Welcome to the March edition of DV8 Oxford. February turned out to be a pretty awesome month, with Oxford going burlesque crazy! We here at DV8 always enjoy the opportunity to pay homage to possibly one of the best entertainment forms ever invented! Check out pages 10 and 14 for our reviews. So how is March shaping up? Well first up, it's the biggest fashion event on the Oxford calendar, Oxford Fashion Week. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever before. We have booked our front row tickets to the fantastic runway shows and will be bringing you all the best bits, including the hottest looks in a review of the week in next months issue. One of the great things about March is that the clocks go forward (ok, so the downside is that you loose an hours sleep), but the upside is that we are officially in British Summer Time! We are very ready to cast off our snuggie blankets, (if you don’t have one yet, where have you been?) and break out the spring/summer party wardrobe. The most exciting thing in March has to be our very own 'Face of DV8' Competition, which gives one lucky reader the chance to be our May cover star. Over the last few weeks we have received lots of fantastic entries, and now it is time to start voting for your favourites. The 5 finalists will be selected in a facebook vote, so find us at www.facebook.com/DV8OxfordMagazine and get 'liking'! We hope you have a good time in March and we look forward to seeing some of you out and about around Oxford. Remember to look out for the DV8 photographers, if your lucky you might get papped for the next issue! See you in April! The DV8 Team x

T
he Vaudeville Rave came to Oxford town on Saturday 5th February in celebration of their 2nd Birthday; a non-Valentine's day special event called LUST! What is a Vaudeville Rave I hear you cry? Well DV8 went along en-masse to check it out and we tell you what – we weren’t disappointed!! A Vaudeville Rave mixes the footstomping sounds of the early 1900s music halls, the 1920s speakeasies, big bandswing clubs & jive dance halls and smashes it into now! Mixed with Edwardian fetishistic & obscure acts and everyone’s favorite; a bit of burlesque – this is something you have never experienced before and will want to time and time again!!!
The hosting venue, Oxford's Regal went all out with an absinthe reception on arrival and then we were all transported back to 1880s London with the re-creation of a debauched Soho backalley! There were plenty of stalls selling fortunes to moonshine, a four-poster at Madam JoJos (DV8 passed the time lounging in here with some ‘ladies of the night’!) and & blackjack table in the gambling den – there was even a snake charmer working the crowds! And then there were the acts! These included; saucy redheads and sultry brunettes stripping off to vintage tunes, a guy straight out of a ‘diet coke’ ad performing on a Chinese pole, a homoerotic 2-man acrobatic act, spectacular & sexy magic tricks and a dominatrix Fire Tango - all directed by the fabulous Marquis de Gray. And he lived up to his flamboyant reputation off-stage as well; when DV8 encountered him in Madame JoJos, his business card had a martini recipe on the back - how very

dapper! The outfits were one of the main highlights for DV8 and provided plenty of photo opportunities with corsets and waistcoats, top hats and feather boas, garters and dickey bows and an abundance of stockings & frilly knickers! Some of the more elaborate outfits even involved steam punk & silk whips and stilt-walkers & strongmen!
The music was also a show-stealer with the finest that the swing n bass and electro swing genres have to offer. Music acts included; Top Shelf Jazz (filthy Swing) Dutty Moonshine (regulars on the UK festival circuit!) and Savage Henry & Mr Horsefeathers (both electro swing). The punters went wild with the opportunity to show off their dance skills and there were plenty of mini dance-offs going on throughout the night. DV8 was particularly impressed with the vintage moves being thrown around the room; everything from the Charleston to Lindy Hop! So if you are looking for a night of extravagant debauchery where anything can happen – then the Vaudeville Rave is right up your ‘Soho’ street! But get your tickets in advance as the Regal (even with an approx 2000 capacity) had to turn many disappointed dandies & fillies away on the night! Keep an eye on DV8’s Facebook page for the next one – we’ll see you there!

opular Oxford nightlife venue Wahoo went back in time to the Rock’n’Roll heydays of the 1950s to celebrate Valentine’s Day - with its very own Jive Weekend! And your favourite Oxford mag DV8 was there to soak up the old skool atmosphere. Wahoo was swinging all through the weekend with an authentic chequered dance floor and vintage swing, jive & funk tunes, plus some contemporary music to strut your stuff to - from a mixture of live bands and Oxford’s top DJs! On Thursday night there was live funk music from Mean Poppa Lean, a 6-piece band from Brighton; whom have played nearly every UK festival and have extensively toured the UK, Europe and beyond! The rest of the weekend was covered by DJs Zappa and Andy P who infused their regular Saturday night sets with BIG swing and Jive numbers - a classic mixture of the old and new.
When Wahoo advertised the Friday night as ‘Its 1954, Rock Around The Clock has just been released and the kid’s are going mental, staying out late and heading to make out point’– they weren’t wrong, it was like the whole of Oxford University had been let out for summer! And DV8 spotted plenty of young puppy love; we might have even played ‘cupid’ ourselves on a few occasions! Other retro delights included Wahoo’s very own Ice Cream Diner where Mario (the 2x Oxford Flair champion!) put together a menu of hip icecream based cocktails; all served with a dazzling display of his flaring skills! And finally the weekend ended on a romantic note, as it should; harking back to the days of old fashioned courting with a ‘Slow Dating Night’ on Monday. DV8 can’t wait for the next themed weekend – watch this space!

A
fun, frivolous and flirty night was presented by Kittie Klaw and Elle Amour from the Ministry of Burlesque who came to entertain us as a special treat on Valentines weekend at Kukui! What a great way to party with (or without) a Valentines Day date… There was fabulous music, fine atmosphere and a few surprises along the way! DV8 think this was enough excitement to last us for the whole of February… with entry only £3 before 11pm, a real bargain for such a visual treat! The sexy, sassy looking girls surprised us at intervals throughout the night. A deep red hazy glow spotlight on the dancefloor gave a suitably sexy and atmospheric backdrop to each act as the ladies appeared from the shadows to perform their sexy stripteases!
The first performance kept to the traditional style burlesque routine, like something out of Moulin Rouge the dancer elegantly whirled and moved as if at a ballet in the West End (well, almost!). The next diva came out in her leather cape and it seemed like everyone knew this would be slightly different, she had a naughty look in her eye as she seductively moved and enticed the audience in her presence. DV8 were surprised to see two spiders covering her modesty at the end of the dance! But it was the starlet at the end who had a kitsch edge to her performance that really caught our attention, as she cutely danced and moved to the cheers of the crowd and seductively ate a cupcake! We’re not sure we could pull that off so well – but what a great night had by all!

ONE DIRECTION @ THE REGAL
O
n a wet Wednesday evening in February DV8 joined hoards of fans queuing up outside the Regal, all waiting to see X Factor finalists One Direction. It was a sea of flashing sunglasses, bunny ears and banners and the screaming was like nothing else! Once inside, the Regal was filled with over 1000 eager fans and a lot of high-pitched noise, it was like a junior version of Westlife at Wembley! There were many support acts to help build up the anticipation of the crowd with the host shouting ‘One Direction will be on soon’ every five minutes, all we could hear were chants of ‘Harry Harry Harry’…poor Liam, Louis and Niall… and lets not forget the one that does all the solo warbling moments Zayn! DV8’s favourite local support act were the boys from ‘Out of the Blue’ an a-cappella group that put a fresh twist on modern tunes from Take That to Lady Gaga! When One Direction finally came on the crowd went absolutely wild, we are sure we saw a couple of people faint with excitement, it looked like a couple of the band members might have at any point too!
The set was an eclectic mix of their favourite tunes from their X Factor experience, they performed a beautiful ‘Chasing Cars’ which I’m sure set off a few tears, and an amazing cover of ‘Torn’ which deservedly got them to the X Factor final back in 2010. DV8’s favourite has got to be the boys version of ‘Only Boy in the World’… A genius reinvention of the recent Rihanna classic, it better be on the album boys! The crowd managed to stop screaming long enough to sing Harry a ‘Happy Birthday’ which he looked pretty proud of. A fab effort from One Direction, who we are keeping our eyes on for 2011.

odka Love is a new night that has been hitting towns like Reading, Kingston and Coventry, we were excited to hear that the night also found a home at Oxfords very own No.9 Club. DV8 went along to the very exciting launch night, we arrived to an already busy club, with 3 floors offering musical tastes for everyone spinning everything from R’n’B, House and Club Classics.
We were pleased to see the exclusive third floor VIP lounge was open, which of course we were in, spending time in the Moroccan themed booths! No.9 could well become your new favourite club in Oxford. The launch night offered prizes to be won, including the infamous Vodka Love tees and hoodies, and attracted some of the hottest party goers in town! Drinks were flowing (although we may have had one Jagerbomb too many) and dancing was a plenty. DV8 can happily say this is the place to be on a Friday night! We also hear that celebrity appearances and guest DJ's are being lined up starting with Leo from The Streets. With all these great nights to look forward to, No.9 is shaping up to be the place to party in 2011.
Further information about Vodka Love can be found on their Facebook page or their soon to launch website: www.VodkaLoveUK.com Be sure to log on soon to see what is coming up in the near future.

CAT MATADOR EP LAUNCH @ CELLAR
I
t’s not often a band perform using two microphones (unintentionally in this case), but that’s exactly what Cat Matador did when they hosted their ’The Address’ EP launch and kicked off their tour with a performance at The Cellar. Coming on like a more polished Mogwai with a touch of Bloc Party, they used their quiet/loud style to good effect in The Cellar’s intimate surroundings.
Earlier, We Aeronauts had entertained the appreciative crowd with their blend of pulsing melodic guitars, duelling male and female vocalists with a hint of Americana thrown in for good measure. They even made good use of an accordion to add depth to their sound, creating some good energy and left the stage having set the launch event up nicely. Cat Matador acknowledged the efforts of their fellow bands as they walked on stage and immediately launched into their first song. All seemed serene as the subtle melody skittered along, slowly growing louder until, with a sudden jolt, it burst into life before ending abruptly leaving you wanting more.
By the time they played the ‘The Address’ the energy levels had risen and the use of a fiddle player to complement the songs seemed increasingly to be a wise move. The song’s angular guitar riff and impassioned lyrics found support in the crowd, and by the time an encore was offered, there was chanting and cheering. Overall the evening was a success with DV8 certainly enjoying themselves, and it will be interesting to see how the bands develop as the tour works its way round the country. SOPHIE B.
When I’m not frantically scribbling this column, I present the breakfast show on Oxfordshire radio station Glide FM. This week, we’ve revealed our next big project: a huge social experiment which we’re calling 2 Strangers & A Wedding.
We’re asking: “Is Love Really Blind?” We want to see if it’s possible to match a bloke and a girl, let them get to know each other and take them on dates, with the end result being that they fall in love and go up the aisle together… WITHOUT ever having seen each other. There have been mixed reactions, a lot of people (admittedly mostly female so far) love the romanticism of the idea and the fact that it’s more about what you have on the inside that the outside. Some people think it’s an insult to the sanctity of marriage, others that it’s a tasteless stunt or a competition (it’s neither). We’ve even had prospective brides in touch already, there’s a real feeling of ‘why not give it a go?!’ Let’s face it, if it does work (and it’s been attempted many times before across the world with some success), wouldn’t that be the most incredible story to tell your grandchildren?
I’m all for it myself and I’m not just saying that because I work for Glide. I’m getting married myself this summer and am getting so excited about the big day as it gets closer – I honestly can’t wait to stand up in front of all our friends and family and make our vows (which we’re writing ourselves.)
I’d love to hear what you think about it – we have a dedicated website (www.2strangers.co.uk) where you can find out more, give us your feedback, or even apply to be the bride or groom yourself. All we ask is that you’re single, over 18 and a resident of Oxfordshire. What have you got to lose? You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9

PIZZA EXPRESS 8 Cornmarket Street, Oxford, 01865 723400
Italian restaurants come in all shapes and sizes but none are as popular on the British High Street as Pizza Express. Here in Oxford we have two restaurants to choose from, one in the Castle Complex and the other on the edge of the Covered Market, just off Cornmarket Street. We were in the mood for some pizza, so we decided to see what Cornmarket Street had to offer. This Pizza Express is located in a lovely restored 15th century building, once you’ve negotiated your way up the spiral staircase you find a light and airy restaurant which is always filled with the banter of conversation. One of our favourite things about Pizza Express is their trademark doughball starters, which are simply doughballs with a garlic butter side, no Pizza Express trip in complete without some of these which never fail to hit the spot. Pizza Express offers more than 20 pizzas on its extensive menu, which also includes a range of pasta dishes and
salads. Pizzas come with the choice of either the Classic or Romana (thinner, crispier) base. We chose the Etna, on the Romana base topped with Hot soft sausage, roquito peppers, speck ham and grana padano. This was delicious and was washed down with a glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo – A classic Italian red (served by the bottle or the glass).
We also ordered a Leggera Pizza, which is an ingenious offering from Pizza Express, it is a lighter option pizza where the middle is taken out and substituted for a salad (this is a great option for people still on their new years diet as pizza from this menu contains only about 500 calories), we chose the Gustosa, which is topped with Prosciutto cotto ham, light mozzarella, portobello mushrooms, yellow peppers, thyme and a glass of Sicilian Still Lemonade. This was delicious although we wonder, could they invent a pizza with the delicious gooey middle but no crust? We might suggest it.
COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH Angels, Little Clarendon Steet, Oxford 01865 554224 FRECKLED LADY
Belverdere Black Raspberry Vodka Pashion Fruit Puree Squeezed Lime Juice Gomme Sugar Syrup Ginger Beer Creme de Mure Served in a tall glass over crushed ice
This is the creation of Angel’s bartender Simon (A seasoned bar tender on the Oxford bartending scene). It takes from fantastic spirits from France and Poland and mixes them together in this little fruity number. As this is a special creation, next time you are passing Angel’s drop by and ask for Simon, this really won’t disappoint!! DV8 OXFORD /// March 2011
LUISIANA JAM

BAR TENDER OF THE MONTH
Served over crushed ice in a jam jar.
This cocktail is currently the feature cocktail of the month at Angels Cocktail bar on Little Clarendon Street. We love the fact that it is served in a cool little jam jar. Aside from the aesthetics, this is one refreshing cocktail, we could drink them all night!!! The cocktail is a perfect balance between the sweetness of the fruit and the sharpness of the alcohol. Be sure to check this one out!!

CULINARY DELIGHTS
MAXWELL’S 36 Queen Street, Oxford 01865 242192
Maxwell’s is a real Oxford institution, the DV8 team have definitely celebrated many an occasion there over the years. This month we went along to sample the food that Maxwell’s Bar & Grill has to offer. For those of you who have so far managed to miss the Maxwell’s trick it is a relaxed, American style bar and diner located above Queen Street (look for the door next to Paperchase). The restaurant has booths, tables, and a long bar area which serves delicious cocktails. The décor is simple and unpretentious, with cool retro-chic wall murals and wooden paneling. We were lucky enough to grab a table by the huge window, which gave us a great birds eye view of the street below, perfect for some people watching! We started with potato skins that were filled with cheese, onion and the optional extra of bacon accompanied by a sour cream dip. We also had the buffalo wings, which came coated in a spicy ‘wild piri
piri’ sauce, cooled down with a blue cheese dipping sauce. These were really tasty. The main menu was full of so many tempting choices, it was really hard to choose. After some deliberation we decided to go for a Chicken Caesar Salad, this arrived just how a main course salad should, a generous size with lots of topping!! Strips of tender chicken breast, large shavings of parmesan and medallions of garlic bread. We also went for the beef fajitas, after toying with the option of a mixture of both beef and chicken! The tender beef strips (cooked to your liking) came with tequila and lime infused peppers and onions. The sizzling fajitas were presented on an awesome stand with each component ready for you to build your creation. It of course came with some extra side dips including sour cream, salsa and the all important guacamole! We can’t recommend a dinner trip to Maxwell’s highly enough!
BARTENDER OF THE MONTH 29 Roppongi, George Street, Oxford 01865 241574 PAUL NISBETH BAR MANAGER ROPPONGI
How long have you worked at Roppongi? I have worked here since it opened in May 2010, and changed from Moods I have been working in bars for the last 18 years. Can you flair? Yes, I used to work in Old Orleans, although I’m not quite competition material I can do the basics! What is Roppongi’s signature drink? Tokyo Drift, its a fruity one that is really popular among the ladies. How many cocktails does Roppongi offer? We have about 15 on our main menu, however, as long as we have the ingredients we will mix it for you! What is your favourite thing about working at Roppongi? The people, the nightlife and the atmosphere, its a really fun place to work. Which are the best nights to come to Roppongi? I really like VIP Saturdays and Cheddar Thursdays, the best thing about Cheddar Thursday’s is the crowd of regulars. DV8 OXFORD /// March 2011

When 14-year-old Emma Kurtzman turned down the awkward, teenage advances of Adam Franklin outside of the Big Lodge at Camp Weehawken, neither one of them had any clue about real, adult sex. But quite the opposite is true when, years later, Emma (NATALIE PORTMAN) and Adam (ASHTON KUTCHER) cross paths—as they seem to have done randomly throughout their lives—and wind up in bed having sex. Really good sex.
And since Emma has a self-professed ‘peanut allergy to relationships,’ just as Adam has sworn them off—mostly because his once-famous television star dad (KEVIN KLINE) is now dating Adam’s most recent ex-girlfriend—the two decide to forego the accompanying emotional muddle of a relationship and just be friends with benefits. Hook up without hang-ups, boffing without bother, coitus without cost. No commitment, no lying, no jealousy, no clothed spooning, no emoticons, no shared breakfast, no “I miss you,” no body part nicknames, no mix tapes…in -short, “No Strings Attached.” What starts out as a perfect solution to physical need becomes a little more tricky—when Adam inadvertently brings his feelings to bed (and to the hospital closet, the back seat of the car and just about anywhere that provides horizontal support). Eventually, both wind up trying to untangle the strings they were trying to avoid altogether while struggling to answer one key question: can two friends have sex without love getting in the way? No Strings Attached is out now.....

Assuming girls with perfect hair just have good genes is a mistake: they almost certainly have heated or hired help. hair coloured, always have the colour done first. The Keratin Complex Express Blow Out treatment then locks in the colour ensuring it remains glossy and shiny for ages” The process begins a consultation with Anne Veck salon’s Keratin Complex Express Blow Out specialists who will give you all the information you need to decide if this service really is right for you and your hair. The keratin based formula is then worked through the hair, and blow dried into shape. Next your stylist will take small sections of the hair and heat seal the keratin deep into the hair shaft. When the treatment is over, you won’t believe how different your hair will feel. The texture will feel completely different. Smooth and frizz free and more importantly will save you time and energy every time you wash your hair for the next 6 weeks. Over the past 18 months the permanent blow dry treatment has become a ‘must have’ for A-listers and celebrities and it’s now available to all of us! To keep hair impeccably smooth in between appointments, use Moroccan Oil, £30 or Matrix Design Pulse Go Big £12.
