Honoring Our Daughter by Creating Change

W

ith this issue, we want to honor our daughter Kristi who died twelve years ago in an auto accident. She was the catalyst that started us on

this soul journey and brought so much light into our lives. As we look back on the past twelve years, we marvel at where we were and at where we have come to be. The journey is not yet finished, but there is more joy in our hearts and we are confidently moving forward, knowing that Kristi is guiding us and smiling down on us always. From the very beginning we have honored Kristi’s passing by hosting the Kristi Visocky Memorial Golf Tournament, the largest golf tournament in Northern Colorado, and Kristi’s Big Night Out event. (The absolute best party of the summer!) Since its inception in 2003, with the help and support of an amazing community, the Foundation has awarded $200,000 in scholarships to 90 area young women, $100,000 to build a house for Habitat for Humanity and over $100,000 in support to area organizations. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go to support Fort Collins SAVA Sexual Assault Victims Advocacy program. We want to help create a community without sexual violence. If you cannot imagine what that looks like, you are not alone. But together, we can help make that vision a reality. Funds raised at the

tournament will be used to support middle school programs that educate students about sexual violence and its consequences. The goal is to change the culture around sexual violence. This year’s festivities include Kristi’s Big Night Out Party on Friday, July 24 at the Fort Collins Senior Center. Theme for this year’s event is Caddyshack and

with a scramble-format tournament that includes prizes, a steak lunch and the “Ugly Pants” contest. Whether you’re a pro or just a duffer, it’s definitely a great time, and you don’t have to be good to participate, so no excuses. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and volunteers are needed for both events. For more information and to register for the golf tournament and Kristi’s Big Night Out, go to www.KristisFund.com or call Bob Visocky at 970-219-3297.

Bring Back the Butterflies More and more butterflies are becoming endangered as they fall prey to pesticides and as more open spaces are lost to development, yet they play a critical role in maintaining the health of our environment. Not only do they help pollinate, but they provide food for other animals. Here’s what you can do to help bring butterflies back: • Garden for wildlife. Grow plants that butterfly caterpillars like to eat. These may be plants that are native to your region. They’ll attract native butterflies as well. • Choose nectar-rich plants. Fill your garden not only with plants that caterpillars will eat, but also with those from which butterflies can drink. • Build a house. If your yard doesn’t provide enough dense foliage to allow butterflies to hibernate and nest, build them a box they can use that offers protection from predators and harsh weather. The interior walls of the box should be rough enough to allow butterflies to grab a foothold. Scatter small twigs and leaves inside to promote hibernation and egg laying, and include thin vertical slats on the front to allow the butterflies to enter and exit. Make sure the box is hung no more than four feet above the ground and has a south or southwest exposure. • Put out some water. A shallow dish or birdbath will provide the moisture butterflies need to thrive. In all cases, consult your local gardening center for the best planting recommendations for the area in which you live. Source: earthshare.org

Respect the Great Outdoors As you venture out to camp this summer, keep in mind some tips for respecting the Great Outdoors. • Stay on the right paths. Get established trail maps from the visitor center before you settle in. Cutting switchbacks tramples vegetation and leads to soil erosion. • Minimize your impact on your campsite. Select a site that has already been used to eliminate further expansion of the camp. And leave the campsite in as natural a state as possible. • Follow the Golden Rule for camping and hiking. “Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints.” • Choose the right equipment. Heavy, lug-soled boots can destroy fragile terrain. Consider wearing a pair of light boots or well-cushioned running shoes whenever it is safe and conditions permit. • Don’t litter. Pick up litter that you find. Carry out or burn all of your own garbage. • Wash yourself, your dishes and your clothes at least 100 feet away from rivers, streams, lakes or ponds. When using any soap to wash or brushing your teeth, do it away from natural water sources and pour it into highly absorbent ground. • Make note of fire danger and follow the rules. Check to make sure fires are permitted when camping. If you are permitted to build a fire, keep it small. Use only dead wood you find already on the ground, and at the end of the night, make sure your ashes are cool. Seek a park ranger’s advice if you have any concerns or problems with building your fire. Source: earthshare.org

Abandoned Pets Give Veterans Help A non-profit group out of Los Angeles called Pets for Vets has begun a program giving abandoned dogs to veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A recent study found almost twenty percent of service men and women return to the United States with PTSD and have trouble adjusting to civilian life. Many become depressed and don’t know how to tell people what they went through. However, with the Pets for Vets program the dogs are given a second chance at life (most of these animals would be euthanized) and the soldiers are given a new outlook. Workers say they have seen immediate results in all of the soldiers who have partaken in the program, and many are now depression free. The group is hoping to expand to cities outside of LA. thedailyupbeat.com

Mozart Saves Babies Lives Hundreds of Years after Own Death Researchers at the Tel Aviv Medical Center in Israel have discovered premature babies that listen to Mozart actually grow stronger faster and have a better chance of survival. This isn’t a strange phenomenon, but the music, when played for an extended period of time (at least 30 minutes) calms the child down. Because the child is not expelling extra energy, the nutrients the baby intakes turns to fat, allowing the child to grow faster. The researchers only tested out Mozart, so it’s hard to tell if The Black Eyed Peas or Lada Gaga would have the same effect. thedailyupbeat.com

Growing Gardens of Boulder Helps Lyons Plant It Forward with Plant Donations Growing Gardens, a Boulder, Colorado non-profit dedicated to cultivating community through sustainable urban agriculture, donated over 700 plants to Lyons, Colorado Garden Club’s “Garden to Garden Plant Distribution” event in an effort to help restore the town’s community areas and residents’ homes and gardens. Each year, after their Community Plant Sales close for the season, Growing Gardens donates over 6,000 plants including vegetables, herbs, lettuces, annuals and perennials to help low income Boulder County residents grow their own food and beautify their homes. Johanna Zinn, member of the Lyons Garden Club, was shopping at the Growing Gardens Community Plant Sales in May and asked a volunteer, “What does Growing Gardens do with all the unsold plants?” A few days later, three truckloads of organic tomato starts, squashes, lettuces, herbs, annuals and perennials made their way to Lyons for the plant giveaway. After the flood that destroyed much of Lyons in September 2013, the town’s common areas and residents’ vegetable gardens were washed away. The Lyons Garden Club is working to restore these areas, and in the process, helping residents from both Lyons and Jamestown to replant their home gardens. www.lyonsgardenclub.org www.GrowingGardens.org

SUNSCREEN

Beauty

Don’t Leave Home Without It… Mary Barghelame

S

ummer is definitely one of the most beautiful times of year in Colorado. Bright, warm, sunny days beckon us to enjoy the outdoors with walks, sports, relaxation and so many other wonderful activities. But all that sunshine can take a toll on our skin. Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light causes the fibers in the skin to break down causing sagging and more. Both UVA and UVB can damage and age the skin. Furthermore, one in five Americans will get skin cancer at some time in their life.

What’s the number one key to enjoying the summer sun? SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN. Protection from both UVA and UVB is critical; it’s important to read the labels on your sunscreen to be sure it covers both types of sun exposure. There are two main types of sunscreen: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb

the sun’s rays to protect the skin. These are not normally recommended for children or those with sensitive skin. Physical sunscreens (zinc or titanium oxide) are better tolerated by most people. It’s not only important to apply a generous amount of sunscreen, it needs to be reapplied frequently, especially after sports, sweating or swimming. A broadbrimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses are also protective.

What can you do for your summer skin? How about a relaxing facial? During the summer months, adding back moisture rejuvenates and restores balance to the skin. Here are three of my favorites: O2 Facial A luxurious treatment that infuses oxygen, plant derived stem cells, peptides and a high concentration of enzymatic botanicals into the skin, leaving it luminous, refreshed and rejuvenated. Ormedic Treatment A nourishing blend of pumpkin,

pineapple, papaya and mango fruit enzymes and peptides in an organic Aloe Vera gel helps rebalance, rejuvenate and restore skin. White comfrey plant stem cells recharge your skin’s cells and help maintain youthfulness. Stem Cell Facial This relaxing treatment rejuvenates, regenerates and revitalizes dull aging skin. Formulated with multiple plantderived stem cells, powerful peptides and natural botanicals, it restores youth and radiance. Each of these facials offers a relaxing experience, while providing a unique treatment for your skin. Is LED Light Therapy

the Medicine of the Future? Jill Holly

“We are born of light, we live in light, we die in light. Everything is made of light. Science has come to this understanding by a very long route.” — Osho

In ancient times sunlight was used as part of medicine on a regular basis by the Assyrians, Babylonians and Egyptians who all practiced therapeutic sun-bathing.

I

t used to be that we were connected to light through nature. Now we no longer spend our daytime hours outside, we wear sunscreen, enjoy UV-protected windows and polarized sunglasses, protecting ourselves not from the sun, but the harmful effects present from the sun due to our environmental changes. Our bodies are living photocells. The eyes are entry points through which light has profound effects on the regulation of human physiological and emotional functioning and the development of our consciousness. Recent studies have shown that our cells and DNA communicate with light, a process termed biophoton communication. The pineal gland is the body’s light meter, assisting us in becoming synchronized with nature. Over 600 biological processes are dependent on light, often described as circadian rhythms. Light therapy sounds like a new thing, but it actually is not. In ancient times sunlight was used as part of medicine on a regular basis by

the Assyrians, Babylonians and Egyptians who all practiced therapeutic sun-bathing. The Greek city of Heliopolis (which means ‘City of the Sun’) was renowned for its healing temples and light rooms. Skip forward to the 1880’s when blue light was used to stimulate secretory glands and the nervous system, and found to be very effective in treating a variety of diseases, especially those diseases accompanied by pain. In 1903 a Nobel Prize was awarded to Neils Ryberg Finsen for his work in red-light therapy and healing smallpox and lupus. Since then, light therapy has been the subject of over 4,000 independent studies, from institutions including NASA’s Space Program, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, The National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Health and The Mayo Clinic just to name a few. Light therapy is currently used in numerous hospitals and is being studied for its anti-viral and antibacterial qualities for MRSA, Ebola and more. Light energy is a non-intrusive, very powerful modality that

encompasses energetic wellness. Studies have shown that over 95 percent of all diseases are due to stress. Light energy nourishes, tunes and creates an optimal environment to support the body’s natural ability to heal. Red, blue and infrared light have been shown to promote at least 24 positive changes at the cellular level. Clinical studies have shown that light therapy can increase energy, stimulate collagen, ATP and nitric oxide, and reduce pain, inflammation and stress.

Thus, LED Light Therapy is born. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are a form of light energy that is gaining popularity due to the relatively recent growth of the laser industry. Lasers are being used in medicine all over the world for pain, inflammation, cosmetic enhancements and more. LEDs are similar to lasers in that they offer the same effects but differ in the way that the light energy is delivered. LED disperses light (red, blue or infrared) over a greater surface area; this tends to result in shorter session times for a given area. Light therapy donates light photons to cells that need energy. Those photons increase the production of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, by up to 150 percent. ATP governs 80 to 90 percent of the cells’ activities. Light ignites the cellular metabolism and energizes cell membranes so that nutrients can better nourish cells and help them thrive. LEDs act on hemoglobin in the blood to release nitric oxide. Named “Molecule of the Year” in 1992, nitric oxide causes the dilation of blood vessels to increase circulation and delivery of oxygen to tissues. Increased circulation and oxygen helps heal damaged tissues. Nitric oxide also acts on nerves to decrease or eliminate pain. In 1998, three scientists were awarded a Nobel Prize

for their research on nitric oxide in the body. The work is only beginning, but nitric oxide appears to be key in many processes of the body. In fact, The Cardiovascular Cure: How to Strengthen Your Self-defense Against Heart Attack and Stroke by John P Cooke and Judith Fuller, claims “Most Americans are not producing enough nitric oxide in their blood vessels.”

What if you could enhance LED Light Therapy by pulsing light with frequencies? “Sickness results when cells, molecules or particles of matter are out of their normal resonance or vibratory pattern. By repeatedly exposing damaged tissue to the normal resonance frequencies associated with that tissue, healing often occurs, sometimes quite rapidly.” — Dr. Paul Nogier, French Neurologist

hertz. A healthy body frequency is 62-72 hertz. When the frequency drops, the immune system is compromised. According to Dr. Royal R. Rife, author of The Cancer Cure That Worked, every disease has a frequency. He found that certain frequencies can prevent the development of disease and that others destroy disease. Substances with higher frequency will destroy diseases of lower frequency. The study of frequencies raises an important question concerning the frequencies of substances we eat, breathe and absorb. LED Therapy that incorporates certain frequencies can target specific tissue and cell groups as well as body systems to tailor the session to the specific needs of the client. LED therapy can support the mind and body’s ability to shift from the stress and tension to a relaxed,

Light energy nourishes, tunes and creates an optimal environment to support the body’s natural ability to heal. Perhaps known mostly for his groundbreaking work in acupuncture, Dr. Paul Nogier identified seven frequencies natural to our bodies. His research showed that the application of these frequencies could help bring organs and tissues back to their healthy resonant frequency. A resonant frequency refers to the natural frequency with which our body cells vibrate. Cells are considered to have the ability to speed up their particular resonant frequency when they are exposed to a range of healthy frequencies that includes their particular natural healthy frequency. It has been determined that the average frequency of the human body during the daytime is 62-68

balanced state. This provides the support needed for healing. Light vibrates through cellular structure, through the energetic and spiritual layers, the emotional and the physical for quantum health. Used on a regular basis, light can become the most important practice to creating, maintaining, and thriving in optimal physical and emotional health. “We are all light deficient and this deficiency may be the source of our physical and emotional problems.” — Dr. John Ott, Light Therapy Pioneer Jill Holly is a LED Light Practitioner in Fort Collins. Leaky Gut? Try Meat Stock (It’s better than bone broth to heal it.) Monica Corrado

Q

uite a craze has hit the nation in recent months: bone broth has been touted by doctors, nutritionists and athletes as a great tonic for healing a leaky gut. Bone broth bars have sprung up in New York City, Portland, and in cities in between. Is it true? Does bone broth heal a leaky gut? What’s a leaky gut anyway? And why should you care?

What is a “leaky gut”? A “leaky gut” is an injured gut. The term is specific to the duodenum of the small intestine. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine into which the stomach dumps its high acid mixture for further digestion and absorption. (Note that the small intestine digests everything you eat that is not the protein broken

into the bloodstream, which can cause havoc to brain function, starve the body, trigger chronic symptoms, and eventually lead to autoimmune disorders.

Who has a leaky gut? The symptoms tell the tale. If you have any of the following symptoms, many can be traced to a gut that is leaking: food sensitivities, seasonal allergies, auto-immune disorders including autoimmune thyroid, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, Lyme disease, vitiligo (and about 80 others); brain fog, brain functioning and focusing disorders such as ADD, ADHD, SPD, OCD, autism spectrum disorders, depression, dyslexia, dyspraxia,

Meat stock provides the gelatin needed to heal that gut lining. down in the stomach.) If the duodenum is damaged, it cannot digest your food nor absorb the nutrients in it. If it has holes in it, it is termed “leaky.” That’s because it leaks into your bloodstream, which is the transportation system of the body. Large molecules and toxins leak

eczema, IBS, colitis, and more. If all of that is probable with a leaky gut, why not heal it? Can it be healed? Yes! No drugs or invasive therapies required. Food, folks. We heal the gut with food. Avoiding some foods and consuming others. As previously mentioned, bone

broth made from bones that have been cooked for a long time has gained center stage. Bone broth has been touted recently as the traditional remedy that can heal a leaky gut and all the symptoms caused by it. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Bone broth does not heal the lining of the small intestine. Its cousin, meat stock, does.

The Secret Ingredient: Gelatin The most important ingredient to heal a gut with holes in it is gelatin. Not that FDC red dye #5 stuff served in hospital cafeterias, but gelatin from bones. Once folks grasped this fact, individuals — and companies, now — started boiling big pots of bones for long periods of time, and serving, selling and drinking bone broth. While the premise was correct, the execution failed. Gelatin is the healing balm, but not gelatin from bone broth, nor from bones that are cooked long, sometimes for 24-72 hours. In fact, bone broth can be toxic to the brain if the brain membranes are leaky. (If your gut lining is leaky, your brain membranes are also likely to be leaky. If you have brain focusing/function issues, chances are they are leaky.) Consuming bone broth when you have leaky brain

membranes can trigger seizures if you are prone to seizures! (http://www.biodynamicwellness.com/stock-vs-broth-confused/)

Meat Stock to the Rescue! Meat stock provides the gelatin needed to heal that gut lining. I call it a “cousin” to bone broth because it too is made from bones and provides gelatin. What it does not provide is the high level of free glutamate found in bone broth that is cooked for a long period of time. (Like MSG, the glutamate is the trigger for the neurological symptoms.) Meat stock is made from meaty bones cooked for a very short period of time: 1.5 to 2 hours for chicken, and 4 to 8 hours for beef, bison or lamb. It provides the gelatin required to heal your leaky gut. For the whole nutritional protocol for healing a leaky gut, read Gut and Psychology Syndrome, by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Alzheimer’s as a Way of Living More Than

One Life Experience Within a Lifetime Megan Carnarius

I believe the soul is whole and intact and busy gathering experiences, learning from this additional toil at the end of life.

In this edited excerpt from her book Megan Carnarius advocates for a new perspective of Alzheimer’s disease and finds something positive in the diagnosis for both the patient and their loved ones…..

Excerpt from A Deeper Perspective on Alzheimer’s and other Dementias: Practical Tools with Spiritual Insights by Megan Carnarius, RN, NHA, LMT

L

et me introduce you to a few exceptional individuals. C. completed her doctorate in Divinity at age 66. L. ran his own business successfully for many years and had degrees in Mathematics, Music, and Law. R. was a brilliant physicist and hung out most of his career with Nobel Laureates. J. was a marathon runner and emeritus professor at two leading universities. D. helped create DOS for computers. W. was a top cancer surgeon. I have had the good fortune in my nursing career to work with geniuses, linguists, deans, doctors, philosophers, creative thinkers, and artists. They were individuals who had reached incredible personal heights in their careers and their lives, and were either schooled in the traditional way or in the school of hard knocks. All have Alzheimer’s or other dementias in common, so clearly this does not support the findings that we can avoid dementia by exercising our brains. These folks were using every extra neural pathway possible. What does this mean? It raises some interesting questions. Most people recognize President Ronald Reagan’s name and know his story. This man had a long and successful career in the public eye, from acting to politics, and made a contribution to the field of Alzheimer’s disease by letting the nation know he was afflicted with it. Prior to this, several other celebrities had acknowledged that they suffered from it, but it was Ronald Reagan who made the biggest impact. Early in 1990, in my capacity as a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association, I was asked to host a booth at a local health fair, an annual event attended by hundreds of people. Other organizations were set up nearby — the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Association, an audiologist, and so on — and I brought balloons and flowers and had a festive-looking table with fliers and handouts. Let me tell you what happened. I stood there for seven hours cheerfully greeting people as they passed, but everyone was giving my table a wide berth, as if walking close to it would somehow put them at risk for “catching” Alzheimer’s. Only four people actually approached my table all day. The first said, “Oh, my God! What a horrible disease!” and quickly moved on to the next table. The next said, “I know I have it. I can’t remember names,” and when I asked if she had ever been able to remember names, she said “NO, but I know I have it!” and quickly rushed on. The other two people actually had a loved ALZHEIMER’S cont. on page 16 www.BellaSparkMagazine.com • July/August 2015 • BellaSpark

one with the disease whom they were caring for and were already in contact with the Alzheimer’s Association. At the end of the day, I was feeling somewhat dejected as I was putting my items away, when a woman approached me from the American Cancer Association table. She said, “Don’t worry. They all used to treat us and our booth that way. People were very afraid of even saying the word ‘cancer.’ They thought it was a death sentence, and when someone got diagnosed they often wouldn’t tell anyone except the closest person to them — not their children, not coworkers. Now people are not as afraid and realize there can be success stories. Maybe, someday, that will happen with Alzheimer’s, too.” When Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, people knew the breadth of the life he had led and, with occasional updates from his wife, followed his illness.

Nancy Reagan also published a book about their love story and some of the daily notes he had written her throughout their marriage. But what happens sometimes when an individual gets the diagnosis is that there is a feeling of shame and dismissal. “Oh, that is such a shame. They had such a great life.” It almost sounds as if the life were wasted because it ended like this. When it comes to dying, some people fantasize about going to bed and putting their slippers neatly together, pulling the covers up, and just not waking up the next morning. Other folks fantasize about doing something they love, then falling over dead. It might be startling to the rest of the people involved in whatever activity it is, but often mourners come to the conclusion that this is also a great way to go. Other individuals live one kind of extreme life and then, through some kind of accident or injury, experience the opposite extreme: for example, Olympic athletes at the peak of their

physical abilities or NFL football players who suddenly become paralyzed or years later suffer dementia. When someone takes the experience by the horns and fully engage it instead of avoiding it, something fundamentally shifts in our perception of the situation and also typically how the person will speak about it. They are not a victim anymore. They are able to say honestly, “Yes, I wished this never happened, but I am now aware of. . .” Or, “I understand this...” Or, “I believe this... and would not have had these insights had I not had these experiences.” I believe it is easier for us to see the blessings in certain situations with positive outcomes, as in cases when an individual comes into this life and it is quickly apparent they have certain gifts and talents, attributes which the circumstances they are born into also nurture. An example of this would be footballer John Elway. He was born into a family that loved football, and his father was a football coach. By the time Elway was two, he was throwing balls with uncanny accuracy, and his mother remarked that even as a child, he could hit anything they identified as a target. This skill kept growing, and as his life unfolded, he became one of the most renowned NFL quarterbacks of our time. Some people are child prodigies whose stories have come down to us through history, such as Mozart. We wonder, how was it possible that this young boy had complete sonatas rolling off his fingers at the age of 13? In these examples, it is easy to find ourselves saying, “He was destined to do this.” In conventional thinking, when someone’s life has reached a pinnacle and then something happens to make it go completely in an opposite direction, we tend to judge their life as a failure. What I see, though, is the totality of a life experience — everything that happens is part of

our life history, not just selected pieces. It may represent a deeper desire at the level of the soul that with our limited perspective, we cannot understand. Because the Alzheimer’s journey renders the person unable to communicate their internal experience, it is viewed as wasted time — indeed, to all outward appearances, Alzheimer’s seems to consist of accumulating losses and the inability to function in line with “normal” realities. But what if this is a rich, deeply meaningful period in the person’s life and their understanding of their innermost aspect of themselves? What if it is part of a larger plan, their destiny? What if they are not a victim? What if their essence has been working in this life on the use of mind, the use of the brain, and now they are experiencing vistas and possibilities of this organ that defy description and cannot be conveyed to others? What if the last years of their life are registering on their souls, and that memory has nothing to do with whether they are whole and intact, but experiencing every moment of it, released from their own conventions? No one in their day-to-day consciousness wants Alzheimer’s. That is not what I am suggesting. No one did anything bad to get it, and people diagnosed with the disease are doing the best they can and also wish this were not happening to them. No matter whether you have lived a full and amazing life or a long and modest life, you may still get Alzheimer’s. So what is happening? I believe the soul is whole and intact and busy gathering experiences, learning from this additional toil at the end of life. This is not wasted experience. The soul is busy, busy, busy. This is especially true in situations where there has been excellence in the area of mind or use of the brain. It feels to me that the person is discovering something else by having the experience of opposites. To be very cognitively astute, to use the brain and find self-

definition through the use of mind is very normal. There is also an element of seduction in it. If we are truly authentic, we recognize that our physical package changes over time. We recognize that if we define ourselves according to how we looked at 20 years of age we would spend the rest of our life disappointed. How do we evaluate a life? How

families, had hobbies and interests, volunteered, mentored others, and shared their wisdom and humanity. This brings me back to Ronald Reagan. What was so touching to me after his death was the full state funeral that was held, befitting his status as a former US President, yet in the minds of many members of the public at odds with who he had

No one in their day-to-day consciousness wants Alzheimer’s. do we assess a lifetime and say it was worthy, it was good? As I said earlier, what I hear sometimes in the tone of the statement “Isn’t it a shame he or she got Alzheimer’s” is that the disease has made the person’s whole life null and void. Are we so materialistic that the mind and the brain are thought of as one thing representing the whole person? We don’t feel that way about the heart. We have all these feelings, these emotions, and we say things about our hearts. But typically we don’t feel these emotions are literally in the cellular tissue of our heart. When someone has survived a heart attack, we don’t say, “Oh, what a shame. He was such a loving and kind person,” as if the heart attack stops that kind of emotional expression. Yet our chest swells with feelings, our hearts pound with anxiety or the rush of joy. How can someone have a heart transplant and not be squeamish that all their feelings are going to leave them and the feelings of another are going to invade their system? We know that is foolish. Yet we do not feel that way about our brains, our memories, and the use of our minds. If we need to look for an additional blessing, many individuals with Alzheimer’s attained all the outward hallmarks of success that society expects of us. They grew up, completed schooling, held jobs, had careers, met others they could share dreams and a life with, raised

been in the final decade of his life due to Alzheimer’s disease. Folks who might not have normally thought about it found themselves thinking about what it must have been like for this man who had been involved in so many life experiences yet could no longer consciously recall them. Because people were so familiar with stories about Reagan, this could not be so easily dismissed. It was a breakthrough to have news media ask about the status of Reagan’s dementia in the last years and months, and for the public to engage in a dialogue about this difficult process. It really helped to bring this disease out into the open and not be treated like the leprosy of our time. To have the entire country stop for a moment to observe the passing of a life — a life full of many experiences, including Alzheimer’s — and to have that person honored for the entirety of their life was a final tribute to all people living with Alzheimer’s disease. Spirit

Understanding the Journey Phyllis Light

We are in an intense period of personal and spiritual growth, beginning May, 2012 and continuing through December, 2015. Many people are feeling extremely tired these days. Some are “not feeling like their normal selves” and wondering what’s wrong with them. Many are dealing with a resurgence of old problems and patterns, even ones they thought they had laid to rest many years prior.

Do your best to feed yourself with positive, uplifting thoughts and ideas.

T

here is so much change upon us now — for everyone on the planet — that it’s just too much for many to handle consciously. So our conscious mind often shuts down. Too much input, too many thoughts in our brain, too many feelings to feel... and we get tired. That’s one way to go through this period, shutting down so that we don’t have to deal with all that’s going on inside of us.

18 BellaSpark • July/August 2015 • www.BellaSparkMagazine.com

These changes seem to be forcing us out of our comfort zone. You may go through periods of feeling insecure, like you don’t know what you’re doing, or where you’re headed, or why you’re acting the way you’re acting. It’s as if we are all leaving our old self behind! Like a piece of steel being tempered in the fire, we are being strengthened at a deep level. But all we know here and now is that it’s

hot, and it burns, and we’re not sure why we’re going through this or what’s ultimately going to happen to us. At the end of this period, however, we’re going to come out much stronger and more certain about who we are and what direction our life needs to take.

Have Faith That’s really the best advice at this time. In order to grow as much as possible throughout this period, trust that you are where you need to be and that you are attracting the experiences you need to attract. There is a Divine or Cosmic Plan underlying all that you’re going through, and although it often feels hard, painful, intense, disconcerting or even frightening, there is a purpose to it all. Having faith is about the best way you can stay afloat during this period, when it seems like the ship of your life may be sinking or heading toward disaster. All that is happening in your world is for the higher purpose of growth and the evolution of your Spiritual Self. When you take responsibility for everything that occurs in your life, you get the learning and healing much more quickly. This means letting go of blaming others for your ills, and yourself as well.

Simplify, Breathe, and Let Go Quit pressuring yourself. Find ways to simplify your life, or find avenues to focus on that bring you enjoyment and pleasure. Focus on the “being” side of your nature more than the “doing.” Remember to breathe. Often when we are fearful or anxious, we hold our breath. As you remember to breathe, it helps you to let go of whatever negative emotion feels stuck inside you. Forgive yourself for any hardship or problem you’re having at this time. Do your best to get subconscious support, through clearing or healing techniques, to help you move through this period with as much ease and grace as possible.

The Good News You could have a significant breakthrough at any time during this period. It’s not about “waiting until it’s over” before you can

experience welcome changes in your life. Because there is so much opportunity for healing and transformation, you may already see some changes taking place, even if it’s something happening to you that seems out of your conscious control. As old thoughts and feelings are purged from the subconscious during this period, you have new space within you to be positive and attract different kinds of people, jobs and situations. This is the wonderful, high side of these seemingly turbulent times. Do your best to feed yourself with positive, uplifting thoughts and ideas. Adopt new attitudes of kindness and compassion toward others as well as yourself. Be willing to view things differently so you can see the positive aspects of people and events. It’s truly time to stop beating yourself up and be your own best friend. Make peace with what you consider to be your flaws and be willing to love yourself no matter what. And, continue to be the best expression of who you really are. Phyllis Light, Ph.D., author, and expert in “Telepathic Healing,” helps people release old, negative programming within the subconscious mind and fulfill the highest spiritual purpose of their lives. She has done pioneering subtle energy research on how to protect people from the life-damaging frequencies of our high-tech world. 512-301-2999 or visit: www.lighthealing.com.

The Power of Self-Love Phyllis K. Kennemer

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” — Mark 12:31

W

hen Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” he was telling us to start with self-love. We often ignore that piece of his wise counsel and twist it to mean, love others more than ourselves. That is not what he said. He expected us to love ourselves first. Loving ourselves does not mean that we are vain or egotistical or selfish. It means that we are starting with the basics. If we do not love ourselves, then we are not in a space to love others. If we do not love ourselves, we do not feel worthy of receiving love from others. Dr. Nadine, the founder and healing practitioner of Magnificence Mine (www.MagnificenceMine.com), is dedicated to helping others find the power of self-love. She works with people to heal past hurts and traumas. Dr. Nadine explains that she came to understand the value of self-love as a result of many disturbing and debilitating experiences which began in early childhood and continued into her adult years. As a result of these events, she learned not to trust anyone as she sank deeper and deeper into a state of negativity and self-hatred. A diagnosis of cancer in 2003 awakened Dr. Nadine to the concept of self-love. She believes that physical illnesses originate in emotional traumas. Her trauma resulted in cervical cancer and her surgery in 2004 successfully extracted the power of that negative energy. Dr. Nadine has always known that she is clairvoyant, but she was punished for exhibiting this talent as a child and kept it suppressed. Once she opened to self-love and her own healing, she

embraced her clairvoyance and discovered that she is also a medical intuitive. She is dedicated to helping people connect with their Soul Purposes in life as she aids them in healing. She also offers classes and workshops designed to enable people to take control of their own healing processes. She helps create spaces for people to grow in love, especially self-love, because that is where love must begin.

all the fantastic things your hand can do. Keep moving. Your hand is attached to your arm. You get the idea. After a while you will come to an appreciation of your entire body. Say aloud, “I love my thumb. I love my body!” The next one may be a bit harder for some of us. Stand in front of a mirror. Say, “I love you, (insert your own name). I really, really love you.” Repeat until you really, really believe it.

Suggestions for Developing Self-Love • Live in the moment, expressing gratitude constantly. • Listen to your intuition and be honest with yourself. • Begin each day with writing a list of five things you value about yourself. • Combine exercise with spiritual practices, such as tai chi, yoga, or walking a labyrinth. • Cultivate a sense of humor about yourself and life’s adventures. • Celebrate life all the time, enjoying all of its complexities. Unfortunately, many people, especially women, hate their bodies. They compare themselves unfavorably with skinny models or voluptuous movie stars. By practicing some of Dr. Nadine’s techniques, one can let go of these negative images and build an inner core of self-love. Nadine suggests finding a body part that you love. Perhaps it is your thumb. Concentrate on your thumb and think of all the reasons you love it. Thumbs are part of what makes us human. They help us grasp things; they enable us to type or use keyboards efficiently; they help us express approval or disapproval (thumbs up or thumbs down). Now consider: your thumb is attached to your hand. Think of

Once you have accomplished that you are ready for her third suggestion, shout out to the world, “I love myself. I’m freaking awesome!” Dr. Nadine is part of a growing movement that is spreading the joy of finding love within ourselves and celebrating the unique, fantastic people we are. We can all discover that self-love is the key to happiness. When we truly celebrate ourselves, then we are ready to also, “Love one another.” (John 13:34) Dr. Phyllis K. Remote Viewing:

A deliberate clairvoyant experience Lynette Chilcoat

The ability to see people, places or items clearly with the mind’s eye from afar is a skill inherent in some people. In others, the ability can be developed with persistence and practice.

R

eferred to as remote viewing, it involves the aptitude to be able to see what is happening elsewhere without any technological aid. Simply by using cognitive vision, a person’s intuition can be tapped into. A practitioner can see images of remote targets or hidden objects using the inner third eye, or using psychic impressions of smell, sound or touch. According to Dr. James Burnett of

technique was pursued by the government as a way to potentially zero in on remote targets. Metaphysical phenomena, such as ESP, telekinesis, astral projection, and of course, remote viewing, hold a certain mystical draw, even among mainstream science. There has long existed a symbiotic relationship between the practical, logic-based side of scientific endeavors and the fringe element of the paranormal.

Metaphysical phenomena, such as ESP, telekinesis, astral projection, and of course, remote viewing, hold a certain mystical draw, even among mainstream science. Loveland, a physicist by trade and lifelong natural psychic by circumstance, “Remote viewing is a deliberate clairvoyant experience. It is a way to see not only the present, but also into the future and past.” Dr. Burnett is a master remote viewer, trained by staff of the Stargate Project, which used elements of remote viewing for United States military operations for two decades toward the end of the 20th century. From 1975 to the mid-1990s, the

Burnett initially became involved with the process many years ago at the Esalen Institute in California. “I was trained by two master viewers who had been part of the government program,” said Dr. Burnett. “Basically, they would ask if you could see this target. About half could do it; the others were simply frustrated. It all depended on the degree of natural clairvoyance.” In the case of one of Dr. Burnett’s trials, a photo was placed within a

Dr. James Burnett sealed envelope and then he was asked to identify the image on the print. He drew a striking likeness to the mummified ice man in the picture. “I’ve been studying consciousness for 30 to 40 years and have been involved with psychic things since I was a teen,” continued Dr. Burnett. “The Stargate program was originally funded by the military as a handy way to extract data. Their best success rate was 75 percent but when I did it I experienced a 95 percent success rate.” Dr. Burnett attributes his high degree of positive results to one thing: profound spiritualism. “The government didn’t take into account that a spiritual connection could improve the outcome,” added Dr. Burnett. “For me, spiritual acknowledgement makes all the difference.” According to Dr. Burnett, the universe consists of up to 10 dimensions, but “we live in a threedimensional world. There are astral planes beyond what we usually perceive and holy spirits that live there. In clairvoyant processes, different ways of experiencing our senses are manifested. Each of the

And they like helping people when it is for the greater good of mankind. “Now I choose targets that are for the greatest good of all, such as a historical site or some occasion with peace and love.” Recently, Dr. Burnett presented a course entitled Mastering the Art of Remote Viewing at the Whole Life Center for Spiritual Living in Fort Collins, sponsored by The Society for PSI Research and Education (SPRE). The presentation explored the idea of being able to view a target or the contents of a box halfway around the world. “I taught it because people want to know how remote viewing works and how to practice it on their own,” said Dr. Burnett, of the twohour event. “You have to have your mind working in a particular direction for it to work well. Due to the amount of clairvoyant ability each person possesses, the results will vary. But, it is very good psychic training. However, in the civilian world, once you abandon military

Please give me a successful reading. I ask this for the greatest good of all. And, I give you my love and thanks for your help.

Awakenings

A Return to the Divine Mother Stacie Ivey

For over 5000 years there has been a spiritual longing for our return to inner peace and a deep internal connection to each other and the natural world. Our desire is to feel love intimately, in all its capacity and forms. We want to experience the sacred embrace of the Divine, to live authentically and feel whole. Growing up, we were taught about the masculine side of God, but what about the feminine side? What happened to Her, our Divine Feminine Mother?

As we go through many shifts and changes in our structures and the old ways of thinking, acting and interacting, we are beginning to long for something more.

A

s an adopted child, I have been touched by this question through first the separation and then the reconnection with my biological mother, which brought me to ponder the connection we are all seeking: return to our Divine Mother. Everything is born from the womb of creation and the planet we live on is feminine in nature. As we go through many shifts and changes in our structures and the old ways of thinking, acting and interacting, we are beginning to long for something more. My belief is that what we are truly longing for is our connection to the whole, which includes not only God, but also the greater balance between God and the Goddess. The Goddess is not the mother we were born to, although she may appear that way at

24 BellaSpark • July/August 2015 • www.BellaSparkMagazine.com

times, but rather the Divine Mother of all creation and infinite possibilities. We are all a part of that creation and within it we play different roles. A significant role I chose to play in this precious life is one of an infant who separated from my birthmother and then found her later in life at the age of 27, only to discover two weeks later that I was also pregnant with my first child, a daughter of my own. In one instant, I became connected to my roots in a way that I wasn't before; it was indescribable and beautiful. I believe we all want to feel this connection, not just to the human mother and daughter, but also to the Divine.

I was a child born without my biological tribe and placed in another. There wasn’t the welcoming ceremony I deeply longed for and needed at the moment of my birth: the embrace of and connection to my biological mother. In my transition from my mother’s womb to the physical world, the hospital nurses immediately removed me from my mother. They prevented her from holding me so she wouldn’t get attached and change her mind about the adoption. At that instant, everything that was familiar to me over the course of nine months in my mother’s womb was instantly gone. I lost her scent, the sound of her voice, and the resonant beating of her heart. The wound I experienced was deep and primal. When I left the hospital to begin my life with my adoptive parents, my mother told me I cried continuously for months. My story reminds me of a bigger picture of the rising consciousness that connects us all. The Goddess who has been silent for centuries, is now rising up, needing to be seen, heard, tasted, felt, touched and experienced. She is calling each of us forth for a Divine plan. We feel it in our bones. We are being called to step into our Divine life purpose and stand up for what we feel is important. We are being told to take care of our bodies, love ourselves unconditionally and feel our connection to everything. She burns away what no longer serves us and opens the door for renewal and opportunity. All we have to do is open to her, and to the promises she beholds for us that are born from the deepest love.

Lox with Dill Yogurt Lemon Sauce

here is something truly magical about cured meats. The idea that the meat is safe to eat, even though no heat has been used to cook it, intrigues me. The whole process always seemed so complicated in my mind. The truth is that it’s actually quite simple. All it takes is salt and time. Salt to pull the moisture out and time to guarantee all that moisture is gone. It truly is the easiest curing method. The fear of overcooking and the risk of over or under seasoning do not exist when curing meat. The only requirement is planning. You need to give yourself plenty of time to allow the meat to cure and the rest is up to the imagination. You can use any flavor profile you can dream up — any herbs or spices, dry cure or wet cure, fish, pork or beef — the combinations are infinite. For me, cured salmon has always been my favorite. Growing up in a Jewish household, lox and bagels was always a staple at any family gathering. A soft, chewy bagel topped with rich cream cheese covered in a thick layer of velvety lox. What could be better? For this recipe, I kept it simple. I used dill and lemon, flavors commonly associated with lox, and added them to the salt during the curing process. As the salt drew out the moisture, the flavors from the lemon and dill were infused into the fish.

1/2 cup Kosher salt 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 lemon, zested, then cut into thin discs 1 bunch of dill 2 pans that fit inside each other Mix salt, sugar and lemon zest in a small bowl. Line one of the pans with a large sheet of plastic wrap. Place a layer of the overlapping lemon discs on plastic wrap (about 6 discs). Top lemons with 3 to 4 full sprigs of dill. Sprinkle 1/3 of salt mixture over lemons and dill. Press sides of salmon in salt before laying the salmon skin side down on the lemons, dill and salt. Cover salmon in remaining salt and use your hands to make sure it is completely covered in salt mixture. Top with 3 to 4 more sprigs of dill and another layer of about 6 lemon disks. Wrap salmon up tightly in plastic wrap and place second pan on top. Weigh it down with a can or vegetables or beans or rice. Place in fridge for no less than 24 hours. Note: do not let it sit for more than 5 days.

Once cured, remove from plastic wrap and discard lemons and dill. Rinse off thoroughly with water removing any bits of salt. Dry off with paper towels and slice thin. I served this batch on crostini with thinly sliced radishes and topped with a dill yogurt lemon sauce.

Dill Yogurt Lemon Sauce 1 cup Greek yogurt 1/4 cup of chopped dill Juice of 1 lemon Mix all ingredients in a small bowl, let sit for 1 hour and it is ready to serve. Summer Cooking:

Fast, Easy and Convenient!

I

’m an avid fan and ardent supporter of fresh, whole, organic foods, and I strongly advocate cooking and eating at home. People know this about me. But what many may not know is that I will gladly make an exception for processed food. Wait, what? Yes, you read that right. And yes, I do have an extremely low opinion of processed food. I’m fond of pointing out that if you’re in the habit of eating at restaurants and consuming a lot of processed food, then you’re putting your health in the hands of people who don’t know you, and have little or no stake in helping you reach your health goals. Not that they’d purposely set out to hurt their customers, of course, but they have just two goals: make it tasty so you’ll keep coming back for more, and cut every corner possible to maximize profits. I’m not blaming them; it’s just the way business works. By their very nature, most processed foods promote disease. They’re made with the cheapest possible ingredients, for the most part grown with synthetic fertilizers and sprayed heavily with pesticides. They’re most often prepared in the least healthful ways, made palatable with artificial flavors and sweeteners, and made durable with stabilizers and preservatives. Virtually none of these additives are natural, and quite a few of them are associated with health problems. So what exceptions could I possibly be referring to? My standard is simple. If nothing has been done to the food that I wouldn’t have done — if I’d had

the time, money and equipment — then using that product is an acceptable shortcut. Prime examples: a BPA-free can of organic beans, a jar of organic Italian tomato puree that contains nothing but ripe tomatoes (minus the seeds and skins), a bottle of extra-virgin olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar or dried morel mushrooms. Farming some of the work out to quality producers vastly improves our chances — and our enjoyment — of cooking at home (always a good thing). At some point we must lean on someone. As Carl Sagan put it, “If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.” Whatever works. Eat smart. Live joyfully.

Artichoke and Lentil Salad I much prefer fresh artichokes to canned or jarred, but I have to admit, if you can find a decent producer that offers good baby artichokes — packed in water — they do make a quick meal. One day, I was looking to eat on the fly. I happened to have baby artichokes and plain steamed lentils (from Trader Joe’s, not homemade) in the refrigerator. All I had to do was dice up a shallot, chop some herbs, and it was done in a flash. It keeps well for a few days, in the refrigerator. Makes about 4 servings 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar, or additional lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves 3 cups cooked lentils (preferably French green lentils) 12 artichoke hearts, rinsed, dried, and cut in half lengthwise 1/3 cup finely diced shallots Whisk the olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper in a medium bowl until emulsified. Add the parsley and thyme, and whisk until incorporated. Add the lentils, artichokes and shallots, and toss thoroughly. Serve at once. Note: This salad can be made up to two days ahead, and brought to room temperature, or if you’re in a hurry, served cold. Water Conservation

in the Yard and Garden Donna Mazzitelli

Consider applying xeriscape principles for a low-maintenance, drought-resistant yard. If your yard slopes, look for plants that will retain water and help reduce runoff.

“I

t boils down to each individual acknowledging their personal responsibility to conserve water.” This is a quote from last issue’s article, “In-Home Water Conservation.” During these hot summer months, it’s even more essential that we look at the ways we use water, most especially in our yards and gardens. Here are a few suggestions for keeping your water usage in check. 1. Plant drought-resistant lawns, shrubs and plants. Many beautiful shrubs and plants thrive with far less watering than other species. As you organize shrubs and plants, group them according to their watering needs. 2. If you are planting a new lawn this summer, or reseeding an existing lawn, look for drought-

resistant grasses. According to a 2008 NASA study on lawns, 50,000 square miles of grass covers the United States, the watering of which the EPA estimates accounts for one-third of Americans’ water usage. Depending upon where you live, there can be many droughtresistant choices available to you. 3. Replace herbaceous perennial borders with native plants. Native plants require less water and are more resistant to local plant diseases. Consider applying xeriscape principles for a lowmaintenance, drought-resistant yard. If your yard slopes, look for plants that will retain water and help reduce runoff. 4. Speaking of runoff, don’t water the gutter. Position your sprinklers so that the water

lands on the lawn or garden, and not on paved areas. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants. Mulch slows down the evaporation of moisture and discourages weed growth. Adding 2 – 4 inches of organic material such as compost or bark mulch increase the ability of the soil to retain moisture. Water your lawn only when needed. To determine if your lawn needs watering, step on the grass. If it springs back up when you move away, it doesn’t need watering. If it stays flat, it does. Let your grass grow to about 3 inches, which will promote water retention in the soil. Deep-soak your lawn when watering. Water long enough for the moisture to soak down to the roots. A light sprinkling will usually evaporate quickly and encourages shallow root systems. One way to measure whether you’ve soaked your lawn enough is to place an empty tuna can on your lawn. Once it’s full, you’ve watered about the right amount. Water during the early parts of the day; avoid watering when it’s windy when the water is blown off target and evaporates more quickly. Early morning is generally better than dusk, since it helps prevent the growth of fungus. Early watering and late watering also reduce water loss to evaporation. If your sprinklers are on timers, remember to turn off your sprinkler system on rainy days. Use efficient watering systems. You can greatly reduce the amount of water used for shrubs, beds and lawns by using soaker hoses, a rain barrel water catchment system (if legal in your town) and drip irrigation. When hand watering, use a variable spray nozzle for targeted watering. If you wash your car at home, don’t run the hose while washing. Use a pail of soapy water to wash the car and use the hose with a spray nozzle for rinsing. People often use their hoses to wash down driveways and sidewalks. Use a broom instead. Water conservation can become a natural

habit when everyone in the family is aware of its importance. Simple, ongoing water-saving practices around the home and in our yards can make a big difference in preserving this precious commodity. Donna Mazzitelli was a contributing author to Speaking Your Truth, Vols. I and II, and editor

A Beautiful Spark

I was enjoying my morning walk one day when this thought flew into my head from out of nowhere: “If not me, who? If not now, when?” We’ve all heard it before, but it brought to mind all of the amazing people who are seeing a need or problem and responding to the need, each in their own way, big or small. They don’t wait for someone else to fix things, aren’t complaining about the government’s lack of responsibility or blaming another — they just step up and do it. That evening I went to an event and met an amazing man who indeed is doing just that (more about him in a later issue), and at dinner a couple of days later a woman shared another story — the Universe was definitely talking to me. From that nudge has grown our new Beautiful Spark column, featuring and saluting those who answer the call to create positive change in the world. If you know of a Beautiful Spark, please send me the story, we know there are many of you out there: donna@bellaspark.com. Thank you to all you Beautiful Sparks who are bringing such light to the world. — Donna

Small Change Makes a Big Difference? Gloria Willis

W

hen Mary Fuller retired to Fort Collins to be near a grandchild, she wanted to “play.” But soon “just playing” wasn’t enough. She recalled a magazine article about a Philadelphia intercity physician who saw dramatic monetary need coming through the doors of her clinic. The physician held soup suppers at her home and charged friends to attend. When women came to the clinic unable to pay for medicine, an electric bill, or bus fare, she gave them money collected at the suppers. “I knew there must be women in need in Larimer County,” said Mary. “But how do I find them, how do I know they are truly needy, and how do I ask my friends for money?” Eventually Mary met members of two non-profit agencies and learned that their budgets were unable to meet many of their clients’ emergency needs. Small Change was born in 2007. Mary sent invitations to women friends, inviting them to attend an organizational meeting in her home and become possible Small Change members. She decided members would pledge $25 every two months for a year. That seemed reasonable and doable for people on fixed

incomes as well as for young families counting pennies. The agency selected would have the responsibility to send the Small Change group a short statement expressing the needs of a specific client on a personal, case-by-case basis. For instance, “Sally” needs $75 for a new car battery so she can get to her job. Or, “Suzie” needs $250 to pay her rent because she used rent money to buy medication for a sick child. Members wrote checks payable directly to the non-profit agency thus eliminating the need for Small Change to be a 501(c)(3). Mary Fuller The sixteen women who attended the first meeting created a mission statement that focused on helping women and children financially, personally and educationally. They developed an organized structure and decided the group would meet bi-monthly in the homes of members and gather for a pot-luck salad luncheon followed by a business meeting.

Soon word got out and the original group of 16 expanded to 20. Today there are 11 groups of 7-23 women per group. Since inception to the end of 2014, $132,586.00 has been donated to Larimer County nonprofits under the umbrella of Small Change. “Time and again, I hear how meaningful this way of giving is to our members because

it’s personal. We know we are making an impact on someone’s life and we know HOW we are making that impact,” said Mary. “I’m always touched with the incredible generosity of our members. If a request comes forward and we don’t quite meet the monetary need, people kick in to make it happen. It’s amazing.” Mary is a recipient of the “Creative

Women of Vision” award from Crossroads Safehouse, the “Nancy Story Gunn” award from Project Self Sufficiency and the “Channel 7 Everyday Hero” award. For more information on how to start a Small Change group, please contact gloriajwillis@yahoo.com.

If Only God Would Give Me A Sign LINDA M. POTTER

A Course in Obstacles

I

never expected to spend spring vacation on the set of a reality television show… especially not one that involved an insane obstacle course, sported a daunting name like American Ninja Warrior, and counted as its participants a “wolf pack” of amazing Colorado athletes. And I certainly never expected to be on camera as I, along with my daughter, Dawn, and grandson, Aidan, followed our favorite competitor,

Midoriyama. The popular competition attracts thousands of would-be Ninjas each year, and the show tapings draw an equal number of fans anxious to score a place in the on-camera audience. Overcoming obstructions along our path is part of the human journey, and watching the Ninjas meet and beat challenges with names like “The Spider Climb,” “Crazy Cliffhanger” and “Flying Shelf Grab” (to name a few) gives us hope that we can conquer our own Mt. Midoriyamas. Our day-to-day challenges may not be “made-for-TV,” but they have real-life consequences that are far more impactful over the long term than anything American Ninja Warrior can throw at its participants. In October of 2014, our family encountered a challenge of greater magnitude than any of us could have anticipated. After surviving the roller coaster ride of emotions that accompanied my 39-year-old daughter’s breast cancer diagnosis (and the exhausting healing journey that followed), we received yet another shock when her 8-year old son, Aidan, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Oddly enough, it was our grandson’s fascination with the American Ninja Warrior television show and his subsequent friendship with the “Ninja Doc” that helped us muster up the courage to continue moving forward regardless of just how monumental a mountain we were being asked to climb.

It’s always easier to complain than to train. But it won’t get us the results we’re looking for. Dr. Noah Kaufman — the “Ninja Doc,” through Stage 1 of the course as he swung, jumped, climbed and twisted his way to the top of the infamous warped wall and claimed victory. American Ninja Warrior pits men and women against a formidable series of obstacles in pursuit of the privilege to tackle a 75-foot rope climb that lands the challenger on a platform atop the fabled mass of metal known as Mt.

There’s no TV fame waiting for any of us at the end of Aidan’s journey, but there’s something considerably more valuable: the revelation of an inner strength we never knew we had, and the ability to see beyond appearances and visualize a future free of disease. What we learned from the Ninja experience is that nothing is accomplished without effort. The training regimen these competitors

follow is inspiring. During a day-long visit to Dr. Kaufman’s home (and part time Ninja training center) in Ft. Collins, we all had an opportunity to watch Dr. Noah and his “Wolf Pack” friends tackle obstacle after obstacle again and again and again — sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing — but never quitting. Nobody ever said life’s challenges would be easy, but they aren’t insurmountable if we’re willing to put forth the necessary effort. Even in seeming failure, there is growth and accomplishment. The members of the “Wolf Pack” know that the odds of conquering Mt. Midoriyama are slim, but it doesn’t stop them from training intensively week after week with optimism and enthusiasm. It’s always easier to complain than to train. But it won’t get us the results we’re looking for. We don’t have to physically navigate an inverted rock wall as part of our preparation, but we do have to build our mental, emotional and spiritual muscle in whatever way possible. We all have the ability to become “Spiritual Ninjas.” Whether we employ meditation, communing with nature, daily prayer work, being in service to others (or all of the above), regular “workouts” prepare us for whatever roadblocks life may erect in our path. P.S. Our family is grateful to Dr. Kaufman and the “Wolf Pack” for the support they’ve given us. The Ninja Doc,” however, is quick to say, “The Ninja Warrior course is nothing compared to what this brave little boy is going through. He gave me the inspiration to complete the qualifying course this year.” Aidan is also inspiring his family to complete our own journeys with more commitment and purpose. (Aidan and Dr. Noah will be featured on a July episode of American Ninja Warrior on NBC.) Check listings for Kansas City finals. Linda M.
