Our Mission Dwight School London prepares young people to become leaders in the world through personalised learning, our global vision and commitment to the community. This mission is underpinned by three educational pillars.
Personalised Learning With a student body representing a range of individual academic abilities and talents, our aim is to provide personalised programmes that extend, challenge and support each student within the context of the International Baccalaureate Programmes. Dwight is committed to realising each student's potential based on international standards of excellence and each individual's Spark of Genius.
Community Dwight School London's commitment to the International Baccalaureate Programmes ensures academic excellence combined with leadership training and service learning. Through academic, civic, team and individual exploration students develop valuable leadership skills and engage in authentic local and global community service that will help them succeed in the next phase of their lives as students, community members and leaders.
Global Vision Dwight School London serves a diverse community of students from all over the world, and the International Baccalaureate Programmes have an emphasis on intercultural awareness, encouraging global thinkers and developing global citizens. Our school literally extends into other regions of the world through the range of cultures and experiences of our students, and our strong partnership with our sister schools.
The International Baccalaureate Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. www.ibo.org

Afterwards, we enjoyed a typical Mexican meal at the Mestizo restaurant where the BBC was actually recording a documentary about this particular festival.
This year M3 Spanish students learnt more about and celebrated the Day of the Dead at school. As a great culmination for this unit we attended two lectures at the British Museum where we saw happy Calacas (skeletons) and Cempasuchil flowers ( Mexican marigold).
Español es interesante y divertido. GOYA Exhibition.
Quijote and Cervantes.
Just before Christmas London surprised us with a wonderful exhibition about Francisco de Goya, an extremely talented painter who had a very turbulent life and portrayed Spain’s lights and shadows. We loved this artist so much that we wanted to share our passion with the M4 students by learning about his life and unique painting style. One day we attended the lecture “Introduction on Goya, The portraits” and visited the exhibition. We had the chance to talk about the use of colours, the choice of topics and some peculiarities or secret messages in those paintings. Some of the M4 students were very close to professional curators! It was a wonderful day, and we also had time to enjoy a nice hot chocolate wandering around Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and the Royal Opera House in our search for Christmas decorations.
As you already know this year we have celebrated the 400th Anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare’s deaths. The M3 students had an interdisciplinary unit based on these two writers’ lives and works. We found connections, differences and distinctive features that highlight their skills as authors. We visited two exhibitions on “El Quijote” by Cervantes at the British Museum and the Instituto Cervantes too. M1 and M2 students were introduced to Cervantes’ masterpiece, “El Quijote” and they joined the M3 students in a workshop about the most important scene from the book at school. I still wonder … are they “gigantes” or “molinos?
¡Buen
verano
a todos!
Have a great summer!
French Language Acquisition M1 and the RSPCA: M1 French students, as part of the IB curriculum, did some Action Service: they organised a bake sale, and a non-uniform day, to raise money for the RSPCA. In the bake sale, they had a variety of different cakes, some including animal cupcakes! They also had some watermelon slices! There are pictures below, of some of the cupcakes. On the non-uniform day, we had to pay £1 to wear animal related clothing, and £2 to wear anything. We were very successful, and raised a whopping £268.25. We appreciate the work done at the RSPCA, and we hope this money will help.
French Diploma: Diploma students must master many different types of texts. Their guides about the use of mobile phones showed good understanding and reflection on the technology they have to live with. Here is a picture of their guides.
!
Italian Ab-Initio Commedia de!'Arte, Carnival, masks and body language An interactive workshop in Italian, where students learnt about the most popular form of Italian theatrical art “La Commedia dell’Arteand understood what the famous masks from Venice and other Italian cities stand for. Students created and interpreted short dialogues in Italian, accompanied by gestures and body language like real Italians. This was a fantastic opportunity to use the language and deepen their knowledge of the customs, geography and history of Italy with games and fun glottodrama activities.
Italian through Pizza Making An interactive workshop in Italian, to consolidate and expand food vocabulary and understand the passion and culture behind making pizza. With our pizza chef, called pizzaiolo, students learnt how to make tender, flexible yeast dough, to launch it in the air and sauce it, and they took it home to bake it in the oven with family and friends. Of course they also ate some at the end of the session. Language games and activities complemented this very practical hands-on class.
!
English Language Acquistion
It has been proven that scrabble prompts the enhancement of adolescent’s language development, more specifically their vocabulary growth through the use of spelling, creative assessment, and schematic reasoning ( R.Hassan). At Dwight London, we incorporate this game into our English B lessons to help the students with their speaking skills and to increase their range of their English vocabulary.
Grand Finale-Language Day Assembly This school year our department decided to break the mould and, as a result, our assembly was superb! We got divided into groups and did various activities during that time. The students in my group were asked to write poems. Before the assembly, they had been asked to do a bit of research about poetry in their countries. The students did really well, expressing their thoughts and emotions using a foreign, to them, language. Here is an example of the poems written on that day. Enjoy!

Also, the starting point of the next season for them They are not only beautiful but also powerful I will remember their new lives the next spring as well.
!
Japanese Ab-Initio Diploma: Samar wrote newspaper articles and created the newspaper itself in Japanese about her adventure in Japan. Language Day: Sushi making, everyone enjoyed making and eating Sushi rolls.
!
Mandarin Language Acquisition During the winter term, we went to Soho and applied for free library cards at Westminster’s Charing Cross Chinese Library. At the beginning of the spring term, we went to Chinatown for Yum Cha and a Year of the Monkey’s show. M1 Chinese Mandarin class compiled a YouTube video when they were learning “When is your birthday?” The Year 6 students from Lower School visited us and we did some Calligraphy activities.

What have we thought of this year? M1 I liked memorising pi Arun I enjoy mathematics in general; there are so many different topics M1F boys I really enjoy making the various presentations for some of the units. They are really fun Haya
M2 I enjoyed answering the hard questions Ryuto What we were learning was really interesting and I enjoyed doing exercises Satine I enjoyed transformations because I like working with graphs and shapes Andrei
M3 I learnt a lot Victoria I don’t get why maths is so fun #JoinTheConfusion Tess I enjoy doing math questions Reika
M1 Throughout the year the M1 studentshave been introduced into the MYP world of mathematics, approaching various mathematical problems in an inquiry based way. The M1’s in particular enjoyed their first unit on number systems where they created PowerPoints to explained how the number system has changed throughout time. They also had fun investigating patterns in nature with a specific focus on the fibonacci numbers, for this unit some students even made videos describing the patterns they found in nature. The last unit the students in M1 particularly enjoyed was a project on linking mathematics to the real world. This can be seen from the pictures. The students choose a variety of different means to demonstrate what they learnt like for example posters, videos and presentations. M2 The M2 group this year all took mathematics activity during term two. In this activity they did various fun projects that involved the application of mathematics to the real world. In particular they made excellent presentations on people that are often overlooked in society, women mathematicians. This picture shows a group from mathematics activity. They made a short video explaining how change works by showing a thief (Theano) that was getting to much change in a store which then resulted in a bankrupt shopkeeper (Teo). Then a detective (Yael) explained how change works and they caught the thief.
M3 The M3 students also had mathematics activity in the first term. These students did many different activities and quizzes during this extra hour of mathematics in the week. Their biggest project was designing and displaying the solar system to scale. They had to use various household items as planets and toilet paper as the distance. This can be seen from the photos. At the end of the project most students were surprised at the amount of empty matter in space and how small our planet compares to the rest of our universe. M4 This year's M4 group are very talented and enthusiastic mathematicians. They enjoy most aspects of mathematics and especially enjoy project based activities. Their favorite project based activity was a statistical investigation looking at various relationships in the world. For example, one student completed a project on the correlation of crime rates and weather in London. Unfortunately the student found there was a very weak correlation. Another interesting one was profit from a movie versus the rating. M5 The M5 students this year were concentrating on their assessments. They did this through various problem solving activities. For example, they looked at the probability of a person being diagnosed with HIV without actually having it (it does happen). This they found very interesting. They all have worked very hard throughout the year in preparation for these e assessments and the mathematics department is very proud of them.
My favourite subject was learning about the different types of cells. I was really fascinated in all the the parts of animal and plant cells and what they do. I also enjoyed learning about specialised cells and their functions. I found it interesting what each type of cell does. E.g. (Ciliated epithelium cell carries the egg cell through the Fallopian tubes, in a woman, and that it brushes dirt, smoke and dust particles out of your respiratory system). I really hope to learn more about this next year and I hope other people enjoyed this subject as well. I also really enjoyed going on a field trip the the Center of the Cell. It was really fun playing games. - Lucas Centlivre
My favourite thing this year in science was going to the cells museum and learning about cells and playing games to help us learn cells in a fun way. - Drake O'Neill

LANGUAGE & LIT ERAT URE Communication
Communication is the exchange or transfer of signals, facts, ideas and symbols. It requires a sender, a message and an intended receiver, Communication involves the activity of conveying information or meaning.
Connections Connections
are links, bonds and relationships among people, objects, organisms or ideas. Linguistic and literary connections exist across time, texts and cultures. Due to the universal nature of language and literature, connections and transfer exist within and across narratives. This allows for the exploration of language and relationships between text, creator and audience.
Creativity
Creativity is the process of generating novel ideas and considering existing ideas from new perspectives. Creativity includes the ability to recognize the value of ideas when developing innovative responses to problems; it may be evident in process as well as outcomes, products or solutions. Synthesizing ideas with language that is a vehicle for creativity. It is
LANGUAGE & LIT ERAT URE the result of interaction and reflection, whether with the self or the wider community. This process rests on an appreciation of the process with which the individual engages, and the impact of the final product on the audience.
Perspective
Perspective is the position from which we observe situations, objects, facts, ideas and opinions. Perspective may be associated with individuals, groups, cultures or disciplines. Different perspectives often lead t o multiple representations and interpretations, thus the perspective influencing text, and text influencing perspective. Through language and literature studies, multiple perspectives and their effects are identified, analysed, deconstructed and reconstructed. An understanding of this concept is essential in order to develop in students the ability to recognize and respond to over-simplistic and biased interpretations. Seeking and considering diverse opinions and points of view is an important part of developing complex and defensible interpretations.

DIPLOMA In the diploma program, one of the mandatory core components is to complete a minimum of 150 hours of creativity, action, and service (CAS). Each student must accumulate a minimum of 50 hours per CAS area. CAS was created as a counterbalance to the rigors of the program. A creativity project should be one that is an imaginative, inspirational activity that may be followed through or carried out. The activity portion may be the creative activity that a student learns to participate, perform, or instruct with physical exertion. A seervice activity requires students to service others within or outside the local community. Diploma students, Hannah Strauss, Sashank Chandramouli, and Muna Hamedi carried out a project to fundraise money for Moses, a child in Uganda. Dwight Upper School sponsers Moses by fundraising money to pay for his school necessities. The group decided that due to the upcoming winter holidays, they could start a project in which the following years could continue. The three students chose to celebrate Christmas this past year through getting a tree, liights, and decorations to put up in the upper school cafe. To get the younger students involved in the celebrations, the group printed out ornaments for the students to write what they were thankful for during the holidays. To fundraise money for Moses, the group collaborated with another group of M5 students to put together an Ugly Christmas Jumper day on the last day of term.
Creativity, Action and Service
Diploma students, Martina Castelli, Jacob Done, and Luc Cronenberg completed a CAS project to teach the Year 6 students in the Lower School about the Upper School. The students learnt about the Dwight Upper School rules, faculty, and public speaking skills. The goal was to “create a sense of familiarity for the Year 6 students going into the Upper School, letting them know that the ‘big boys and girls’ school is not that scary and that they will integrate with no problem thanks to the school staff, teachers and peer students.” according to Martina. the three students carried out the activities for 4-5 weeks, acumulating over 7 hours for their preparations, creativity, and carrying out the service.
Diploma Theory of Knowledge Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a mandatory, core component for the IB Diploma. The corse “provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know, as told by the IBO.
