editor’s NOTE This Time.
You may never have imagined yourself as someone who would tell her or his story to everyone, but you would probably witness how playful life could be. You may never have hoped to be at the top but would probably be pleased that you are. I know you’ve heard this before but let this remind you. The team went through frustrations, insanity, joy, bloated stomachs and parents’ worried calls just to make this for you, and so we hope you will enjoy rolling this ball of emotions with us. I hope this magazine would give you a pleasant nostalgia and probably the opportunity to reminisce the good old times. I hope you will have fun relating with the articles written and perhaps learn from them. I hope you will dream for the best future and hustle to reach for it! Take a moment to read and appreciate how time never changes about changing every thing.

salary grade 11: enough recompense?
RA 9173 or the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002 has been the very bible of the Filipino nurses, treating it as their protection, their core foundation, and guidance. But what happens if it’s continuously violated? According to this legislation, the minimum wage of nurses should be not lower than salary grade 15 or around 25,000Php. However, in status quo, it is not always the case. Nurses are receiving their income way beyond what the law dictates. What could be left after the deductions listed on the pay slip robbed almost one third of it? What about the bills at home? For personal and basic necessities? What essence does the RA give if it’s dishonored? What more protection can it give to the already vulnerable nurses? After the bill providing for a minimum base pay for nurses was pushed, the last President vetoed. Do Filipino Nurses deserve such rejection? We are certain, nurses deserve much better. Our Mother Nation is the biggest exporter of nurses around the world, yet she is in need too of them. Why does the government keep on pretending to be blind when the uproar of Filipino nurses are crystal clear? Hospitals are understaffed, the ratio 1: 12 would go to the extent of 1: 30 and sometimes even more. Imagine how exhausting it is for one who does all the work that should be done by three people. There is no such thing as holidays, only dutydays where they spend their time providing care for their patients at the expense

of their families; There are inevitable times when they are forced to work on longer shifts because of under staffing; The job is very risky, nurses are health care provider but they too are people who get sick and could catch illnesses from the area. Nurses are too good to be true; too good that this treatment they are receiving is not even fair. CPD Law also came into the picture which demands more time and money and energy to the exhausted nurses. These are some reasons why Filipino nurses keep on migrating abroad, sometimes to work as nurses, other times as someone working unrelated to their degree. Many also stay at our homeland but decide to stop practicing and choose the works that has a better offer. No matter how we look at it, these are scenarios that burdens our fatigued nurses. Aren’t these facts too obvious? That even the blind can picture the noticeable struggles and pleas of our nurses. Nurses leave because of the injustice they are suffering. Does the government think that salary grade could pay off all the efforts and skills these nurses are putting into their work? Is this the government’s way of showing how low they perceive nurses to be? We don’t know how you perceive it to be, but 18, 000Php salary is way too low for the pride Filipino nurses should have.

depression is a joke: what a concept johanna dimayuga

et’s be serious for once. I usually write about tips-on-how or technophile topics and letting other staff do articles on political issues or new school policies. I must say, this might be the most sensitive topic that I would talk about. Enragement ran through my veins, hands forming fists when I heard about the news. I was surprised that he even had the guts to lecture someone who suffers, on live television with millions witnessing how stupid his ideas were. That fact when he calls himself the “Henyo Master.” In the segment “Juan for all, all for Juan,” hosts Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Alden Richards, and Maine Mendoza visited the house of a chosen contestant, who revealed her mother has depression. Joey de Leon quickly gave his infamous opinion about it, stating that depression is just a figment of the mind and that people suffering from it are just acting out for attention. This statement went viral and backlashed the host. Netizens criticizing him for being insensitive, saying that his opinion contributes to the stigma surrounding mental health. “Pag mayaman, depression. Pag mahirap, wala, wala ka nang pag-asa sa buhay,” Comparing using the social status and degrading the poor just because of their unfortunate fate is definitely low of him. The three-decade noontime show which is supposed to give happiness to every viewers disturbed the audiences with his remarks. He is basically saying that they have no right to say that they are depressed which shows his lack of knowledge regarding the matter.
Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/ or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional

and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home. Mental health is a critical issue, especially in some Asian countries. Japan, with an estimated 70 suicide cases per day, has the Aokigahara Forest which is a popular destination for people who want to commit suicide. In South Korea, one is seen as a weakling if he has mental health problem and depression is also not seen as a clinical issue. Over 4.5 million cases of depression were reported in the Philippines, according to the Department of Health (DOH), but that number is likely to be much higher since many of those suffering from depression hesitate to seek help because of the stigma still surrounding mental disorders. Joey de Leon apologized and it was a sincere apology, owning up to his mistakes and what he did opened the minds of Filipinos regarding mental health. We have always been known to have a sunny disposition in life. Despite the misfortunes and the daily chaos that we face, we can always muster the courage to bravely put up with a smile and it saved us many times from a very miserable existence. But how long can we keep that happy composure? According to one leading London psychiatrist, Dr Cosmo Hallstrom, “Smiling depression is a term often used to refer to a patient who you think is depressed, but doesn’t look it and often won’t admit it.” Some of the people suffering from depression tend to mask their persistent sadness, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, crushing low self-esteem, pessimism, and even our secret panic attacks away from the scrutinizing eyes of the public. That is why they don’t seek the mental health professional who may help them get back to a healthy emotional and psychological

state; Filipinos stigmatized it as something to mock about. We are unaware that when such conditions are left undiagnosed and untreated, it may lead to reckless behavior or worse, suicide. We should keep in mind that not all people are the same. We are all different, including on how we face life’s ups and downs. Some people are strong enough to conquer any challenges, but some are worn-out and we should not judge them because we don’t have an idea of what they’re really going through. In reality, some situations may get out of hand, as we struggle to deal with a great amount of emotional stress along with social pressure that may actually wear us down. It is high time to end the stigma on mental health and to offer a hand to those who are in need of our help. Depression and suicide are preventable. If anyone tells you that they are depressed and that they can’t do it anymore, take it seriously and listen to them genuinely. You might not be aware, but you are already saving lives.

aking up early in the morning not having enough sleep, skipping the first meal of the day, tying hair damped from the shower, puts on nurse’s cap, dressed with apple green clinical uniform covered with a white apron pinned with a name plate, paired with stockings plus pair of shoes that’s white as snow (char). Type of person who balances classes, studying, family obligations and a personal life that takes some serious planning. On the other hand, receives judgments upon caring different kinds of patients everyday. Yes, you’re right! I am talking about us, student nurses, who, despite the sacrifices we are doing, are experiencing judgments and receiving various comments about how we should act and how we should look physically that I think nobody deserves. And I just hope you’re not one of them.
"Nursing is not about your height and how you look like. As far as I know, as long as you have the knowledge, experience and motivation and the passion to care, whether in the job, a voluntary role or towards other people, that's nursing." 6 THE NIGHTINGALE | AUGUST - DECEMBER 2017
First on the line, “dapat wala o hindi madami ang pimples”. We are aware that some institutions are implementing this nursing physical appearance requirement and don’t accept enrollees for the nursing course who are having pimples. In Manila, they are not accepting students who have severe acne on face unless they will require that student to bring a certificate that he/she is having a treatment sessions for that. Well, we can’t blame their existing rules and regulations. But wait, do you think it is fair? That becoming a nurse and care provider will be based on physical appearance and not on performance? As nurses and future nurses, we should know that a lot of times, breakouts are caused by stress and/or hormones, not
necessarily just plain hygiene, di ba? And not a lot of people can afford to go to Dermatologists & buy all those creams & astringents. Let’s stop choosing one riddled with pimples and another with smooth complexion, instead appreciate the care they are willing to share. To those who have one, lift yourself up and continue enhancing the service and needs the patients worthy of having. Don’t let your capabilities be judged by how you look outside. Second on the line, “dapat matangkad ka”, “bes paano ka maglalagay ng IV sa mataas na IV stand?”, “besabot mo?”, some of the thoughts for a student nurse who is petite.Struggle is real! During earlier times, height requirement is checked in nursing schools, and some of them were not accepted because of their height which is less than the required. It makes sense, right? For we all know, this profession requires nurses to perform some physically demanding tasks when dealing with patients, especially if you would like to be employed abroad but height should not be a hindrance, or even the reason why nurses-wanna-be’ should not be accepted in nursing schools. Nurses, like other humans, can offer help and ask for help as well. After all, nursing is not about your height and how you look like. As far as I know, as long as you have the knowledge, experience and motivation and the passion to care, whether in the job, a voluntary role or towards other people, that’s nursing. Don’t let any criticism define you in doing the career you want to achieve in life.

four year worth of chapter kliankeanolasco
I
“Graduate ka na!”
assure you, every single of us have been told by this. Yet a lingering question keeps on annoying in my head, “Gragraduateba ako?” Go on, ask the graduates... it’s either you’ll receive a positive mindset or the opposite. There is nothing in between! Nada!
I really thought that toxicity would lay low, I was wrong. Being a fourth-year college student brings back the memories from being a fourth-year high school, only it’s more frustrating. You have this uncertainty of the future, if you ask me what my plan is, I would honestly answer that I don’t know. It feels like looking at a blank canvas, without any inspiration nor motivation of how to put pigments on it.
in a form of slap that I am undeniably ending another chapter. A 4 freakin’ year worth of chapter that is full of unending requirements, endless reporting, RetDem, what-is-the-most-orange-in-theseoranges kind of exams, shocking grades, toxic-ang-patient-pati-na-rin-‘yong-SO, scolded by the CI moments, bonding with college acquaintances, and most of all, bangag days.
if you are graduating. Whether you are a fourth year BSN student (my classmate) or not, I know you could relate with me, if not- you’ll come across to where I am. However, this is not a discouragement, instead take it as an encouragement to go and walk. Take your time and be sure to enjoy it and move forward to the end of the chapter.Remember, you are going to have this walk only for once. Just once.
I know, being a student journalist is hard. If I must say, being a student leader is too, and if it’s not even obvious- being a student nurse is not exemption, especially
Be ready to start a new chapter and fill it with memories, bad or good, doesn’t matter. As long as your hand is guided by Him, you’ll going to be okay. Together,
Pressure from all the corners keeps on pestering us.It stays there gawking, waiting for our ugly nervous breakdown we keep on holding up. Pressure keeps on intensifying each day, but I’m sure we strive for one thing- 100% passing rate for the batch, some even goals to be a topnotcher. Some struggles for cumlaude, others, for diligence in studies. We computed the GWA of our class and almost were within the bracket of a diligence in studies awardee. That was the time when I realized that nursing students are truly intelligent but the entire 4 freakin’ year program made us probed ourselves if we indeed are. Because of the graduation nearing, pressure from searching more certificates from extracurricular activities is even more trending than before. I personally want to have more awards to compensate by not being a running for cumlaude. I want my parents to be (extra) proud of me, even everyone I care should be proud of me, my own self - which is the hardest, especially if since the first day, I am doubting my capability as a student nurse. As I make this column, it seems like the universe is giving me a reality check opinion

cheery and chummy hello! Welcome to my column, a unique world of elastic and echoing outlet of my ideas and sentiments. While I was staring on the ceiling and thinking what to write for my column I came up with this – NURSING LIFE. As I start wielding my pen, let everyone savor this writing recipe I will serve. I assure that with all my thirstiness in giving and serving you information, I will squeeze my mind to cater you with an appetizing and irresistible menu. Get your plates now and ready your taste buds incredible and palatable taste. For a nursing student, every semester is a cook fest to savor the challenging experiences of nursing school. first sem could be salty. Second sem is sweet. Midyear could be or bitter. And the following semester could be creamy or plain. But, all could be boiled down into two, the sweet and bitter to make each ingredient complete. Nursing is definitely not an easy course; you will spend countless evenings to study, poring over textbooks plus the exhausted feeling in the clinical area, but you have to remember the reason why you started this journey and always remember to smile and do the BEST you can for your patients. I know it wasn’t easy – TRUST ME, I KNOW! , but it is why I am here helping, Trust in yourself, your friend, your family, and ofcourse the big guy upstairs (Yeah, it’s God). It won’t last forever and it won’t wear you down. Just keep on. Your patents count on you to know what to do and what to say in all kinds of situation. I’m sure, after hearing words of gratitude from your patients, it will surely touch your heart which can be

one of the forces that will make you fall deeper in love with nursing. These will inspire you to continue your journey and shape your views for a colourful, delightful and vigorous nursing life. On the opposite side, I am pertaining to the bitter part nursing life is not a bed of roses. Some, if not all, students feel intoxicated with - failing grades, financial burdens, problems, struggles, anxiety and stress that spoil and poison nursing student’s spirit and confidence. These are the shadows of realities, definitely the disturbances and rocks that hinder the smooth flow of the passageway to their dreams. Nursing life will be twisting out of control, and will entail a lot sacrifices but it also spells meaningful differences in the lives of others. To be a “Registered Nurse” is every nursing student’s dream. Yeah, just two words yet too hard to reach. It tests endurance and courage before that two letter affixed with your name. But you should always bear in mind that “What we sow, we reap”. Believe me, everything will be worth it someday. After all, when sweet and bitter taste are well-mixed and combined, it can produce an incredible taste. Perhaps it is the reason that even this endeavour is too risky, NURSES are fearlessly standing in the midst of horrible and terrifying diseases, fighting and rescuing not withstanding what could possibly risk their lives. These and more are heroic deeds that are worth- emulating and worth- preserving.
Nursing life will be twisting out of control, it really entails a lot sacrifices but it also spells meaningful differences in the lives of others. opinion

Bakit?

THE NIGHTINGALE | AUGUST - DECEMBER 2017 13

In Between Your Hands I remember everything; From the way you felt My surface with your slender hands, To the look on your face When you said I’m not enough. I cannot forget the things; The sliced pieces of perfection, Slowly piled up on my back Crushing my fragile spine, I cracked. Formed a smile, said it was fine. I did not decipher the hints; Tortured that I cannot speak. Still gave you my last piece, That I have been reserving. Cared enough to let you take all of me. I tried so hard that I cried ink, When you finally took a bite But spat it out and led me to the bin. Disgusting and filthy trash, That you would never want to taste again, I still remember everything;
Heto Na!
As I sank in the words you said to me. Screaming, but no one hears Eyelids turning heavy as I drowned To death in the sea of your promises.

An Excerpt on Timing c l a r i s s a fay e ta m o n t e
“We’re actual idiots for messing this up,” he said, taking another drag on his cigarette. The ghost of a smile lingered on his lips, but it didn’t reach his eyes. They remained cold and distant, focused on a point above the girl’s head. There was a time when he could have watched her forever, when every second he did not stare at her felt like wasted time. It had been too long since he’d thought things between them would ever change. “We really are,” she agreed, pulling the sleeves of her coat over her hands to protect them from the cold. “Do you believe in timing? In bad timing? In meeting a person at the wrong time?” He did turn to look at her then and regretted it the instant he took in her face. There was so much hope in her eyes, so much unwavering faith that he seemed completely unable to shatter, no matter how many times they had failed to make things between them work. “I guess, but it’d be too easy to blame it on timing.” He took one more drag, then stubbed the cigarette out on the ground. His mouth already tasted of ash as it was. She crinkled her nose when he blew the remnants of smoke out through his mouth, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care. Not now that she was beginning to dig up excuses for their inability to meet the other one halfway. For some reason they had been running in circles for almost a year now, always missing each other, never admitting how they felt when they both felt the same way. What was so difficult about want and need when the feeling was

returned? Why were they always running away from each other when things got serious? It was as much his fault as it was hers, but all good things came to an end and the time of running was over. Now there was only confrontation and a solution, but no more made up excuses for them. He couldn’t take one more day of uncertainty. “Yes, it would be too easy,” she said, taking a step toward him, “and I don’t think timing is important if two people are meant to be together“. She rolled up her sleeves and took his hands in hers, sending a wave of warmth down his back. “Truth is we’re scared. Yes,” she added with a laugh, “not just me. You’re just as scared. You don’t want to get hurt and I understand. But we’ve been living in the past for so long. Turning over reasons why we didn’t end up together when we could have spent last year working on making more time for each other.” Her thumb brushed over his palm as she came closer still, so close he could count the freckles on her nose. “We don’t meet the right people at the wrong time. We should let the past slide and stop caring about good or bad and right or wrong. If you meet the right person, you make time for them. You fight for them to stay in your life. I didn’t fight. I took you and the feelings you had for me for granted. And from now on I am going to fight. I am going to do anything to keep you right where you are - at my side, whether or not you think our timing was right or wrong.”

16 THE NIGHTINGALE | AUGUST - DECEMBER 2017

Let it Rise Again
TESDA Aids Filipino Nurses j o h a n n a d i m ay u ga
Japan is known for its advancements specifically in science and technology, obviously making it one of the well-developed countries in the world. Recently, the land of the rising sun led a helping hand to Filipino nurses and caregivers with the aid of TESDA. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported a number of 2.5 million unemployed Filipinos, consisting a massive number of nursing graduates, registered nurses, caregiving graduates and certified caregivers. Due to the oversupply of graduates from these fields, some expected a sour future ahead of them and choose to not pursue their chosen career and just settle for other jobs like being a call center
agent or starting a small business. The Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) found this issue alarming. Nursing schools today are also experiencing a shortage in the number of enrolees because of this issue, making other institutions shut down their nursing programs. The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) came up with a solution to this problem and gave the nurses and caregivers a chance to practice their craft outside the country specifically in Japan. TESDA included the Japanese Language and Culture in its Language Skills Institute (LSI) which is offered only in TESDA Women’s Center located at Taguig City.
LSI is also offering programs for skilled workers who are wishing to work in other countries like lectures in practicing English, Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, Italian and Arabic languages. The Japanese Language and Culture is a six-month program and is one of the basic entry requirements to Japan. For nurses, it is a must to take the Japan Licensure Exam For Nurses in order to have a permanent job. As a nursing student, I view this as a new fire in the career of nurses in the Philippines. The conflagration is starting; let the future of Filipino nurses rise once again.

Bakit pag may taong mahirap minamaliit? Pag may kapansanan nilalayuan? Pag pangit pinagtatawanan? Pag bakla at tomboy salot ba agad? Pag pango Pilipino? Pag mabaho indyano?

Wala akong ideya. Hindi ko rin sila mahatolan. Marahil natatakot lamang tayong malamangan.

I’ve been wearing glasses for about 12 years no. I’ve had them since I was 8. Some of the struggles I face: When you wake up in the morning and you forgot where you put your glasses, so you end up looking for then for 30 minutes cause you can’t see; when I sweat a lot they tend to fall off or slide down; They make me look like a nerd. That’s all I can really think of.

I’ve been wearing it for 2 months now. Wearing a mask is required in the ICU and regarless how fit/ fixed/ tight the mask, it will make my glasses foggy and I’m to forced to remove it temporarily

Tumataas yung grado. Tapos kapag may“milat” ket nag madi bes. Hahaha! Tapos maiexpose pa yung eyeglasses kong may patients ako na may communicable disease kaya kailangan ko ng extra time for cleaning.

7 months pa langperoanglakasna (160 left, 150 right). I’m still not used to wearing my glasses even thoughi should be wearing then 24/7 as said by my optha. First struggle, I have to constantly wipe it clean before using it. Second, I sweat a lot and when I do, I have to adjust them ever minute. Third, I read this online but I can totally relate with it; People always asking to try on my glasses, as if somehow they will magically improve their vision as well. Lastly, whenever I lie down wearing them, it’s hard not to think that they will break. But despite all of that, it still helps me a lot everyday. health
facts about:
Japanese Encephalitis: What everyone should know Japanese Encephalitis is a type of brain infection caused by the JE Virus which is carried by infected mosquitoes The virus is found on pigs and birds. It is passed on to mosquitoes if they bite aninfected animal
A
Avian Flu
t midyear of 2017 in the Philippines, reports of a virus found in sick birds from certain places in the country was all over the news. The outbreak is called the Avian Flu a.k.a Bird Flu which caused the people to fear and avoid the fast-food chains that serve foods with chickens. And to tell you honestly, as an ordinary person, it also caused me to be scared of these beaneries. But as a matter of fact, this malady rarely affects us, humans, and according to some reports, the mortality rate is low. However, it is a serious matter when it is transmitted to us for the reason that it is often deadly. So to get ourselves educated about it, below are the things we need to know about Avian Flu. * Avian Inlfluenza, informally known as Avian Flu or Bird Flu, is caused by a type of influenza virus that rarely infects humans.
The Virus is passed on to human through a bite of day- and night-biting mosquito (CulexTritaeniorhynchus) which commonly thrive in Rural and agricultural areas
* Avian Flu has two forms, a mild form and a fatal form that can cause death within 24 hours of the first appearance of symptoms.
The first case of JE was documented in Japan in 1871
* The deadly strain of influenza virus currently found in Southeast Asia is known as H5N1 strain.
It takes 5 to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito to develop symptoms. Signs& symptoms includes fever, chills, headache, fatigue, N/V, confusion and in severe cases, neck stiffness, seizures, paralysis and coma which may lead to death Children 15 years old and below are most vulnerable to the disease JE is not contagious, it can’t be spread from person to person. There is no cure. Treatment is supportive to relieve symptoms and stabilize the patient Vaccination is the best means of prevention. There are 4 main types of JE vaccines currently in use: inactivated mouse brain-derived vaccines, inactivated Vero cell-derived vaccines, live attenuated vaccines, and live recombinant vaccines. In the Philippines, the only available vaccine for JE is the JE-chimeric vaccine (IMOJEV®). It is produced by Vero cell culture, a cell culture technology recommended by WHO. Because it is a live attenuated vaccine, it is not recommended for pregnant women. Sanofi Pasteur is the duly licensed manufacturer of the vaccine. Despite having the vaccine, precautions should still be observed to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes that carry the virus. health
* The virus is being spread through contactwith an infected bird’s feces or secretions from its mouth, nose, and eyes. * In very few instances, it has been transmitted from one human to another. However, the pattern of human transmission remains mysterious. * It is not transmitted by eating properly cooked poultry meat or infected birds’ eggs. * Cough, fever, sore throat, and muscle aches are the common symptoms. Sometimes, it can cause vomiting or diarrhea, and an eye infection (conjunctivitis). * Symptoms may be present but several tests must be done to confirm it. Tests include laboratory exams and a Chest X-ray may be useful in assessing the condition of the lungs. * Life-threatening complications may include pneumonia, collapsed lung, respiratory failure, kidney dysfunction, and heart problems. * The virus is different from other viruses that the body doesn’t have immunity against it. * The first vaccine that has been established on April 17, 2007 is called H5N1 Influenza Virus Vaccine manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur, Inc.
