1. St Giles Fair: Experience all the fun of the fair, on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th of September. It’s time to embrace your inner child - get ready to stuff yourself with candyfloss, challenge friends at the coconut shy and scare yourself silly on the white knuckle rides. 2. The West End Comes to Oxford: The New Theatre formally known as the Oxford Apollo, will be showing some fantastic, award-winning West End shows such as Hairspray and Spamalot, get your tickets now before its too late... www.newtheatreoxford.org.uk 3. Return of the Student Population: It’s certainly been quiet without them around, so a big welcome back! 4. Glee FM becomes Glide FM: A radio station that plays songs from Glee 24/7! We didn’t want to believe it, but for 56hrs this re-launched station did exactly that, in one of the best radio stunts we’ve heard. Picked up by the likes of Perez Hilton this story made headlines across the world. We were just getting used to this crazy concept, when those in the know came clean and announced that the station would be officially launched as Glide FM, playing a mix of music, news and travel aimed at Oxford’s 20 something population (phew!), check out Glide FM @ 107.9 FM.
CASTLE OPEN AIR CINEMA
The Oxford Castle always offers a wide range of activities, from gigs to plays and not forgetting a little bit of ghost hunting on dark Halloween nights! This September the Oxford Castle is hosting 5 nights of open air cinema in the Castle gardens, showing a range of classic films that will make you feel all nostalgic, so you can snuggle up under the moonlight of an early autumn evening. The films and show times are as follows...
Earth From The Air: Soar through the skies over hundreds of countries with celebrated French journalist, reporter, environmentalist, and Earth From The Air photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Home is an extraordinary cinematic, aerial portrait of our planet as never seen before. The Sound of Music: Pick up a song sheet and sing-a-long with Julie Andrews to the much loved score to the Sound of Music - “Julie Andrews at her freshest and best…her singing is wonderful, the alps are wonderful, the songs are memorable, and the story line never gets boring.” – this film is one of a few of my favourite things! Grease: The original high school musical - it’s got groove, it’s got meaning! Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny fell in love over the summer. But when they unexpectedly discover they’re now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance? DV8 OXFORD /// SEPTEMBER 2010

EXPOSURE
House Bar tends to be a place visited by those in the know, until now, as DV8 is about to put the ‘secret’ out there! Just off the high street, located at the bottom of Wheatsheaf Yard, this cocktail bar offers sanctuary for those who want a little more sophistication for their money. Trying to escape the clutches of its older brother the well-established Duke of Cambridge, House Bar offers the same plush interiors but its high ceiling and lighting help create the perfect mood to a classic look. Unlike the Duke, House Bar offers an upstairs wood-paneled games room where you can watch any cricket or rugby that is showing or make use of the
G&D’S
G&D’s is an Oxford tradition of the best kind; this cow-themed café serves freshly made ice cream to die for, in many delicious flavours. One scoop or two, why not go monster (Three) and satisfy your ice cream craving, for less than £4.00 it’s the perfect excuse to stop mid-shop and take a break. With three locations in Oxford; Little Clarendon, St Aldates and Cowley Road, there’s no excuse not to visit! G&D’s ethos is reflected by its cheery, light, open décor where each establishment offers a range of smoothies, cakes, bagels and coffees to choose from - and they open 8pm till 12am every day! www.gdcafe.com DV8 OXFORD /// SEPTEMBER 2010

HEARD IT ON THE OXFORD GRAPE VINE... ‘American style’ pool table. There is nothing like sinking a few racks of pool whilst sipping martinis. The drinks list contains over forty cocktails including a great selection of beers. Make the most of happy hour, which includes weekends where most of the cocktails are half price. The outdoors seating area is a small patio, surrounded by heaters, dimly lit; the scene can create a lovely romantic atmosphere, which oozes class. As the weather gets warmer and the evenings get lighter it’s the perfect place to escape, sit, relax and enjoy a nice glass of red as you shake off the stresses of the day. Visit www.housebar.co.uk for more information.
Over the summer months DV8 HQ have been keeping our eyes and ears to the ground, making sure that we are the first to hear any rumours of refurbs and relaunches in Oxford. We here at DV8 love a re-launch party, with places like the Regal and Escape getting a make over, we hope to see you there. We also hear that a really funky Tiki bar may be headed to the city centre, you better watch this space. If you have any news and rumours that you think we should know about, then send us an email at: oxford@dv8online.co.uk
U.P. PALACE MAMMA MIA
The Ultimate Picture Palace on Jeune Street, just off Cowley Road, is the place to watch great films. It’s a cinema that offers its audience something different, where lovers of classic ‘art house’ fare and weird and wonderful ‘indie darlings’ gather. Don’t be fooled by the smaller cinematic offerings, the cinema does also screen mainstream movies, albeit several weeks after their original release. When inside DV8 felt it was like watching a movie at home. If you like to watch classic and contemporary films from all around the world then the Ultimate Picture Palace is the place for you! Tel: 01865 245 288.
Mamma Mia Pizzeria has added some Italian flavour to the Jericho area. If you’re looking for an exceptional pizza, then this is the place to be, perfect for an informal meal and especially good during warm Autumnal nights when you can eat outside. Offering delectable dishes ranging from succulent starters to mouth watering mains. Pizzas are prepared from scratch, right in front of your very eyes. For those with a sweet tooth check out their wide range of delicious deserts such as apple rustica and tiramisu. DV8 says keep up the good work Mamma! Tel: 01865 514 141.

DV8 LAUNCH PARTY @ THE LIVING ROOM
O
xford’s much anticipated lifestyle and listing magazine, DV8, celebrated its grand launch at the sexy, chic LIVING ROOM in Oxford. Featuring the finest sparkling champagne, beautiful people, delicious food and the most fantastic entertainment – it was certainly a debut not to be missed! The stunning venue provided the perfect setting, hosting a free flowing bar and providing delicious, beautifully presented sushi canapés. The night featured a performance by local band, Invisible Vegas, who played a truly blinding acoustic set, combining a number of their own songs with a selection of chilled out covers. Guests, including a cohort of the finest ‘movers and shakers’ from the Oxford entertainment scene, mingled among gorgeous models from Oxford fashion week and a collection of newly converted DV8 Oxford fans. With an incredible atmosphere, everyone partied into the summer night. Guests spilled out onto the patio area and sat browsing the first issue, checking to see if their photo had made the July edition! We are delighted with the positive reception that the first issue of the magazine has received and we’re really looking forward to DV8 Oxford’s future. Thanks to everyone who came down, raised a glass in support, and made it a night to remember! DV8 loves to plan a party, so don't worry the next event is just around the corner, we suggest you keep the 29th September free! Hope to see you there for another amazing night.

WAHOO MINI FESTIVAL
T
he bank holiday weekend was the perfect opportunity for many to enjoy some of the country's biggest and best music festivals, but for those of you that opted to stay in Oxford over the Bank Holiday weekend, Wahoo transformed into ‘Wahoonival’ a mini festival. There was a definite festival vibe with food stalls, fairground games, glow sticks, top bands, silent disco and even a fairy lit tent, complete with its very own cocktail bar! DV8 had great fun judging the Battle of the Bands competition, Saturday was a mixed bag of musical delights with the very talented soloist, Andy Skeleton, and the Green Day-eske, but certainly not wannabes, Dirt Royal – these guys have real star potential! Sunday night saw another array of musical genres with crowd pleasing Terra 45, eclectic Shattered Dreams and the groovy, gorgeous Dalis High. Shattered Dreams went on to win Heat 2 and battled it out with Dirt Royal in an explosive finale! Dirt Royal’s charismatic frontman, along with the other band members, took their performance to a new level, winning the entire competition, utterly deserving their £500 prize. Festivities carried on throughout the night and Wahoonival ended on a high with a fabulous UV rave. The bands were happy to let their hair down after all the tension and excitement. DV8 can’t wait for the next Wahoonival!

resh and Funky DJ team, Disco Mutante recently put on another fun and fabulous night of all things Disco at Baby Simple... A perfect way to spend a summer night on Oxford’s Cowley Road! Disco Mutante is a new gay-friendly night at the relaxed, cool, Baby Simple. Playing Disco music across the full spectrum, from Italo to Philly Soul and Cosmic Funk to Bamboo Boogie. DV8 were there soaking up the atmosphere and funky dance tunes from 9pm till late. Our personal highlight was Will Nightingale who has been on the Oxford party scene for many years, his classic set of Funk, Boogie and Disco definitely got the party started! Another favourite was Sam Tierney, who can often be found playing with the legendary Disco Shed at festivals like the Big Chill. So with free entry and disco tunes till 4am what more do you need? If this sounds like your thing rhen don’t miss the next night, check out Disco Mutante on Facebook to keep up-dated with the latest events.

ALCOPOP! ICE CREAM SESSIONS @ G&D
I
magine eating deliciously crazy flavoured ice cream like, Double Decker, pistachio and even gin and tonic sorbet on a Thursday night whilst listening to some awesome local bands and chilling out with your mates… It sounded like an unusual but ideal combination to us! Alcopop! Records, an Oxford based independent indie label presented three of their popular signings stripped back live and acoustic, creating a chilled out funky vibe. Cat Matador started the fun with their cool alternative sounds. The darker of the bands, they certainly made our ice cream melt as we stopped and listened to their majestic tunes. Phantom Theory were the loudest with a strong style and a slight garage-rock stance, the duo strummed away on their acoustic guitars like their heart meant it and fed off the audience’s vibes. DV8 certainly enjoyed it! Attika State were the ‘headliners’ at G&D’s and ended a flavoursome musical night. Their soulful sound captured our attention as we wondered if we could get away with a bit of sly dancing. We would suggest you listen to their forthcoming single ‘Celebration?’, which comes out this month (on Alcopop records). We definitely enjoyed doing something a bit different in Oxford and we’d definitely recommend! The night at G&D’s happens bimonthly & is free for all! LITTLE FISH ALBUM LAUNCH

OXJAM @ THE CASTLE
N
ot even the pouring rain could deter DV8 from supporting a good charity cause, attending a night of special acoustic performances by some of the best bands in Oxford. The gig took place at the 03 Gallery situated at the Oxford Castle, arriving inside the first thing DV8 noticed was the unique space the bands would be playing in. An unusual circular gallery on two half levels, fitted with state of the art lighting, flagstone floors and painted stonewalls, the gallery combined contemporary design with the unique heritage of the castle. Artists on the bill included Swindlestock, Tiger Mendoza, whose sound combined acoustic guitars with electronica beats and Phantom Theory, a two-piece punk rock n roll band, who are receiving positive reviews and airplay from BBC Radio One. Last up were the Half Rabbits, who sounded like a cheerier version of Joy Division mashed together with Muse and the Smashing Pumpkins... So there you are a great night of good music and fund raising, which generated ÂŁ400 for Oxjam!

ittle Fish are a rock duo hailing from Oxford, consisting of vocalist and guitarist Juju and drummer Nez. The DV8 office have been massive fans and borderline stalkers of Little Fish from the beginning! To celebrate their debut launch, Little Fish went back to their roots putting on some small gigs, SS20 was a perfect venue, Juju announced that one of their tracks would feature on the latest Tony Hawk soundtrack. The Band were fantastic, understandably a big crowd gathered to enjoy this homecoming gig of Little Fish, we hope they return soon!

WELCOME TO PARADISE @ KUKUI
I
t’s just after midnight on a warm Saturday night and the balmy weather suits the exotic interior of one of Oxford’s most popular nightclubs, Kukui. The lights are dim and moody, a mixture of students and young professionals dance to a funky mix of house and chart music on the spacious dance floor. Home to resident DJ’s such as, Grant H and Kieran Hayes, it’s easy to understand why Kukui attracts such large crowds. For those who want a little more privacy and room to talk, there are a host of super sexy VIP booths set to one side of the dance floor, where you can enjoy a host of gorgeous drinks and cocktails served in very unique ways. Chilled Pina Coladas can be sipped from hollowed out pineapples, while cool, fresh watermelon cocktails can be enjoyed out of the very watermelon they were made from! If the mood strikes, you can even order a delicious half barrel, filled with crushed ice and rum, that will seem bottomless no matter how much you try to drain it!

MUSIC & FILM RELEASES SOPHIE.B
SCIENCE AND FAITH THE SCRIPT 13th September We’ve missed The Script! The Irish fourpiece pop-rock band are back with a new album after their stunning success with previous self-titled album, which spawned hits including Breakeven. Guitarist Mark Sheehan said: 'Science and Faith' isn't of a political or religious nature as its title would suggest, and instead, is more of a "continuation" of the band's previous work. We can’t wait!
HANDS ALL OVER MAROON 5 21st September Another band we’ve been missing is making a comeback Maroon 5 release their longawaited thirs studio album this month! Fans can look forward to hearing M5’s classic blend of soul, funk, pop and rock, as well as a little country in the form of a new song called “Out of Goodbyes,” featuring vocals from Grammywinning trio Lady Antebellum. Another surefire hit for the band.

KALEIDOSCOPE HEART – SARA BAREILLES 7th September Best known for her irresistible pop smash ‘Love Song’, Sara Bareilles returns to centre stage with her sophomore album Kaleidoscope Heart, the follow up to Little Voice. The album – which Sara wrote and the renowned Neal Avron produced features the hit single, “King of Anything.” Expect more of her signature perky and sparkling piano tunes which stay in your head for ages... but in a good way! EAT, PRAY, LOVE September 24th While trying to get pregnant, a happily married woman realises her life needs to go in a different direction, and after a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-theworld journey. THE SWITCH September 3rd An unmarried 40-yearold woman turns to a turkey baster in order to become pregnant. 7 years later, she reunites with her best friend, who has been living with a secret... CYRUS - September 24th A recently divorced guy meets the woman of his dreams. Then he meets her son. TAKERS September 17th A group of robbers find their $20 million plan interrupted by a hard-boiled detective.
I turned thirty... Looking at that sentence in bold, black type, it starts to make sense why colleagues were avoiding me nervously and friends kept asking me “how I was feeling about it all”. I actually felt – feel – completely fine about it. In my thirtieth year, I’ll get married and become an aunty and both of these things fill me with joy and anticipation, rather than dread. But I can understand the stress surrounding a ‘milestone’ birthday – particularly if you lose your job or experience a long term relationship break up in the run up to it, as some of my friends have. Why do we hang such importance on just the decades? Why can we not expect an exciting, lifechanging year when we turn seventeen, twenty four or fifty one? The last few years I’ve been experiencing my first pangs of real nostalgia – when our Absolute Radio launched ‘Absolute 90s’ I suddenly realised we were more than a few years past the mark when it became a retro music decade. The pressure on us to stay forever young, beautiful and slim has led to a lot of early deaths and some plastic surgery disasters in the celebrity world – what better reason do we need to ditch the demands of society and grow old disgracefully? You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Wake Up on Oxford’s Glide FM on 107.9

VERDE
212-214 Cowley Road, Oxford, Tel: 01865 246222
Verde is Cowley Roads most recent Italian offering, with some great Italian Pizzerias in the area, DV8 wasted no time in going along to check out exactly what Verde has to offer. First impressions count and Verde didn’t disappoint, with its friendly welcome and rustic Italian feel, the restaurant was encouragingly busy, whilst managing to maintain a relaxed and friendly ambiance. The menu has a wide variety of dishes; we decided to start with an antipasti platter with a range of meats breads and olives, beautifully presented and just as tasty. We chose an Italian classic
with a spicy twist for the main, the hot hot hot Pollo pizza with extra HOT! This really was a taste explosion, thoroughly recommended for those readers that like their spice. We also choose a traditional roasted duck dish, which was deliciously rich, accompanied by a fresh, crisp side salad. The ethos of Verde is to use organic, local produce to ensure that only the best food is served whilst supporting local suppliers, this quality was apparent in all the dishes we tasted and was delivered at a very affordable price. We recommend you check this new addition out.
ATOMIC BURGER 96 Cowley Road, Oxford
Atomic Burger is our favourite burger place in Oxford, not just because we love burgers, but because it lets us feel nostalgic over our favourite TV shows and Movies. After we were wowed by the amazing American diner style decor, we got round to sampling the food, each of the dishes is named after a Hollywood icon, popular examples include: Forest Gump - plain burger, Jack Black - Cheese, Chorizo, Fried Egg and Nacho's... We could keep going, with over sixteen varieties! We went for the special, ‘Smokey and the Bandit’, this is a burger topped with Smoked salami,
Applewood smoked cheese and cajun dipping sauce. The other burger we enjoyed was the ‘Jake 'N' Elwood’, topped with Blue Cheese, Bacon and Onions. Each burger was accompanied by a side order, we opted for the Sci Fries, which are topped with a delicious Chill. The prices start from £6 for a plain burger right through £8.50 for a burger that has four fillings. You can also get take away from the restaurant which offers a 10% discount. DV8 loves atomic burger, we hope you do too! Tel: 01865 790 855

BIG BANG 124 Walton Street, Oxford, Tel: 01865 511 4411
The Big Bang is a unique Oxford institution; loved by locals, a specialist sausage and mash restaurant whose reputation precedes it for all the right reasons. DV8 went along to experience the famous Jazz night and sample the ‘best of British’ bangers. It’s great to see that this warm, welcoming atmosphere extends to its jazz nights, the music spilled out onto the streets of Jericho, luring complete jazz novices, like us, inside to eat and listen with clued-up jazz night regulars. We started the meal with a delicious platter of olives, fresh bread and Pate. The main
course was a hard call, as we enthusiastically debated the best choice of sausage from the huge variety available. We opted for the ‘mushroom & garlic’ and ‘lamb & mint’ on one plate and ‘pork & apple’ and ‘classic Oxford’ sausage on another, planted on a bed of creamy mash and red cabbage, topped off with a generous helping of delicious gravy. Easily the best quality and tastiest sausages we’ve had. The Big Bang also offers some classic puds; the chocolate fudge cake being our winner! Visit:www.thebigbangrestaura nts.co.uk

Poker straight hair has all but been forgotten the past few seasons, but for Fall 2010 silky, shiny locks will be gracing the runways once again. However, this new trend for straight doesn’t necessarily equal flat hair, hair guru Ted Gibson says “To maintain movement and volume, iron more hair at a time, versus less”… GHD’s at the ready girls!

HYPERHIDROSIS
Sweating is a completely normal and necessary process for the body to reduce heat. Excessive sweating, known as Hyperhidrosis, is caused by over activity in the sweat glands. Both men and women can be affected, and let's face it, no one wants to be sweating more than they need to.
Hyperhidrosis Treatment involves injecting Vistabel (botox formally approved for cosmetic use) into the effected areas. The treatment works by blocking the nerve impulses in the sweat glands without affecting other nerve functions. Within just 10 days you will notice the massive reduction in sweating, DV8 OXFORD /// SEPTEMBER 2010

All Transform nurses and doctors are highly qualified and are Independent Nurse Prescribers, which means they are certified to prescribe and administer Vistabel so you are in totally safe hands. Blend this over 3/4 of the eye, avoiding the highlighter, keep adding small amounts at a time until you achieve an even colour. Using a BLACKTIED, gently using a tip of a brush work the eyeshadow into the very corner of the eye and along the eye socket, gently apply more eyeshadow to build the black colour up. Next use the PHLOOF! eyeshadow again lightly under the eyebrow, to make it more arched. To finish the look apply eyeliner. I use BLACKTRACK FLUIDLINE along the top which needs to be applied with a brush, and underneath the eye I use ENGRAVED eyeliner and blend this to give a smokey effect. False Eyelashes are optional, I like the look of the false lashes rather than using too much mascara to create the volume and length, which can look clumpy. TOP TIPS: The key to applying eyeshadow is to do it in layers, and build the colours up gradually. Don’t expect to apply the eyeshadow in one go and it to look fab - lots of layering and blending is needed. Make sure there is no hard line where the dark eyeshadow has finished just above the socket line... Use a larger soft brush and blend along the top of the eyeshadow back and forth. Apply the eyeshadow before your foundation as excess product will usually drop under the eye... Always pencil your eyebrows in, this frames the eye and fills in any gaps. You can do this with any eyeshadow which matches your brows with a eyebrow brush... Eyeshadow /Powder will give a softer less obvious finish than a pencil.

STYLE COLUMN
HOLLY FULTON & SMYTHSON
We have been a little dubious over supermarket clothing lines in the past, but Florence and Fred at Tescos has always been a winner in our eyes! This season the supermarket giant has surpassed itself - check out this fabulous Prada-esque dress (pictured above right) which nods to next season’s ‘50s Mad Men trend, as seen at Prada (above, left), Louis Vuitton and numerous other catwalks. F + F’s fabulous take on the Prada dress (in the fact that it’s practically identical!) has got us salvating in the office... it’s got the sketchy print, the ‘50s curve-creating flare and the new oh-so-hot mid-length, and all at the jawdroppingly bargain price of £20! know we’ll be racing to the checkout! Not only has F + F got this nifty little number under their belt, their new collection for Autumn/Winter 2010 is irresistible think military style jackets, bandage body-con styling and waterfall cardigans! As much as we love summer, we can’t help but get a little excited over the prospect of a brand new winter wardrobe, a la Mad Men - channel the Christina Hendricks look! Skinnys out, and curves are most definitely in - just make sure you snap this gorgeous staple piece up before the stampede! Visit www.clothingattesco.com to purchase online, or call 0845 026 9400 to find your nearest store.
So fashionable things to remember in September: Wardrobe selections and closet inventory. Of all our summer pieces how many did we wear and why didn’t we wear the others? After a truthful review lets make some tax deductable donations with the things we won’t wear and when we’re ready pack our summer wardrobe away. Notice: There are pieces that are all year round wearable but self-honesty and a reality check are very important. So what can you still wear? Well no whites, sandals or sun dresses - everything else can still be worn in a stylish and accessorised way. Eyewear it’s our best friend; again whites are to put in away into our summer wardrobe, but the rest can still be worn let’s make sure we keep it simple and clean as well as fashionable and new. And who hasn’t heard of those websites where you can sell things you don’t use? Take a photo and get rid of those not so sexy pieces. The Jacket: Denim, beige coloured leather or dark cotton. It will look great with any bright color we are so in love with that we still dare to wear it! It’s also the best accessory to any outfit. Salutations from NY to you. XOXO
