fore word

Welcome to the third edition of DV8 Oxford. The leaves are falling off the trees, the clocks have gone back and the nights are closing in. What does that mean? Longer nights and more time to party in Oxford!!! During October we have had some really fantastic nights out. We sipped champers at the Oxfordshire heats of the Miss Great Britain Competition – which was surprisingly much more than just tiaras, tantrums and dreams of world peace! Enjoyed some serious VIP treatment striking a pose on the red carpet at the launch party for Oxfords newest nightclub No9, partied with tabloid playboy Calum Best at Roppongi and hosted our own sexy singles night ‘Fun, Foxy and Ready to Flirt’ at Camera.

With November just about to start, we are looking forward to the amazing fireworks spectacle at South Parks, each year it gets better and better. We also hear there is going to be more celebrity appearances in town during the month, so make sure you join our Facebook group to stay up to date with all the latest Oxford news. Happy November everyone, we will see you in December for the countdown to Christmas and the all-important question, where will you be on NYE 2011? xxx

EXPOSURE

HEARD IT ON THE OXFORD GRAPE VINE...

Booty is described by its website as ‘Oxford’s finest womens fashion boutique’ and the girls at DV8 certainly agree! Booty is a gorgeous little boutique known by the more well educated of Oxford fashionista’s... Tucked away on St Aldates Street, you must keep your eyes peeled otherwise you might miss it! A gem of a find, it hosts much of the fashion that you would expect to see on the high-street, but with a twist of originality. If you’re looking for a Saturday night dress that oozes ‘Where did she get that from?’ then come here, you’ll be sure to stand out in the crowd! Everything is very reasonably priced and there are even amazing

designer bargains to look out for! DV8 are especially impressed by Booty’s dress collection, from kooky bow details, crazy prints, glam designer musts and even the old reliable LBD we all so love. DV8 love the accessories, with on-trend jewellery and clutch bags, head bands and hats to add to our wish list. Booty also stock suit jackets, make up, knitwear, underwear and even tracksuits. For such a pocket small location Booty certainly manages to fit in a lot of fantastic fashion. Always bringing the next trend to Oxford, Booty is definitely the best place to go to grab your party outfits and get ready for the winter nights! Tel: 01865 726761

DV8 HQ have been keeping our eyes and ears to the ground, making sure that we are the first to hear all the latest news about the biggest parties of the year. Our friends from the facebook group Clubbing in Oxford , tell us to think snake charmers, fire eaters and drinks for a reasonable price... If you have any news and rumours that you think we should know about, then send us an email at: oxford@dv8online.co.uk

Oxford Fashion week has announced that the Oxford fashion event of the year will be held on the 28th February - 6th March, 2011. DV8 is really excited about viewing the new designs and collections that will be on show. We were blown away by the exciting concept catwalk, and the fabulous lingerie show, which was showcased at the Malmaison in 2010. The next Oxford Fashion Week promises to be bigger and better than ever before… So all you fashionista’s out there, keep your diaries free! More information will be released soon, remember to check out the website at www.oxfordfashioweek.com

No.9 opened its doors for the first time at the end of September with a super VIP party, complete with red carpet and paparazzi taking snaps of all the well turned out crowd. But, how can they follow up with such a fantastic event? well each week No.9 proves why it is Oxford’s best new club, with two floors of dancing with music to cater for all tastes, from RnB, Chart, Dance On a Friday night is paparazzi, remember to strike a pose, DJs and drinks all night, on Saturday night No.9 hosts Twisted Vodka, and awesome night of the finest selection of DJ's, Drinks Deals and the best

The Radio 1 Student Tour saw DJ’s Fearne Cotton and Zane Lowe broadcasting live from Oxford Brookes University Mez Bar and The O2 Academy on Wednesday 20th October. Fearne had a crash course in university life and got down and dirty with the students challenging them to prove their domestic skills in a timed race to change a duvet cover. She was joined by Chase & Status for an acoustic Live Lounge set. Later that night Zane’s show came live from the O2 and featured headlining acts Chase & Status supported by Example. This was a gig not to be missed, DV8 were most definitely on board!

xford’s finest were out in force to celebrate the launch of No.9 the newest and hottest venue in town! You have to hand it to the folk of No.9, they don’t half do things in style. To mark the grand opening and the launch of their new Friday event ‘Paparazzi’ guests were treated to the VIP treatment. DV8 arrived early to get on the red carpet and have our photos taken by the resident photographer and we have to say we’ve never looked so good!

Located on the High Street in the former Escape club site we were eager to get inside and see what No.9 had to offer. We loved the new layout of the club, which boasts bigger spaces for dancing and relaxing, especially in the huge leather seats. The stylish surroundings covering two floors makes No. 9 a top contender for ‘the place to be’ on a Friday and Saturday night. The club filled up early on, with revellers all wanting to be a part of the launch night action. The atmosphere was buzzing as everyone threw themselves into the party spirit, the night turned out to be one of the best on the September social calendar. DJs spun a range of music from R’n’B to club classics, which took the party till 3am.

The exclusive third floor of the building houses another new venue the Marrakesh Lounge which for the No9. launch was reserved for VIPs only, (which of course we were!). The Marrakesh Lounge is a decedent Moroccan inspired bar, with beautiful décor and large areas for dancing and relaxing, it even has a pole for the more adventurous! It offered a great place to sit back, relax and rest our party feet after all that dancing.

FUN, FOXY & READY TO FLIRT @ CAMERA

Our favourite part of September was the launch of DV8’s first flirting night ‘Fun, Foxy & Ready to Flirt’ at Camera Nightclub. The DV8 team were extremely excited with the promising guestlist in hand, the night was sure to be a hit! On a Wednesday evening what would you rather be doing than having a few flirty cocktails in a cool bar and mingling with new and likeminded singles?

The night started with a bang as we welcomed all the party goers to the bar covered in pic’n’mix sweets and tips on how to break the ice. The DJ blasted flirty and foxy tunes to get everyone in the mood as people began to get energized!

Our ‘Blindfold your way to love’ game proved to be a great way to meet people as the brave souls dared to go in the first round. We sneakily listened in and heard some amazing questions including ‘If you could be a fruit what would you be?’, being blind seemed to add a new edge to the dating as we had to hurry couples along as 2 minutes just wasn’t long enough! Successful couples were revealed to each other by our DV8 cupids and were introduced by the bar with a free drink prize! The cupids continuously worked their magic throughout the night and mingled with the singles and tried to find matches, we are sure we are responsible for at least a few first dates!

Everyone enjoyed the light-hearted atmosphere and had a great sense of humour about it all. Our ‘Question your fancy’ game also provided matches throughout the night as the cupids announced the couples who had the most in common. We thoroughly enjoyed our first flirting event and it was a fantastic chance to see some new faces and test our flirting skills! We fully expect to be invited to the weddings of our successful matches! DV8 OXFORD \\\ NOVEMBER 2010

T

he nationwide search for the next Miss Great Britain came to Oxford this month with the Miss Oxfordshire heat hosted by Oxfords one and only Lave & Ignite.

Thirteen stunning girls took to the runway, DV8 enjoyed watching them strut their stuff in a series of amazing outfits. The competition kicked off with the swimsuit round (always a favourite with us, but notable by the absence of bikinis which have been banned in favour of the sexy one-piece this year!). The second round was the evening gown round; each girl wore a fantastic floor length dress, wowing the judges and the audience with their mega watt smiles! The contestants were then interviewed giving us a chance to learn more about a pageant girl’s ambition, which ranged from being a qualified pilot to charity fundraising and even running their own businesses. Beautiful actress Alice Christian was picked to represent the county. Not only impressing judges with her looks but also with how her travels have inspired her to help others.

The Miss Great Britain competition has hit the headlines in recent years, Danielle Lloyd was infamously stripped of her Miss GB title after posing naked in playboy in 2006 and there have been recent age rows.

Owner Liz Fuller hopes to place Miss Great Britain firmly back in the hearts of the British public, explaining that the competition is about finding ‘articulate, ambitious, intelligent, girls that are beautiful inside and out’. She plans to modernise the structure of the competition and has allowed divorcees and single mothers to compete for the first time.

BACK TO SCHOOL @ THE PLUSH LOUNGE

W

alking into The Plush Lounge on Park End Street is a little like taking a nostalgic stroll back to the 80’s. With gigantic glittering mirror balls, black marble columns and neon lighting aplenty it has a brilliant retro dancehall feel and definitely sets the bar as Oxford’s only gay club. With the lights down low and the mirror balls twinkling like the stars The Plush Lounge throbs with it’s own heartbeat as partygoers dance until the early hours to some great house and cheesy tunes. The resident DJ’s excite the crowds with their brilliant sets and the dancers turn out in force (apart from when Britney Spears is played!).

With lush, weathered, sofas hiding in darkened corners, and art deco tables juxtaposed with green neon highlights, groups of merrymakers can watch the scene from the sidelines as Oxford’s coolest kids strut on by or dance each other down on the mirrored dance floor. On Saturday nights Plush has some awesome live acts including Madonna and Lady Gaga impersonators, cheered on by hordes of the new-elite of Oxford who chant for more. It’s easy to see why Plush is such a popular night out with it’s reasonably priced drinks and mardi gras atmosphere and every night out captured and put on their Facebook by the regular photographer. So looking to go out with a group of friends and want a guarenteed great night out? Then dress to impress and scooch on down to Plush and fight your way to the bar!

hen we heard that there was going to be a U.V. Bubble party at Wahoo, DV8 were first in the queue! Wahoo has fast become the place to go for a midweek party in Oxford, with great drinks prices and the fantastic D.J. Oliver East. There was loads of UV paint and neon clothing (think classic rave circa 1990’s). Our favourite was the bubble machine, blowing loads of bubbles onto the packed dance floor, to the delight of the revellers. This was a great night! Be sure to check out Wahoo if you fancy a night out with a difference, there is always a good time to be had here.

15 MINUTE CLUB @ LIVING ROOM

I

ts so true that you can have a lot of fun in 15 minutes, and DV8 went along to the Living Room to be pleasured by their weekly Sunday night offering.

The premise is simple, each artist is given 15 minutes to serenade you with their vocals and instruments whether that be a piano or guitar. The music covered was a good mix of the artists own work as well as some classic covers. This made for a fantastic relaxing sunday night. We here are DV8 are definitely looking forward to more 15 minutes of music pleasure.

fraid of the dark? You should be! This Halloween DV8 unleashed a plague of all-out ghoulish fun at Kukui’s fantastic fright-fest event Passport to Hell!!!

The club was packed with fantastically terrifying costumes from sexy devils, through to horror film icons and the cast of Mortal Kombat! Everyone made a huge effort to get into the Halloween fancy-dress swing. Kukui pulled out all the stops, amazing us with their spooky underworld decorations, halloween themed cocktails and spectacularly horrifying but wildly entertaining floorshow in the form of a live autopsy (don’t worry no people were actually hurt in this production!). It was a unique and slightly eerie experience, which went down brilliantly with the crowd.

For those of you who like to party in style Kukui remains one of the best places to go on a Saturday night. DV8 enjoyed our Halloween passport to hell, although we think we are looking forward to going back to paradise...

oppongi in the short time it has been on the Oxford night scene has fast became one of the places to be seen in Oxford. Imagine DV8's delight when we bumped into Calum Best Partying at the sexy chic lounge bar and club. The man whose infamous reputation definitely precedes him as a major player on the party scene, not to mention being a bit of a ladies man!! His presence definitely attracted a lot of attention from the sexy ladies partying in the club. It was really great to meet him, he really is a charming guy.

The night brought together a great mix of good music, great looking people and tempting cocktails, not to mention the chance to get papped with Calum. It was a combination that set up for a fantastic night of dancing and partying. No wonder the night on a Saturday is called VIP Saturdays, it's everything a Saturday night should be. We wonder who will be the next celeb to party at Roppongi? If your a fan of 'The only way is Essex' watch this space...

MUSIC & FILM RELEASES

MESSY LITTLE RAINDROPS - CHERYL COLE 1st November The nation’s darling brings out her second album, adorably named ‘Messy Little Raindrops’, and we can pretty much guarantee its going to be a smash! The lead single ‘Promise This’ a gloriously catch number, will surely set the charts alight, and collaborations with Will.i.am and Wayne Wilkins (who produced her debut hit Fight For This Love) ensure the Geordie Beauty a massive success.

STRIP ME - NATASHA BEDINGFIELD 9th November The lady with one of the most unique, incredible voices around today is back, with her third studio album ‘Strip Me’. Loyal fans will not be disappointed - her gifts as a singer and songwriter continue to reflect that magic spark that catapulted her to being the first British female artist in twenty years to score a no.1 on the U.S. Billboard pop chart with her first smash hit ‘Unwritten.’ Fabulous!

THE BEGINNING – BLACK EYED PEAS 30th November Arguably the world’s coolest, hippest and funkiest band, Fergie, Will.i.am and the gang follow-up their multiplatinum ‘The E.N.D.’ with the ironically entitled ‘The Beginning’. “It symbolises growth, new beginnings and fresh, new perspective,” Will.i.am said. Ooh we can’t wait! But will there be songs as irresistibly catchy as their smash ‘I Gotta Feeling’? We’ve got a strong feeling there will be!

DV8 OXFORD /// NOVEMBER 2010

DUE DATE November 5th Robert Downey Jr stars alongside the hilarious Zach Galifianakis in this comedy about a father who has to hitchhike a ride to make the birth of his child. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 - November 19th Voldemort's power is growing stronger... what’s in store for Harry, Ron and Hermione? THE AMERICAN November 26th An assassin hides out in Italy for one last assignment. George Clooney makes a return to form! MACHETE November 26th After being betrayed by the organisation who hired him, an ex-Federale launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss.

SOPHIE.B

Despite the nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, I’ve started cycling to work. Call me crazy, but it’s quicker getting home through Summertown on a bike than in a car most days. Plus with a wedding dress to buy this month, the pressure is on to slim those thighs!

Cycling in for the breakfast show at 6.30am though, has made me notice something pretty bad about Oxford cyclists: they seem to hate helmets. True, when we were 14 and doing cycling proficiency, a helmet seemed like the most uncool thing in the world. But now you’re all grown up, what’s cooler if you come off your bike – protecting your head or seeing your skull splattered across a pavement or car bonnet? I know the answer.

Even in the pitch dark, most of the cyclists I pass are bare headed, dressed in black with no reflective strips – some of them don’t even have lights. They must know as well as I do how many idiots there are on the roads generally, often in Oxfordshire bike accidents happen in broad daylight, when people aren’t dozy from their alarms. There are some great accessories around these days and Oxford has a multitude of great cycle shops with really cool gear and friendly, helpful staff – Walton Street Cycles and Summertown Cycles are two within walking distance of my house.

So if you cycle and recognise yourself from my description above, go and have a look. It won’t hurt (even if it did, it would hurt a lot less than being hit by a car) and it could save you from a nasty accident as we head deeper into winter. Go on… get a life! You can catch Sophie weekday mornings from 7am hosting The Wake Up on Oxford’s FM107.9

CULINARY DELIGHTS

37 George Street, Oxford, Tel: 01865 250 708

DV8 were invited to O’Neill’s on George Street to sample their fantastic new food menu. We were promised some traditional Irish hospitality, and we definitely weren’t disappointed! On arrival we were met by the warm welcoming tones of a live acoustic duo playing traditional Irish music, this created a lovely setting for a relaxing bite to eat with friends. We were really fortunate to sample all the different dishes that O’Neill’s is proud to offer. The manager Ian spoke with us about the new menu and the ethos behind sourcing the best quality food from Ireland.

This was evident when it came to the delicious, succulent, straight-from-the-grill taste. We all agree that the traditional high street chain pub is rarely something to shout about, but we were delighted by the quality of the food in O’Neill’s, not to mention the friendliness of the staff. We really felt welcome, and their knowledge of the food and drinks available was fantastic. After all this sampling what would we recommend? Well, its a hard choice, but the Ribeye topped with Ceshel blue cheese and mushroom... Just writing about it makes us want to go back for more!

CAFE COCO Park End Street, Oxford, Tel: 01865 248432

Café Coco is one of the most well known café/bars in Oxford, famous for their Parisian chic decor, random (and slightly frightening) sculptures but most importantly their fantastic food and cocktail menu. DV8 went along to their new addition in the centre of town at the bottom of the Royal Oxford Hotel to try out the delicious pizzas they offer (currently with some fantastic daytime food offers). We started with the classic garlic bread and mozzarella, it made a nice sharing plate before our main course of Merguez & Tzatziki pizza, this pizza had a topping of spicy beef & lamb

sausage, spinach, onions, peppers, garlic, mozzarella & cooling tzatziki. We also opted for Clives Spinach and Mozzerella Calzone, a dish that is dedicated to the memory of a greatly missed customer Clive Tulip. If you order this dish £1 is donated to the British Heart Foundation, not only was it delicious, but we also felt good for helping out a worthwhile charity. Coco’s guarantees a relaxing yet lively atmosphere and is the perfect place for a casual dinner with friends in pleasant surroundings. Be sure to check this out next time you are in the area.

COCKTAILS OF THE MONTH @ THE LIVING ROOM Castle Complex, Oxford JAGWA JUICE

Ingredients: Vodka Midori Agwa Lemon Sugar Dash of orange bitters This delicious cocktail is a treat for people who like their drinks with a sour kick (although you can order it sweeter).

LOCH FYNE 55 Walton Street, Oxford, Tel: 01865 292510 BAR TENDER OF THE MONTH LIVING ROOM’S TOM JOHNSON How long have you worked in the Living Room? Three and a Half years. Can you flair? Yes. I can spin a bottle or two, although am looking to learn some more skills. What is your signature drink? Jagwa Juice this is one I have made up myself (check out the cocktail of the month). How many cocktails do you offer? 50 plus. What is your favourite thing about working in the Living Room? The staff and the customers, its a great atmosphere everyday of the week. The Living Room, The Castle Complex, Oxford

DV8 loves seafood, so when it comes to fish Loch Fyne in Walton Street is the obvious choice for us. On a cold, damp, autumn evening, the bright contemporary welcome of the wood and red brick clad restaurant was very appealing. The menu offers something to suite all tastes so no need for non-fish lovers to miss out; the only problem is deciding what to have from the extensive menu. We felt duty bound to try some of Loch Fyne’s famous oysters, these did not disappoint, arriving beautifully presented on crushed ice with a choice of dressings. We went with the highly recommended topping

of lemon, coriander and hot sauce! We had additional starters of Scottish Smoked Beef Salad with Pancetta and Horseradish and a delicious Lobster Bisque. To follow we went for the super fresh Poached Lock Fyne Smoked Haddock with Spinach, Peas and Mash with a Creamy Wholegrain Mustard Sauce, but the award winner went to the king prawns, cooked in garlic with a lemon mayo and house cut chips, it truly was finger licking good! Finally, the desert board... Sticky Toffee Pudding! Need we say more? Loch Fyne is another brilliant reason to visit the hip Jerricho area.

SPARKLING NUVO

Sparkling Nuvo is the latest and most fabulous of the pink drinks on the market for women! Billed as the World's First Sparkling Liqueur, Nuvo L'esprit de Paris is a gorgeous drink made up of ultrapremium vodka from France and sparkling French wine infused with natural passionfruit nectar... sounds scrummy! Packaged in a perfume-like bottle, which adds instant style and glamour to any drinks collection, Sparkling Nuvo will dazzle your tastebuds and delight every woman’s girly side! Try a Sparkling Nuvo Cosmopolitan for a fabulous alternative... the possibilities are endless!

MARMITE FLAVOURED...EVERYTHING!

The ‘You either love it or hate it’ phrase has never been more apt... Marmite simply has the power to divide the nation! Some people will not just want to eat it, they will happily bathe in it, wallow in it like a hippo in mud, slather themselves from head to toe and wrap themselves in bread and butter, whereas other would rather be stripped naked in public. You get the picture! For all the lovers out there, Marmite is now not simply a spread for your toast, oh no. The wonder food has been added to some yummy savoury (and sweet!) snacks, purely for your

enjoyment! You can now purchase (from all Marmite loving retailers) Marmite crisps, Marmite, cashews, Marmite cheddar bites, Marmite breadsticks, Marmite Cereal bars, Marmite ricecakes and now even Marmite chocolate - entitled Very Peculiar! Aptly named, many would agree. And if you haven’t tried Marmite XO, an extra strong version of the classic, make sure you do extra tangy and tasty, and generally just extra-Marmitey! Find Marmite products in all major retailers. Love it or hate it, you can’t escape it!

Hot off the fashion press has to be J.W Anderson (Jonathan Anderson) the new label creating a buzz among the fashion sets.
