THE LOST GENERATION
Dear Readers, I am happy to present the first issue of “THE LOST GENERATION” magazine. Before you start reading I would like to say few words regarding the name of the magazine. Despite the outward gaiety, modernity, and unprecedented material wealth, young Americans of 20s were considered “lost generation”, a phrase coined by Gertrude Stein, an American writer and connoisseur of modern art. She said: “That's what you are. That's what you all are. You are a lost generation.” Being deprived of stable traditional values, the members of this generation lost their sense of identity. The moral values, religious beliefs, and the sense of patriotism: everything was undermined by the World War I and its consequences. This issue is dedicated to the description of the major historical events of the United States of America during 1925 and our readers will be acquainted with the literary and non-literary works of the representatives of modernism that were created during that year. I hope that you will enjoy reading this issue of the magazine.

“The Great Gatsby” was written by American writer F.S. Fitzgerald and it was published in 1925. This novel tells a story about young and very rich man, Jay Gatsby, and his passion towards the love of his life Daisy. Today this work is considered to be the great American novel, however when first published it did not gain much popularity among people and the sales were poor. “The Great Gatsby” deals with people’s characters such as willingness to start over again, betrayal, cruelty of society, excessive richness. The author also describes the social life of American people during Roaring Twenties.

A Letter on “The Great Gatsby by T. S. Eliot
Dear Mr. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby with your charming and overpowering inscription arrived the very morning that I was leaving in some haste for a sea voyage advised by my doctor. I therefore left it behind and only read it on my return a few days ago. I have, however, now read it three times. I am not in the least influenced by your remark about myself when I say that it has interested and excited me more than any new novel I have seen, either English or American, for a number of years. When I have time I should like to write to you more fully and tell you exactly why it seems to me such a remarkable book.In fact it seems to me to be the first step that American fiction has taken since Henry James... By the way, if you ever have any short stories which you think would be suitable for the Criterion I wish you would let me see them. With many thanks,I am, Yours very truly, T. S. Eliot

“The Three Dancers” was created in 1925 during the significant moment of Pablo Picasso’s development. It was a period when the famous painter was working in two styles that differed significantly: a neo-classical figure style and a decorative form of late synthetic Cubism. Both of these styles were used to draw “The Three Dancers”. It is suggested that the dancers in this paintings are Picasso’s close friends: Ramon Pichot, Pichot's wife, Germaine Gargallo, and Carlos Casagemas, who was in love with Germaine.
