Hello DV8 Fans,
May proved to be a really fun month in Oxford, with visits from the likes of the First Lady, Michelle Obama when she dropped by Oxford University in May (we hope she took some time out to read the latest DV8!). Also, another big name, in the form of International DJ Superstar Judge Jules spun the decks at Lava Ignite over the Bank Holiday. Be sure to look out for the review on page 9.
May was a really busy month here at DV8, we are delighted to have local girl Syreeta Sims on the cover, the first in the series of local models that we will be bringing you each month. A review of the making of the cover is on page 10, we would also like to say a big thank you to Booty, Anne Veck, Nick Atkins Photography, and The Malmaison for all their help in the photoshoot. With May out of the way, and no more Bank Holidays on the horizon, what does June have in store for us? With the summer finally here, there is going to chance for some alfresco drinking. Check out our favourite beer gardens in Oxford on page 6. Also our favourite nightspots will be launching their programme of weekly summer parties, make sure you keep your nights free for some drinking, dancing, and having fun... that’s what the summer is all about, right? Happy June everyone!! DV8 Team x

THE DV8 HOT LIST
The Lodge Relocating– DV8 were sad to learn that Oxford’s only gentleman’s club was being forced to close their doors in June, however we are delighted to learn that their is a possibility of the venue relocating to near the icerink in the current venue of the Coven Club... only time will tell! River Island New Store – The shop space that used to be a Virgin Megastore has been empty for a few months. We were really pleased to see work being carried out to open as River Island. With the store opening over the next couple of weeks, we look forward to seeing what is on offer! Booty’s Next Top Model – After two months of auditions, photoshoots, interviews and more, the model competition comes to an end with the winner of Booty's Next Top Model being announced at Roppongi on Friday 17th June. With what looks like a fantastic night, there will even be a celebrity appearance from Maria Fowler of The only Way is Essex fame... Stick around as we hear Lee Ryan will also dropping by Roppongi on the same night to celebrate his birthday! There are few better places to make the most of the British summer than sitting outside, sipping a chilled drink in a beer garden. Oxford has its fair share to choose from and DV8 decided it was about time to check some of them out for ourselves.

V8 was out in force, and so were all the Uni students, at the launch of Oxford’s newest club night – ‘Fresh’ at Number 9! We said it was going to be a party not to be missed and we weren’t wrong!
It may have been Friday 13th, but no one was having an unlucky night – especially with all the treats on offer!! Everyone was greeted with a lollipop at the door and this certainly made for some saucy photo opportunities! There was also a raffle for bottles of spirits and winner of the best photo from the night got free entry to the following week! And there were certainly plenty of good photos to be had – the Oxford Halls were all out to play, including one who had been to a Fancy Dress Party – cue spicy Mexicans, cute Piñatas and racy Airline Stewardesses & French Maids! These were soon joined by a Pub Golf Team who competed in the fancy dress stakes with knee high socks, argyle knits and visors!! The main bar and dancefloor were both buzzing right from opening – the bar had the lure of great drinks promos; including cocktail jugs for £10 and shots for a mere £1.50! And the dancefloor had DJ Collins with some banging old skool tunes! So if you haven’t been already make sure you are at the next Fresh night – DV8 will certainly be going back for more! Stay up to date by looking Fresh up on Facebook and joing their group.

JUDGE JULES@ LAVA IGNITE
T
he World Famous and Internationally-acclaimed Radio1 DJ Judge Jules came to Lava & Ignite this month for a very special bank holiday gig.
With the Ibiza party season just around the corner, Judge Jules performed a warm up set of all the huge Euphoric Trance Tunes that he will be playing at his DJ residency ‘Judgment Sundays’ at Eden this summer. Joining him in the Main Room was Lava & Ignite’s very own Antoni James. Jules has played many unforgettable gigs in Oxford over the years, and really raised the roof at Lava, blending his obvious passion for dance music with technically brilliant sets, The reaction from the crowd was every inch like a true Ibiza crowd; wild, enthusiastic and loud - showing their appreciation of the music! Lava & Ignite have recently welcomed a whole list of international superstars, and with the next bank holiday at the end of August, we wonder who they will be inviting to host what we have no doubt, will be, another amazing night. Keep you ears open!

We here at DV8 really love putting together a cover shoot, and we have watched enough Americas Next Top Model to get to understand the basics of what to do! So for the first of our winners in the Face of DV8 competition we thought we would bring you a little of what went on behind the scenes, and a chance to learn a little bit more about the various elements that went into making this monthʼs cover... First up, the model herself. We had a brief interview with Syreeta last month, where she talked about her modelling background and aspirations, and not to mention what it meant to be on the cover! Selecting the model was an easy task, mainly because it was out of our hands as it came down to the public to choose, so that was number one ticked off the list.
Page 10
We were fortunate enough to make use of their visitorsʼ bar as the backdrop to the shoot. If you havenʼt had the chance to drop by, you really should.. with killer cocktails, a classic setting, every visit is a smash hit.
“we wanted a location that was cool, classy, sophisticated and sexy”
Second on the list, was sourcing a location. We wanted a setting that was cool, classy, sophisticated and sexy (do you think we ask for much?). The obvious and unanimous choice was the Malmaison.
How about the hair? We needed to choose a styling that was befitting of such a beautiful model, so we decided we would need an award winning hairstylist, and there is no one better than our very own columnist Anne Veck.
For the shoot itself, Anne created two very different looks. The first was a funky afro style, which mixed the popular styling from the 70ʼs with todayʼs current trends in fashion. Syreeta wore a blush dress with corsage (by Rare - £32, Booty Oxford) to compliment and complete the look. We should probably mention at this point that Booty Oxford (you can find this cool little

boutique on the High Street) supplied us with the clothes for the shoot. Booty is well established as a fashion store that stocks high end fashion for todayʼs fashionista, looking for something a little different and edgier. The second look was a more formal grand look, with Syreeta wearing a gorgeous long, one shoulder, ivory ball gown (by Marchesa, and currently £230, instore at Booty). The hair was fixed in a sexy style to match the dress, with the afro straightened out, and expert care and detail put into the stunning hairstyle. We think you will agree that the fresults were amazing.
you will also find the whole collection of shots from booth shoots). Nick is a well established photographer with many years experience in the field, snapping everything from landscapes to fashion shows the world over. You can check out his portfolio at www.nickatkinsphotography.com or his flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/nickatkins
“We needed styling that was befitting of such a beautiful model”
We have to of course mention the person who was the other side of the camera, Nick Atkins, who did a splendid job of capturing our front cover image (and if you head over to our facebook page
Over the next month we will be welcoming our other face of DV8 winners to the cover, and we hope you enjoy the results as much as we enjoyed doing the shoots. And who knows, soon the cover model could be you? If youʼre interested get in contact at oxford@dv8online.co.uk

e at DV8 loved the last Vauderville Rave, so we were very excited to learn that the burlesque themed evening was making a return over the Bank Holiday Weekend.
The theme for the rave was based on everyones’ darkside and the fall from splendour! Throughout history we have learnt that things can go really well and then go south.. look at the crash of the 1929 stock market? However even when things are really bad, coming together for a night of drinking, dancing and entertainment would always put a pin in the problems until morning, with bankers hitting the bottle while their wives took lovers or turned to the night to make money.
Away from the glitz and glamour of other burlesque parties, we were happy to put a darker twist on our costumes, from ripped fishnets and smeared makeup to disheveled suits and untamed hair. The Vauderville Rave always pulls a huge crowd, each person dressed with their own interpretation of the theme, incorporating the look and fall from grace due to the excesses of power, money and of course sex. Absinthe was the tipple of the evening… that certainly added to our ruin for the night! With an Absinthe cocktail on arrival it started of the night with a bang! No burlesque show is ever complete without entertainment in the form of cabaret., We marveled at the beautiful girls falling from the ceiling entangled in silk ropes, while entertainers took to the stage to give revelers a modern twist with DJ sets and beatboxers and we even saw a sword swallower or two! Also dotted around the club were ‘mini’ DV8 OXFORD /// June/July 2011

entertainments brought to us by our own tour guide who showed us around the club, which incidentally used to be a vauderville theatre, we marvelled at vendors and characters dotted around, including the seedy man in the projection room, with girls frolicking on beds, to the harlet on the roof! The night was fantastically planned and put together, we loved all the small details that added to the atmosphere, and if you missed out this time, be sure to join them on facebook to see when the next event will be, as it is one we will not be missing!!

here are a few traditions in England we don't have the opportunity to embrace, one of which is the annual American tradition of Spring Break! We love spring break. Ever since watching Piranha 3D earlier this year, we have been waiting for the opportunity to hit some sunnier climes, have a few drinks, and witness a wet t-shirt competition (of course without the killer fish!). So we were delighted when DV8 favourite Wahoo put on a Spring Break themed weekend over the bank holiday! (Although if Kelly Brook could have made an appearance that would have made our weekend!) The weekend was put on in conjunction with T.O.R. Events climaxed on the Sunday night with a UV rave with the party going on all the way until 4am. It was a great weekend at Wahoo, and with lots of people really embracing the theme by getting into swimwear, what was there not to like! With the next Bank Holiday in August we wonder what will be instore?

Fat Poppadaddys has been rocking the UK for the last 12 years. We loved the vibe, with a variety of tunes being mashed and remixed on the decks by Chris Bound. In addition there were some great drinks deals (we love the Pina Coladas at Lola’s!) and the crowded club made for an excellent Thursday night. SOPHIE B.
I’ve spent the last 3 months writing about our big social experiment 2 Strangers and a Wedding and now that’s all over there’s another wedding on the horizon… mine! It’s entirely strange to think that by the time you read this, I’ll have a different name, a different signature and will be a Mrs.
My other half keeps joking that I’ve been dreaming about this day since I was tiny but in reality I‘ve dreamt more about love… finding my handsome prince… than the ceremony itself.
Planning a wedding is just a huge feat and something you go into totally blind – you have no idea what’s cheap and what’s expensive and it’s a pretty nerve-wracking experience. It’s also massively fun though – and knowing you’ve had a hand in creating the end event is a really nice thought.
We met the registrar last week and got chatting about some of the most memorable weddings he has presided over, including the one where the couple’s toddler son announced ‘I need a WEE WEE’ just as the registrar got to the ‘does anyone know any reason why I can’t join this man and woman…’ part of the ceremony. Priceless.
If you’re loved up then huge congrats. If you’re not, you could do worse than check out www.glidefmdating.com – where lots of local hotties are registered. Because let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than heading into Oxford for a night out, meeting someone and really clicking with them… and then finding out they live in the Outer Hebrides and are in town for 2 days. Give it a go, for me if not for yourself. Let’s face it, after a wedding and honeymoon I’m going to need to live vicariously through someone else’s dating stories!
You can catch Gaz Wesley weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9 this month – Sophie’s back on July 1st.

THE BRASSERIE @ THE MALMAISON
Not only is the Brasserie at Malmaison a truly unique venue (being part of Oxford’s original prison and now a luxury boutique hotel) but it also serves up simple British dishes of outstanding quality!
Set in the heart of the hotel, the Brasserie seats up to 100 people in a series of spaces so always feels cosy and intimate. What also makes this place special are the original features of the prison; with the old metal staircases running through the centre of the restaurant and numerous arched stone doorways. It also has private cells (sorry dining rooms!) which can seat from 2 -30 people and an alfresco terrace (the old exercise yard!) to boot. We had heard the glowing reviews here at DV8, but we decided to go and see, or rather taste for ourselves. We arrived at 7.30pm on a Thursday evening in May and the restaurant was already buzzing! We were seated and attended to straight away and
the service was impeccable all night – although we had a hard job choosing our food and drinks from such a vast and delicious selection!
The Castle Complex, Oxford, 01865 268400
We finally chose the Argentinean Malbec/Shiraz from the extensive wine cellar and to accompany our wine we shared a Rustic Baguette with Tapenade. We then had Mussels in Saffron Cream and a Rabbit & Chicken Parfait to start. As for our mains we sampled the 35 day aged Rump Steak and Blue Cheese Salad. Then we had Panna cotta for dessert and finished off the evening with cocktails in the stunning bar terrace (previously the visiting room!). The Brasserie not only serves fantastic food and wine, but also has a genuine passion for local food, sourcing meat from local farms and fish from our very own covered market. So all in all this certainly was a dining experience to remember - book your table now on 01865 268400 www.Malmasion.com!

CULINARY DELIGHTS
THE FISHERS 36-37 St Clements, Oxford,
The Fishers Restaurant is definitely a restaurant whose reputation as Oxford’s best seafood restaurant precedes it! We were really exciting to drop by the Oxford branch on St Clements to check out the hype for ourselves. One of the things we really loved about The Fishers is the interior decoration, the restaurant offers quaint charm that wouldn't look out of place in the rustic settings of a New England port! The choices on the menu cater for everyone, including those who may not even be keen on fish, so there really is no excuse for not making a trip. On arrival we were seated in the window and had chance to look out on the busy St Clements as people went about their business, and drank a glass of wine, while deciding what to have from the extensive and delicious menu. We decided to start with some Deep-fried Calamari with dill mayonnaise and some Beer battered Tiger Prawns with sweet chilli dipping sauce, these were the perfect starter
01865 243 003
as we both got to try each others! The batter on the prawns was perfectly crisp and brown (probably not the healthiest thing in the world, but the taste made up for it!) The main soon followed as we chose the Char-grilled Swordfish steak with garlic roasted peppers (this is a definite must for people not keen on fish, the texture and taste of the swordfish is definitely meaty). What would a visit to a fish restaurant be without a traditional haddock and chips? This again was perfectly cooked, with a healthy side of mushy peas... one word, delicious! With a daily changing menu, to match the wide range of fresh fish shipped in each day, no two trips will ever be the same! The staff are friendly and welcoming, with a great knowledge of the dishes available, and what wines would complement the food. The Fishers is definitely a restaurant in our top ten, and we cannot wait for our next trip!
BARTENDER OF THE MONTH
HANNAH THE LIVING ROOM
How long have you worked as a bartender? I have worked here for the last four months Can you flair? I’m practising, so maybe you will see me in the upcoming bartender competition! Any other tricks? My party trick is to drink a lot of Rum!! What is your signature drink? Hannah’s Rum! (see the cocktail of the month) How many cocktails does the Living Room offer? We have a lot on offer, with 70-80 on the menu. We also will make anything off the menu, we are all pretty creative, and are always willing to make something up! What is your favourite thing about working at the Living Room? The staff, they are all really fun to work with. Also I get to work with a lot of boys as i’m the only girl bartender!

Fitness in the summer is the bomb. When it comes to milder months, lighter mornings and evenings, there is nothing better than getting out in the open air and letting off some steam from day to day life. It helps re-set the mind by whacking endorphins into your body (legal highs).
Top tips for summer exercise -Cycle or run to work instead of driving or catching the bus -Go for a run. Running is key to getting a great bikini body as it uses the whole of the body unlike the cross trainer that only isolates areas of the body. -Invest in a heart rate monitor and run keeping your heart rate above 75% of your maximum for at least 20 minutes, 3 times a week. -Get a group of friends together and do my 6 week programme below. Exercising as part of a team will help as you can encourage each other. Colin始s 6 Week Programme
The ideal setting for this is in your local park. Run to the park as your warm up (approx 10 minutes). Then do the following exercises. Remember to include a ten minute run home as a cool down.

Eat the right things Nutrition is key for getting a hot bikini body or getting into those budgie smugglers. Slimming clubs are a great way of losing weight for short term goals; they provide you with a network of like minded people who keep you on track by encouraging you, but what happens when you achieve your goal? Yes you guessed it, complacency kicks in and we end up overindulging again! It始s my personal belief that we should find out what is good for our own bodies, food wise, within a trial and error process. I believe this should be done by attempting one of the 3 types of diets: Protein only diets, within my experience this tends to help people who have been trying to lose weight for a long time; the protein helps speed up the metabolism which helps with burning more calories in your day to day activities. Carbohydrate diets, this is the complete opposite of the above, remembering that all bodies are different all we are trying to do is find things your body can more easily work with so we speed up the metabolism. Balanced diet, to create your own balanced diet can tend to help in relation to weight loss. Are you the type of person that is on the go all the time, doesn始t have time to cook for yourself and ends up eating fast food? Most people don始t know what goes into takeaway food and it seems no-one is too fussed! 9 times out of 10 we consume too much in one portion and the calories we intake are far too great for what our body needs. Fast food tends to be high in fats, salts and sugars, so why not cook for yourself? Cooking for yourself is cheaper, you know what is going into your food and you can portion control a lot better. Cooking can be a social thing too, why not rope a couple of mates from your exercise programme!! Remember that you have to put in the effort to see results. Good luck!!

What makes you a poser? I like the way I look, I spend quite a lot of time getting ready, especially on a Saturday night Describe yourself in three words Fun, Flirty and preety good-looking!
What is your ultimate hangover cure? Hangovers are bad, and the older I have got the worse they are. It doesn’t stop me from going out though! sometimes I find the hair of the dog is the best cure... you just need to get back on it!
Where can we find you out and about on a Saturday in Oxford? I quite like the Cowley Road, I’m often in the Cape of Good Hope at the beginning of the night, and maybe ending up in the O2 or the Regal. I quite like a night in Jericho as well for some cocktails
