new, different and fun! The second year celebrations where no exception, with a big crowd turning out to help celebrate. There was champagne flowing to toast the landmark birthday, and in true Wahoo style lots of dancing to be done and shots to be downed.
The first two years at Wahoo have proved to be great fun, we are hoping there are many more to come and we are especially looking forward to seeing what is planned over the next 12 months.

April was a month of brilliant Birthday celebrations, which included Lola Lo, Wahoo, and DV8’s one and only Publisher! Lola was the baby of the bunch; it was hard to believe that it was only a year ago the DV8 team helped welcome Lola Lo to Oxford at their fantastic launch party. Now the pressure was on Lola to provide a bigger and better (if possible) party to mark her first anniversary in Oxford. We think you will agree with us, that in it's sophomore year Lola Lo has become a firm favourite on the Oxford party scene (we are a particular fan of their Thursday night offering Beware the Kraken). To celebrate, Lola pulled out all the stops, and laid on a circus theme for the evening...Welcome to Cirque du Lola! We love the circus, and every form that it comes in, from the traditional travelling circus through to the glitz and glamour of Vegas’ Cirque du Soleil! The Tiki paradise was transformed into a Parisian circus, with glitz glamour, fire and ice and not to mention our favourite thing from the evening... Candy floss and popcorn! It was like all our best memories from childhood, mixed together with all things cool from adulthood, we are mainly talking about jagerbombs here! Why was a trip to the circus never like this!

e know how long some of you like to take getting ready before hitting the town and on the whole, we try to remain presentable until the end (who knows what could end up on Facebook!) Sometimes, an event comes along when the idea of looking hot goes out the window. The Junction held a gunge party giving us the opportunity to live our childhood dreams of being on Fun House! For those of you who missed it, think foam party but with actual gunge. Awesome!

MONSTER MUNCH RAVE @ WAHOO
SHENANIGANS
T
he Easter holiday brings a lot of chocolate related goodness, how many of you out there ate too much chocolate by breakfast? We were definitely in the need of something savoury by the evening, so we headed over to Wahoo who provided an unusual way of combining snacking and partying! We have all been to foam parties and paint parties, however, Wahoo's twist on this was to have a Monster Munch party! That's rights, an actual cannon spraying out hundreds of pieces of Monster Munch, of all different flavours projected into the crowd, we had never experienced anything quite like it!
Monster Munch are awesome, and it got us thinking back to our younger years, talking about which flavour was our favourite and the adverts with the monsters on… They just don’t make them like they used to!
If Monster Munch weren’t your thing, then the downstairs of Wahoo was a snack free area, with DJ Ollie East on the turntables playing everyone’s favourite tunes. The club was open ‘til 4, meaning we safely burnt off some of the calories we packed on earlier in the day! This was a great and inventive way to spend Easter Sunday, with the next Bank Holiday just around the corner, we wonder what Wahoo has in store?…

his month DV8 turned culture vultures when we went to the launch of Eat My Box Productions first theatre performance of Lord of the Flies. For those of you that slept through GCSE English Lord of the Flies is a novel by author William Golding about a group of school boys marooned on a desert island who try to rule themselves, with disastrous results. It is a fascinating exploration of human nature which Eat My Box played out with great spirit, vigor and an impressive use of movement and space.

MOVIE PREVIEW: PIRANHA 3DD
Piranha 3D was one of those films that was an absolute surprise, it was the right mix of horror, comedy, gore, with excellent use of 3D visuals, do you remember the scene with Kelly Brook and the porn start (whose name we forget) swimming in the sea. It definitely confirmed what 3D video was invented for!
After the terror unleashed on Lake Victoria in the previous installment Piranha 3D, the pre-historic school of bloodthirsty piranhas are back! This time, no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of summer's best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park. Christopher Lloyd ("Back to the Future") reprises his role as the eccentric piranha expert with survivor Paul Scheer ("The League") and a partially devoured Ving Rhames ("Pulp Fiction") back for more fish frenzy. David Hasselhoff trades in the sandy beaches of "Baywatch" to be a celebrity lifeguard at the racy water park. Prepare for double the terror, double the action and double the D's in this sequel also starring Gary Busey ("Lethal Weapon"), Katrina Bowden ("30 Rock"), Danielle Panabaker ("The Crazies"), Matt Bush ("Adventureland"), Chris Zylka ("The Amazing Spider-Man") and David Koechner ("Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"). Piranha 3DD is set for UK cinema release on 1st June 2012 and if you can’t wait that long, then check out the trailer on the official Piranha website: www.piranha-3dd.com

BARTENDER OF THE MONTH
DV
Meet delightful bartender Jessica, who you can find in Oxford’s newest bar, The Cowley Retreat. How long have you been a bar tender? Three months, I worked at The Hobgoblin before it became The Cowley Retreat.
Can you do any tricks? I’ve just learnt to do the flaming orange twist garnish on a Cosmo, it really brings out the citrus flavours. I can also free pour perfect shots. What is your signature drink? I really like making Cosmos, I also like doing a full line of jäger bombs, balancing the shots on top of the glasses and knocking them into the glasses! How many cocktails do you offer? We will be offering 16 in total.
What is your favourite thing about working in The Cowley Retreat? Chatting to all the different people you meet. It's work but sociable too. When your not working which is your favourite pub/bar/club? Usually The Bridge or Thirst, standard!
Best thing about Oxford nightlife? You get to see a lot of familiar faces, which is nice and there is always a different night to go to!
COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH MARGARITA
Juice of freshly squeezed lemons and limes Tequila
Cointreau
Salt to garnish This has to be one of our favourite drinks of all time, it’s a classic and we love it! With so many fantastic places to get a cocktail in Oxford, this has to be one of the best Margarita’s on offer!

One for the ladies? The Cosmoplitan (Cosmo to it’s friends) was popularised by the hit TV show Sex in the City, with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda often seen looking fabulous and discussing sex, men and life over a cosmo or two!

DV8 CATCHES UP WITH OXFORD TATTOO TO DISCUSS LASER TATTOO REMOVAL....
TATTOO | LASER TATTOO REMOVAL | PIERCING | BODY JEWELLERY
Laser Tattoo Removal has established itself as the preferred method of tattoo removal or reduction among professionals in this industry. The technology is well proven and has shown itself to be by far the best method for the removal of tattoos. Our tattoo removal laser, the Sapphire 2 from ADL is an industry standard laser, continuing to provide the best and most reliable results. The Sapphire 2 is a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser and is fully CE regulation compliant. People have many reasons for wanting to reduce or remove tattoos. The most common are changes in circumstances. Whether your tattoo is a reminder of a relationship, an act of youthful rebellion or you just want to fade away an old tattoo to have something new; we have the laser tattoo removal options that you need. So, how does it work, what does the treatment involve

to an elastic band being snapped against the area. It’s uncomfortable but easily managed by most people. The process is very quick and we can break at any time. We have clients removing facial tattoos or from other sensitive areas; even these can easily be tolerated. Another concern is about scarring. With all medical procedures involving the skin there is a chance of scarring, however it is incredibly unlikely using our industry standard laser technology and utilizing the many years of experience we have that any scarring will occur. There are a number of factors that influence the number of treatments necessary to remove a tattoo includeing the tattoo age, the type of ink, the amount of ink, the depth and the colours used. The most important factor is the laser technology being used. There are many

cheap imported or old lasers out there, these can not provide the same results and have many risks associated with their use. There is no need to take these risks. We are thoroughly trained, have the industry standard technology and can provide the service very affordably. There are other ways that a tattoo can be removed. Over the years we have seen many clients who have attempted to have their tattoos removed using a chemical tattoo removal treatment. These treatments involve a variety of chemicals being tattooed into the inked area. These treatments inevitably produce significant scar tissue which can be worse and more unsightly than the original tattoo. Laser Tattoo Removal is the only real option to be considered. A consultation will inform you in detail about cost, which starts at £30 per treatment, the process and anything else you want to know. Consultations are free; Oxford Tattoo | 100 St Aldates | Oxford | OX1 1BT come | 01865 791893 | with oxfordtattoo@gmail.com and have a chat us. and what are the results? The laser is aimed at the inked area and when fired causes a reaction in the ink which explodes the ink particles into microscopic pieces which your natural immune defence washes away, causing the tattoo to simply fade away over a number of visits. Some brighter colours don’t absorb the energy as well and take a little longer to break down, but in the majority of cases there is no trace of a tattoo after 5-15 sessions. Amateur or home made tattoos tend to use weak inks and sit close under the top layer of skin, so are very easy to treat. Professional tattoos use very permanent inks and tend to be deep in the skin. Some tattoos can be very difficult to remove but with patience and persistence the majority of customers can experience complete removal. Does it hurt? All clients have different tolerance levels when it comes to pain. Many clients compare the feeling
