fore word
Hello and welcome to the latest edition of DV8 Oxford. April has been another crazy yet amazing month, the weather was outstanding and the bank holidays just kept coming! The DV8 office (like the rest of the nation) was gripped with Royal Wedding fever, so getting back to work and reality has been a real struggle! Luckily for us we have had a lot of exciting events to cover, to help ease us back in…
In this issue you will find a round up of Oxford’s best Easter shenanigans including a record breaking May Day, the crowning of Miss Oxford 2011 and the official launch party of Electric hair salon in Oxford, not to mention a Q&A with the stunning face of DV8 finalists.
The team were very sad to hear that one of our favorite nightclubs Kukui is shutting it's doors in May, we took some time to reminisce about all the amazing nights we’ve had there which have included burlesque, Halloweens live autopsy, celebrity appearances from the Essex lot and much more! Not to mention the amount of treasure chest cocktails we must have drank! I wonder if they are selling those off? They would make a great feature in any house party! In Kukui's absence we are happy to welcome Lola Lo to the Oxford night scene, she has hit the town by storm, each night busier than the last, look out for our review of the fantastic launch night on page 18. Anyway we hope you have a fun packed May and look forward to seeing you out and about. Love
The DV8 team Xoxo

MAY EXPOSURE
Always thought of the Malmaison in Oxford as a hotel and nothing more? Well think again as DV8 recently discovered the delights of its rooftop bar. Located in the heart of the fantastic Castle complex in a converted prison building, the Malmaison’s roof-top bar instead is completely modern and offers people a relaxed but sophisticated location. It is slightly surreal when you first step outside onto grass, seeing shrubs and the orange sunshades, knowing that you are in fact on the roof of a building. However, it quickly becomes a very natural experience and, whether you are
FRESH @ No9
Friday May 13th signals a brand new night in Oxford as our friends at No.9 launch Fresh, promising banging tracks from old school king DJ Dale Collins and a whole host of drinks promos with our favorite jugs of cocktails for a tenner and all shots just £1.50!.... Thank FRESH it's Friday! Tickets are just £3 and VIP booths and queue jumping are available now! Get yourself on the hottest guest list in town by finding No.9 Nightclub Oxford on facebook and writing on the Fresh event wall. attending one of their wine dinners, a jazz Sunday, or simply there with some friends as we were, the intimate surroundings don’t disappoint.
We can safely say that sitting outside while sipping a ‘damsel in distress’ (a tasty mix of jack cain’s damson gin, fresh lemon, angostura bitters, mure liquor and sugar gomme), while looking out over the impressively preserved buildings that surround you, is a pleasant experience that is unique in Oxford. Credit is due to the staff at ‘The Mal’ that, despite its heritage as a place of incarceration, they’ve managed to retain its character while creating a venue that is refreshingly contemporary. Combine this with regular DJ nights, delicious barbeques and regularly updated lunch deals and we feel that this could quickly become our new favourite place to go. Find Malmaison Oxford on Facebook to keep up-to-date with the latest roof top events and for regular sunshine updates.
TOWN & GOWN
Voted as one of the best road races in the UK, the annual Oxford Town & Gown is a fast and unique 10k course which allows you to pace the closed streets of Oxford city centre, passing historic buildings, picturesque scenes and ending in the beautiful University parks. Join 4,000 runners and a carnival atmosphere with wacky fancy dress and team challenges you'll be cheered on the whole way round by a host of spectators. Stick around after the race for entertainment and the award ceremonies.
The Town and Gown race, celebrating its 30th year raises money for victims of muscle disease, which is incurable and life limiting. The money raised for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign helps them to continue their vital work – such as funding research and providing free care and support for the 70,000 children and adults affected.
The race is run on Sunday 15th May, and if your not running, we hope you come along to cheer everyone along, and have some fun with the fantastic entertainment. More information can be found at the Muscular Dystrophy website at: http://www.muscular-dystrophy.org

T
he second of the Bank Holidays in April saw Lava Ignite bring one of the biggest UK music brands to Oxford for the very first time.
Born in London over 20 years ago, the home of dance music Ministry of Sound touched down in Oxford for an extended club night, bringing a showcase from their RnB Anthem Tour. We were ready with our A-game as this was one seductive and sensual affair not to be missed! With Ministry resident RnB Anthems DJs Martin 2 Smoove and Skinz spinning all our favourite and biggest hits from over the past two decades to create a dance fusion so intense we never wanted to leave the dance floor. This was unquestionably one of the ultimate clubbing occasions of the year so far. All in all Lava Ignite pulled out all the stops to make this a Bank Holiday weekend, not to be forgotten. We were glad for the lay in on Monday!
We hope it isn’t too long until the Ministry of Sound comes back into town on another one of their tours, be sure to keep a look out, as it’s not to be missed!

IRONIK @ LAVA IGNITE
L
ava Ignite kicked off the first of the bank holiday weekends with the ultimate urban club night experience, brought to Oxford by international super brand ‘Twice as Nice’ and featuring special guests Ironik and DJ Steve Sutherland.
The mass of partygoers were on a holiday high, going crazy as Ironik performed his new track ‘Killed Me’, the Top 10 ‘Stay With Me’ and the smash hit ‘Tiny Dancer’, which samples Sir Elton himself! If the massive crowd response wasn’t enough to convince us of Ironik’s A-List star qualities then one look at his hot new music video ‘Falling in Love’ starring 90210 beauty Jessica Lowndes had to be proof! MOBO award winning DJ Steve Sutherland played a banging live set supported by Oxfords finest Urban DJs 2Xclusive playing the best in R&B, Hip-Hop, UK Funky House, Bassline, Garage, Dancehall and Soul with some Soulful House Classics on the side.
As far as the DV8 team are concerned we couldn’t have asked for a better way to welcome in the bank holiday!

hen it comes to themed nights DV8 can always count on Wahoo to pull out all the stops, so we were really excited to go along to their Easter weekend event, ‘Welcome to Wahoonderland’!.. Easter reminds us of bunnies and we heart bunnies, especially when they’re at Wahoo and of the playboy variety! The weekend had a Mad Hatter Tea Party theme, cocktails were served in teapots, and for the hardcore partiers, there was a UV themed rabbit rave that went on til 4am! As always Wahoo know how to throw a good party!

MISS OXFORD FINALS @ ROPPONGI
T
his April the search has been on to find Miss Oxford 2011. The Oxford heat was held in the sexy and stylish Roppongi where eleven finalists battled it out, in a series of rounds. The judges had the impossible task of choosing who should go forward to represent Oxford in the Miss England Final, and move one step closer to winning a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent England in Miss World. A big congratulation go to stunning winner Kirsty Beer, who we are sure will be a fantastic entrant and will do an excellent job of representing Oxford.

Take a walk thr
Jericho is sometimes the forgotten part of Oxford town, tucked away behind the bolder and more mainstream shops and bars, itʼs a gem that we urge you to explore. Only a short five minute walk from the centre, itʼs a great alternative to the high street, being a very cool fashionable district it contains some of Oxfordʼs coolest drinking and eating venues along with some smashing independent shops. It presents a new kind of Oxford and if the pubs are alright for Inspector Morse, then theyʼre alright for us right? Join us as we take a walk
through a selection of our favourite Jericho haunts.
Activity
The Phoenix is one of Oxfordʼs best offbeat treasures; first opening up in 1913 (!) it has been
through many transformations (in the 90s it had a roof top bar!). Showcasing some of the best arthouse and independent films, along with screen classics and mainstream blockbusters in lovely comfortable surroundings, with itʼs own café & bar for before-or-after film fun. We hear it often hosts introductory talks by actors and directors too (recently Sir Ian McKellen made a visit!).
Food
You canʼt mention Jericho without mentioning the Big Bang restaurant in the same sentence. A relaxing venue offering all the types of bangers & mash you could ever dream of. Great local produce and often hosts chic Jazz music nights. Dv8 would also recommend Branca as a great contemporary Italian bar and restaurant with a very modern vibe. A very lively but chilled venue with a tasty menu!

edge of Jericho. The Mahogany Team deliver a top quality service that they are very proud of, with everyone being trained by the ʻMahogany Creative Teamʼ to ensure there is complete consistency across the business (the other salon being London). The salon has a warm and confident atmosphere with the hairdressers carrying out a full consultation before the cut – you are sure to walk out that door a new you! (DV8ʼs Top Tip: 25% student and NHS discount available Monday Friday)
Drinking Jericho is a charming place for a drink, from pint to cocktail, there is a bar to suit all fancies! The Duke of Cambridge has been one of Oxfordʼs leading cocktail bars for over 25 years, with a trendy chilled vibe in the week; it explodes with atmosphere during the weekend. Fresh ingredients and cool interiors make this bar stand out! Not forgetting the all new Love Jericho with itʼs cool seating areas and amazing happy hour
cocktails! Also old favourite Angels which boasts some high class cocktail making, including the amazing ʻVintage Cocktailʼ range. Freuds is another classic venue, housed in a former Greek Revival Church, Freud provides cocktails, homemade pizzas and other enticing treats. Not to rention the award winning Raouls, which is always worth a trip!
Shopping Uncle Samʼs Vintage shop is an unusual shop thatʼll make you question your own style, rummaging through the fashion finds (including some awesome leather jackets) is enough to make you realise your own clothes just arenʼt cool enough anymore. Apparently they sell ʻeverything that was cool when your dad was youngʼ. Itʼs more fashionable that most vintage shops and definitely lends itself more to the American-style clothing, which is perfect for the preppy summer fashion! Article: Sally Day Photo: Tomosz Rae

E
lectric Hairdressing Oxford is riding high after the successful opening of a brand new super-chic Oxford salon on St. Ebbes Street last month and the launch of their much-anticipated uber-luxe range of hair products, Electric Hair Care. DV8 were lucky enough to get an invitation to celebrate both of these achievements with the Electric team at their exclusive VIP launch party. The ground floor of the stylish three story salon was packed with Oxfords finest, sipping champagne, and scoffing delicious canapés provided by the Malmaison Hotel and luxurious chocolates from Hotel Chocolat. Raoul’s cocktail bar provided the drinks, honoring the new salon with its own signature cocktail ‘An Electric Twizzle’. Mixologist Alex (sporting a funky Electric hair do) developed the fresh, tangy cocktail to reflect the salons dynamic, stylish and cool vibe. Head honcho and award winning, super-stylist Mark Woolley welcomed the gathered crowd to Electrics newest salon and introduced the new Electric Hair Care range which includes shampoos and conditioners for hydration and colour and styling products to tackle frizz, protection and shape with a serum, smoothing cream, intensive masque and paste. The products are available exclusively in Electric Salons and Harvey Nichols.
We really enjoyed the launch, and at the end of the evening we were all sent home with a goody bag, filled with some fantastic samples, the girls in the DV8 office were all really pleased, and can’t wait to book themselves in for a haircut at Electric. EASTER FRIDAYS @ CAMERA
D
V8 loves Easter, so we couldn’t have been happier that the team at Camera decided to celebrate Easter every Friday in April! Oxford’s sexiest and stylish came out to play with nights including a pre-party to ‘the Only Way is Essex’ stars Joey and Lauren dropping into sister club The Bridge. Now that the second basement club floor is fully open, with a modern turbo sound system and lighting, Camera is a serious contender for our most memorable moment of the Easter celebrations this year! We look forward to seeing what Camera has planned next.

fter the closure of PoNaNa last summer, DV8 was really excited to learn that the club was re-opening as Lola Lo, an intimate Tiki-themed tropical oasis where the party promised to go on and on.
On April the 9th we joined fellow partygoers to welcome Lola to Oxford! Expectations were high with the club promising the biggest tunes, the prettiest people and the best drinks in town. As we looked out over the new Tiki club one thing was for sure, the interior definitely didn’t disappoint. The details are amazing with bamboo interiors, hand-carved wood, private booths with thatched roofs, and distinctive blowfish lamps (could these be real?) this is definitely one premium nightclub. So did they have the best drinks? The bar staff and range of drinks were certainly very impressive, we caught up with bar tender extraordinaire Philip Kalantri who served us up some delicious daiquiris and creative cocktails served in exclusive Tiki mugs in the shape of a curvy wahine (Hawaiian woman) and stylized moai (human figure).
As for the rest of the club? The dance floor was packed with clubbers draped in tropical garlands and dancing to top tunes that were accompanied by a live bongo player. This was a really fantastic launch that placed Lola firmly at the premier end of the Oxford club scene. Securing its place as the best and now only Tiki club in town!

SOPHIE B.
Our big social experiment 2 Strangers and a Wedding has reached its conclusion, but rather than it being the end of the story, it’s just the beginning for our couple! Justine and Rob exchanged vows and rings in front of over 100 friends and family (and thousands more listeners glued to their radios) live on air just before the bank holiday on Thursday 21st May. Sitting on the sidelines in the Visitor’s Room at the Malmaison Hotel in Oxford, microphone in hand and buttonhole pinned to my dress, it was possibly the most bizarre experience of my 10 years in radio so far. It was also amazing. When the masks came down and their faces revealed (if you haven’t been following, the altar was the first time the couple had set eyes on each other) there was the most unbelievable whoop from the audience – the atmosphere was electric. The pair are now on honeymoon in Majorca thanks to Great Experience Travel (with separate bedrooms of course) which they’re brilliantly calling their “fourth date”. Life doesn’t get stranger than this! Personally, it’s nice to see them get some time to themselves aware from the glare of the cameras and microphones and I genuinely hope they do get something out of this experience, whether it’s love or friendship. You can see the pictures and video of the wedding and the whole story at www.2strangers.co.uk and of course we’d love to know what you think… or if you’re tempted to sign up for 2012. (I’m joking… I think…) You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Morning Glory on Glide FM 107.9

THE LIVING ROOM The Castle Complex, Oxford, 01865 260210
The Living Room is one of DV8 Oxford’s favourite restaurant bars and has played host to many of our special occasions from the DV8 launch event in July last year, to our publishers *big* birthday bash this April and countless drinks and dinners. So, when we heard that they had just launched their Spring/Summer À la Carte menu we were eager to pay the restaurant a visit to sample it. We started with Tomato, bocconcini mozzarella and pesto bruschetta and Tiger prawns and roasted red peppers in a garlic and chilli butter with ciabatta. Both were delicious and beautifully presented, the yellow tomato’s giving the bruschetta a playful twist. For main we went for Whole grilled lemon sole with garlic and parsley butter, new potatoes and wilted spinach and Rack of lamb with a honey, mustard and herb crust, served with gratin potatoes, fine beans and a light red wine jus. For someone who is not a big fish eater the lemon sole seemed like it could be a brave choice but
after requesting that whole mean without the head (so it didn’t look at us!) it was definitely worth the risk. The flavours were beautiful the fishiness was subtle and cooked to perfection. The rack of lamb seemed like an obvious spring choice and this didn’t disappoint either, cooked perfectly pink to order and with a tower of gratin potatoes creating an impressive looking plate. For dessert we chose the Eton mess with PIMM’S© and poached strawberries and the White chocolate and Bourbon biscuit cheesecake with strawberries drenched in a basil syrup these were wolfed down with much enthusiasm and the Eton mess with the addition of Pimm’s has to be the best we’ve tasted. We had a great evening at the Living Room, the service and food were great and the live pianist playing the baby grand piano in the bar created a stylish and relaxed night.
The Jericho Cafe, has always been a favourite hangout of DV8 staff, there is no better place to grab breakfast (available from 8am to 6pm!), lunch, brunch or even a full evening meal. We really love the Parisian chic of the interior, and the option to grab a pavement table for a spot of alfresco dining on warm spring days. The bistro is also fully licensed which means you could be sipping pinot or tea! The menu offers the best of home-cooked dishes from British classics to a selection of favourites from the continent. After seeing the range of tempting choices on the menu, we opted for a started to share, the Bruschetta looked like a fantastic choice, griddled bread rubbed with garlic, topped with chopped tomatoes and olive oil. The service was very prompt, which was really nice, as the cafe was busy with lots of other customers, busily chatting away. For the mains, first up was the Home-made beef and coriander burger served in a warm ciabatta
bun with tomato and red pepper relish, fries and salad. We love burgers, and with so many different burger places to eat in Oxford, this is definitely worth a recommendation. We also went for Char-grilled butterfly chicken breast topped with crispy bacon and served with chive mash and home made pesto, again this was perfectly cooked and really well presented. The taste of the homemade pesto was delicious, much better than out of a jar! What really set this meal apart was the ambience; cool music, chatty customers and charming staff who are all willing to stop and have a chat with you, they are also very knowledgeable about the menu, and will make recommendations, and alter dishes as per your request. We really recommend a trip to the Jericho Cafe, trust us if you walk past and take a glance in the selection of cakes on display will do an excellent job of tempting you in!

What is your ultimate hangover cure? Sex? Or If I didn’t pull the night before, nothing beats a full English breakfast with orange juice and a lot of coffee, then back to bed with some asprin and sleep it off. Then a trip to the gym to sort myself out.
Where can we find you out and about on a Saturday in Oxford? Everywhere, I like to mix it up a lot, and go to different places. Sometimes I hit Oxford centre, and go to Roppongi, and Camera. I quite like the smaller bars and clubs. I quite like the new club Lola Lo and Also No.9. I also like the Cowley Road, its always a good laugh. Whatever happens on a Saturday night it involves lots of shots!

What are you looking forward to most this summer? Getting down the park with some friends, laying in the sun and having a few beers. That’s what the summers all about. Oxford is full of fit girls, so I’m going to make the most of it! What is your ultimate chat up line? I don’t need to use them, but if I did... “You see my friend over there? He wants to know if you think I'm cute?”
