The 2nd Annual Technology Showcase features presentations related to technology in education from COE faculty, students, alumni, FSUS colleagues, FSU Office of Distance Learning, and guest speakers. Join us for exciting presentations on using SMART (board, interactive projector, 3D doc cam, and table), 3D technologies, Braille embosser, various assistive technologies, Turning Technologies response cards (new version!), remote observation of teaching at FSUS with AXIS, and various other software and hardware facilitating learning, teaching, assessment, and research in education.

Texting contest (accuracy and speed will evaluated): Test your texting ability in this fast pace game of dueling thumbs! All you need is your cell phone! Just like in the classic game, “Telephone” you will be given a phrase that you must relay back to the judges. Bring your friends to the Learning Resource Center study room (STB 1302) to claim the title as the fastest texter in the COE along with a COE prize! Only 5 people can play at a time, so show up on the hour to secure your spot.

Name that sound: In a world full of growing technologies, there are a few iconic sounds that most of us recognize and then some that we have forgotten (or wish we never knew!). Test your knowledge of these noises from technology present and past! Bring your friends to compete against or compete against others outside of the Stone building after lunch.

Best of all, we will keep track of top scores and the person with the overall highest score will be crowned the COE Lord of Dance and will receive a prize! Whether you want to win big or just want to have fun, this will be a great time for all!

Get to know yourself better: Performance psychology equipment and devices that capture physiological, perceptual, and cognitive processes Facilitators: Jean-Charles Lebeau, Itay Basevitch, and Nataniel Boiangin (EPLS students, Sport Psychology)

In brief: Three innovative and advanced technologies will be introduced and demonstrated.

Participants will have the opportunity to try them out while performing fun activities. (a) Biofeedback equipment (Thought Technology) - analyze your stress response and pass a "lie" detector test (b) Quick Board - improve your reaction time and motor skills (c) Mobile Eye-tracking system (ASL) - examine what you "really" look at when you watch a video (d) Present your movements in the virtual world (A 3D virtual-world-based learning environment, with immersive interface that integrates Microsoft Kinect, will be demonstrated. The discussion on its application for learners with diverse characteristics and learning needs will also be presented. 3201 STB Events New tech room Done by COE students!

The purpose of the room (the new name will be announced October 10) is to create a dynamic learning environment where our College of Education students could learn and practice using various instructional technologies and tools and have clear understanding on how they can be embedded into real life teaching, learning, assessment, and research. This facility (open space type) houses technologies that are currently in use or will be used in PreK-12, continuing and higher education, and other educational organizations, allowing our students to meet rigorous accreditation requirements, state standards, and accomplished practices and preparing our graduates for successful professional careers. As of now we have SmartBoard, Smart interactive projector, Smart 3d doc cam, 3D area, gaming area, iPad, e-readers, tablets, LiveScribe pens, and some other technologies. And we will be happy to expand and include other technologies and tools recommended by students and faculty.

Getting Started with the Flipped Classroom (Webinar)

The flipped classroom is a powerful idea that is gaining momentum. In this session, we'll learn about what flipped instruction is (and what it is not), why it works, and how to get started flipping our own content. We'll examine lessons learned and insights from teachers who have been leading the way with reverse instruction techniques, and check out some tools and techniques that we can use to try it for ourselves. Getting started with this flip is easier than you might think, and you can ease into at the pace of your choosing - this presentation will provide the knowledge you need to give the flip a try, and resources to learn more.

Kelly Walsh is the CIO at The College of Westchester in White Plains, NY and the founder and author of EmergingEdTech.com. He has worked as an information technology manager for over 20 years, and in 2008 he joined The College of Westchester. In 2009, Walsh founded the popular website EmergingEdTech.com, where he writes regularly about engaging students and enhancing learning outcomes through the use of emerging Internet and instructional technologies. He presented the breakout session "Flipping the Classroom: Succeeding with Reverse Instruction" at the Campus Technology 2012 conference in Boston and has presented on other education technology topics at prior year's conferences and at schools across the U.S. Walsh recently developed an online "Flipped Classroom Workshop" that he conducts several times a year, and his newest eBook, "iPads in Education: Implementations, Apps, and Insights" is available now in iTunes.

Using Bug-In-Ear Technology to Support Practicing Educators

Jennifer Riggie PhD Student School of Teacher Education STB G154 (can sit 48) 12pm-1pm As part of her PhD dissertation research, Jennifer has been providing in-vivo coaching of an early childhood educators using Bug-In-Ear (BIE) technologies. For the purpose of her research, this includes two cell phones and a Blue Tooth device. Each teacher in her study is trained on the use of BIE and three specific intervention strategies. During an observation, she gives the teacher the Blue Tooth to wear. Then, at the beginning of the play routine, she calls the phone synced to the Blue Tooth. The teacher answers the call and then throughout the routine, Jennifer provides short prompts to the teacher to use the strategy. For example, if the strategy is reinforcement, she may say "Praise George talking;" or "Praise kids sharing." If the teacher uses reinforcement without Jennifer’s prompting, she praises the teacher by saying "great praise." Although Jennifer is coaching early childhood educators, this strategy could be used with general educators, paraprofessionals, or other professionals being observed by researchers, administrators, or colleagues. It has direct implications for research and practice.

Then the presenters will share ways in which QR codes might be integrated into learning activities. During the second half of the presentation, they will share a QR code-based activity that the Instructional Systems program did as part of student orientation this fall semester.

12pm-1pm STB 3209 (can sit 66) Pre-service teachers are required to take Classroom Assessment, a course that familiarizes them with expectations for effective educators in the area of assessment as outlined in the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices.

During Turning Point presentations, students use response devices to respond to quizzes, instructional reviews, and other activities. The reviews model formative assessment, and students’ responses provide formative information to guide instruction. All quiz and review items reflect proper formatting of assessment items. Through the use of response devices in this course, students experience best practices for effective educators in the area of classroom assessment.

Supporting Literacy Practices in Mathematics Classrooms

Literacy anchor standards identified in the Common Core State Standards do have a place in mathematics classrooms. What these practices might look like at various grade levels will be explored in this session. Meaningful learning opportunities for students in mathematics classes to engage in the anchor literacy standards of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and literature will be demonstrated and experienced by the participants.

The TLE TeachLivE™ Lab is a mixed-reality teaching environment supporting teacher practice in pedagogy and content. The TLE TeachLivE™ Lab is an iconic example of the best practice in education, using innovative technology to provide pre-service and in-service teachers the opportunity to learn teaching skills and to craft their practice without placing "real" students at risk during the learning process.

In the traditional teacher education environment real students help prospective and novice teachers become more effective educators. In a virtual teaching environment, prospective and novice teachers can make mistakes without impacting real students. In the TLE TeachLivE™ environment, prospective teachers can learn the instruction and management skills needed to become effective teachers and practicing teachers can hone and refine their skills.

Aligned with the three elements of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), the TLE TeachLivE™ simulator affords participants the opportunity to build content area and/or pedagogical skills with an understanding that skills will transfer to a real classroom situation. In the TLE TeachLivE™ lab, routines can be repeated with an individual instructor or a class of pre-service teachers until the routine is mastered. If novice teachers perform poorly or if experienced teachers want to experiment with a new teaching idea, using TLE TeachLivE™ poses no danger to the learning of any real student.

This environment has impacted the preparation of over 600 teachers at UCF and is now influencing teachers daily at 10 other university settings. Each of our university partners utilizes the TLE TeachLivE™ Lab in a unique manner dependent upon the needs of their students, teachers, professors, and community stakeholders.

RefWorks is a web-based citation manager provided by the FSU Libraries for all Florida State University faculty, students, and staff that allows you to: • Import references directly from online databases such as MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ERIC, etc.

• Store and organize references and files, such as images or full-text articles • Create correctly-formatted bibliographies in all major styles (MLA, APA, etc.)

• Cite references inside Word documents and generate a correctly formatted bibliography as you write • Export collections of references to other bibliographic software (such as EndNote) Come and learn how to access it on campus or remotely and use it!

To attend a GoToWebinar session, you will need access to the internet and a phone with a speaker or a computer with VoIP that has speakers and a microphone. NVivo software does not need to be downloaded to your computer.

GoToWebinar sessions are web based meetings where our software will be shown on your computer, while you are provided an explanation through a teleconference call.

At least 10 minutes before the meeting starts, click on the GoToWebinar Link that was emailed to you when you registered. The Citrix GoToWebinar website will make sure your computer is ready for the meeting by downloading the appropriate software required by their meeting manager. This can take anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes.
