ABOUT THE COVER “The animosity of being me” Thru ignorance and wrong judgments, the rainbow colors are fading. A rainbow that never had the chance to shine and see it’s color and light. 2 persons mistreated Because of showing who they really are, expressing what they desire, and for revealing how colorful their lives are. But still standing so that others stand up as well and prove together that there is nothing wrong of being who you are.

MEASCLES OUTBREAK: A WAKE UP CALL

M

y child, my rules!" It's frustrating that some parents are more concerned about protecting their children from imaginary threats than from a well-documented and proven killer. With all the lurking issues concerning outbreaks - why would parents leave their children vulnerable to an illness when there is a known, proven and safe vaccine? Why threaten and endanger the life of a baby when there is a preventable measure? These are the terrifying questions that must be raised and needed to be answered relevant to the horrible and dreadful outbreak of measles. The number of confirmed and compatible measles cases in the Philippines has increased this 2018 despite the launching of a measles vaccination campaign earlier this year. As of May 20, the Philippines has seen 3, 644 total lab confirmed (921) and compatible measles cases, while in 2017, 1,224 cases were reported, according to a WHO Measles/Rubella Bulletin. The country has also seen 16 measles related deaths. In early April, the Department of Health launched the "Ligtas Tigdas," a strategy to curb and eradicate the spread of measles through the provision of free vaccination among infants and children 6-59 months as outbreaks popped up in a number of major cities including Taguig City, Zamboanga and Davao among others. The measles cases have again begun to spread in the last quarter of 2017 following significant decreases after the last measles vaccination campaign following the large 2014 outbreak.

EDITORIAL

Measles is a highly contagious illness caused by a virus; it can lead to serious complications - including pneumonia, encephalitis and death. It spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes and can linger in the air for up to two hours. The risk of exposure is higher for certain populations. Epidemics still occur, typically in developing countries without mass vaccination programs. Close contact with non-vaccinated individuals from these countries (e.g., clinics and hospitals) increases the chance of exposure among non-immune individuals.

4

measles in the Philippines, outbreaks still continue to occur. In recent years, the number of measles cases has increased, and outbreaks continue to be reported in communities with a high number of unvaccinated people, and as a disease long under control is fueled by patchy immunization programs and declining trust in vaccines. According to Anna Lisa Ong-Lim, head of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of the Philippines, 69 percent of children with measles this year proved to have had no immunizations, for reasons such as their parent's refusal. Immunization rates have plummeted nationwide because of the scare triggered by the scandal that eroded over the administration of Dengvaxia, anti-dengue vaccine, to more than 830,000 public school students, many of them in grade school. Dengvaxia was partly to be blamed for the low trust in the government's mass immunization program, with health workers sometimes labeled "killers" in some areas. Filipinos are becoming scientifically illiterate. Misconception and lack of understanding on how vaccines work is the main problem here. Ignorance and distrust are still causing people to forgo immunization. By educating parents on vaccinations, we can aim to increase uptake in children. It cannot be said loudly enough: but vaccine is safe and effective. Measles can be prevented. •

or those who couldn’t make it on time.

I know that all of us are eager to ramp on stage, flaunt the fancy raiment that we will wear, and have the look that will leave the crowd in awe as we get the crown that we are yearning for years. But wait, am I seriously babbling about a beauty contest? The prestigious Mr. and Ms. UNP pageant, perhaps? Of course, not! I am talking about the day we march with our loved ones, wearing our toga as we get our diploma. To be honest, I could have taken this opportunity to write something where I am good at. If you are following me on my social media accounts, most especially on Twitter, you can see how loud I am and you can also hear through my tweets how noisy I am when it comes to socio-political issues. But right now, it is different because I choose to talk about us. Hence, this is dedicated to all the students who are struggling to finish college.

It is not easy, I know. The pressure coming from the people who surround you is on ever since the day you started your own battle and it just goes higher because all eyes are now set on you because of the reality that you are the only student in your batch who couldn't make it on time. Some would comfort you and encourage you to do better, but what we do not know is their true intentions. Do they really care or are they just waiting for the perfect time to talk and laugh at your failures? I just hope that it is the former, though. I come to realize, why do some people think that all things are not rocket science? Do they really think that they have the right to invalidate someone else's struggle just because they feel otherwise? Seriously? No! We are all in a different level so it is only right to mind our own business. Guys, what we should really put in our minds is that college will never be a race. It is not about rushing or finishing it first, but it is all about how we beat the obstacles that college offers. It is how we survive and get out of the “hell” physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy. •

ALL EYES ARE NOW SET ON YOU BECAUSE OF THE REALITY THAT YOU ARE THE ONLY STUDENT IN YOUR BATCH WHO COULD’T MAKE IT ON TIME OPINION

As you all know, I am surrounded by friends who are delayed, and there are certain reasons why they are, just like failing a subject, shifting to another course and choosing a better degree, or encountering unavoidable circumstances. Every day, their rants often serve as my breakfast, and I often hear them complain how hard college is, how

toxic their schedules are, and how stoked they are to finish their chosen degree.

NURSING BA KAMO? PANINDIGAN MO! vrian eloise urbano

Pangalawng Taon.

TO PASS THE BOARD EXAM. •

#NURSING LIFE kryss lyka rosaro

C

offee, scrubs, rubber and gloves."

Before entering to college, the first things that go through your mind are: yey! I get to be away from my parents, I can eat and visit whatever and wherever I want, I have full emancipation and freedom to live my life, and I'm going to make these four years count. WELL, FORTUNATELY BUT UNFORTUNATELY NOT! College is one of the most nerve-racking and exhausting part of a student's life. One day I remember someone asked me, why I chose nursing? Well, to be frank I didn't have any good reason: I JUST DID. I didn't make a pros and cons sheet and pick this because of what I liked about it. But along the way, I fell in love with the nursing process. The critical thinking skills and experiences where I would think to myself "how did they know how to do that? I want to know how to do it too!", is the main reason why I pursue this kind of profession. Eventually I realize, stepping in to my nursing life was one of the most grueling, yet rewarding years of my life. I thought my first 2 year was going to be an easy-peasy until I just caught myself crying because of the toxicity and overloading school responsibilities.

Then, we come to my fourth year, again I thought it was going to be easy, I thought it would get easier since we had less course but I was wrong for the second time. All of us now are under the huge and tremendous pressure because of the board exam that we will face months from now. But the only thing that each of one of us can do is to relax, work hard and pray – guys I know it wasn't easy but trust me we will and we can make it! We as nursing students are all so different, yet are all the same with the loads that are thrown on our plate and are expected to consume all of it. And the dessert is not to complain. That's why I'm sharing you this my nursing life. After all, nursing school will be the most exhausting yet the best experience in your life. You may have been shy and timid before but now are outspoken and confident in all aspect. Nursing will tests your endurance and courage before that two letter (RN) affixed in your name. Sooner, you will learn to overcome your fears and push through to the next level. You will appreciate that nursing is not just about drinking ounces of coffees, wearing scrubs, and putting in rubber and gloves. It is all about the passion. So for those who are aspiring to be a nurse, go for it! •

NURSING WILL TESTS YOUR ENDURANCE AND COURAGE BEFORE THAT TWO LETTER (RN) AFFIXED IN YOUR NAME. OPINION

Towards my third year, I'll never forget my first clinical experience. I had a sleepless night and my mind was racing as I lay in bed trying to review the head to toe assessment, making sure I would be ready and flawless when my Clinical Instructor would be asking. I assure you, third year is one of the most

exciting part of your nursing life. You will learn the most interesting procedures such as inserting IVs, bandaging and dressing wounds, and inserting in NG tubes.

SOCIAL media can be CRUCIAL krizha angela nicolas ADDICTION DOESN’T ALWAYS COME IN THE FORM OF DRUGS AND SMOKING. SOCIAL MEDIA IS ANOTHER FORM WHICH CAN GET WORSE IN NO TIME.

S

tudents always read their book whenever they have nothing to do.

OPINION

But that was before. And even if that norm still exists, certainly it stays not long enough. It is rapidly fading like almost gone. Why? The primary and obvious reason of that is because of us, now living in the world where everything is under the control of modernity. And of course, we live in an age where it has become hard to distinguish between the real world and the virtual world. Whereas students, nowadays, are becoming more engrossed to the things that this modernization is giving, particularly the so-called SOCIAL MEDIA.

8

Long gone were the days of students reading their books and lessons after school or whenever they have nothing to do. For right now is the time for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr and WhatsApp - the world we are surrounded by. And at this point, truth speaks out that it has become hard to imagine what our day would be like without internet connection and without socialising

in the virtual world of social media. Moreover, we seem to be hypnotized by the fantasy that these are displaying, that mandating us to be highly participative to whatever there is. And that failure to do so can cause the Earth to rotate the other way around. Before going through, let me clear one thing here. I will not be lecturing you on the bad aspects of social media, nor making you feel guilty for using it. Instead, I just want to enlighten and make all of you aware about the effects or changes it has brought to our lives, most especially to the students. According to a research, 47% of Filipinos are active social media users. Moreover, The Philippines topped again the world in terms of social media usage as the number users in the country hit 67 million people, according to a new report by London, United Kingdom - based consultancy We Are Social. On the other hand, Facebook being the most popular and most used social media hits 1.49 billion active users. And guess who composed those numbers, of course, the most evident answer would be the students of today. Taken from my own experiences, almost, if not, all of the people I have met and been with contribute to the number of active users aforementioned. In fact, most of those people are students. And I must say and add that being engage in social media really has a huge impact on someone's norms specifically on the study habits of the students. And what are the huge impacts I am talking about? Let me elaborate. Students who are social media users suck at managing their time. I know some would protest on this but it's a fact really. Instead of doing the things required for school there you are scrolling up and down the Facebook for some posts. Nice, you just wasted your time for something really not important. You even made yourself less productive. And when this becomes your habit, eventually it will lead to unstoppable raging procrastination. Been there, done that, take it from the one who has been engulfed with that kind of habit. Students are making it to the limelight for posting of unending rants about studying. This is another concern for it is becoming undeniably out of the league for the students. They are becoming more like protesters for having so many things to say, demands and complaints regarding school. And they are using social media as a gate in order for them to extend and tell the world what awful things they are experiencing

in the institution. They keep on posting unending rants that they have no time for themselves because the teachers gave them so many things to do and other stuffs like that. Instead, why don't they just minimize using social media and just start what they have and must do? Stop telling the whole world how stress you are, deal with it by being productive in doing your requirements. Social media is taking up most of our times, without us noticing it. The absurdity of being addict to it is unbreakable. Addiction doesn't always come in the form of drugs and smoking. Social media is another form which can get worse in no time. At first, it is your physical health that is at stake but in the latter, occurrence of mental illness is highly visible. And the sad part is that those dangers come along without you realizing it. You must have had those times that you would feel the rush of joy whenever you found out that you gained so many likes and reacts to your post. Studies show that for every like, comment and share, there is a dopamine rush inside you, the same neurohormone that is released during smiling and hugging etc. Social media can effortlessly give a false meaning to accomplishments so don't get deceived. On the other hand, social media undoubtedly is a very useful tool. Such that it made possible for the students to do their school works in just a swift, "one click" as they say. But what made it the one to blame for those huge impacts are the ones who use it. It is on us why we are being drowned with those diversions. We tend to be careless in managing and engaging with those. And that we neglect the responsibilities and consequences that are link on using social media. Considering all the above mentioned perceptions, it is necessary to develop certain regulations over the use of social media, especially to the students in high school and college. But still, having the time to socialize should be taken in an effective way for students. It should not hamper their school or college performance. Also the students must know that social media is only giving virtual worlds that is drastically different from the real world. Above all of those, I think the best way to divert of falling into those kind of situations is to be more focused in your studies. Be productive enough. Put first, things first. Turn off your phone and start now what you have to do for school. •

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE: A MAJOR THREAT TO HUMAN LIVES

A

n antibiotic apocalypse is dangerously expanding around the world. We all know that antibiotic is a powerful medicine that kills and impedes the growth of bacteria. It is used to prevent and treat infectious diseases. It is considered as a wonder discovery of the 20th century because it successfully treated patients with infection and save people's lives. But sadly it is the major threat to human lives nowadays. Infectious diseases are becoming untreatable for infectious bacteria mutate and develop resistance to antibiotics that designed to kill them. It is found that overuse, underuse and misuse of antibiotics are the major causes of developing of an antibiotic-resistant bacteria. According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 700 thousand people die each year because of antibiotic resistance and if left unaddressed, this will increase in 10 million in the coming decades. Rapidly increase of antibiotic resistance will definitely affect human lives and put people at risk and crisis. In order to prevent it, here are the things we should consider:

HEALTH

OV E R - P R E S C R I B I N G O F A N T I B I OT I C S

14

An estimated 30% of the millions of prescription written each year are not

needed. We have to know that antibiotics don't cure viral infections such as colds and flu so don't take them if you're suffering from these viral infections instead take a plenty of rest and drink a lot of water.

I N C O M P L I A N C E TO F U L LC O U R S E O F T R E AT M E N T R EG I M E N

Make sure to complete the entire prescription of antibiotics even if you begin to feel better. Don't skip doses; and use them as prescribed. If this is not done, the remaining bacteria will multiply and become resistant to antibiotic. Don't also share your antibiotics to others and most importantly don't save antibiotics for future use.

H O S P I TA L S A N D C L I N I C S P O O R I N F EC T I O N C O N T R O L

Infection control should be one of the highest priorities of the hospitals and clinics because there are a lot of infectious diseases in these areas. Infectious agents can easily enter to human body. A patient that carries an antibiotic-resistant bacteria will act as the source of the other patients. Hospitals' and clinics' instruments and environment should practice good disinfecting protocols so that their patients will not be infected.

Farmers are using antibiotics for animal growth promotion and vaccination. Antibiotics are also used in agricultural crops. Increased use and abuse of antibiotics in agricultural sector will lead to food consumers at risk so we must ensure food safety and security. Resistant bacteria are usually detected in chicken and meat so we have to follow the food safety tips and World Health Organization (WHO) Five Keys to Safer Food - keep clean, separate raw and cooked, cook thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures, use safe water and raw materials. We should also promote good practices in food and agricultural systems, good hygiene, biosecurity measures, and practice the use of alternatives to antibiotics.

Bacteria are everywhere so we should practice proper hygiene and sanitation all the time. High-quality of sanitation and hygiene is a great weapon to beat the rapidly spreading of antibiotic-resistant bacteria so don’t forget to wash your hands always.

B AC T E R I A R E P R O D U C E Q U I C K LY

We might not see them with the naked eye but they exist and can end our lives in a snap. So awareness of proper using of antibiotics is a big help to preserve antibiotics effectiveness and reduce the risks of antibiotic resistance. It is better to be safe than sorry.

TRAVEL VLOG 101

singapore 2018: Travel with a Purpose BY: JERMAINE MARIA UNCIANO

Common Purpose – ASEAN Young Leaders Programme 2018, in partnership with the National Youth Council, Singapore and the Singapore Institute of Technology is a three-day experiential learning programme that brought together 150 exceptional young leaders from different backgrounds to pitch in ideas on "How can young leaders make ASEAN more resilient and innovative?" I have always listed traveling in my bucket and discovering different places. I am sure learning unique stories of different places intrigues my inner detective. I never thought that I will have a trip overseas but with a purpose! I am grateful that this programme happened. It was only a three-day programme where each day was filled with fun and insights regarding topics that ignites my interests like ASEAN, cultural intelligence, critical and design-thinking, resilience, sustainability. Each day at Singapore Institute of Technology, from all of the lectures, I never thought that there was going to be a lot of knowledge to gain, but I was mistaken. At first, I thought it was hard to deal with people, from fellow students to professionals of diverse cultures but each day, we were able to connect our own perspectives of a certain issue to come up with solution to reach a common purpose. They provided us an idea on ASEAN's background, pillars, challenges, global issues, achievements and future trends. I will share to you what I learned in this event.

Second, I learned about cultural intelligence (CQ). In all honesty, I did not know such a thing exists. Of course we know the presence if intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ) but this CQ is like a foreign data in my brain. I know I just have the average intelligence in those three aspects but on the CQ, it must be a continous learning because as time passes by there are many things that we encounter which may just be a test of what we already knew. But what was fixed in my mind during the lecture was this – "Cross boundaries, invisible or not." It had such a huge impact when it comes to an ambivert like me but it has such a bigger impression when it comes to communication. In order to achieve a greater and clearer vision, we must be mindful of these boundaries which may think invisible. Next, I learned about deisgn-thinking which is a great tactic in leadership and innovation. Its says that collective thinking is better and humancentered process is what makes people more creative. There are five key concepts that helped us solve the challenge of the programme – "How

can young leaders make ASEAN more resilient and innovative?": (1) Learn about our audience; (2) Define based on the need; (3) Design creative solutions; (4) Build a representation of the ideas; (5) Test your ideas. Lastly, I learned about a topic which I did not fully know, which was on sustainable and liveable cities. In our company trip to Center for Liveable Cities (CLC), whose mission is to distill, create and share knowledge on liveable and sustainable cities. We were given a background of the company and what they do to make cities liveable and sustainable has been helping urban leaders and practitioners with the knowledge and support needed to make our cities better. Through their four main areas – Research, Capability Development, Knowledge Platforms, Advisory. Among these areas are five points to keep in mind – (a) Execution is the "key"; (b) Always involve the community; (c) Work by system, let the data drive the theory or plan; (d) Acknowledge the theory of plan that works and what not works and (e) Use technology as a medium to connect and enchance the needs of the cities. I am so blessed to be able to participate in this type of programme because it widened my perspective of things and developed my leadership skills. It brought me friends of diverse cultures, though it was just through a five minute talk, but I will treasure what we talked about in that short period of time. I am happy that I can use what I gained from this seminar into my future profession as I work with people of diverse cultures. The learnings I earned and friendships I made will forever be in my heart.my future profession as I work with people of diverse cultures.

FEATURE

First, I learned about leadership. As many of you know, I participated in different leadership seminar and workshops as a student leader. The speaker gave us a background of ASEAN and some figures. Then he emphasized the four

aspects of leadership: leadersip, innovation, passion and purpose. These aspects need the right surroundings to function effectively. It narrows down to the question of "Whom do we lead?" I can answer that question straight-forward. I lead for the people of ASEAN especially the youth to inspire and instill unity among each of these nations and to enhance our appreciation on our diversity. I also learned in this lecture that we, the young leaders should not be afraid to take a step forward and take on new challenges as we grow through in life. While working on to reach the goal, we should not forget to improve our cultural intelligence and stregthen the friendships we have.

THE GRILLING CASE

SAMGYE

IN THE

This decade marked an era of Koreanization: from dramas, songs, language, beauty, fashion, trends, and even food. Koreans have invaded the Philippines by penetrating its culture and way of life, and Filipinos for the most part are welcoming them with open arms. The Korean culture wave was first brought to us by telenovelas, which grew on popularity and demand because Korean dramas contain various themes, storylines, and moments that caught the attention of the television-loving Pinoys. And since it’s Asia, it was showcased in a more relatable way to most Filipinos. Korean dramas also showcased KPop, KFashion, KMakeUp, and ofcourse, KFood.

DEVCOMM

Jewel in the Palace was one of the most popular dramas shown in Philippine TV history. One of the key parts of the storyline? The Korean cuisine and what it’s all about. Soon after, the Korean food story started in the country.

16

Recently, there has been a surge of new Korean restaurants in our country, which was originally intended to cater Korean immigrants and Korean food lovers in our country. Now, it somehow found its way into the norm of the Filipino palate and style. One of the most popular Korean dishes that Filipinos love is samgyeopsal—a korean term for grilled pork belly.

flavor. From chilis to kimchi, you now have bananas as side dishes. The typical soy sauce sibuyas sawsawan is now part of our usual sawsawan as well. But here’s the grilling case, I mean thrilling case... we have adapted a food culture that only worsens our existing issues, the Filipinos prone to heart attacks, high blood and stroke. We have met a healthy culture and yet all we take from them is an aspect which is very Filipino and will not aid us to be better versions of ourselves. We can always inherit some cultures, we can always go for things from other countries. But here’s to hoping that the samgyupsal madness of today won’t grill us in the future. DEVCOMM

Samgyeopsal can be cut into three characters which means: three (sam), layered (gyup or gyeop), and flesh (sal). In fact, one of the korean food establishments arise is in our country is named after it. It is called, “Samgyupsalamat”—the name is a play of words between samgyupsal (samgyeopsal: a korean cuisine) and the Filipino word “salamat” which means “thank you” to incorporate the filipino culture in it. And samgyupsalamat, is just the right example of Pinoys consuming more and more Korean’s way of living.

The virus lives in the mucus of the nose and throat of an infected child or adult. More than 10,000 measles cases have been reported this 2018. The latest count by the World Health Organization (WHO) Philippines office is 17,298 measles cases as of November this year. This is 367 percent more than the 3,706 cases reported last 2017. LIFE, LOVE AND VICTORY BY KRYSS LYKA ROSARO

In life there are many things that happen which are least expected. When these things turn out to be blessings, people's hearts are softened and they look up above to praise Him in glorious words. Some may just leave occurrences and daily happenings to destiny and may just keep everything to themselves. But have you ever gone out of your way to do something good for someone, and had it unnoticed? Very often it is difficult to believe that doing good to others is worth the effort, especially when we don’t receive a thank you in return. And yet, serving without looking for reward is just like walking with God peacefully. As Christians, we should not display a cash-and-carry attitude of expecting immediate appreciation for the good we do. We must remember that someday He will richly reward us. Love is absolutely necessary for every human heart. But it is of great importance to every young person especially to have in his heart a true, genuine and abiding love of God. It is said that the conclusive battles to be fought are the devil, the world and the flesh. However, with the power of Love --- the love of God, all of these can be conquered. It is only when a burning love of God dwells in one's heart that he may hope to speak of victories. The history of the world, the pages of sacred history, and the history of each individual alike teach us that without love there can be no victory.

heroes in all ages, and led them achieve the infinitum deeds of glory. It was love for their fatherland. What inflamed the heart of Napoleon the Great, pushing himself forward without resting and conquering countries of Europe? It was love of fame. What causes the niggard to suppress the strongest impulse of nature, the desire for good and drink, and literally to die of hunger besides his stock of gold? It is love of money. What usually compels lovers to commit suicide, conquering even the love of life? Again it is love which has been rejected. What is the motive which makes a mother overcome her desire for ease and comfort, sacrificing money, time, health and everything? It is the love for her child. What enables good christian married people to practice self-control, to overcome selfishness and to set aside their own wishes? It is love and conjugal affection for each other. Life will be twisting out of control but when there is love, there is victory. With this power --- the power of valor and love radiates our vitality, resulting to man’s victory from the death-defying chaos.
